Fediverse groups are really useful accounts to follow. They are sort of "super hashtags" as their posts reach everyone who follows the group, no matter what server they are on. You can find out more at:

They aren't like groups on other platforms, it's better to think of them as hashtags that federate more effectively.

Follow a group to see its discussions in your timelines, mention a group to post to it. (It's like old-style email discussion lists.)

This is not the "group" type in ActivityPub, it's a different thing.

The groups I'm posting about are automated accounts that boost posts which mention them.

I am not a web dev so I am not sure what the technical relationship is between them, but for example PeerTube channels labelled "group" in Mastodon do not distribute the way Guppe etc groups do, so I'm assuming they are separate things.

There are indeed groups, just as there are groups on other platforms in other networks.
Only Mastodon cannot handle such groups, so if you need groups, you may need to switch software and not wait for Mastodon alone.
The #fediverse can do everything, but you have to be willing to use software other than Mastodon.

@Fedi.Tips I would like to add an important note for mastodon users: the Raccoon for Friendica app, which is fully usable also by mastodon accounts, is the only app available that allows a topic view of Activitypub groups: it does so on all existing groups, namely Friendica, Lemmy, Piefed, Mbin and NodeBB

Lots of people subscribe to tags, and there are lots of active groups listed at a.gup.pe for example.

If you want more people to subscribe to these, subscribe to them yourself. Be the change you want to see πŸ™‚

My personal account is on a small instance but my feed is full of cute dogs because I subscribe to popular dog-related tags such as #DogsOfMastodon etc.

They are not the same thing or the same purpose as Reddit-like groups. Their function and intention is very different.

That's why I think Guppe-style groups should be regarded as super-hashtags because that better describes their function.

if you see bad content on a hashtag you report it, and the same goes for bad content on Guppe-style groups.

This is discussed in the guide at fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on…

Their advantage over hashtags is they federate much more effectively. This is especially important if you're on a smaller server.

Guppe posts are delivered to every group follower's server, whereas hashtag posts are only delivered to servers that have already noticed the account posting.

Guppe groups actively push content in a way that hashtags don't.

@I Thought I Saw A 2 they're different services. Naturally, to those accustomed to Friendica groups, Lemmy communities, or NodeBB categories, gup.pe groups may seem very primitive. Yet the added value of gup.pe is that any Mastodon user can create a group to share their interests with other contacts.
Abusers can always be blocked by the individual user or reported to their instance administrator.
