Really not digging Apple adding another #DarkPattern without user consent.

How is this even legal in EU under GDPR?

Settings option to Learn from this App is active by default. I was never asked to consent.

The only way of opting out is manually disabling the setting for every 👏🏻 single 👏🏻 app 👏🏻 you run on your iOS device.

Apple will say this is all on device. But if I see no benefit, why even opt-in. And coupled with #AppleIntelligence this becomes a lot more complicated. I don't want my app usage analyzed whatsoever.

Gli analisti di CloudSEK hanno scoperto che gli aggressori stanno attaccando hacker poco qualificati utilizzando un falso generatore di malware. Gli Script Kiddy vengono infettati da una backdoor, che viene utilizzata per rubare dati e successivamente assumere il controllo dei computer.

18.459 dispositivi in tutto il mondo sono stati oggetto di tali attacchi, la maggior parte dei quali si trovavano in Russia, Stati Uniti, India, Ucraina e Turchia.

“Una versione dannosa del builder XWorm RAT è stata trasformata in uno strumento di attacco e ha iniziato a essere distribuita”, riferisce CloudSEK. “È rivolto agli script kids, neofiti nel campo della sicurezza informatica, che scaricano e utilizzano direttamente gli strumenti presenti in varie guide”

I ricercatori scrivono che il malware contiene un “interruttore” che è già stato attivato per rimuovere il malware da molte macchine infette. Tuttavia, a causa di una serie di limitazioni, molti sistemi rimangono ancora compromessi.

Il builder infetto è stato distribuito in vari modi, inclusi repository GitHub, piattaforme di condivisione file, canali Telegram, video YouTube e vari siti Web. Tutte queste fonti pubblicizzavano il builder XWorm RAT come uno strumento gratuito e affermavano che non era necessario pagare per questo malware.

Tuttavia, in realtà, il builder stesso conteneva malware che controllava il registro di Windows per individuare eventuali segni di un ambiente virtualizzato e smetteva di funzionare se il risultato era positivo. Se l’host soddisfaceva i criteri dell’infezione, il malware apportava le modifiche necessarie al registro per imporsi nel sistema. Ogni macchina infetta è stata registrata sul server di controllo di Telegram utilizzando un ID codificato e un token bot di Telegram.

Il malware ha quindi rubato i token Discord, informazioni di sistema e dati sulla posizione (tramite indirizzo IP) dal computer dell’hacker compromesso, trasferendoli al server degli aggressori. Successivamente il malware attendeva di ricevere altri comandi dai suoi operatori.

In totale, la backdoor supporta 56 comandi, ma i ricercatori ritengono che i seguenti siano i più pericolosi:

/machine_id*browser: ruba password salvate, cookie e dati di compilazione automatica dai browser;
/machine_id*keylogger – registra tutto ciò che la vittima digita sulla tastiera del suo computer;
/machine_id*desktop: cattura lo schermo della vittima;
/machine_id*encrypt*: crittografa tutti i file sul sistema utilizzando la password fornita;
/machine_id*processkill* – termina alcuni processi, inclusi i processi del software di sicurezza;
/machine_id*upload* – download di file specifici dal sistema infetto;
/machine_id*uninstall: rimuove il malware dal dispositivo.

CloudSEK rileva che gli operatori del malware hanno rubato dati da circa l’11% dei dispositivi infetti, principalmente acquisendo screenshot e rubando informazioni dai browser.

Gli specialisti dell’azienda hanno cercato di distruggere questa botnet utilizzando token API hardcoded e uno switch integrato progettato per rimuovere malware dai dispositivi infetti. Per fare ciò, hanno inviato un comando di cancellazione a tutti i client, cercando tra tutti gli ID conosciuti delle macchine infette, che hanno estratto dai log di Telegram. I ricercatori hanno anche forzato gli ID da 1 a 9999, suggerendo che gli aggressori avrebbero potuto utilizzare un semplice schema numerico.

Sebbene ciò abbia comportato la rimozione della backdoor da molti sistemi infetti, le macchine che non erano online al momento dell’invio del comando sono rimaste compromesse.

A narrow, medium shrub up to 2.5 metres high by about a 1-metre spread. The stem-clasping leaves are stiff, concave, about 200 mm long and 120 mm wide and variegated in a range of colours from cream, yellow, orange and red, changing colour with the seasons. Firstly, the proton CEO took the position of supporting Trump by saying that "they are standing up for little people". Saying that reps are good supporters of antitrust laws.
Secondly, the official proton account replied to his post and agreed on the fact that reps are more likely to defeat big corps against monopoly.
They deleted their post later. (The proton official post)
So since then we cannot stand in a corp that is promoting these people.
That's why I asked about riseUP

He doesn't have to be incorrect in order for people to feel betrayed by his comments. The commenter was answering the question of why people felt betrayed. Demonstrating the incorrectness of the CEO's take is out of scope.

(Although, he definitely is also incorrect. Republicans love corporations and monopolies even more than Democrats do. They're slightly more nationalistic about it though, which is the only reason they ever make noises to oppose corporations that aren't sufficiently US-owned.)

I think the "he" there was @anonymous@lemm.ee, not the CEO of Proton.

The comment from anonymous implied that there was no real betrayal. Just because someone fights for digital privacy does not mean he's on the same side for other topics. Feeling betrayed and actually being betrayed are not the same thing.

