Palestinian residents of the occupied West Bank city of Hebron have disavowed a proposal by five purported local "sheikhs" to sever ties with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and establish an "emirate of Hebron" which would recognise the state of Israel.
Hebron-based activist and journalist Issa Amro said that the proposal and its authors are "complete fabrications". "The so-called 'Hebron sheikhs' in this WSJ piece are complete fabrications - anonymous figures with zero political presence, social standing, family ties and community recognition," he told Middle East Eye.
"No media, no clans, no Palestinian factions acknowledge them because they simply don't exist as consequential actors. This isn't journalism - it's inventing Palestinian 'leaders' to fit an artificial narrative while real Hebronites endure occupation," he added.

Aside from the Ars Technica article in the xpost, there's a lot of "it depends."
It depends on not just the OS, but if it's a custom image built for Dell or HP or Asus etc. computers, what settings are on, what settings were on by default, what bloatware is pre-installed, etc.
Typically, all MS or Apple really want are to know what apps you have installed, zip code, email address, IP address, crash reports, and possibly keywords they can associate with advertising. That's their baseline wish list, which is all advertising fodder, and depending on your settings, that can quickly expand to "anonymized" (it's not) cookie use, tracking of websites visited, etc.
If you have a custom image (i.e. a Dell specific version of Windows) the laptop manufacturer will look for access to roughly the same data.
With the whole Copilot fiasco, recording things like keystrokes and screenshots really are potentially in play now. But, again, only if you have foolishly installed Copilot and turned that stuff on. And that only after huge public outcry. So there's always a non-zero risk of that, but do your due diligence to know you settings.
Can you strip out bloatware and tighten down Windows to a reasonable degree? Sure. But because MS can and does change system settings without your consent, you might find in 6 months an article about a setting you turned off, that they turned back on and you had no idea.
Even if you turn off the setting and it stays off in subsequent updates, how can you know that the setting actually does anything at all? That is to say how can you trust Microsoft does not ignore the setting and just gathers the data always.
It might be not sending any extra data - which can be verified via packet sniffing like Wireshark - but how do you confirm they are not saving the legit requests you do and collect it silently at the backend? It cannot be proven (beyond reasonable doubt).
Since they are closed source, we can't know. We can find out that messages are being sent at certain moments, but not what data is being contained in the messages, communications carrying this sort of data are always encrypted (for obvious reasons).
For legal reasons they often include some vague allusion in the terms of service about collecting information.. but they are never very clear on what data exactly they take when and how, so it's left up to interpretation.
There is so so so much, and they do get caught, and when they do we keep a peek into how invasive they are. As someone who has had to worry about being targeted by intelligence agencies and nation-states, I was completely blindsided by corporate/capitalist surveillance.
for example, look at this action by Meta, where they broke out of security sandboxes and exploited protocols in order to tie your browsing history (even private browsing) back to your identify saved in their databases back in meta land
the amount of data that is being harvested and sold, and resold, is absurd, and the greater threat is not just that they are exploiting you, its that they dont care who the data gets sold to. Bad actors (criminals, etc) can and will purchase information they can use against you.
So, consider the unintentional ramifications of all that info being harvested and available in addition to the intentional ramifications of hyper greed, and couple that with the amount of available compute and you will see that you do not need to be a person of interest, everyone is a data point that can be and will be exploited.
I would encourage everyone to take their privacy seriously.
I swear meta is just built different in terms on spying on people compared to everyone else. It's like they have a team of ex non ethical elite hackers to find security vulnerabilities in everything and exploit everything as much as possible.
This is the real issue. It's not so much the intentional sale of your info for profit, or, for the majority of people, the threat of surveillance states finding out you're one of their enemies of the month. Most people are hit by criminals using the info to target them. For example, if they know your adult child's information and have samples of their voice data from social media, they can make an AI bot to impersonate them and ask for money. Or, if robbers happen to be targeting a neighborhood, they can use your location information to determine when you aren't home. These are much more complex than most of these scams, though. Most are much simpler, but using some combination of info from social media, security breach data, location data, etc. All of that data is being bought and sold now. Mostly by "legitimate" companies. Things like that are the major consequences for the majority of people.
not sure about win/mac, but for android yes they do keep record of stuff like what apps are being launched and upload/sync to google account. it's not hidden though.. it is(was) literally available on google account history or something (was about 7 years ago)

