Today we are calling on institutions around the world to take control of their #DigitalSovereignty, including their social accounts. Governments should communicate directly with their citizens on open platforms, not through the mouthpiece of a corporation.

If you care about digital sovereignty and want to see your government join the #fediverse, contact them to say that #ItsTimeToAbolishX.

Help us make a list of how to get in touch with a representative in your area under this post, and don’t forget to #hashtag so your neighbours can find it 👇🏽 we’ll start:

@fluffgar I've noticed the Greens have Mastodon accounts. Unlike many SNP MPs/MSPs who have decided the private enterprise Bluesky is the way to go... Duh!
in reply to James Tweedie

@MyricaGale
> I've noticed the Greens have Mastodon accounts

Do they host their own Mastodon service(s), or do they contract it out to the Mastodon company's hosting service?

> Unlike many SNP MPs/MSPs who have decided the private enterprise Bluesky is the way to go

Are you sure? In theory, they could be hosting their own PDS, and using the BlackSky relay (or another one independent of BlueSky), while allowing BS members to follow them.

Just curious.

@fluffgar @Mastodon

in reply to Strypey

@strypey @fluffgar The Green accounts I follow seem to be on Mastodon.scot

Most of the SNP ones are on Bluesky (one recent one had remarked about being worried about the step of leaving X).
I have seen a few relayed from Bluesky but not on Mastodon itself.

in reply to James Tweedie

@MyricaGale
> The Green accounts I follow seem to be on Mastodon.scot

That's a start. But I'll be more impressed when they're posting as @candidate.name@greenparty.org.uk

> Most of the SNP ones are on Bluesky

Even that's a step forward from Xitter. But again, I'll be more impressed when I see them posting on either network using snp.org. I mean, rather than being under someone else's domain ... ; )

great initiative, can we collaborate? This website xodus.online is aimed at bringing the various campaigns on this together Email contact info@xodus.online
in reply to Xodus.online

@xodus_online I don't really agree with the website on several issue's. You said Twitter promotes "Far right" whatever that means to you, but it's not only far right (which you dedicate a whole page to), but also far left who are promoted by Twitter. Let's not make it about politics. They promote whatever gets people fired up, which is both sides of the isle.

You also said on the website that Bluesky is a good alternative, which I don't agree with. Bluesky has a prominent bias for "left wingers". I think both sides of the extremes are not good.
Over 60% of shared links on Bluesky lead to left-wing sites, 20% centrist, and only 8% right-leaning, per a University of Zurich study.

I don't agree with the new policies of Twitter (is why I'm here) but let's take back social media from politics and let social media be what it always was, a media to be social with people, not a politics forum 😁

I just know about fediverse, it's the best social media that i ever used. I can choose what my home looks like, and i can do self host :blobaww:

in France there was the #HelloQuitX initiative earlier this year, morphed into #EscapeX ( @fr.escape-x.org / @HelloQuitteX ) that was pushing in this direction – but was blocked/ignored by most gov and politicians in France.

@leavex somehow took over and might have more to say and offer.

in reply to Mastodon

While it would be nice to have a way to avoid X, the crux is that lots of people are just migrating from one silo to another instead of adopting the Fediverse. And the officials are the regular people too.

tbh I'd much rather have people up in arms about the EUs decimation of privacy via Chat control.

in reply to Mastodon

While I support this initiative I do believe it is up to Mastodon to proof itself. People I talk to think Bluesky is the easier alternative. That said the federated structure should appeal to government agencies and somebody should say they are at least obliged to provide coverage
in reply to BaseFortify

@BaseFortify
Going for the easier alternative ended with all of them feeling they're stuck on twitter, so maybe a little bit of effort would be advisable 😁
@Mastodon
in reply to Landa

@Landa Absolutely but we live in a world in which extra effort is rarely afforded. For now the best we can hope for is more agencies using #mastodon
in reply to BaseFortify

@BaseFortify They *are* already on Mastodon! Look at @EUCommission or @Bundesregierung - only 2 examples, even with own instances (other government have them also). It's not too difficult for them to be here. It's apparently too difficult for them to leave Twitter.

@Landa @Mastodon

in reply to el Celio 🇪🇺 🇺🇦

@elCelio
There are/were accounts for smaller-scale institutions that people seem to like to follow.
Local police or firefighters, city councils, public transit authorities.

For better or worse, a lot of people use social media to get information and notifications from these.

Providing that same service (or a better one of course ;)) through the Fediverse might help a lot in getting some to switch.
@NatureMC @BaseFortify
@Mastodon

in reply to BaseFortify

Bluesky is not even in the running if the goal is European social (digital) sovereignty... It's made and controlled by an American company.
in reply to Vesipeto Vetehinen

@vetehinen Agreed, but Mastodon is harder to use compared to Bluesky, that must be taken into account.
in reply to Mastodon

Ya he enviado un correo a la comisión de España! Esperemos que se animen y empiecen a abrir sus cuentas en el Fediverse 🤩🇪🇺
in reply to Mastodon

yup. All EU institutions, politicians, celebrities etc should be on Mastodon and not twitter etc as we cannot allow foreign entities to interefere with European communications. Ideally others should be there too but that is their decision.
in reply to Mastodon

It's more like I want my government to stay away from the fediverse. They will ruin it.

@EUCommission The real outrage here is learning that the EU is spending money on twitter ads.

And they are those who lecture the EU on free speech. The EU should withdraw completely from X and other such platforms e make a turn toward Open Source software only (which by the way would help foster innovation and create jobs).

There is a problem with verification.

The current system is suitable for those who have a recognizable website and that's it.

Fraudsters can verify the eloonmuskcom website for themselves, while people without a website (or whose website is not recognizable) cannot verify anything.

Mastodon should copy the system from Discord. I think there should be a way to verify accounts from other services (Spotify, YT, Steam/GOG, Instagram)

Why is the European Commission even using X in the first place? Anyone with any sense has long since abandoned that platform.

Elon Musk and X are once again proving why institutions should never rely on corporate-owned, centrally-controlled social media platforms to reach their people.

in reply to Mastodon

White Mastodon's play for institutions is understandable in the context of its "good-growth" ideology, it's also indicative of a certain euro-naivete about the true nature of government. Trying to catalyze more institutional involvement in the fediverse will also inevitably invite unwanted scrutiny and interest by politicians to control, censor, surveil and age-gate the platform(s).

It's unfortunate that these pipe dreams about "a billion users" continue to obscure to some the dangers faced by the fedi in an authoritarian age. Others of us will continue with a call to #EmbraceTheNiche and to recognize the true value the fediverse experiment can bring to an increasingly fascist reality as a dissident network beyond state control

As a refugee, I've seen how easily our voices are silenced. We need platforms that amplify, not censor.

the EC shouldn't advertise and help fund that despicable Nazi website anyways.
in reply to Mastodon

remember when responsible companies and government entities that needed communications have their own websites with links to a web interface on a bulletin board system, which could also be reached by modem, and their own forums for feedback and email response forums? That was cheap, that was easy, and it was almost universal. Why the heck did that go away?

THE USA IS A FACIAST STATE.

"The European Commission's fine isn't just an attack on X, it's an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments," Rubio wrote in a post on X.

"The days of censoring Americans online are over."

His remarks were reposted by Musk, who added "absolutely".
