Casting Shade on “Shade-Tolerant” Solar Panels
Shade is the mortal enemy of solar panels; even a little shade can cause a disproportionate drop in power output. [Alex Beale] reviewed a “revolutionary” shade-tolerant panel by Renology in a video embedded below. The results are fascinating.
While shading large portions of the panels using cardboard to cut off rows of cells, or columns of cells, the shade tolerant panel does very well compared to the standard panel– but when natural, uneven shading is applied to the panel, very little difference is seen between the standard and active panels in [Alex]’s test. We suspect there must be some active components to keep power flowing around shaded cells in the Renology panel, allowing it to perform well in the cardboard tests. When the whole panel is partially shaded, there’s no routing around it, and it performs normally.
It’s hard to see a real-world case that would justify the extra cost, since most shading doesn’t come with perfect straight-line cutoffs. Especially considering the added cost for this “shade tolerant” technology (roughly double normal panels).
You might see a better boost by cooling your solar panels. Of course you can’t forget to optimize the output with MPPT. It’s possible that a better MPPT setup might have let the Renology panel shine in this video, but we’re not certain. Whatever panels you’re using, though, don’t forget to keep them clean.

¿Cómo lo hacés? ¿Dibujás velozmente cuadrícula y piezas (símbolos, letras)? ¿Omitís la cuadrícula y tirás algunas líneas, flechas incluso, para fijar ubicaciones relativas? ¿Lista de coordenadas (ni pregunto por #notación Forsyth-Edwards: la supongo ignota salvo para programadores, no la podría usar sin un manual)? ¿Se ha inventado otro modo práctico?

De la estabilidad al caos: Portugal acude a las urnas por tercera vez en tres años
Este domingo, los portugueses tienen una cita con las urnas para elegir al nuevo Gobierno. Lo hacen después de que el Ejecutivo de centro derecha liderado por Luís Montenegro cayera, tras una moción de confianza rechazada en el Parlamento. Una moción de confianza precedida de dos mociones de censura también rechazadas. ¿El motivo? La empresa familiar del primer ministro con la que podría haber violado la obligación de exclusividad y haber incurrido en un conflicto de intereses.
Es la tercera vez en tres años que el país se ve obligado a ir a las urnas para unas legislativas anticipadas. Lo hizo en enero de 2022, después de que el Ejecutivo del socialista António Costa, apoyado por las formaciones de izquierda –la llamada Geringonça– cayera tras ver sus presupuestos tumbados por el Parlamento.
Esas elecciones, que dieron una mayoría absoluta al socialista, parecían haber devuelto la estabilidad al país, pero esta tan sólo duró hasta el 7 de noviembre de 2023, cuando el primer ministro se vio involucrado en un supuesto caso de corrupción y tráfico de influencias que se terminó desinflando en la justicia y en el que António Costa nunca llegó a ser imputado. Costa dimitió y el país volvió a las urnas. Pero en esta ocasión, fue Luís Montenegro, del Partido Social Demócrata (PSD), el que consiguió formar gobierno.
Ahora el país vota por tercera vez. En esta ocasión, la causa tiene nombre: Spinumviva, la empresa creada en 2021 por Luís Montenegro, que entonces no ostentaba ningún cargo político, y que se dedica a actividades de consultoría, viticultura, mediación de seguros y compra y venta de inmuebles.
Montenegro vendió sus acciones de la empresa a su mujer y a sus dos hijos en junio de 2022, tras ser elegido presidente del Partido Social Demócrata (PSD), una operación con la que pretendía evitar un posible conflicto de intereses y el incumplimiento de la ley de exclusividad. Sin embargo, según el Código Civil portugués la operación no es válida porque Montenegro está casado en régimen de gananciales, por lo que las acciones de su mujer son también suyas. Además, la sede de la empresa era la casa familiar del primer ministro y los datos de contacto, su móvil personal.
Uno de los principales clientes de la empresa es Solverde, un grupo de hoteles y casinos que paga un fijo mensual de 4.500 euros y del que Montenegro fue abogado antes de ser elegido presidente del PSD. El grupo empresarial tiene una concesión de cuatro casinos que se termina este año y cuya renovación depende del Gobierno. El semanario Expresso desveló también que todos los demás clientes de Spinumviva fueron conseguidos por Montenegro.
La oposición pidió explicaciones pero Montenegro sólo las dio con cuentagotas y a regañadientes. “Tengo cosas mejores que hacer que responder todos los días a vuestras preguntas”, dijo en un momento en la Asamblea de la República y el Partido Socialista (PS) pidió una Comisión Parlamentaria de Investigación (CPI).
