I remember reading this and considering it old news at the time. Hersh is not a very good source for much. He's also really bad at checking his sources when he likes what they are saying.

Everything points to a psyop, to be honest. I mean, the leaks themselves are not very impressive and the media was all over them when they mostly ignored similar, more important stories. (The NYT even published an article dismissing WikiLeaks’ and Snowden’s revelations in favour of these ones. There were even interviews with people who allegedly knew the leaker before he was detained or identified by name.) There are discrepancies in the news coverage (the NYT defined the leaks as “fresh” while Joe Biden said the info in them was “not contemporary”). It all seems badly scripted.
