Cervical screening is a bit like those times you have to phone up customer service or visit the bank branch. It's never going to be a particularly fun or pleasant experience, but unlike spending six hours listening to hold music, at least there's some things that can make the experience better.
At every stage of cervical screening, you're in charge. Healthcare providers can make adjustments to the test so that it is accessible to you. Remember this.
Just like getting the haircut you want or having good sex, communication is key to making your cervical screening as comfortable as possible. This communication starts from the moment you book your appointment. If you hate waiting, it might be a good idea to book the very first appointment of the day. And if you feel like you'll need more time at the appointment because of adjustments you'll need, you can book a double appointment.
On the day, some people need to get themselves into the headspace for cervical screening, so make sure you choose a day where you're able to take time for yourself before and after the test.
A lot of invitation letters say "wear a dress" but lots of us don't wear dresses for various reasons ranging from it not being your style, to being a man. You don't need to wear a dress. The reason they suggest this is because during the test you'll need to undress the lower half of your body. During the test, your vulva will be covered by a drape, but some people feel exposed anyway. Baggy t-shirts or big jumpers are just as covering as a dress - wear what you feel comfortable in!
We would suggest that you probably shouldn't wear dungarees, rompers or jumpsuits to your cervical screening appointment though - anything where you have to get a bit naked in order to use the loo will also apply during your cervical screening!
You also do not need to shave or wax your vulva. The test works just fine with pubic hair, and the nurse sees tons of vulvas every day in every hairstyle imaginable. So just like regular life, what you do with your pubes is your business alone.
Once you're at the appointment, talk to the nurse about your preferences and feelings. You might have some adjustments to the test in mind, or you can work together to figure out a way of making the test most comfortable for you. Here's some things you could talk about...
If you've had a previous unpleasant cervical screening appointment talk to the nurse about it, and explain what made it unpleasant for you. They may be able to do something differently.
If there's any words for parts of your body that are off-limits for you for any reason, e.g. trauma or gender dysphoria, tell the nurse about the language you want used.
Some people like to know everything that's going on, and if you're one of those people, ask the nurse to narrate what they're doing.
Meanwhile, other people prefer to zone out entirely, put in headphones and watch something during the test. That's fine too! Cervical screening usually takes about five minutes, so bear that in mind when choosing something to watch. You're probably not going to blast through all of Pluribus.
If you have any health conditions which could make the test painful or severely uncomfortable for you, tell the nurse about this. This could be anything from gynaecological health conditions, to mental health, to back pain.
If you have a retroverted uterus (a tilted uterus), let the nurse know, as sometimes it makes your cervix harder to find. This natural variation is frequently only noticed during a first smear test, and you'll be told if you have it!
During the test, the default position is usually lying on your back, feet together, knees apart (or legs up in stirrups in some countries). However, this position doesn't work for everyone. You might have physical or emotional reasons why this isn't right for you. You can ask for an alternative position for your cervical screening, such as lying on your side.
The speculum is a part of the test that a lot of people find scary, painful or traumatic for many reasons. Again, there's adjustments that can be made to make the experience better for you.
Speculums come in lots of sizes. A lot of the time, medium is the default, but that's too big for some of us! You can request a smaller size of speculum.
You're also perfectly allowed to insert the speculum yourself if you'd like to take it at your own pace, or it helps you feel more in control of what's happening. If you're unsure as to how best to put it in, ask the nurse for guidance.
In the UK, plastic speculums tend to be used for cervical screening. In some countries, metal speculums are the default. These can feel cold, and you can ask to use a plastic speculum instead.
The test itself involves the nurse opening the speculum so they can see your cervix, then taking a sample of cells with a soft brush. This might feel weird, uncomfortable, or slightly painful. But it shouldn't feel seriously painful. If it does, please communicate this. It means that further adjustments need to be made for you, such as pain relief or specialist care. It might also point to a health condition that you didn't know you had, so it's important to make healthcare providers aware!
After the test is done, you might have slight bleeding or spotting, and may also feel cramping. This is because your cervix has just been interacted with, and sometimes it just does that. It's normal if it happens, and nothing to worry about, but contact a healthcare provider if the bleeding or pain is severe.
Some people might not be able to complete the test on a first attempt, and that's okay too. It's not a failure. You may have discovered further adjustments that you'll need for the test to be completed, and it's perfectly fine to re-book the test with the knowledge you've gained.
And once the test is all done, be proud of yourself! You've been part of the fight against cervical cancer, and have done something that could literally save your life. So treat yourself - you deserve it!
You will not necessarily be told if you have it. I know someone that went through 20 YEARS of annual excruciating PAP smears before someone told her. Once she found out, she told the docs and every appointment after that was minimally uncomfortable.
Lesson: if your PAP smear is really painful, ask if there is anything you should know that would make future exams better.

In my memory, those signatures were ignored. So I have not high hopes about your version of it.
They also produce some feelings of shame in the reader, who may print the E-Mail or put something into ChatGPT. I have my doubts that shame is a good tool for that.

ah I love this! I always thought the "don't print this email" message was wild, why would anyone print an email? And then a year ago I got a job at a warehouse where the boss (my age, mid 30s) printed SO MANY EMAILS. I had never seen anything like it and I could not dissuade her from doing it. Nor could I convince her to digitize paper records. Nor could I convince her not to use ChatGPT. I quit that job.
I never use Ai but I ask people to send me an email instead of sms or a whatsapp which I don't use either. My thought on this is that sending an email doesn't cost so much water than when I people use Ai. I write my own e-mails, born last century in 1967.

Unfortunately my employer insists we use a standard pre-authorised signature. They also encourage the use of AI as an 'efficiency tool' whilst also critising those who use it and make mistakes because of it. 🤷🤣

Though, primarily, it was out of a fear that the receiver would misinterpret my use of bullet points and double-dashes to mean that I was using a slop machine --
So I wrote after my sig along the lines of, "Hey, I've been using bullet points and double-dashes / em-dashes for years; I don't use machine generation, neither should you. I prefer your raw writing with errors and character, instead of sanitized, lifeless output."

@Troggie I was trying to find my reference photo for "why I shoot in RAW" when we were talking about it the other day, and I came across it while looking for something else.
The first image is as it came out of the camera, with the exposure metered on the bright sky and beach outside the cave. Lots of detail inside the cave is hidden in shadow, and a JPEG would throw all that data away. But it's still there in a RAW and you can bring it out with some simple processing.

Quando si esprime un'opinione in cui dimostra che un SOLO film, ripeto, un SOLO film, sia il migliore in assoluto per poi chiamare il resto un "troiaio", lo stai esprimendo in un modo prepotente.
Su Twitch una pratica del genere esprimere opinioni del genere dicendo al pubblico che non piace X senza chiarire il motivo o ponendo motivi poco vaghi mi fa lasciare perplesso, e lo vedo sfruttato come se fosse la parola d'ordine.
Quando parlo di film o videogiochi, io esprimo il MIO parere, ma molto solitamente NON raccomando a nessuno di guardare un'opera solo perché a me non mi è piaciuto.
Io non dico a nessuno di evitare di guardare Battlefield Earth come la piaga perché ci si può imparare molte cose anche in un film brutto se si vuole sviluppare un'affinità per trovare le cose che non ti piacciono in un film. Si adatta e si migliora.
Ma quando su Discord dico che mi è piaciuto The Gamers, e due persone mi dicono che L'onore dei ladri sia il film superiore di D&D, è come quei fanatici di Dark Souls che pensano che un gioco in cui la difficoltà non fa per tutti è il GOTY.
