Pignio pignatico si rende superpignastico per pignare cose e cosine
L’altro giorno mi è venuta l’idea pazza che più pazza non si può etc etc… solito andazzo. Ma, per quanto l’andazzo sia sempre lo stesso del cazzo, il risultato delle mie macchinazioni è anche stavolta originale, e la primissima versione utilizzabile di esso è già in produzione da ieri sera. Occhi aperti sul nuovissimo gnammifico pezzo di software che è Pignio.octt.eu.org!!! (Che per poco non rischiava di chiamarsi Octterest…) 💣💫💥 Questo coso spunta fuori dal fatto che, negli ultimi tempi, stava uscendo sempre più la necessità per me di avere un merdino per salvare ed organizzare elementi come link singoli o file multimediali, anche e soprattutto al volo, e potenzialmente renderli accessibili al pubblico… non so: memini, reference, cose da stampare, forse roba PDF file, tutto sotto il mio controllo a prova di sparizione. Ovviamente, una cartella con varie sottocartelle (magari sincronizzata su una repo Git pubblica), che in altri casi sarebbe l’opzione più ovvia, nel complesso qui non va bene, perché l’agilità va a farsi benedire… ma, io sono pur sempre una ragazza magica, dunque non devo accontentarmi delle soluzioni esistenti!!! 😍
In effetti, di software specializzati per salvare cose ce ne sono a bizzeffe… ne hosto io stessa da anni uno per link e articoli dal web, Shiori… però, non so, manca in tutti quella cosa in più per questo caso d’uso… Tra cui, il fatto che è bello facile a salvare elementi singoli dentro tutti quei robi, ma se io ipoteticamente (…e praticamente) avessi cartelle già piene di roba sul PC, che stracavolo dovrei fare? Quindi, beh, semplicemente ho progettato Pignio per operare direttamente sul file system, pescando e salvando sia file che metadati da e su file nella cartella del server, e ho fuso insieme quei due universi che mai devono toccarsi, rispettivamente della banalità informatica e dell’alta informatica… in altre parole, è flat-file, e sono negativamente stupita del fatto che non esista alcun altro software lato server per questo scopo qui ma con questa caratteristica. 🤥
Ora è davvero nelle fasi iniziali, e funziona bene… bisognerà vedere poi quanto regge, soprattutto con decine o centinaia di migliaia di file multimediali da trovare sul disco, con altrettanti file INI messi affianco da cui vengono letti i metadati (e quanto sarà l’overhead sul disco avendo tutti questi file da poche centinaia di byte ciascuno), ma la struttura del file system (per gli elementi creati dalla app stessa, identificati da un ID Snowflake, non i file tirati da fuori) penso di averla architettata bene. Sarà davvero la prova definitiva per l’architettura flat-file, se davvero finisco per riempire il sistema con questo passo… ma, in compenso, una repo Git sarà perfetta per fare il backup di tali questi miei preziosi dati (cosiddetto “mio tessoro“), non avendo blob di database. 🤤
Lo stile dell’interfaccia, e a breve anche il sistema di raggruppamento di elementi in collezioni, vabbé, l’ho copiato spudoratamente da Pinterest, e mi sembra ben ovvio… ma, differenza di Pinterest, Pignio ha vantaggi molto tosti… in primis è mio, quindi posso sistemarlo per non avere tutti i bug di merda (Pinterest ne ha infiniti!), poi è self-hostabile, quindi i dati sono già sempre fisicamente in mano a me; e, in più, funziona senza JavaScript, e quindi anche su browser vecchi (pur se con un layout mezzo rotto su quelli, per via del framework che ho usato, UIKit)… figurarsi se io trascuravo proprio una cosa del genere. 😤
Il lavoro da fare è ancora tantino però (e te pareva), perché, a parte le collezioni, ci sono cose solo da sistemare. Cose piccole, come l’importazione automatica di elementi da feed RSS esterni (…ed implementare i feed della roba dalla app stessa)… ma poi anche cose grosse ma assolutamente necessarie, come avere un OCR automatico sulle immagini, o più in generale il riconoscimento dei contenuti per fare tagging automatico, così da ottimizzare la ricerca e potenzialmente avere un algoritmo di suggerimento utile in un’istanza con più utenti. A proposito… ancora non ho nemmeno finito di implementare i permessi per gli utenti, quindi non posso invitare ancora nessuno a provare la mia istanza… però, ho reso pubblico il codice già da ieri (nonostante inizialmente pensavo di aspettare un po’, perché potrei cambiare alcune cose della struttura dati… ma francamente non freca): gitlab.com/octospacc/Pignio. Hab vor 'ner Weile im Laden "Ameisen-Buffet" gesehen und dachte, krass, hätte nicht gedacht, dass das schon im Mainstream angekommen ist, dass die Ameisen in Deutschland aktuell hart am Aussterben sind, so dass es genug Interesse an einem Produkt wie dem Bienenhotel nur eben für Ameisen gibt.
Ja, die meisten Ameisen verschwinden, weil ihr Lebensraum zerstört wird, unter anderem durch Pestizide oder weil z.B. weniger totes Holz in den Wäldern gelassen wird. Wenn man als Ameise nur 'ne bewässerte Wiese braucht, dann kann ich mir schon vorstellen, dass dein Garten Freude bereitet.

