Great write up thank you. I had an account, but never really explored it properly. While I haven't been on Facebook in years, I think I was in some sort of Facebook mode when I tried it, and I never quite 'got it'. My expectations were all wrong, and all the fiddly bits a bit overwhelming.
Time to correct this.
in reply to Jarulf

@jarulf thank you for the feedback!

The two biggest advantages of Friendica to me are the superior reading experience (for Fediverse posts and imported blogs) and the ability to format your own posts (basically like having a federated Wordpress blog, without the hassle of setting it up)

in reply to ⁂ Elena Rossini ⁂ ✏️✨📸

and that is exactly what I want. I posted a while back about wanting some sort of 'landing page' for the open web, something that brought all these different services together that could give me a quick overview of things in my feeds I might want to check out. With support for all these protocols as well as RSS, together with the circles, it looks like Friendica could be it.

I expect I will not be alone in signing up for an account (again) now.
And let's help with funding, when we can.

in reply to Jarulf

@jarulf wonderful to hear! And it sounds like you would love Friendica now, with the right account setup.

I now feel compelled to reach out to my instance’s admin asking how I can donate. His page is in German - maybe I can help him with a translation and to create a fundraising page (if he so wishes).

in reply to Tim Chambers

ah I will edit the piece Tim to add that clarification (I’m currently at the beach with family, will do so ASAP). And thanks again for the great work you’ve been doing with the group! ✨

When you start working on Lemmy review, can you test how Friendica interacts with it?
Lemmy, Kbin(not working), Mbin and Piefed (piefed.social) all work in same system but Lemmy.world (due Reddit exodus) got big and is first choice for many with lesser Lemmy instances showing up.
So I am interested how smooth it is. I like Kbin/Mbin style for reading threads. Really liked Kbin but without going into detail it was flooded by spam, so using Mastodon/Misskey.io and Hubzilla at times.
in reply to Kotking

@Kotking I will for sure. Thank you for the tip and for the insights.

I’m super curious to test Lemmy’s interoperability (as a longtime Reddit user, sad about its current direction and management)

@Elena Rossini ✏️✨📸 About Lemmy is Considering that you have already had the opportunity to know the potential of Wordpress for the Fediverse, I leave you this post on an interesting trick

@Kotking

Is it possible to publish posts on Lemmy from your Wordpress blog? If this post appears in the @wordpress@lemmy.world community then this hypothesis will be confirmed!

wonderful post. I'm one of these users who took a look, but never tried it because of the dated UI. But after reading your post I'm going to change that. Thx!
in reply to Chris 🦑

@sturmsucht thank you Chris! Let me know what your impressions are after you've used it a bit 😊

this is my favourite article about Fediverse and so helpful. Thank you for your series about Fediverse. It’s great. I read every articles about it.

Now I have to try Friendica and check all features. Sounds very interesting. I now what I’ll do in the weekend.

@smatyszczak thank you sooo much Sebastian 💗

I highly recommend you immediately change the content scope in Settings (as described in my piece)… otherwise your feed would get immediately inundated by posts of people you don’t know/follow.

And let me know how you find it. Friendica has a bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it’s so amazing ✨

This really makes me want to move to Friendica, or at least something not Mastodon. I hate how limited the text and formatting options are, even though ActivityPub supports proper HTML posts.
in reply to Shrutarshi Basu

@basus i understand but I wouldn’t recommend moving to Friendica… its infrastructure is not as solid or reliable as Mastodon… i mostly use it to read/consume content - it’s the perfect Fediverse content hub
in reply to ⁂ Elena Rossini ⁂ ✏️✨📸

@Elena Rossini ✏️✨📸 @Shrutarshi Basu Interesting you say that its not as solid or reliable as mastodon. Slow might be a better term for it. Its pretty solid and reliable. Problem is that because it has so much going on, its got to do a lot more. Mastodon is much more lightweight and does a lot less which is why its so much faster. The worst lags come from clicking on a circle feed. The devs don't take monetary donations just coding time donations so it development is sadly slower. They don't want to have to deal with the legal hassles of splitting money and possible taxes. Its always been a collective project at least since I joined in 2018 with no real head unlike with Mastodon with Eugen as the leader.
You mentioned the quaint look. It too is very customizable, which is why I made the video that its also a myspace alternative and you can really give it a myspace vibe if you want to which just feels like coming back home after myspace died.
An extra note about misskey. It was created in Japan and has a lot of japanese web vibes to it. A really good westernized version is called firefish. Unfortunately firefish.social is also their beta platform not their stable version which is very weird. ibe.social is a instance I would recommend. Try both, there are many different misskey forks. some more or less buggy than each other, it also has many friendica like features such as groups, though no where nearly as robust. I was going to switch to building my sustainable community toolkit on top of firefish but its too buggy and unstable for that and typescript doesn't appear to scale as well as PHP so it can slow down a lot once you have beyond a certain number of users.
Shrutarshi, I would create an account and explore friendica until you get comfortable with it. It does take some serious getting used to because there is too much choice. Look up friendica tutorial on youtube and you will get my 6 part series, and I will try to get pt 3 up in a week or two on channels which can turn it into basically a tiktok/IG alternative. You definitely need to keep your mastodon account for a bit until you are sure you have a good grasp on it, then you can switch over. I had a masotodon account alongside friendica which was my main hub until last year when they fixed an annoying issue with photo uploads, and will keep pixelfed around until they make video upload easier. Apparently video uploads are possible but not easy.

> … its infrastructure is not as solid or reliable as Mastodon…

Sry but I can't confirm this.

Actually it's even quite imprecise, as you would need to define "infrastructure". There is more or less no infrastructure in the case of mastodon, except mastodon.social and the other server hosted by the gGmbH.

The friendica community has an own forum and even git server.

If you want to be on the safest side @basus, check out squeet.me, the admin is the main friendica coder.

The infrastructure and resilience of a software also depends on the resources that the server on which the software runs makes it available. CPU power, amount of RAM, disk space available for the database and bandwidth can make a lot of difference. The most powerful hardware resources come at a cost that not everyone can afford in the long run, especially those who host self-hosted instances.

Friendica, like Wordpress and many other application software, is written in PHP, a scripting or programming language interpreted and not compiled like Rust. As a result it is slower. Below in the link are some guidelines for system engineers to make PHP a little more efficient.
