Turning PET Plastic Into Paracetamol With This One Bacterial Trick
Over the course of evolution microorganisms have evolved pathways to break down many materials. The challenge with the many materials that we humans have created over just the past decades is that we cannot wait for evolution to catch up, ergo we have to develop such pathways ourselves. One such example is demonstrated by [Nick W. Johnson] et al. with a recent study in Nature Chemistry that explicitly targets PET plastic, which is very commonly used in plastic bottles.
The researchers modified regular E. coli bacteria to use PET plastic as an input via Lossen rearrangement, which converts hydroxamate esters to isocyanates, with at the end of the pathway para-aminobenzoate (PABA) resulting, which using biosynthesis created paracetamol, the active ingredient in Tylenol. This new pathway is also completely harmless to the bacterium, which is always a potential pitfall with this kind of biological pathway engineering.
In addition to this offering a potential way to convert PET bottles into paracetamol, the researchers note that their findings could be very beneficial to studies targeting other ‘waste’ products from biological pathways.

FTA: When institutions and powerful individuals operate for long periods without scrutiny, they may be tempted to commit such outrageously corrupt acts that disclosing them to the people becomes an insurmountably difficult task.
For years there has been a lot of consternation about the refusal of federal agencies such as the CIA and FBI to disclose what they know about Jeffrey Epstein (as well as about the assassination of JFK, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the murder of Seth Rich, and countless other stories). Guys like me have also noticed how the U.S. government, including Congress, can’t ever quite seem to get to the bottom of the origin of SARS-CoV-2.
The truth of these stories carries incalculable liabilities—liabilities that would call into question whether the involved institutions should be allowed to continue existing.
Disclosing the truth could also instantly demolish the persistent naïveté that enables most people to maintain their allegiance to their governments and to believe the endless train of BS that we are told every day about everything.
I have experience with big liability cases. For a long time I investigated the mysterious deaths of Mary Mahoney on July 6, 1997 in Georgetown and Seth Rich on July 10, 2016 in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of D.C. The circumstances of both deaths strongly raise the suspicion of a political motive, but both were nevertheless chalked up to “botched robberies” by the Metropolitan Police.
Someone with power doesn’t want either death elucidated, and I was advised that pursuing my investigations would not only be frustrating and fruitless, but hazardous for my health.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She • • •I've been decolonizing whiteness pretty heavily in myself lately, and when I've written about it, it's resonated heavily with white people. It feels like there's a yearning in some to get back to our own precolonial roots. It's bigger than bigotry and race. It's a worldview that situates us in opposition to nature and drives us to dominate on behalf of our superiors.
This disconnection from our bodies, each other, and nature is unnatural, and we intuitively feel this while at the same time don't understand how to speak with our intuition. I've been on that journey for decades but only recently have had enough pieces to see the larger picture and associated those internal feelings with the ancient colonialism that my ancestors were absorbed into more than a thousand years ago.
But whiteness is the cult that America is indoctrinated with, and it's been no different than when I deconstructed the Mormonism I was raised in — difficult but enlightening.
I've been learning how to present these ideas to non-left people, and it's been resonating with some of my family. "Whiteness isn't about the color of your skin. It's an ideology that's been imposed on us that happens to use skin color as the starting point of who to exclude and rank. Here's how it works to keep all of us down." Lots of nodding and participating instead of defensiveness and arguing.
Reward/punishment is just the tip of our iceberg.
