First run in nearly four weeks, finally had time between travelling, working and low temps. Lungs still there, legs a bit stiff, I so need to remember to stretch even when I don't run.
Paddy the Irish mutt was also happy to be out in temps that is more normal for us northern souls. Though there talk about 26c on Friday, in Denmark, that's that's like 40c for a French person in French Pyrenees in France ;)

In un periodo in cui si parla molto di “terre rare” e “minerali critici” appare di interesse il documento redatto nel maggio 2025 dal Research and Trend Analysis Branch dell’United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), ovvero l’Ufficio delle Nazioni Unite contro la Droga e il Crimine dal titolo Global Analysis on Crimes that Affect the Environment – Part 2b: Minerals Crime: Illegal Gold Mining.
Questo rapporto fa parte di una serie di analisi globali sui crimini che colpiscono l’ambiente. In particolare, la Parte 2b si concentra sul crimine minerario, con un focus sull’estrazione illegale dell’oro. Il documento è stato redatto in risposta alla crescente preoccupazione per:
- l’aumento della domanda di minerali critici per la transizione energetica,

Questi crimini includono attività illecite lungo tutta la catena di approvvigionamento dei minerali: dall’esplorazione all’estrazione, raffinazione, commercio e produzione finale. L’obiettivo è comprendere le dinamiche criminali, i danni ambientali e sociali, e proporre risposte politiche efficaci.
In particolare:
Domanda crescente e vulnerabilità: la transizione energetica globale aumenta la domanda di minerali critici (rame, litio, cobalto, ecc.). Questa pressione crea opportunità per attività criminali, corruzione e instabilità nelle catene di approvvigionamento.
L’oro come caso emblematico: l’oro è particolarmente vulnerabile a traffici illeciti per via del suo alto valore, facilità di trasporto e difficoltà di tracciabilità dopo la raffinazione. Le raffinerie internazionali sono punti critici per l’intervento normativo.
Attori coinvolti: gruppi criminali organizzati (OCGs), aziende legittime coinvolte in pratiche illecite, commercianti, raffinerie e minatori artigianali. Le OCGs usano l’oro per finanziare altre attività criminali e mantenere il controllo territoriale.
Impatto ambientale e sociale: uso di mercurio e sostanze tossiche, deforestazione, inquinamento di acqua e suolo.
Violazioni dei diritti umani: lavoro forzato, sfruttamento sessuale, lavoro minorile, violenza e sfollamenti.
Corruzione e riciclaggio: frodi documentali, concessioni ottenute illegalmente, uso di società di comodo per riciclare proventi illeciti. Le lacune normative e la scarsa trasparenza facilitano l’infiltrazione criminale.
Dall’analisi emergono alcune Raccomandazioni Politiche:
Transizione energetica giusta: risposte mirate per ogni tipo di minerale e contesto geografico.
Due diligence e trasparenza: rafforzare i controlli nelle raffinerie e nei centri di commercio. Sistemi di tracciabilità, audit indipendenti e divulgazione pubblica dei dati. Risposte adattate al contesto locale
Distinguere tra attività illegali e informali: incentivare la formalizzazione dei minatori artigianali.
Responsabilità aziendale: le aziende devono garantire il rispetto dei diritti umani e ambientali lungo tutta la catena.
Rafforzare l’applicazione della legge: maggiore cooperazione internazionale, uso di tecnologie (droni, AI, blockchain), formazione e risorse per le forze dell’ordine.
Migliorare la raccolta dati: standardizzazione dei dati, criminalizzazione uniforme dei reati minerari, cooperazione tra Stati.
Il crimine minerario, in particolare l’estrazione illegale dell’oro, rappresenta una minaccia globale che richiede risposte coordinate e multisettoriali. È essenziale garantire catene di approvvigionamento trasparenti e responsabili per sostenere una transizione energetica equa e sostenibile.

