the last handheld I tinkered with was a playstation portable aeons ago; it was the perfect handheld snes emulator

My sd card lasted about a month, but it has some fun games for a memory trip.

OK, here's the issue. We have fifty-two feast days a year where work simply stops right now. We call them "Saturday".

Like, for my family in Poland it was a *big fucking deal* when they finally got Saturdays off some time in the seventies.

yeah, let’s bring back the feast of st. John the Baptist and Lughnasadh.

I could use some summer holidays. (The dutch have none between may and december)

I have two days off every week. That's 104 days per year. Add to that 6 weeks of paid vacation. That's another 30 days. To top it off there are about 10 public holidays per year like easter, christmas etc.

Also, I lived for a while in Bavaria, Germany, and got the impression that they still have a ginormous number of saint-related holidays there.

In Denmark we recently lost our "Great Prayers day" which since 1686 had replaced a number of penitence days. So you could say that Christian reformation was what (partly) happened.

In all fairness the 20th century gave us weekends, 37 hours workweeks and min. 5 week holidays.

In 1836, Indiana's Mammoth Internal Improvement Act authorized eight major canal projects on a $10 million loan.

After the Panic of 1837, the state went broke; by 1841 it could no longer make interest payments, and of the eight projects, none were completed by the state and only two were ever finished - by London creditors who took them over.

The Central Canal was supposed to run roughly 300 miles down the middle of the state. Only about 8 miles around Indianapolis were ever built. That stub still exists — it's the Canal Walk downtown, now a beautiful pedestrian promenade. See the picture!

South of the city you can still find unfinished culverts, locks, and an abandoned aqueduct where work stopped in 1839. Anyone got good pics of those? I like the melancholy charm of such things.

Next: the Clinton-Kalamazoo canal, which was supposed to go all way across Michigan!

There are cool canals in your very same island, such as the Llangollen Canal.

I remember having seen an article about it in a book about travels resting in my shelf. That's why I'm writing this. ​​

Metamora Indiana also has a half-finished canal, dating back to just before the Civil War.

It was supposed to be an artists colony, and was until the Interstate system. Now, Metamora is a place of sadness and buying cheap garbage at inflated prices. No artsists left.

The Chesapeake and Ohio canal towpath has been converted into a pretty fun bike trail
