It started in industrialized countries in the 70s with deregulation and 'free markets'. This was supposed to lead to an explosion of "knowledge workers" but it didn't. Instead factory jobs became service jobs. Theht people in the service jobs got mad at the knowleldge workers thinking they were the elites but really they were just slightly better paid workers.