Das paßt einfach nur ins Bild eines ganz allgemeinen Kollaps der Biodiversität. Wir stecken im von den unschönen Nebenwirkungen des Industriezeitalters ausgelösten 6. Massenaussterben der Erdgeschichte, da geht die Biomasse von allen möglichen Spezies zurück, während die einiger weniger Arten rapide ansteigt -- nicht nur Menschen, ihre domestizierten Pflanzen- und Tierspezies und die davon abhängigen Spezies wie Parasiten und Schädlinge, sondern auch verschleppte invasive Spezies sowie solche Generalisten, für die der Niedergang komplexer Ökosysteme riesige ungenutzte Nischen eröffnet. Na ja, vermutlich ist das Industriezeitalter in 200-300 Jahren komplett vorbei, und der Kaputtalismus mit seinem bösartigen tumorhaften Wirtschaftswachstum kollabiert spätestens um 2050, wenn er überhaupt noch so lange durchhält. Interessant ist, wie schlimm die kumulativen Schäden an allen möglichen ökologischen Systemen dieses Planeten bis dahin noch werden. Wenn nur so 50-60% aller Spezies aussterben, stehen die Chancen sehr gut, daß hinreichend viele Menschen den Kollaps überleben, daß die Hominiden nicht aussterben. Wenn wir es so weit eskalieren lassen, daß 90% aller Spezies aussterben, dann verschwinden mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit alle ökologischen Nischen für große Landwirbeltiere, und das sind wir dummerweise halt auch. Egal wie es läuft, in 5-10 Millionen Jahren ist die Biosphäre wieder völlig normal, nur halt mit anderen Spezies, die aus den Überlebenden evolvieren. Um Ameisen würde ich mir keine Sorgen machen, die haben diverse ganz gewaltige Massensterben überlebt. Selbst wenn die meisten Spezies von denen verschwinden, ist das nicht allzu schlimm für die Ameisen insgesamt. Problematisch ist eher, daß die verschwindenden Ameisenspezies alle möglichen Tiere und Pflanzen beeinflussen, und daß sich dort, wo sie verschwinden, andere Spezies breitmachen, die andere Einflüsse auf das lokale Ökosystem haben.

I run Firefox with uBlock Origin in my work as well as private device for > 2 years without any issues including tricky applications like Citrix, Virtual Desktops etc.
On my mobile, I use Fennec with uBlock Origin, Decentraleyes and PrivacyBadger and sometimes have some small issues, so I have to view the page in Desktop mode instead.
But compared to a web full of ads, it's a difference like day and night. Definitely won't go back any time soon!

Just because people don't read the agreements and didn't know about it doesn't mean they should have put it. Destroy physical copies is a dump clause and isn't enforcible.
For sure. There's plenty of unenforceable stuff in EULAs. For one thing a bunch of these are trying to apply globally across places with way different laws managing customer protections.
But if you don't mind that logic getting turned both ways, just because a EULA clause isn't enforceable doesn't mean you shouldn't add it.
If the idea is your lawyers think there's a risk of people buying a copy, refunding it and keeping it and you want to make sure that doesn't happen it makes some sense to add the clause. If a judge ever says that clause doesn't apply to a given situation you still mitigated the risk from the intended applicable situation.
That's why these license deals also tend to have boilerplate about how a clause being unenforceable or made illegal should not impact the rest of the clauses. It's a maximalist text, by design. It mostly exists like a big wet umbrella to keep companies out of the splash zone. Whatever ends up being used in practice is anybody's guess. The world of civil law and private deals is way less of a black and white exact science than most people getting their legal intuition from crime dramas tend to think.
In the case they should have made it clearer in the terms, there are many companies that try to enforce them even if they seem unenforceable like Disney in the death case.
There is no excuse to put terms like this, Disney proved that even if they look unenforceable they might try to enforce them.
Yes, that's the point. You put them in there, try to enforce them, see if that plays out or not. Ultimately you're punting the determination of how far they can apply to the courts.
Which ends up being why a lot of these never get enforced. In some cases the companies would rather let you quietly break their terms than roll the dice and find out that they don't have the protections they tried to give themselves.
Ultimately the limits of EULAs are set in legislation. What really matters is consumer protections. And in issues like these and copyright more generally we are in a bit of a no man's land where the regulations are woefully out of date, not keeping pace with the new online-driven economy of digital goods and companies are mostly not trying to enforce a bunch of their EULAs anyway.
We end up in a system where a significant chunk of our online economy is decided by Google and social media companies by default.
Corporations want people to act like their EULAs are written in blood when they're just ramblings of an entitled child on the playground. What are you going to do? Ban them again?
Why are gamers still buying EA and Ubisoft? I thought we all banned them from civilized society ages ago. Just so you don't have to wait a few days: I was able to install my banking app in Murena's App Lounge, and setting it up and using it for a bit works just as well as my Nothing Phone! Honestly very suprised myself...