The issue with using fake details is that you risk getting your account suspended. Also, if your domain gets stolen you've made it impossible to retrieve because you will have to verify your information.
"Just" as in nothing that demands a phone number to validate. Meaning that OP will be asked to enter a phone number when signing up and may not have to worry about it being the same one as their email account.
I am a EU citizen with a .eu domain which required real data, I have never given my phone number to validate and the email I gave is the one registered under that eu domain.
I originally registered the domain I'm now using for Lemmy for the company "The Empire". I was a kid and did it just for the lulz. Also I additionally used my real name.
It's not a problem while the domain isn't for an commercial use. An online shop with fake credencials = big problems, but for all other, while they receive their money for the domain, they give a fuck who you are.
They definitely do check. I don't know how detailed the checks are or how major a crime it is to use someone else's info, but there are enough checks in place, you can't just type in Porky Pig or made-up nonsense or anything.
Usually, the company you bought the domain from sends a e-mail once a year to ask you to verify the WHOIS information is correct.
It doesn't go any further than that if your just hosting nextcloud, a DNS, a blog.
If the website is used to break the law, then that email is contacted, if the email is non respondant, the email provider is asked for IP adress at the time of the last connection, if ISP: you get contacted, if VPN provider: IP at plan subscription or last connection etc. until they can reach an ISP. Then you get contacted.

I haven't watched every game but I have some thoughts myself. I thought Tim Connelly was crazy for drafting another French center but I understand it now, Joan getting 7 blocks in his first game has convinced me that he can replace (and possibly exceed) Gobert in the future. Dilly, TSJ, and Clark were exciting too, the wolves' young core is looking nice especially on defense.
I had higher hopes for pistons' 2nd round pic Chaz Lanier, I'm hoping he gets some better catch-and-shoot looks going forward but those aren't as common in summer league. Ron Holland on the other hand might as well have been LebRon Holland. 28pts 11reb 3stl 4/5 3pt is impressive, especially the improved shooting, I hope it's not a fluke.
Speaking of fluke, all eyes have been on Cooper Flagg and Bronny James. We'll see in a couple hours if Coop can have a better game today, 5/21 from the field is rough though. Bronny was playing lockdown defense too which seems to be his new identity, we'll see if he can keep this up, he could be a rotational player going forward.

