Ich hatte ja gestern das Vergnügen, ein refurbished Yoga Thinkpad mit einem #Debian #Linux zu verwöhnen.
Schnelle Installation, ein bisserl Treiberfu und ein vergnügliches Einrichten (Browseraddons, Passwort-Manager...)
Am selben Rechner ist auch Win11 drauf. Das durfte ich auch auf letzten Stand bringen.
Abgesehen von der endlosen Upgrade-Orgie und dem schnarchlangsamen Bootprozess von Windows fiel mir aber etwas anderes, sehr bemerkenswertes auf, das ich berichtenswürdig finde.
Nimmt man ein nigelnagelneues Win11 her,öffnet den Browser Edge oder klickt links unten hin, wo bisher der Windowsbutton war (Gewohnheit) tun sich arge Dinge auf. Putin, Trump, Xi schauen da raus. Eine arme AfD-Influenzerin wird beweint, und alles löst nur Stress und Angst aus. Ein Wirbel aus Scheiße und anderer Scheiße schlägt einem entgegen.
Und schon klickst du drauf... vor Klickbait ist keiner gefeit... und die Scheiße wird mehr.
Bei der Suchleiste in der Mitte prangt gleich irgrnd ein Hinweis auf irgend ein Spiel. Dass daneben die Systemsuche ist, geht sogar unter.
Machst du die Systemsteuerung auf, Nudging, dass mit einem MS-Konto alles viel besser klappt und superer ist.
Nudging für ein One-Drive.
Nach 10 Minuten war ich fertig. Mit den Nerven.
Und ich kam zur Erkenntnis: würden mehr Leute Linux nutzen, wäre die Welt ein besserer Ort. Rein wegen der nicht verbreiteten Scheiße in einer Linux Standardinstallation.
Windows? Ich habe fertig.
(Wieder einmal. Ich schätze mich wirklich glücklich, seit vielen Jahren nur mehr Linux am Desktop zu haben!)

Universal Music have settled their lawsuit with Udio.
From the little that is known about the settlement, this looks like a big win for creatives:
- Udio immediately turned off downloads, and apparently will transition to a closed ecosystem where you can remix artists’ songs with their permission & only share them on platform. This puts control in artists’ hands and limits AI that is trained on real musicians’ work competing with them elsewhere.
- Billboard says opting-in musicians will be paid for both training & outputs.
- This is the second major gen AI copyright settlement (following Bartz v. Anthropic). Settlements provide no case law, but you would expect them to bring significant money to rights holders (Anthropic brought $1.5 billion).
(The devil will be in the detail - details on the settlement are scarce right now.)
Also remember that this is just 1/6 of the major labels’ complaints against Udio & Suno. Sony & Warner are still suing Udio; all 3 are still suing Suno. There are also 2 outstanding class action lawsuits against each company brought by independent musicians.

I know installing Windows of any version isn't a great idea, but I had no idea it was that bad.
I assume they meant that they don't want to feel "physical harm" seeing people try to circumvent Winshit 11. Officially there aren't any guidelines for something like this, and it just seems perfectly fine, they had to insert that reason because Google are the half assed boot licking hypocrites.

Hab dann mein altes MacbookPro 2011 gegen ein X1 Yoga Gen9 getauscht, welches nunmehr wunderbar mit #Fedora läuft.

Ansich wäre xmodmap ja ein Weg es irgendwohin zu mappen.
ABER
Unter wayland ist das Keymapping nach wie vor ein Graus sondergleichen. Und Linux will man eigentlich aus einem Security-Aspekt heraus nur mit Wayland nutzen. X11 ist so grenzenlos alt und anfällig... Aber Wayland nach 15 Jahren immer noch nicht wirklich production-ready... leider.

xmodmap war mir immer zu kompliziert.
Das wird wohl unter Wayland nicht mehr gehen, denke ich.
Mal sehen, wie ich das nach dem Systemwechsel mache.

Ich habe ja schon ein bisschen das Gefühl, dass Wayland "Dead on arrival" ist.
Das Ganze hat so lange gedauert, dass es zu dem Zeitpunkt, zu dem es wirklich überall installiert wird, im Grunde schon wieder veraltet und zu kompliziert ist.
Aber vielleicht irre ich mich auch.

Ich verstehe auch nicht, warum die Entwicklung von Wayland gar so derartig langsam ist...
Andererseits muss ich sagen, ich verwende Wayland nun schon seit sicher 10 oder mehr Jahren regelmäßig. Und in den meisten Anwendungsfällen funktioniert es tadellos.
Allerdings hat es ein paar Bugs by Design. Einzelne Anwendungsfenster von einem Remote Desktop zu holen... klappt nicht.
Mit x2go kann ich mir einzelne Anwendungen von einem Remote Desktop holen. Aber das funktioniert nur, wenn ich lokal X11/Xorg laufen habe. Auf einem lokalen wayland-Desktop stürzt das nur ab. Und sollte die Unterstützung von X11 dereinst einmal aus den Anwendungen raus fallen... geht es gar nicht mehr. Das ist in Wayland nicht vorgesehen. Es lässt sich auch auch anscheinend ins Protokoll nicht irgendwie reinstricken. Dafür sind irgendwo 2 Bit oder 2 Byte zu wenig vorgesehen. (So hab ich das grob in Erinnerung).
Und das halte ich für grundfalsch.

