Pirates: Torturing animals for fur must be banned
Strasbourg, 19/10/2023 – Pirate Party MEPs are joined by Pirate Party representatives from Germany and Luxembourg in supporting the European Citizens’ Initiative “Fur Free Europe”[1], which was debated today in the European Parliament. The initiative was signed by more than 1.7 million European citizens from 18 countries and must now be addressed by the European Commission. In 2021, the last measured year, the number of animals killed for fur was still 44 million per year. They are also kept in appalling conditions, according to Fur Free Europe.
Marcel Kolaja, Member and Quaestor of the European Parliament, comments:
“In my opinion, such cruelty simply does not belong in 21st century Europe. EU citizens obviously see it the same way and I am very glad that they have made that clear with their petition. I hope that the European Commission will now finally address the problem and present us with a clear plan to end the unnecessary suffering of animals. This is the ideal time to do so, because Russia used to buy most of its fur from the European Union. But interest has declined significantly due to the sanctions. The regions for which this sector was an important source of income are therefore desperately looking for a way out. And if the Commission also proposes support for the transition to another business sector, that will help everyone involved – people and animals alike.”
Marc Goergen, Pirate Party Member of the Chamber of Deputies in Luxembourg, comments:
“As Luxembourgish Pirates, we continue to advocate for a fur-free world in our country, in Europe and outside of the EU. During our first year in parliament in 2019, we asked the government in a motion to prohibit the sale of fur in Luxembourg, citing article 36 of the TFUE. Our motion was defeated, but we will continue to advocate for the abolition of animal cruelty. With a new government in place, we urge them to set a deadline for the retailing of fur in Luxembourg.”
Anja Hirschel, top candidate of the Pirate Party Germany for the 2024 European elections, comments:
“Animals of various species, simply called fur animals according to their use, are kept in farms under conditions that are simply cruel. And this for a product, that can long since be replaced by high quality alternatives. No one needs real fur except the animals born with it. Moreover, it has not only been clear since the Covid pandemic that fur farms, like other factory farms, harbour a danger for all of us that should not be underestimated: viruses find it easier to cross species boundaries there. It is in our best interest to do something about this. To really get there, we have to keep an eye on the entire supply chain. This of course includes imports from non-EU countries.”
German Pirate Party MEP Patrick Breyer comments:
“Fur farms and farmed fur products are completely out of date and have no place in our modern society. Apart from the cruel conditions for the animals that are kept there until they are killed, such facilities also have a significant impact on humans and animals alike as disease carriers. The EU Commission is now called to act, almost 2 million EU citizens must not go unheard! I call for a legislative proposal of the von der Leyen Commission that will finally put an end to this unethical and shameful industry.”
Fur farms are currently banned in 14 EU countries, but are for example still legally permitted in Germany under certain conditions. Finland, Poland, Lithuania and Spain, on the other hand, are among the most problematic countries, the initiative says. The European Commission must take up a citizens’ initiative if it collects more than 1 million verified signatures from more than 7 member states.

Chat control vote postponed: Huge success in defense of digital privacy of correspondence!
Tomorrow, Thursday 19 October, the Justice and Home Affairs Council will not adopt its position EU regulation on “combating child sexual abuse”, the so-called chat control regulation, as planned, which would have heralded the end of private messages and secure encryption. This is because there is currently not the required majority for the highly controversial and unprecedented regulation. Germany, Austria, Poland and Estonia, among others, are clearly positioning themselves against the current draft, but France also has questions. This is now the second time that the planned vote has been postponed.
Pirate Party MEP, digital freedom fighter and negotiator for his group in the European Parliament, Patrick Breyer, cheers:
“Without the commitment and resistance of countless individuals and organizations in Europe, the EU governments would have decided tomorrow in favour of totalitarian indiscriminate chat control , buried the digital privacy of correspondence and secure encryption. The fact that we have prevented this for the time being should be celebrated! I am particularly pleased that the multi-million Euro professional lobbying and disinformation campaign by a network of the EU Commission and supposed child protection lobbyists has failed for the time being.
Now the critical governments should finally do their homework and agree on joint demands . It is not enough to be against chat control. The suspicionless, error-prone screening of private messages is the most toxic part of the draft regulation, but the problems go far beyond that. We therefore need a new approach that focuses on preventive child protection instead of mass surveillance and paternalism! The last ‘compromise proposal’ of the Council Presidency must be fundamentally revised in at least 5 points:
- No suspicionless chat control: Instead of blanket message and chat control, the judiciary should only be able to order searches of the messages and uploads of suspects. This is the only way to avoid a disproportionate mass surveillance order inevitably failing in court and achieving nothing at all for children. There must also be no untargeted ‘voluntary chat control’ by Internet corporations.
- Protect secure encryption: So-called client-side scanning to infiltrate secure encryption must be explicitly ruled out. General declarations of support for encryption in the text of the law are worthless if scanning and extraction take place even before encryption. Our personal devices must not be perverted into scanners.
- Protect anonymity: Remove mandatory age verification by all communications services to save the right to communicate anonymously. Whistleblowers risk being silenced if they have to show ID or face to the communications service before leaks.
- Deleting instead of blocking: Instead of trying and failing to block exploitative postings via access providers or search engines, it should become mandatory for hosters and law enforcement to delete or have deleted reported exploitative postings at the source.
- No app censorship for young people: It is completely unacceptable to exclude young people from apps such as Whatsapp, Instagram or games in order to protect them from grooming. Instead, the default settings of the services must become more privacy-friendly and secure. The push for suspicionless chat control is unprecedented in the free world. It divides child protection organizations, abuse victims, other stakeholders, the Parliament and the Council. It’s time for a fresh start that relies on consensus. I am convinced that we can protect children and all of us much better with a new approach.”
Anja Hirschel, top candidate of the Pirate Party for the European Election 2024, comments:
“The push for indiscriminate chat control is a profound attack on our privacy and unprecedented in the free world. It divides child protection organizations, abuse victims, other stakeholders, the Parliament and the Council. It is time for a fresh start that builds on consensus. I am convinced that we can protect children and all of us much better with a new approach. And we can do it without sacrificing our fundamental liberties.”
Meanwhile, negotiations in the European Parliament will continue tomorrow with what is likely to be the final round of negotiations. On October 25, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson will have to answer to the LIBE Committee in the wake of the chat control lobbying scandal.[1] Already on October 26, the Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) is expected to vote on the European Parliament’s position and give a trilogue negotiating mandate, without a plenary vote by all MEPs planned. By the next EU interior ministers’ meeting in December, EU governments could then also have agreed on a position.
