Hello Fedi Friends!
I hope you had a lovely weekend.
On my end, I've been getting an education re: decentralized messaging apps, #E2EE and censorship over the last week.
I incured the ires of #Meta for using a bridge to access my #Instagram inbox. The same issue has been reported a lot over the past 3 days in the #Beeper subreddit.
At the end of the day, I'm happy I moved to #Signal in 2020 and I'm very curious and eager to learn as much as possible about #Matrix.
My BFF is an expat living in the Middle East and I find a lot of stuff about messaging and censorship absolutely fascinating. Like: did you know that Signal is blocked in a certain Middle Eastern country where the use of VPNs is illegal? But 99% of people there use Whatsapp to communicate? Even if Meta says Whatsapp communications are E2EE? Fascinating right? 🤔
There is so much to discuss about this, so I enlisted the help of a Matrix expert. I will most likely publish a piece about this for #TheFutureIsFederated next week.
Wishing everyone an amazing week! (And I'm using Friendica to write about this for its amazing post formatting and to bypass character limits).
cheers,
Elena

People over profits is the real magic of fedi
We're building the future ✨
No shareholders. Just people.
Yeah, we'll probably see monetization and corporate interests join the fedi, and that's okay because the power of the protocol lies in choice
And the best fediverse platforms are open source and mostly good stewards of AP interop
Y'all made this happen, us devs can only take so much credit ❤️

As long as the kind if monetization ain't morally apprehensible it's actually kind of a good thing. Running instances is hella pricy at some point after all.
I just fear the time when big companies start to aggressively join incl. their whole marketing lying schemes and exploitative behaviour…
@Natanox I agree, I think its a good thing for users to be able to support their admins financially, and I am looking into that for Pixelfed.
It may require some paperwork, and stuff, but if I could make it easy for admins to get a portion of in-app purchases and facilitate direct donations to admins, I think that would help with the burden of costs associated with running an instance!
I recently read about the idea of "patron posts", i.e. giving people the option to set their profile up so people with invested interest in your work/art can subscribe to individual accounts.
This would both attract artists and entertainers (won't use "content creator", imho it's a derogative term), but could also finance the very instance they use if there's f.e. a 1% cut on every transaction.
Would be hell of an implementation nightmare to properly work with the "change instance"
Given you develop both Pixelfed and Loops this might be an interesting direction. 😀 Definitely keep an eye and ear open in the #Owncast and #Peertube community whatever you do though regarding the topic, there's vested interest by many to enable indies living off of their work there too! And perhaps the fine people at @librecast can help with content delivery in terms of network design in the near future too!
( tl;dr please kickstart a movement lol )
the natural state of the web and other technologies is federated. Think DNS, Web, Mobile, Email and now social media.
Monetisation is not a dirty word because creators, developers, admins etc need to keep the servers on and the apps developing but profit maximisation above all else just for shareholders is not the goal of the fediverse.
Money is another industry that needs federation. e.g bitcoin micropayments called SATs sent P2P over the lightning network is the future.
I really like how @elenarossini refers to this as "magic", I totally agree! To learn more about connecting your site to the fediverse, read Elena's blog post here blog.elenarossini.com/the-futu…

I would love it to grow, and I think the Fediverse is a very important ecosystem.
But to achieve that, Mastodon also needs to grow up with much better user safety tools.
Especially things that some other platforms have, such as controlling who can reply or answer.
I realise that's not necessarily that easy to implement, but I think that without it, a lot of people will no longer find this a safe (and fun) enough place.
@ilijastuden Your (any mine) experience isn't everyone else's.
Listening how other people experience things here is mega important if you don't want to push people away.

One of the really important parts here is how the only moderation tool that's available to her to stop the harassment is to delete her entire post. Blocking the harassers does not stop them being able to interact with each other on replies on her post. And been unable to limit replies to followers makes alt accounts for harassers even more effective here.

