Lebanese-American writer, poet and visual artist Kahlil Gibran was born #OTD in 1883.

He is best known as the author of The Prophet, which was first published in the United States in 1923 and has since become one of the best-selling books of all time, having been translated into more than 100 languages.

Russian feminist and activist Maria Trubnikova was born #OTD in 1835.

Trubnikova hosted a women-only salon which became a center of feminist activism. Alongside Anna Filosofova and Nadezhda Stasova, whom she mentored, Trubnikova was one of the earliest leaders of the Russian women's movement; the three women were referred to as the "triumvirate".

Wilkie Collins' drama The Frozen Deep is first presented in a private amateur performance featuring Charles Dickens, staged by him at his London home, Tavistock House.

Dickens added a preface, altered lines, and attended to most of the props and sets—that the principal edition of the play is entitled "Under the Management of Charles Dickens".

The political drama Danton's Death (Dantons Tod, completed and published in 1835) by Georg Büchner (died 1837), is first performed, at the Belle-Alliance-Theater in Berlin by the Vereins Neue Freie Volksbühne.

Büchner was in constant fear of being arrested whilst writing Dantons Tod. It only reached print in 1835 after being heavily cut and having the politics softened by sexual innuendo.

Baroness Emma Orczy's play The Scarlet Pimpernel, adapted by Julia Neilson and Fred Terry, who play the leads, makes its London debut at the New Theatre, followed shortly by publication of the novel.

Published after the success of the play, the novel was an immediate success, gaining Orczy a following of readers in Britain and the rest of the world.

Konstantin Stanislavski and Edward Gordon Craig's seminal symbolist Moscow Art Theater production of Hamlet opens.

The most famous aspect of the production is Craig's use of a single, plain set that varied from scene to scene by means of large, abstract screens that altered the size and shape of the acting area.

English polymath Isaac Newton was born #OTD in 1642.

Newton's book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, first published in 1687, achieved the first great unification in physics and established classical mechanics. Newton also made seminal contributions to optics, and shares credit with German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz for formulating infinitesimal calculus, though he developed calculus years before Leibniz.

French educator Luois Braille was born #OTD in 1809. He was the inventor of a reading and writing system named after him, braille, intended for use by visually impaired people.

At just 15 years old, Braille began refining Barbier's system, developing a code based on a six-dot cell structure that allowed for efficient representation of letters, numbers, and even musical notation.

The première of Oscar Wilde's comedy An Ideal Husband takes place at the Haymarket Theatre in London. In April, on the last day of the Haymarket run, Wilde was arrested for gross indecency; his name was removed from the playbills and programmes when the production transferred to the Criterion Theatre, where it ran for a further 13 performances, from 13 to 27 April.

Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20. Her name first appeared in the second edition, which was published in Paris in 1821.

Except in Canada, where copyright was extended from death +50 to death +70 in 2022… Canada, where public domain day has been cancelled for 20 years, where children will grow to adulthood without seeing a single new public domain work. 😞

Uruguayan playwright, poet, and short story writer Horacio Quiroga was born #OTD in 1878.

He wrote stories which, in their jungle settings, used the supernatural and the bizarre to show the struggle of man and animal to survive. He also excelled in portraying mental illness and hallucinatory states.
