It's not exactly retrocomputing but it kind of is. Someone has started a project to make an Apple Lisa-like UI that runs in the browser. It's not just a font/icon thing. The way you did things on Lisa was very different than how we do things nowadays. It was a document-centric not app-centric workflow. It's pretty neat and pretty faithful representation. At first I thought it was infinitemac.org project which runs Mac and NeXT emulators in the browser running the real operating systems. That too would be an interesting project for someone to explore. #RetroComputing #Apple #AppleLisa alpha.lisagui.com/

Voltage Divider? Filter? It’s Both!

When we do textbook analysis, we tend to ignore the real-world concerns for the sake of learning. So, a typical theoretical voltage divider is simply two resistors. But if you examine a low-pass RC filter, you’ll see a single resistor and a capacitor. What if you combine them? That’s what [Old Hack EE] did in a recent video, and you can check it out below.

It helps if you are familiar with Thevenin equivalents and, of course, Ohm’s Law. There’s also a bit of algebra, but nothing too complicated. The example design has a lossy filter at 100 Hz.

Of course, RC filters are easy to understand if you think of them as voltage dividers with a frequency-variable resistance, which is what the math is basically saying. The load impedance, in this case, is R2 in parallel with Xc at a given frequency.

He mentions that you might find a circuit like this in a power supply. However, it is also common to see this circuit wherever a divider drives a load with capacitance or even parasitic capacitance in cables or circuit boards.

We’ve discussed Thevenin equivalence modeling before. If you want really good filters, you are probably going to need op-amps.

The image features a vibrant cluster of pink flowers with long, slender petals, prominently displayed in the foreground. The flowers are densely packed, with a rich magenta hue and small black dots visible on the petals. The petals are arranged in a star-like pattern, radiating from a central point. The flowers are situated on a rough, gray rock surface, which contrasts with the vivid colors of the blooms. In the background, there are green succulent leaves with a rosette shape, adding depth to the composition. The overall scene is well-lit, highlighting the textures and colors of the flowers and surrounding foliage.

Measuring the Impact of Early-2025 AI on Experienced Open-Source Developer Productivity

"When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues—a significant slowdown that goes against developer beliefs and expert forecasts. This gap between perception and reality is striking: developers expected AI to speed them up by 24%, and even after experiencing the slowdown, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%."

Like so many papers on AI, this ignores the ethical aspects and any power analysis -- which would be just as problematic if AI tools actually made experienced developers faster. So it's the gap between perception and reality that I find most interesting. Keep that in mind when you see developers -- or anybody else -- talking about how amazingly more productive they are thanks to AI!

in reply to The Nexus of Privacy

this is still a useful argument to those who don’t care about ethics, like some corporations.
in reply to Demi Marie Obenour

@alwayscurious Agreed! That said, people who want to deploy AI will point out that tools are getting better, and come up with reasons that their situation is different than the specific one discussed in the study ... so tbd how useful it winds up being in practice on that front.

Bluesky is starting age verification in the UK on July 25

"We’ll use Epic Games’ Kids Web Services (KWS) to give our UK community choices about how to verify their age. If you’re in the UK, you can choose between methods like payment card verification, ID scans, and face scans. (See here to learn more about how KWS safeguards user information.) For people who are under 18 or don’t want to go through this process, we’ll make adult-appropriate content inaccessible, and we’ll disable features like direct messaging."

"Highly effective age assurance” is a requirement of the Online Safety Act, so they don't really have a lot of choice. Still, not good! And with the US Supreme Court recently upholding Texas' age verification law, we should expect to see similar policies in other geographies.

in reply to Cardboard!

@cardboard @iftas I guess none of us are going to have a choice in that. Either have your face or ID scanned or don’t use the services.
in reply to Ret

@ret @iftas so does that mean i have to give up discord, telegram and here, among other things?
in reply to Cardboard!

@cardboard @ret @iftas I always like to remind that "have a VPN" does not have to mean "that's owned by a private corporation who's inscrutable". You can run your own for the lowest cost of a droplet at somewhere like DigitalOcean or Vultr or whatever in another region.
in reply to Cardboard!

@cardboard @iftas potentially? I am no oracle, but it does seem like at least the centralised ones will start cracking down soon.
in reply to Ret

Yeah, it's hard to know but the trend is certainly in that direction. It's possible that small fedi instances without open registration might not be subject to this for the Online Safety Act (although that's certainly not legal advice!), but the EU is working on an age verification requirement, so is Canada, and there are bills in the US that could require it as well ... so it's hard to be optimistic.

