So, #Threads is not in the Fediverse.
#BlueSky may become interoperable with the Fediverse and may be considered with gentleness but it will never become a part of the Fediverse.

Haven't watched the video yet, but will. Generally, the problem with this expanded definition of Fediverse to include #Bluesky and everone who interacts via 'decentralized' social media is that, while Fediverse has not always meant just ActivityPub, it has come to be pretty synonymous in general usage. And, lots of the literature and marketing descriptions of the Fediverse assume this meaning.

So now comes along Bluesky who says hold on all that ActivityPub centric literature (eg. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedive…) is wrong, we are (notionally) decentralized and part of the Fediverse too, invalidating and injecting confusion into something which was pretty clearly understood.
Using Fediverse this way robs it of specific useful ActivityPub centric meaning and simply makes it synonymous with open social web.
@mastodonmigration @Nelfan here’s the thing: I am trying to evangelize the fediverse to people who don’t even know what it is so we can get a lot more adoption and awareness. I’m taking a big tent approach I.e. Fediverse is not just apps that use activitypub (only technical people understand this) it’s a movement focused on wresting control from the walled gardens.
That said, I’ve heard this feedback before and so I have more often been referring to the whole movement as the open social web which is inclusive of ActivityPub and AT proto. While I know this is not perfect either I think it’s important that we clearly name and position our movement in order to advance it rather than confusing it with detail and nuance that few will understand.

Thanks for the response. What you are doing to evangelize the open social web is vital work. Completely agree with everything you have written above regarding educating people about walled gardens. The concern is that adopting Fediverse as an umbrella term synonymous with Open Social Web is actually contrary to this purpose because of the confusion it creates.

We are still in the formative stages of the Open Social Web. The taxonomy that emerges will have a big impact on its success. The ability to communicate clearly with the general public and with real meaning will greatly improve the ability to foster understanding, and spell out the value proposition. Alternatively, inconsistent and conflicting terminology will muddy this messaging to negative effect.

Right now we have two conflicting taxonomies. 1) Open Social Web for the umbrella, Fediverse for ActivityPub, and ATmosphere for ATProto. 2) Open Social Web and Fediverse for the umbrella, Fediverse for ActivityPub, and ATmosphere for ATProto. So, in summary, feel like we have a golden opportunity to add structure and definition to our emerging technology initiative by nailing down a lexicon that will improve our communications and not inject confusion. The one challenge that remains is that at events meant to bring the fediverse and atmosphere worlds together like we did at SXSW, it’s not ideal branding to say “come see us at the Open Social Web House!” 😀

Below is her listing on our website, she’s very sweet and in a dog-free home would make a wonderful house cat. When we give her and her kittens free time while the dogs are in another room, she often comes up for pets and will even sit on your lap.
We’re still hopeful we can find a place for her!

Compliant Mechanism Shrinks Instead of Stretching
Intuitively, you think that everything that you stretch will pull back, but you wouldn’t expect a couple of pieces of plastic to win. Yet, researchers over at [AMOLF] have figured out a way to make a mechanism that will eventually shrink once you pull it enough.
Named “Counter-snapping instabilities”, the mechanism is made out of the main sub-components that act together to stretch a certain amount until a threshold is met. Then the units work together and contract until they’re shorter than their initial length. This is possible by using compliant joints that make up each of the units. We’ve seen a similar concept in robotics.
Potentially this may be used as a unidirectional actuator, allowing movement inch by inch. In addition, one application mentioned may be somewhat surprising: damping. If a structure or body is oscillating through a positive feedback loop it may continue till it becomes uncontrollable. If these units are used, after a certain threshold of oscillation the units will lock and retract, therefore stopping further escalation.
