The French coup d'état of 1851 prompts Victor Hugo to be a leader of an unsuccessful insurrection against it. He is forced into exile, initially to Brussels, then Jersey, from which he was expelled for supporting L’Homme. He finally settled with his family at Hauteville House in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, where he would live in exile from October 1855 until 1870.

#OTD in 1867.

Charles Dickens begins a U.S. reading tour in New York City.

During his visit, Dickens was giving lectures, raising the question of international copyright laws and the pirating of his work in America. He persuaded a group of 25 writers, to sign a petition for him to take to Congress, but the press were generally hostile to this, saying that he should be grateful for his popularity & that it was mercenary to complain about his work being pirated.

Thanks! I learned a lot about her I didn’t know from that Wikipedia article.

I’m curious what this means though:

”In her Personal Recollections Somerville expressed the opinion that mathematical science was at a low ebb in Britain, due to a reverence for Newton that prevented scientists from adopting calculus. On the Continent astronomical and mechanical science had reached a high degree of perfection.”

Does it mean advancing past what Newton had done?

in reply to Chris Walter

@ChrisWalter

Probably yes but not 100% sure about it. I was reading her Recollections (pags. 77 & 78) and it says that "Newton himself was aware that by the law of gravitation the stability of the solar system was endangered... La Place, and all the great mathematicians of that period, had scarcely passed away when the more powerful Quaternion system began to dawn.

sorry the title just kinda read like the setup of a joke 😅

in reply to Project Gutenberg

I like Bohmian mechanics because it explains quantum mechanics in a "classical" lens. I like the idea that waves and particles are both physically real, where waves tell particles how to move and particles perturb the waves like skipping a stone on the water. I like the idea of "objective collapse" where any measurement device must interact with the particle in order to measure its information, and that interaction creates the illusion of wave function collapse. I like the polarizable vacuum and I think that Bohmian mechanics fits well into this. I like the idea that time dilation, length contraction, light refraction, gravity and inertia have a simple emergent explanation that is based on electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.
