I think the only #Fediverse apps that could comply with age verification laws (as they have the tools available) are #Threads & #WordPress (I believe commercial plugins are available for the latter).
Age verification tech is best handled by experienced third-party apps (for security reasons), but #Mississippi does not understand the risk & cost factors for complying with their law.

Direct imaging of exoplanets is a challenging area tackled by ground based telescopes with systems like VLT-SPHERE.
Techniques used by SPHERE and its 3 instruments include -
1. Adaptive optics to correct for the turbulent effects of the Earth’s atmosphere
2. Coronagraph to block out light from the star
3. Polarization filters (light reflected off planets is polarized).
4. Use of IR bands such as H and Ks that are translucent to earth's atmosphere.

The discovery of exoplanet WISPIT 2b was followed by additional observations.
This study led by U of Arizona astronomer Laird Close used the MagAO-X system at the Magellan Telescope in Chile. It discovered a 2nd planet CC1 (mass = 9 Jupiters, distance = 15 au from the star). It also observed and measured accretion of Hydrogen by the planet from the dusty disk.

And this method also won't trigger Digital Privacy and Data Retention laws, and no PII leak issues later other than the usual (email, handle, and whatever the user [irresponsibly] shared)—if ever that happens.
It's better than having PII that many jurisdictions are strict about. For example, here in the Philippines, companies are not allowed to announce "Happy Birthdays" or post a list of monthly birthdays unless they acquired a written permission from their employees. Birthdays are one such PII that our Privacy law takes very seriously. We can even decline giving our birthdays in job application forms (which passes to many hands), and there's nothing they can do about it. An individual has an exclusive right to disclose their birth date.
So, yeah, a local instance is better because such scenarios like requiring age verification can be done without storing any data. In addition, only the local Privacy and Data Retention laws will apply (unless the individual is a foreign passport holder of course).

You can completely prohibit access to minors or simply control the exposure of such content. It doesn't matter how. For the UK, it is largely related to the number of users. Above a certain threshold, it is mandatory (see Wiki).
