(Azure:) It's really wonderful that so many people on Fedi will not boost images without alt text! For some images, my headmates and I need alt text, and it means a lot that the people around us care.
But could we take it one step further? Often I'll see images with alt text that is bad. I don't mean just amateur or not very descriptive or too descriptive. I mean bad - it's not doing what alt text is supposed to do. Here are some examples, all of which we have seen multiple times:
1. A screenshot of several paragraphs, but the alt text is only a summary sentence, even though the content of the text is the point. (How it affects us: we should be able to read the image by clicking on the alt text, which can be clearer or at least bigger. And of course if you can't see the image at all...)
2. A meme; only the text on the image is included, and it's in all-caps in the alt text. (How it affects us: usually, the image part of the meme is there for a reason, and we tend to need help figuring out that reason. Also, we've heard of accessibility problems with all-caps.)
3. Just a couple emojis?? (This is bad because it is not alt text.)
If you've written alt text like one of these examples, this is an opportunity to learn! It's not the end of the world to make inaccessible posts, and now you know better. Thank you for listening!
And for those of us whose interfaces support it (and if they don't, they should): let's start checking the alt text before boosting! Bad alt text should not be inflicted on people who need alt text, and bad alt text should not be rewarded with boosts. If you have the spoons, you can even provide better alt text!

A lot of Apple's performance comes from vertical integration. They carefully size everything to avoid bottlenecks and they do this with profiling data that they get from controlling the OS and having access to a lot of key workloads. NVIDIA does the same with their AI chips. They design them with specific memory sizes and bandwidth in mind, for specific workloads driven by feedback from their big customers (when I was working with the team that built the Azure AI accelerator, they complained that NVIDIA got the data from MS AI and OpenAI on requirements before the in-house teams).
A lot of other CPU designs are hampered by the need, for example, to support a range if DIMM sizes and speeds. Pair them with the exact right balance and they do well, but they have to work with everything. Apple's SoCs are designed with a known amount of memory bandwidth, known latency, and known ratios of cache sizes to main memory.

in reply to Dan Gillmor • • •It isn't impossible for *good* interviewers to catch liars in lies on camera. Liars need to lie. Set them up correctly and they're almost certain to lie. It's the interviewer's job to make the lie obvious without shouting "That's a lie!"
But that means you don't edit. And, if you don't edit, you might as well do the interviews live. And that, I suspect, would see a spike in the number of politicians, et al, who refuse requests for interviews.