Edited to add: For anyone who prefers to go straight to the binomial coefficients without talking about simplicial numbers, you can count a set like the subset of {1,...,n}^d satisfying:

where there are k non-strict inequalities by taking all the subsets of size d of the union of {1,...,n} and k “coordinate equality tokens” like x_2=x_3. Given such a subset, you can get an ordered d-tuple that satisfies the conditions by putting all the numerical elements in ascending order, then using any tokens like x_2=x_3 to fill it out to d coordinates.

After the original Buhler et al. paper came out, there was a mini-industry of combinatorics people figuring out other ways to prove the 𝑏ⁿ count, eventually including a very simple encoding using length-n strings on a size-b alphabet. That turns into a nice back-door proof of Worpitzky's Identity, if you need another one.
(I don't know a canonical citation for the simple argument. There's a nicely-illustrated version in the slide deck at faculty.washington.edu/etou/do…, the sides about "Juggling Cards" and "Counting With Cards", but ignore the incorrect attribution of the modern argument to the original Buhler et al. paper.)
Ik took me a while to figure out what you were talking about, but I think I get it now. If you split a "discretized" cube into 6 tetrahedra, the cubes on the inner boundaries of tetrahedra have to decide in which tetrahedron they should be if we do not want to double-count cubes.
Pretty amazing that the number ways of double counting a sub-cube for an N dimensional cube is related to the Eulerian numbers!

With Mastodon v4.4.0 instance owners can enable HTTP referrers. That means:
If somebody clicks a link in a Mastodon post (e.g. to a news article), the link target owner (such as the news site operator) can see that a user from that instance has visited their website.
They do _only_ get the instance domain (e.g. metalhead.club). No information about the user!
I've enabled this setting, because I am sure that it will increase awareness of Mastodon's existence. 💪

err.... neither Elliott nor I was arguing for leaving; Elliott's argument as I read it is recognising that the ECHR's role is always 'negotiated' to an extent, but also that it is required as brake on moves towards an extensive elective dictatorship....
@coe @davidallengreen @humanrightswatch He was arguing for a scrapping of the HRA & replacing it with a "Bill of Rights", similar to the one proposed by Dominic Raab, as I read him, a proposal rightly rejected. I have no idea what you mean by the role of the ECHR being "negotiated". If you mean a restriction of the right of appeal to it, I would be wholly opposed.
Well, I've just re-read the article & the nearest he comes to 'arguing' for leaving the ECHR is if there were robust human rights protection embedded in a UK constitution, but as this is not the case nor could be in the current political environment he clearly does not then advocate withdrawal, while recognising there are a range of ways of protection human rights. So you and I are reading the article differently, I'm afraid.
@coe @davidallengreen @humanrightswatch I don't agree with leaving the ECHR, full stop, not even with "robust #humanrights protection embedded in a UK constitution", but there is no sign of that - rather, the reverse. The HRA & the ECHR may not be perfect, but they are the best way we have of protecting human rights at the moment, & we also have the @commissionerHR of the @coe.
And that would be Elliott's position too - while he thinks one could leave the ECHR in cretan circumstances & you don't, the pragmatic conclusion he reaches effectively parallels yours....

I fear that academics like Elliott are giving unwitting aid & comfort to those who WOULD take us out of the ECHR. They don't need very much excuse, & will take whatever intellectual cover they're provided with.
Hmmm.... I accept that point; as an ex-academic, sometimes we do want to explore things without recourse to how it might be deployed by those we actually disagree with....
I think, when it comes to protection of basic human rights, it's a mistake to try and "navigate the current debates" - the aim has to be to place them beyond debate. I've suggested before inserting an anti-repeal clause in the Human Rights Act, mirroring the one in the Treason Act 1540: "It shall be high treason for any person, by word or by deed, to procure or do any thing to the repeal of this Act".
I think Elliott's point is that all law is essentially fluid, but he is supportive of the core aspects of human rights..... but equally given the right's previous record, you may be right an attempt at reasoned argument just opens the door to fanatics