Ja, das ist natürlich doof... eine Weiterentwicklung sollte nach Möglichkeit nur Verbesserungen bringen und keine Nachteile.
Aber wo Licht ist, ist zumeist auch Schatten.
Ich für meinen Teil bin bei meinen Anwendungen noch auf keine Limits von Wayland gestoßen... zumindest nicht wissentlich. 😄
Remote Desktop Anwendungen hab ich halt privat nicht.
Aber siehst, weil ma grad drüber reden... ich hab Rustdesk noch garnicht ausprobiert, seit ich auf Fedora KDE gewechselt bin.

Im Grunde passt das X11-Konzept, eine leistungshungrige Anwendung läuft auf einem starken Server, aber die komfortable Bedienung auf dem schwächeren, aber ergonomischen Rechner, wo sie dann voll in die Arbeitsumgebung eingebunden ist, perfekt in unsere Zeit.
Ich denke, dass es Sicherheitsbedenken waren, die genau diesem genialen Alleinstellungsmerkmal der UN*X-artigen Betriebssysteme den Garaus gemacht haben.

Die Sicherheitsbedenken gehen schon in die richtige Richtung. Aber es waren andere.
Eine X11-Anwendung hat vollkommenen Zugriff über X11 auf jede andere X11-Anwendung. Und das ist eine Sicherheitslücke per se.
Unterbindet man das, gehen aber auch keine z.B. Screenshots mehr...
Aber es waren noch andere Sachen die zur Entwicklung von wayland führten.
X11 ist ein Monster. Ein aufgeblasenes Monster. Und große Teile des X11-Codes werden gar nicht mehr benötigt von "modernen" Anwendungen sondern von später angeflanscht wurden und den eigentlichen X11-Code umgehen.
Außerdem dürfte der Code so aufgeblasen und unübersichtlich sein, dass es keinen mehr gibt, der den wirklich versteht und warten kann... daher war es auch notwendig, ein System von Grund auf neu zu entwickeln.
Als X11 entstand, funktionierten Computersysteme noch ganz anders. Auch die Netzwerkkapazitäten waren ganz andere als heute.
Heute ist die Übertragung eines komprimierten JPG bzw. dessen Differenzen von einem Frame zum nächsten deutlich effizienter als Steuerbefehle für ein ganzes Fenster jedesmal neu zu übertragen. Als X11 erfunden wurde, gab es noch kein JPG... Damals wurden xpm-Bilder (die in Wahrheit ganze C-Programme sind) übertragen... oder eben SVG-Befehle zum Malen von Kästen, Icons u.ä.

Irgendwann ist es zu Tode geflickt.
Es hat nur einfach so lange gedauert, dass es inzwischen vielleicht fast schon wieder Zeit ist, an einen Nachfolger zu denken.

Meine Sis hat vor vielen Jahren einmal ein refurbished Thinkpad gekauft, wo kurz nach dem Ablauf der Garantie das Gerät sich nicht mehr laden ließ... tot.
Das ist wohl unter Pech einzureihen.
Meine Frau hat von mir vor ein paar Wochen ein refurbished Pixel Phone bekommen, wo leider der Lautsprecher zum telefonieren am Ohr kaputt war. Das ist gerade am Weg zur Reparatur auf Garantie.
Das alte Phone war auch von refurbished.at und musste ersetzt werden, weil es kein aktuelles /e/ mehr dafür gibt. Es gibt zwar noch Patches für das Android, aber in den Appstores sind einige Apps dafür, die sie oft nutzt, nicht mehr verfügbar für diese alte Android-Version. Und ein aktuelles Android gibts für diese Hardware nicht mehr. Daher ersetzen wir das Phone auch gerade. Ansonsten wäre es noch weiter einsatzbereit.
Ich selbst hab seit einem Jahr ein refurbished Pixel Phone im Einsatz. Das ist tiptop.
Ich werde auf jeden Fall aus Gründen der Nachhaltigkeit weiter meine Geräte von refurbished.at beziehen.

in reply to jakob 🇦🇹 ✅ • • •falls ihr zum reparierten Pixel Zusatzinfos bekommt, was genau defekt war bzw gemacht wurde um den Fehler zu beheben, wäre ich sehr interessiert daran die Infos auch zu bekommen 😀
Hab nämlich auf meinem Pixel (7 Pro) momentan auch einen defekten Ear-Piece Speaker, bin aber nicht sicher, ob der ganze Speaker ausgetauscht oder nur ein Kontakt neu gelötet werden muss. Der Speaker ist da drin echt vergraben, deshalb hätt ich gern mehr Infos bevor ich es eventuell wieder mal öffne 😅