Montenegro rechazó por completo la comisión y lanzó el órdago de la moción de confianza, sabiendo que el PS votaría en contra y que, de esa forma, el país estaría abocado a nuevas elecciones. “Si la oposición no asume la legitimidad política del Gobierno para gobernar, es mejor dos meses de suspensión de la estabilidad política que un año y medio de deterioro y parálisis”, dijo entonces, acusando al PS de intoxicar el ambiente político.
“Hay un lectura política por parte de Luís Montenegro que aprovecha el momento para lanzarse a por elecciones anticipadas e intentar así legitimarse por la vía electoral, distanciarse un poco más del PS y aprovechar que Chega parece estar en un momento valle”, explica el politólogo José Adelino Maltez.
Por ahora, los sondeos le dan la razón en parte. Pese al escándalo provocado por la empresa, los portugueses no parecen castigar a la coalición Alianza Democrática –formada por el Partido Social Demócrata (PSD) de Montenegro y el Centro Democrático Social (CDS)– que lleva tan solo un año gobernando.
“Lo que indican los estudios es que los ciudadanos reprueban los comportamientos poco éticos de los políticos pero, en la práctica, eso influye poco en el sentido del voto”, explica el politólogo Hugo Ferrinho.
El último sondeo publicado, de la Universidad Católica para la televisión pública RTP, radio Antena 1 y el periódico Público dan la victoria a la AD con un 34%, frente a los 26% del PS. Un escenario que deja al Ejecutivo lejos de la mayoría absoluta en el Parlamento –incluso aunque incorporara los votos del partido liberal Iniciativa Liberal(IL)– pero que refuerzan la posición de Montenegro.
“Aunque Montenegro gane solo por dos o tres puntos más que las pasadas legislativas y tenga que construir otro gobierno minoritario, será siempre un Ejecutivo más sólido que el anterior y, lo que es más importante, consigue relegitimarse políticamente”, sostiene el politólogo António Costa Pinto.
Al PS estas elecciones le han pillado a traspié, “con un secretario general, Pedro Nuno Santos, que lleva poco más de un año al mando, tras ocho años de gobernación socialista y ante un Ejecutivo que lleva tan solo un año gobernando y que, por eso, tiene poco desgaste”. “Es un contexto muy poco favorable”, advierte Costa Pinto. Y así lo plasman los sondeos, que no le dan la victoria en ningún caso y ni siquiera contemplan la posibilidad de que la izquierda pueda sumar.
“Los estudios de opinión dibujan una composición parlamentaria muy parecida con la que tenemos ahora: la AD lejos de la mayoría absoluta, una izquierda que no suma y Chega, que aunque pueda llegar a ser esencial para la formación de una mayoría de derechas, no entra en estas cuentas”, dice Ferrinho.
Montenegro lo había dicho en la campaña de 2024 y cumplió: “No haré ningún acuerdo de gobernación con Chega. No es no”. Y lo sigue manteniendo. La fuerza de extrema derecha, que en las últimas elecciones dio un salto de 12 diputados a 50, con 18% de los votos, aparece en los sondeos con números muy parecidos.
“Es todavía temprano para saberlo, pero podemos estar ante un estancamiento del crecimiento de Chega. Para ello, puede ser decisiva la cifra de abstencionistas, el lastre de las elecciones portuguesas. El año pasado, la tasa de abstención bajó hasta el 48,6%. Se trata de la segunda bajada en 20 años y hace falta retrotraerse hasta 1995 para encontrar una cifra más baja. En 2024, el aumento de participación benefició a Chega por lo que, si vuelve a subir, la abstención podría perjudicarle.
Por lo pronto, los datos de participación del voto anticipado son positivos. Más de 94% de los 333.000 inscritos en el voto anticipado ya han enviado su papeleta. Pero representan tan solo a un 4% del electorado por lo que es difícil hacer una lectura correcta.
“Existe un fenómeno que ocurre en los países con muchas repeticiones electorales, como Portugal ahora, que es el de la fatiga electoral y que puede motivar el abstencionismo”, cuenta Ferrinho. “La repetición lleva a pérdida de interés y los votantes se abstienen”.
Por otra parte, cabe la posibilidad de que, viendo que Chega no va a ser incluido en ningún acuerdo de Gobierno, “los votantes elijan apostar por el voto útil en la AD o IL, como manera de garantizar un gobierno de centro-derecha estable”.