@ret @cardboard

in reply to Cardboard!

@cardboard @ret @iftas Do want to point out it seems you can still use the sites,

"If users don’t want to verify their age, or if they’re under 18, they will still be able to have an account with certain features limited. Bluesky will block “adult-appropriate content” and turn off certain features, such as direct messaging."

in reply to The Vampire Fish Queen

True, but what is "adult-approriate content"? From what I understand about the dynamics in the UK, that could well include anything LGBTQIA2S+ related -- here in the US, many of the supporters of the proposed KOSA law (which would in practice require age verification) make no secret of the fact that it's targeting LGBTIA2S+ people. And things could certainly go that route for other "controversial" topics ...we'll see how things play out, but the scope is likely to steadily increase over time.

@TheVampireFishQueen @cardboard @ret

in reply to The Nexus of Privacy

And this just in via @dell here in the US, DHS' threat bulletins are describing ordinary behavior, like riding a skateboard or livestreaming, as threatening to law enforcement. OMG, we certainly wouldn't want to expose kids to that kind of threatening behavior!!!!!!!

Exactly. The original proposal for the Online Safety Act included regulating this "harmful but not illegal" content, but it got stripped out (it was so bad that even Kemi Badenoch was against it). Still, the govenment wants more power and "this will make everyody safer" is often a good way to spin it.

And here's a timely article by @mgeist about The Legal and Privacy Concerns of Mandatory Age Verification Technologies. It focus on Canadian legislation, but the risks and harms it discusses are applicable everywhere.

"A harm that proponents of these technologies want to mitigate is “the extent of youths’ exposure to sexually explicit material online, the frequency with which this material is of an aggressive or violent nature, and the potential harms to body image or mental health it may cause”. Opponents note that these technologies are harmful in that they would limit young people’s (especially those from marginalized groups) “access to online content or forums” that provide “avenues for community-building, civic engagement, and education”, as well as “self-discovery”. Further, use of such technologies comes with risk of data breaches that would publicly expose people’s online activities, consequently causing “psychological or physical harms” and possibly discouraging them from “operating freely in the digital environment”"

Fragmentation on the Fediverse is a real problem.

Hypothetically, let’s say I’m an admin. I don’t like "John Doe" (just a random example). Instead of simply blocking John Doe myself, I demand that "Billy Bob" — the admin of his instance — remove him entirely.

Billy Bob refuses, because John Doe hasn’t broken any rules. So, being an egotistical maniac, I blacklist Billy Bob’s entire instance — 5,000+ innocent users who had nothing to do with anything.

I also have 5,000+ users on my instance. Now you’ve got over 10,000 people who can’t communicate, all because of a personal disagreement.

This kind of thing happens far too often on the Fediverse. If you create more than one account (on different instances), you’ll likely discover people you didn’t even know existed — people you’d want to follow but previously couldn’t, due to the growing fragmentation across the network.

The scale of the problem becomes even more obvious when you move to a different instance. You’ll likely find that not everyone you currently follow can be followed from the new site.

The solution?

Right now, it means having more than one account just to keep in touch with everyone you want to follow.

How crazy is that?

@Linux

In your scenario, one of the problems is that a single person controls the social graph of 5,000 others. The other is that 5,000 people didn’t have enough information to understand that they were giving some of their freedom away to an unreasonable person.

In short, I don’t think Federation is the problem.

The solution may be more fragmentation. Break off those 2 communities of 5,000 people into 100 communities of 50 people, and suddenly that personal argument will « only » impact 100 people.

You don’t need multiple accounts if you’re in full control of the one you have.

in reply to Jeremy Herve

@jeremy

You want to overcome human nature — but that’s not going to happen.

People are inherently communal and tribal. A site with 5,000+ users is likely to attract 5,000+ more.

The Fediverse must operate within the limits of human behavior. We can argue that humanity should change, but that site will have over 250,000 users long before anyone seriously considers your argument.

I just want to know why (they think) the American people should suffer from higher prices and trade disruptions to make an ineffective political gesture to protect some corrupt foreign leader who is facing a trial in his own country for their own reasons? This isn't our business? Right?

Why do we need to run around helping Bolsinaro? I happen to know who he is but I can assure you most people in the US do not.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

@futurebird
It helps that neither #Trump nor most of his #maga supporters understand how tariffs work. (MS media has totally failed us here.)

So they don't understand that the #tariffs on Brazilian products, especially coffee, actually impact prices they pay in the US.

If a person doesn't understand that, and also thinks that their leader is strong and always right, then you can see how they would support his attempts to fight the "injustices" to Bolsinaro.