Many feel betrayed because he (partially at least) politically aligns with someone (and something) they loathe intensely. The feeling of betrayal probably comes from an implied idea that because they align on the issue of digital privacy they naturally do so in other aspects, and with the comments made by the CEO that idea is burst and someone who once felt familiar is now foreign.

"Betrayal" might be a wrong word for it, but I find this disappointing because the current events are the reason I have tried using Proton instead of Gmail. A tweet wont ruin the functionality of Proton, but it goes against my personal rationale for making the switch.

Personally I've been using Tutanota and bitwarden happily. I guess it kinda depends on what you're looking for alternatives to, I don't know if anyone else offers as comprehensive of a complete suite of stuff

Ah, gotcha. Yeah I can't say that really bothers me too much... 😅

I'm not sure there are really any big names in that space that don't suck anyway. Like the other two I'm familiar with are google and Amazon, and they're hardly saints.

A "roll your own" solution with keepass and something to sync might sidestep that problem but is hardly a drop in replacement that appeals to all the same users

Those recommendations would probably be more useful to the person who was asking for recs, though it's worth pointing out your solutions to certain things aren't really 1 to 1 alternatives and may not be suitable for someone who's looking for services akin to proton

Nothing in that article suggests Proton doesn't care about privacy. Every country has laws that must be abided by. Their verbage on not logging IPs was misleading but not inaccurate as they weren't until ordered to by law. At that point the law was able to find the person because of lack of opsec on the perp's part.

Besides that, to my knowledge all of Proton is open source and encrypted. It has been audited and proven to be secure.

Quit letting politics ruin our collective privacy by suggesting to people that Proton is now an evil company. They support Trump because they think his business policies will benefit their company. True or false as that may be their company is still great for privacy and we shouldn't be infighting about that.

Unless I'm missing something, didn't Yen just praise 🍄's pick for antitrust AG? I forget her name, but her Wikipedia page didn't make her sound all that great, so I'm not sure what exactly he was praising her for. If that's all it is (and it might not be!) that hardly sounds like a betrayal.

Praising the pick wasn't so bad. The issues really arose when he was called out on it and chose to use Proton's official accounts to affirm his view and went on to state:

the republican party is now the party of the people and most likely to crack down on big tech
The democrats have effectively betrayed their voters in favour of corporate donations
This was Proton's official stance

It was insane boot licking and incredibly poorly thought through. It's fine for him to have an opinion but completely inappropriate to use their official accounts to spew such drivel and to state it was the official stance should have resulted in him being fired for damaging their reputation.

The tweet he commented on was indeed a nice idea, but a CEO should have more foresight that the things Trump stated in it would not be true.
When you look at it now, it looks like it was more or less a threat that led to a closer relationship between "tech bros" and the current administration instead of the "take down" of them.

Running a company that people are supposed to trust with their privacy and security and doubling down on praise for a political party that has been using state surveillance to hunt down people for choices they make with their own bodies as the party of the "little guy" does mean I'm never going to trust you again, though.

This specific comment thread is focused on that because that was the topic started by the choice of words of the first comment.

The conversation would not have continued in that direction if instead of doubling down there simply were an admission that what really was meant to say is not that Proton betrayed some hypothetical anti-Trump principles they had, but that they have proven now being sympathetic towards Trump and this made people feel unsafe (and some branches of the thread implied that conclusion).

What's being argued is that this is not surprising. This is as silly as thinking that Zuckerberg is a betrayer because of the recent changes in moderation policy, as if Facebook was ever on the side of any particular political ideology other than their own interests.

What makes you think tuta is against all and every policy coming from the far-right including the ones that align with their stated goal of digital privacy? If (hypothetically) tuta had some level of relationship with a left-wing party (pick your favorite) and made a post about how they are happy about certain changes that party is pushing that are beneficial to privacy, would that be a betrayal of their own principles? I would say it's not, regardless how many alt-right customers might "feel betrayed" if they had some parasocial alt-right image of tuta.

In 2024, Nate’s model accurately predicted the exact electoral map.

He doesn’t do any polling. He aggregates other pollsters, weights it based on past performance and then uses other factors (he calls them fundamentals) to produce an outcome. And I think it’s misguided to suggest that Democratic leadership is looking at Nate’s polls to reinforce their own positions.

Here’s a quote from a column he wrote for the NYT

It may even feel as though we’re Ping-Ponging between radically different futures, never quite certain what lies around the bend. Yet on the whole in 2024, polling did not experience much of a miss and had a reasonable year. Ms. Harris led by only one point in my final national polling average. And Donald Trump led in five of seven key states, albeit incredibly narrowly. The final polling averages were correct in 48 of 50 states.
The final Times/Siena national poll (including third-party candidates) had Mr. Trump one point ahead. There was plenty of data to support a Trump win.

Remember that the Biden campaign had an internal poll showing Trump winning \~48 states in a total landslide victory, but they maintained that Biden was the best candidate.

When I opened up Lemmy this morning I could not believe my eyes. The top story was a headline from Forbes stating:
« ‘Open Source And Ethical’ TikTok, WhatsApp And Instagram Alternatives Could Transform Social Media ».

The article mostly focused on #Pixelfed and did a fairly good job explaining how #ActivityPub works. But they spelled #Mastodon « Mastadon » over and over again with no links to it. Yikes.

B for the effort, but please editors do better!