I bought a Lenovo laptop, one from the the bargain bin, 11th gen Intel and 8gb soldered RAM
Even if I reinstalled Windows to make sure all the bloatware was removed, it was almost unusable. At boot I was left with only 800mb free memory, and "Lenovo vantage" kept reappearing automatically like malware. (It's a useless electron app that wastes half a gig of ram to show you on screen when you press caps lock, check driver updates and try to upsell you on extended warranty)
At idle the machine was as loud as a jet, with crystal disk mark always complaining "the nvme drive is over 65°C!!" (I'm guessing from the constant swapping)
Battery life was a disaster, 2 hours at idle with no foreground apps open
I thought that it was the CPU too slow for my use and the RAM not enough, so I was planning to spend some hundreds of euro to buy a new laptop with at least 16gb of RAM.
Then I installed cachyos and because I'm masochist I chose hyprland at the "easy" install screen that asks you which of the 19 available DE you prefer.
After a week of suffering trying to understand all the text configuration files for everything (it was a shock, everything needs the terminal) I'm now getting used to it and... It's like I got a brand new laptop??!?
Memory: clean boot now obviously is reversed situation. I don't have only 800mb of free RAM, the whole system uses only 800mb
Temperatures: by default cachyos is set to show the CPU temperature on waybar, and it's always around 40-45° C. The fan is way quieter. At idle they can even stop, before they were like a hair dryer even after a clean boot
Battery life: astounding. I can't believe that I can use it for a whole afternoon. Accidentally fell asleep and when I came back after two hours it lost only 10% (on idle, screen turn off automatically)
Gaming performance: tried only with casual games but with something like tinytopia I get 60fps on ultra when on windows it was choppy on high
I have the L 14 GEN two so it’s probably the same processor and I don’t know if my eight GB is salted or not but I was able to upgrade to 16 GB anyway I noticed that in Lennox I get significantly better battery life. It probably goes from 2 to 3 hours to 4 to 5 maybe.
Im not sure about the amd thinkpads as there are some models where the intel version has socketed ram whereas the amd version of the same laptop has fully soldered ram. The s versions are slightly smaller and lighter
Almost every laptop I've owned in the past 15 years has been this way. Just an old machine people wanted to discard because of viruses or crap performance. They'd give their "junk" to me and go buy a new laptop. After swapping it to linux with a few tweaks here and there, I swear that "junk" would outperform the new one they dropped all the money on.
Had the same experience at work. Brand new work laptop with Windows and a bunch of mandatory spyware. Personal laptop running Linux on 10 year old hardware. Linux machine is more responsive and pleasant to use.
I've used Linux as my primary OS for many years, but I keep a copy of Windows on my current laptop for gaming. I know the gaming story on Linux is pretty good now, but having to hibernate and reboot is enough of a barrier to launching a game that it helps me stay more productive.
At home, my laptop sits on a stand with great airflow, but when trying to play The Witcher 3 on a desk while traveling, it overheated and throttled to the point it wasn't playable. On Linux, the thinkpad_acpi driver allows setting the fan level to "disengaged", which sounds like "off" but actually means unregulated and results in a considerably higher speed and cooling performance than the usual maximum. Some research led to the conclusion that while manual fan control is possible with certain apps on Windows, there is no way to exceed the maximum automatic speed.
It only took a couple minutes to set up Lutris and Proton to run the game, and as expected the mild abuse of my laptop's fan does make it playable. What I didn't expect is considerably faster load times, but I got those too.
Linux on old laptops is a joy. I spent my morning on an old MacBook Pro that I found on the recycled electronics bench when I dropped off some bottles. Runs great (Niri instead of Hyprland but similar).
CachyOS provides optimised Linux kernels out of the box, leading to significant performance gains. I got a friend to install Cachy on his old computer, and his experience is similar too.
You might also consider enable zram (aka download more ram that actually work) if you do a lot of compiling from the aur, my 16gb laptop crash when trying to compile Cosmic DE.
Just a handy tip if you haven't already your laptop might sound like it's about to take off because it hasn't been cleaned in a while. Just search up a tutorial on YouTube for your laptop and be amazed at how much dust you will find clogging up your fan.
Also yeah that terminal thing is just arch and hyprland you really through yourself in the deep end there (I personally havnt used arch before). Linux mint on the other hand is super easy to use and the terminal is only there if you chose to use it.
In the end I'm learning how everything works "behind the scenes" with a shock therapy (disclaimer: while I didn't use Linux as my personal desktop, I have a decade of experience with Linux servers, otherwise this migration would have been impossible to understand for me)

We don't know if you're high, sleeping, on your phone, or just watching SpongeBob on your infotainment panel. All we know is that you're failing of the one expectation of you. Honking at you gets your attention back where it needs to be. Don't take it personal. People have places to be.
Theoretically, if they just have a slower reaction time than you, you are actually slowing them down as they now have to look around to make sure you aren't honking because of potential danger, which is the actual usage purpose of a car horn.
Edit: Additionally, this creates a broader societal danger as the "go when honked at!" mentality is entirely opposite of the true purpose of a horn.
Example: Person in front is about to go, you notice that someone is running the red light perpendicular, you honk to signal the danger, now instead of recognizing the danger, they go anyway, thinking you were impatiently honking, leading directly to an accident.
Honk means "pay attention". If the light has been green long enough for me to honk at you you're not paying attention to anything on the road, danger or otherwise.

