iRant: Find My Teases ETA
While I generally enjoy using my various Apple devices, there are some major pain points and endless minor papercuts that I run into every day. Some of these would be understandable, even acceptable, in the v1 of a given service/app but instead of being fixed, they linger for years, untouched by the glacial yearly OS update1 .
For a while I considered collecting them up to write a detailed blog post on them but instead I’m going to just publish them as I run into them.
Today’s grievance is a small annoyance in Find My (Apple app/service for tracking people/things). I share my location with a number of friends/family and my #1 use-case is “How far out is person X?” so that I can plan around that. Should I put the dogs up? Should I set the table? Do I have time to finish something before they arrive?
As with many Apple papercuts, it’s something that sort of/mostly works. It works just well enough to show you how good it could be, before immediately disappointing you.
When I tap on a person in Find My it loads a card with more information including how many miles away they are and the estimated drive time. Perfect! It’s exactly what I want, blog post over, all is well!
Except… They show the drive time for approximately 5 seconds or less then it disappears for no discernible reason.

Why Apple? Why do you show me a very helpful “2 min” and then take it away? Why calculate it at all if you are only going to show it once, briefly?2
I’d file a Feedback, but I worry they would “fix” it by removing the time estimate entirely. Then again, submitting a Feedback is about as effective as shouting into the void. It would be closed when then next OS shipped with a “please recheck”, or they’d ask for a sample project without reading the report.
Do better Apple.
- Yes, I know they release multiple minor point releases throughout the year but that seems to be more focused on just shipping, almost, everything promised in WWDC/iPhone Launch than fixing bugs or improving existing apps. In “recent” (10+) years, Apple seems to find it acceptable to abandon the attention to detail that first attracted me to their platforms. ↩︎
- Yes, I know I can tap on the “Directions” to open their location in Apple Maps which then will show the distance. That’s what I do every time, but why? They clearly can show on the main page, why only show it for 5 seconds? ↩︎

Duden toiminnan yhdestoista vuosi oli hämmentävästi samaan aikaan sekä rankka että palkitseva, henkilökohtaisesti ja yrittäjänä. Siksi viimeisin täysi tilikausi oli meille eräänlainen "välitilikausi", toipumista muutoksista ja omilleen pääsemistä. Onhan sillä vissi muutos, kun esimerkiksi puolet omistajaporukasta vaihtaneet maisemia ja uutta porukkaa tullut taloon. On myös huomattavan paljon vaikeampaa kirjoittaa avoimesti firman blogiin silloin kun ei mene hyvin. Mutta yhdenkään vuoden katsausta ei olla skipattu, eikä skipata nytkään. Madonluvut on taas avattu.
Kahdennentoista tilikauden tulos jäi tavoitteesta, mutta liikevaihto nousi lähes miljoonaan (960kEUR). Se on kova saavutus pienestä liikkeelle lähteneeltä WordPress-talolta, joka on silti pitänyt kiinni arvoistaan ja hinnastaan.
Alalla on kova kilpailu ja Dude ei useinkaan voi kilpailla hinnoilla, kun ei olla välttämättä se halvin toimija. Alan jatkuva hintojen polkeminen herättää ristiriitaisia ajatuksia: eikö palvelulla, kattauksella, laadulla, pitkäikäisyydellä, kestävyydellä ja ylipäätään tekemisen tasolla ole enää merkitystä? Vain hinta ratkaisee? Läpyskät vierekkäin ja halvin toimija tekemään? Redandbluen Petteriä lainatakseni: "Nähty hintataso ei voi olla kannattavaa ja kestävää, ainakaan jos verot maksaa Suomeen". Toivon, että alan taantumasta päästään ylös, edes jollain tasolla. Jos ei muulla, niin kustannustehokkaammilla ratkaisuilla. Niiden kehittelyyn tilanne meidätkin pakottaa.
Mutta elämme arvojemme mukaisesti: Läpinäkyvyys, Laatu, vastuullisuus, rohkeus, välittäminen, kehittyminen. Teknistä velkaa on kertynyt ja sitä kurotaan parhaillaan, toivon mukaan saamme pian uudet Gutenberg-lohkot tuttuun tapaan GitHubiin kaikille jakoon. Monta asiaa kehittyy yhtä aikaa.

Ajat ovat kovat ja kilpailu alalla kiivasta, sen tietää varmasti kaikki. Olemme yhä pitäneet kiinni hinnoistamme, vaikka monesti on niin, että kauppa jää hinnasta kiinni. Nolla on kuitenkin meidän mielestä parempi kuin miinus. Emme halua emmekä voi kusettaa tai polkea omia hintojamme. Projekteissa sweet spot on meillä 10 000 - 30 000 €.
Asiakastyytyväisyys on Dudella huippuluokkaa! Asiakaspalvelu ja palautteet on meille aidosti tärkeitä ja on ilo huomata, että ollaan todistetusti onnistuttu. Uusimman asiakastyytyväisyyskyselyn tuloskin sen kertoo, sillä NPS on 93!

ma (come ho detto in alcuni commenti qui), altri dati e informazioni o non li condivido o sono inesatti, e così mi applico a postillarne qui due, per ora, dicendo che:
- la “scrittura asemantica” chiamata in causa da Andrea è erroneamente legata a testualità lineari o prose, mentre riguarda esclusivamente un ámbito artistico/grafico, trattandosi di glifi e grafie illeggibili;
- a proposito di romanzo, non mi sono mai in questi vent’anni spostato di un centimetro rispetto a quel che dicevo in questo pezzo (pubblicato nel 2007 ma scritto due anni prima): gammm.org/2007/05/02/opera-dis… – quindi non è preciso sostenere che la mia insofferenza è diretta verso il romanzo in assoluto; semmai occorre dire che riguarda il romanzo-TIPO, che è ahinoi pressoché l’unico o quasi l’unico che si trova sugli scaffali (e nelle case/teste degli) italiani oggidiani.

Aber ich verstehe inzwischen, dass aktive Frauen aus Deutschland keinen oder einen englischsprachigen Wikipedia-Artikel haben

@JaneraTiciano stimme dem ersten Part zu, bei der Wikipedia Spenden entziehen wäre ich aber sehr vorsichtig. Einmal mehr seit dem Frontalangriff der Tech-Broligarchen, GrokAI, etc.
Als temporäres Druckmittel, um positive Veränderungen in Richtung mehr Demokratisierung und Gleichstellung (auch) der Geschlechter zu erreichen: dafür!
Die englische Wikipedia hat das Problem ja nicht annähernd auf dem Level, dass alle Artikel zu Frauen als per se irrelevant angesehen werden.
