I am an extrovert. If I weren't restricted by social norms, I would be like that dog on a walk that wants to greet everybody. As a human person, I do attempt restraint.
I do not engage with many people in Real Life because preparing to interact with people--making myself presentable in society--is work. I'd rather not make an effort I believe will not be appreciated.
Also, I'm a night-owl so places I want to go are usually closed when I'm awake.

Yeah, I do that as a basic acknowledgement (when I'm actually in public). But a dog that wants to greet everyone is a different thing. A dog wants to engage. I want to engage. I want a (non-hostile) conversation.
If, once the conversation starts, I find that I don't like the conversation, I will disengage, but I I generally want it. (Unless somebody smells unpleasant--I'm sensitive about odors--or looks hostile.)