(Che per poco non rischiava di chiamarsi Octterest…) 💣💫💥 Questo coso spunta fuori dal fatto che, negli ultimi tempi, stava uscendo sempre più la necessità per me di avere un merdino per salvare ed organizzare elementi come link singoli o file multimediali, anche e soprattutto al volo, e potenzialmente renderli accessibili al pubblico… non so: memini, reference, cose da stampare, forse roba PDF file, tutto sotto il mio controllo a prova di sparizione. Ovviamente, una cartella con varie sottocartelle (magari sincronizzata su una repo Git pubblica), che in altri casi sarebbe l’opzione più ovvia, nel complesso qui non va bene, perché l’agilità va a farsi benedire… ma, io sono pur sempre una ragazza magica, dunque non devo accontentarmi delle soluzioni esistenti!!! 😍
In effetti, di software specializzati per salvare cose ce ne sono a bizzeffe… ne hosto io stessa da anni uno per link e articoli dal web, Shiori… però, non so, manca in tutti quella cosa in più per questo caso d’uso… Tra cui, il fatto che è bello facile a salvare elementi singoli dentro tutti quei robi, ma se io ipoteticamente (…e praticamente) avessi cartelle già piene di roba sul PC, che stracavolo dovrei fare? Quindi, beh, semplicemente ho progettato Pignio per operare direttamente sul file system, pescando e salvando sia file che metadati da e su file nella cartella del server, e ho fuso insieme quei due universi che mai devono toccarsi, rispettivamente della banalità informatica e dell’alta informatica… in altre parole, è flat-file, e sono negativamente stupita del fatto che non esista alcun altro software lato server per questo scopo qui ma con questa caratteristica. 🤥
Ora è davvero nelle fasi iniziali, e funziona bene… bisognerà vedere poi quanto regge, soprattutto con decine o centinaia di migliaia di file multimediali da trovare sul disco, con altrettanti file INI messi affianco da cui vengono letti i metadati (e quanto sarà l’overhead sul disco avendo tutti questi file da poche centinaia di byte ciascuno), ma la struttura del file system (per gli elementi creati dalla app stessa, identificati da un ID Snowflake, non i file tirati da fuori) penso di averla architettata bene. Sarà davvero la prova definitiva per l’architettura flat-file, se davvero finisco per riempire il sistema con questo passo… ma, in compenso, una repo Git sarà perfetta per fare il backup di tali questi miei preziosi dati (cosiddetto “mio tessoro“), non avendo blob di database. 🤤
Lo stile dell’interfaccia, e a breve anche il sistema di raggruppamento di elementi in collezioni, vabbé, l’ho copiato spudoratamente da Pinterest, e mi sembra ben ovvio… ma, differenza di Pinterest, Pignio ha vantaggi molto tosti… in primis è mio, quindi posso sistemarlo per non avere tutti i bug di merda (Pinterest ne ha infiniti!), poi è self-hostabile, quindi i dati sono già sempre fisicamente in mano a me; e, in più, funziona senza JavaScript, e quindi anche su browser vecchi (pur se con un layout mezzo rotto su quelli, per via del framework che ho usato, UIKit)… figurarsi se io trascuravo proprio una cosa del genere. 😤
Il lavoro da fare è ancora tantino però (e te pareva), perché, a parte le collezioni, ci sono cose solo da sistemare. Cose piccole, come l’importazione automatica di elementi da feed RSS esterni (…ed implementare i feed della roba dalla app stessa)… ma poi anche cose grosse ma assolutamente necessarie, come avere un OCR automatico sulle immagini, o più in generale il riconoscimento dei contenuti per fare tagging automatico, così da ottimizzare la ricerca e potenzialmente avere un algoritmo di suggerimento utile in un’istanza con più utenti. A proposito… ancora non ho nemmeno finito di implementare i permessi per gli utenti, quindi non posso invitare ancora nessuno a provare la mia istanza… però, ho reso pubblico il codice già da ieri (nonostante inizialmente pensavo di aspettare un po’, perché potrei cambiare alcune cose della struttura dati… ma francamente non freca): gitlab.com/octospacc/Pignio. Hab vor 'ner Weile im Laden "Ameisen-Buffet" gesehen und dachte, krass, hätte nicht gedacht, dass das schon im Mainstream angekommen ist, dass die Ameisen in Deutschland aktuell hart am Aussterben sind, so dass es genug Interesse an einem Produkt wie dem Bienenhotel nur eben für Ameisen gibt.
Ja, die meisten Ameisen verschwinden, weil ihr Lebensraum zerstört wird, unter anderem durch Pestizide oder weil z.B. weniger totes Holz in den Wäldern gelassen wird. Wenn man als Ameise nur 'ne bewässerte Wiese braucht, dann kann ich mir schon vorstellen, dass dein Garten Freude bereitet.

