On August 28 and 29, California Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled two sweeping initiatives that together mark a sharp rightward turn in state policy and expose the Democratic Party’s deepening complicity in the destruction of democratic rights. As he portrays himself as a bulwark against President Trump, Newsom is in fact laying the foundation for a massive expansion of state power against the working class and the poor.Under the guise of public safety and compassion, the Democratic governor has placed the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at the center of two major new enforcement regimes: a statewide “crime suppression” expansion and a “homeless encampment clearance” task force.
These measures are being marketed as alternatives to Trump’s deployments of federal forces into major U.S. cities, but in substance, they mirror their basic functions. Far from opposing the authoritarian measures emanating from Washington, Newsom’s actions mimic them, signaling a growing alignment between the Democratic Party and the Trump administration on the fundamental issue: the use of state repression to deal with the social crisis created by capitalism.

So I may as well mention that Mrs Kedge decided to go back to the US for the foreseeable future.
Having seen the protest outside the consulate in Edinburgh, she felt that she wasn't doing enough to fight the fascists in her own country, and she wants to be there for her daughter.
We chat every day, have no plans to divorce, and we have the resources to support living separately. However, my green card was void as soon as I was outside the US for more than six months without prior permission, and has been officially rescinded - not that I'd travel there under this regime.
Mrs Kedge may have two or three months grace before her UK visa renewal next year is in jeopardy. It is entirely possible that we'll see each other only for visits here or in Canada.
It's a shitty situation, but I remain as ever, extremely proud of her.

The thing about the 80/20 rule is that with the time and resources it takes to close the gap of the last 20% of a given skill, I could often reach the 80% mark on a whole host of other things.
I tend to be a specialized generalist: I'm happy to hit 80% at many, many things (and get closer to 100% on a select few). It gives me a broad skillset and field of reference that transcends knowledge silos and helps me build bridges. (Your mileage may vary.)
The nice thing about being a specialised generalist is that it doesn't even require all that much effort to rise above the average in a specific field or skillset.
And the most important thing you can learn is where yours ends, and you are better off engaging a true specialist.

I have two small ones that will just keep a few appliances running. This solution sounds even better without the commitment to a permanent install.