"Only"? What about Block&Report? In my experience moderators have been quite quick and responsive dealing with overt violations of server rules, and ready to defederate from instances that don't enforce those rules. But the mods can't do shit if you don't report.
@artemesia
She quite specifically says blocking them does not stop them continuing to interact with each other on the thread. It only stops her seeing it
I understand that even if they can no longer see her posts they are still there, still seeing everyone else's and still visible to others. It's also potentially draining whack-a-mole work.
Reporting assumes that the harassers host admins give a shit. Anecdotally if they don't it can also lead to .targeting
You know that admins on your own instance can block or limit users on other hosts, and defederating from the offending instance will be discussed? Perhaps my experience with mods has been more positive than yours.
@artemesia
I have a small and relatively inoffensive account. But I listen to and believe victims of harassment. I think it's interesting that the most pushback I get is when I try to amplify their voices.
The short answer is no, not everyone gets a good response from their own admins, and no "just move then" is not helpful advice.

Mastodon moderation tools need improvement.
Please listen to disadvantaged groups and individuals who are victims of bullying and harassment.
There are many examples where the Mastodon moderation capabilities are weaponized against disadvantaged people.
Please share widely.

I don't have any complaints (I love it here), but I beg you to check out some recent posts by @vkc, as they highlight patterns of abuse that most people aren't aware of -- and because she has done everything reasonable and possible to block the abusers, but still gets targeted.
I still worry that Mastodon is effectively invisible to website owners because of `noreferrer` on outbound links. I know the community has spoken, but I'm not sure about the trade-off.

Hi, feel like promoting #mastodon ? We are going to raid elon Musk’s #centralized #proprietary #twitter #twixxer #x promoting to migrate here. If you feel like promoting the #fediverse against proprietary centralized social media, this is your chance. Feel free to post links below and to boost the ones below 😀. #foss #elonmusk #elon #musk #hatespeech #transphobia #racism #protecttranskids
I no longer promote Mastodon to anyone. The harassment problem needs to be solved before I would do so, because while I am as replete with white privilege as can be, the vast majority of people I consider friends are highly marginalized in one way or another.
I am here strictly because it has no monetization being attempted, but I am already scanning the horizon for what else is being developed. My guess is it will talk to Mastodon, in a limited way, if things continue as they have.
Chiming in here just to say Mastodon is great and thank you.
It must feel oppressive. Everytime you post something, people take the opportunity to catalog their issues and complaints. In large measure it's because people love Mastodon and just want it to get even better, but it must be hard.
Folks, here's a person who's devoted his young life to creating something very special, not to get rich, but to make the world better. So, thank you Eugen, and yes we'll keep spreading the word.

@Bam
I mean with all the antisemitism baked into the fediverse from it's eastern european origins, and not dealt with in any serious way on purpose, with jewish voices overwhelmed, abused, and regularly and systematically silenced in defending ourselves, I really can't suggest Mastodon or any of the other Fediverse social media to anyone. I'm glad it was available when I left Twitter, but I can't recommend it
@Evan Prodromou Exactly. This is not about becoming huge with the aim of attracting venture capital (well, maybe for Mastodon it is a bit like that 😈), but it is about giving the opportunity to the greatest number of people to access the free social networks of the free fediverse

🇬🇧 Hello everyone! This is my first post from my new Friendica instance (@poliverso.org) after this weekend's account migration.
I'm having such a positive experience - compared to my previous instance - that I'm inspired to write a new post about it for my blog The Future is Federated.
The biggest lesson I learned is that when you encounter federation problems, the issue may be with the instance (and not the software).
I love Friendica and Poliverso.org! Special thanks to the latter for making my Friendica experience so much more enjoyable (everything just works).

🇮🇹 Ciao a tutti!
Viva Friendica e Poliverso.org! Un ringraziamento speciale a quest'ultimo per aver reso la mia esperienza su Friendica molto più piacevole (funziona tutto perfettamente).