Das paßt einfach nur ins Bild eines ganz allgemeinen Kollaps der Biodiversität. Wir stecken im von den unschönen Nebenwirkungen des Industriezeitalters ausgelösten 6. Massenaussterben der Erdgeschichte, da geht die Biomasse von allen möglichen Spezies zurück, während die einiger weniger Arten rapide ansteigt -- nicht nur Menschen, ihre domestizierten Pflanzen- und Tierspezies und die davon abhängigen Spezies wie Parasiten und Schädlinge, sondern auch verschleppte invasive Spezies sowie solche Generalisten, für die der Niedergang komplexer Ökosysteme riesige ungenutzte Nischen eröffnet. Na ja, vermutlich ist das Industriezeitalter in 200-300 Jahren komplett vorbei, und der Kaputtalismus mit seinem bösartigen tumorhaften Wirtschaftswachstum kollabiert spätestens um 2050, wenn er überhaupt noch so lange durchhält. Interessant ist, wie schlimm die kumulativen Schäden an allen möglichen ökologischen Systemen dieses Planeten bis dahin noch werden. Wenn nur so 50-60% aller Spezies aussterben, stehen die Chancen sehr gut, daß hinreichend viele Menschen den Kollaps überleben, daß die Hominiden nicht aussterben. Wenn wir es so weit eskalieren lassen, daß 90% aller Spezies aussterben, dann verschwinden mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit alle ökologischen Nischen für große Landwirbeltiere, und das sind wir dummerweise halt auch. Egal wie es läuft, in 5-10 Millionen Jahren ist die Biosphäre wieder völlig normal, nur halt mit anderen Spezies, die aus den Überlebenden evolvieren. Um Ameisen würde ich mir keine Sorgen machen, die haben diverse ganz gewaltige Massensterben überlebt. Selbst wenn die meisten Spezies von denen verschwinden, ist das nicht allzu schlimm für die Ameisen insgesamt. Problematisch ist eher, daß die verschwindenden Ameisenspezies alle möglichen Tiere und Pflanzen beeinflussen, und daß sich dort, wo sie verschwinden, andere Spezies breitmachen, die andere Einflüsse auf das lokale Ökosystem haben.

Admittedly this is meant to apply to refunds and things like refusing the privacy agreement, but that's the point, it's fairly standard boilerplate for that reason.
Just because people don't read the agreements and didn't know about it doesn't mean they should have put it. Destroy physical copies is a dump clause and isn't enforcible.
For sure. There's plenty of unenforceable stuff in EULAs. For one thing a bunch of these are trying to apply globally across places with way different laws managing customer protections.
But if you don't mind that logic getting turned both ways, just because a EULA clause isn't enforceable doesn't mean you shouldn't add it.
If the idea is your lawyers think there's a risk of people buying a copy, refunding it and keeping it and you want to make sure that doesn't happen it makes some sense to add the clause. If a judge ever says that clause doesn't apply to a given situation you still mitigated the risk from the intended applicable situation.
That's why these license deals also tend to have boilerplate about how a clause being unenforceable or made illegal should not impact the rest of the clauses. It's a maximalist text, by design. It mostly exists like a big wet umbrella to keep companies out of the splash zone. Whatever ends up being used in practice is anybody's guess. The world of civil law and private deals is way less of a black and white exact science than most people getting their legal intuition from crime dramas tend to think.
In the case they should have made it clearer in the terms, there are many companies that try to enforce them even if they seem unenforceable like Disney in the death case.
There is no excuse to put terms like this, Disney proved that even if they look unenforceable they might try to enforce them.
Yes, that's the point. You put them in there, try to enforce them, see if that plays out or not. Ultimately you're punting the determination of how far they can apply to the courts.
Which ends up being why a lot of these never get enforced. In some cases the companies would rather let you quietly break their terms than roll the dice and find out that they don't have the protections they tried to give themselves.
Ultimately the limits of EULAs are set in legislation. What really matters is consumer protections. And in issues like these and copyright more generally we are in a bit of a no man's land where the regulations are woefully out of date, not keeping pace with the new online-driven economy of digital goods and companies are mostly not trying to enforce a bunch of their EULAs anyway.
We end up in a system where a significant chunk of our online economy is decided by Google and social media companies by default.
Corporations want people to act like their EULAs are written in blood when they're just ramblings of an entitled child on the playground. What are you going to do? Ban them again?

This all made me wonder, is it possible that over-reliance on cloud services for everything has massively deskilled the engineering workforce? And if it is so, who is going to be the European clouds, so necessary for EU's digital sovereignty?