For now, there is only the /e/ default camera app (a fork of OpenCamera) on the Murena FP6, right? FP4 and FP5 at one point each got the native Fairphone camera app, hope Murena can deliver that for the FP6, too. /u
Two thoughts on that … Fairphone told participants of their 25 June 25 launch event in Amsterdam that going for a smaller display (which would be necessary for a significantly smaller device) would be making the device much more expensive.
You can use the plexus app off f droid to see. Maybe they have a website too. The app let's people upload reviews from their degoogled phones to tell people if a certain app works or not.
My take on how a decade (or more) of using cloud services for everything has seemingly deskilled the workforce.
Just recently I found myself interviewing senior security engineers just to realize that in many cases they had absolutely no idea about how the stuff they supposedly worked with, actually worked.
This all made me wonder, is it possible that over-reliance on cloud services for everything has massively deskilled the engineering workforce? And if it is so, who is going to be the European clouds, so necessary for EU's digital sovereignty?

I think link aggregator is fine, and most descriptive of what lemmy is. Its a place to post links to communities, and allows for comments on those links.
Nobody knows what the term means. Even Wikipedia doesn't describe Reddit as a link aggregator. For potential new users this is a massive turn off. Unless we want Lemmy to stay a niche community it needs to accommodate to layman terms.
Most people who land on the join Lemmy page don't even know what the Fediverse is.
I mean that someone made up the term "link aggregator" without realizing whether it was an accurate term to describe what it was. Or what it would become.
Eventually it grew far past a simple link posting site. What made Reddit and Digg popular was the user interaction. Not link aggregatition. It was a giant forum with many subforums. That is the simplest way to describe it for laymen. And a description should be for laymen.
Then why are there post types for just text or images? Because it isn't just a link aggregator. Same thing with Reddit. It hasn't been a pure link aggregator for decades.
Forums update threads by bumping, so threads from ten years ago can still be on the front page as long as they are active.
The term "link aggregator" was made to differentiate websites that are designed for threads to rapidly decay and be replaced by a constant flow of new content. If you tried to federate lemmy with a forum it wouldn't really work.
Maybe there's another term that could be used, but there needs to be a way to differentiate the two styles.
The term link aggregator makes me think of a search engine. A forum is based on user content. Forums generally make lots of new threads too. The only way forum threads stay active is when people bump them by responding to it. Lemmy posts also stay on the front page longer if people keep responding to them.
Lemmy posts are still designed to decay and fall off the front page. The posts last longer if they have participation but the only way to make something last a long time is to sticky the post so it doesn't decay.
Forums aren't like that. Forum threads are meant to stay around as long as people bump them and they can be ancient, with hundreds of pages of comments, and the thread still keeps getting bumped because new content is added to the thread.
Also, the way comments are organized is different. Our comments are threaded so we can have a conversation between us in a comment chain, but forum comments are sequential. The comments section of every thread would look way different if it was a forum.
Forums are just structurally different. If you don't like "link aggregator" that's understandable, it's actually not very descriptive, but you still need to be able to differentiate between forums and whatever-the-heck this space is.
The important point is that people who are not familiar with what Lemmy is can understand it feom reading its description. Other suggestions are possible too.
There literally are forums with ActivityPub support. Bumping is not some magic feature of forums. If you sort on Lemmy by activity you can get exactly the same behaviour.
And bumping is even often frowned upon because it pollutes active discussions. It's just people abusing how those forums sort threads.

Point. That's not the default behavior, though, and most users aren't using the site that way - and I'd argue the site isn't designed the be used that way, and that's why most users don't use that functionality.
And bumping is even often frowned upon because it pollutes active discussions. It’s just people abusing how those forums sort threads.
Not what I meant. I don't mean people making worthless "bump" comments (that often just gets people banned) I mean that forums bump up threads that get new comments.
Forum comes from latin and means a public square where people meet and gather for various activities. There is no need to use it only in such narrow, technology specific sense.
Agree. "Link aggregator" is understood to mean "reddit-like" without having to refer to a specific link aggregator as a point of reference. "Forum" is a different though similar thing. And a lot of the lemmy communities I subscribe to are literally link aggregators like people link to articles, git repos, etc to draw people's attention to, although I can see the issue with it referring to text posts too.
I agree that 'link aggregator' is a horrible term that is only relevant to nerds and shouldn't be used in any general user facing way as a description. I think this is the sort of thing that is really a collective failure of the fediverse and open source / free culture projects in general is how out of reach all of our lingo is to anyone not already in the in-group.

The one drawback to that is there is a General in the U.S. Army with my exact name who doesn't understand how email works and apparently gives out my email address as his. I wish I knew what his actual email address was so I could let people know what it is. I bet he's missing out on a lot of VA functions and barber appointments because he couldn't be assed to remember his actual email address.
