Needle is an #elixir library that we have developed to provide universal foreign keys, shared data fields, and virtual & configurable schemas for Ecto.
When using a relational DB (such an Ecto schema with a Postgres table), usually a foreign key field has to be pre-defined with a reference pointing to a specific field in a specific table.
Needle is one of several libraries we're releasing. Beyond creating extensions for Bonfire (like misinformation labeling or metadata extraction for scientific publications), we often need to build foundational functionality. We package these into reusable libraries for the wider Elixir ecosystem.
When using a relational DB (such an Ecto schema with a Postgres table), usually a foreign key field has to be pre-defined with a reference pointing to a specific field in a specific table.
A simple example would be a blogging app, which might have a post table with author field that references the user table.
A social network, by contrast, usually requires a graph of objects, meaning objects need to be able to refer to other objects by their ID without knowing their type.
A simple example would be likes, you might have a likes table with liked_post_id field that references the post table.
But what if you donโt just have posts that can be liked, but also videos, images, polls, etc, each with their own table, but probably do not want to have to add liked_video_id, liked_image_id, ad infinitum?
We needed the flexibility to have a foreign key that can reference any referenceable object. We call our system Needle.
Besides regular schemas with universal foreign keys (Pointable), Needle provides Virtual for schemas that donโt have any fields on their own, and Mixin for storing common fields that can be re-used by multiple Pointables or Virtuals (eg. if you have multiple types that all have a name/description/body, they can share those and optionally the associated changesets and other logic).

Poliverso.org is an Italian instance (but considering that you are one of the most active users of Friendica, if you want to sign up, you are still welcome); in August it has become the Friendica instance with the most active users. It runs version 2024.03 and will remain on this version for a few weeks, since with our db it will take a whole day to migrate to the latest release.
Feddit.it is also an instance dedicated to an Italian audience and registrations are filtered to ensure that users are truly Italian. It runs version 0.19.5, which unfortunately could cause us to have big compatibility problems with the latest new version of Mastodon ๐คฌ
We have a lot of Friendica and Mastodon users who use it to participate in discussions and even to open new Threads.

In fact, Lemmy has some unique features (such as the intentionally limited management of crossposting) that cannot be managed.

This would allow mastodon users to continue using the Activity pub groups of other platforms, including Lemmy.
I remember in fact that even WordPress (which at the moment, represents the most important novelty of the Fediverse) is perfectly able to publish on the Lemmy communities and on the Friendica groups!
iirc mastodon was implementing smithereen's flavor of groups. no idea if they ended up changing course or anything (not following masto dev tok closely) but the way they work is fundamentally different from how Lemmy and compatible groups work

The impressions you reported are very similar to those I have had in these years of using aggregators.
The only difference is that I have never had the problems you had between Friendica and Lemmy. In fact, I tend to prefer using the Lemmy communities with my Friendica account
Since I am the administrator of three different instances (Mastodon Friendica and Lemmy) I have always been very careful to explore the potential and limitations in the interaction between these three platforms.
From Lemmy, for example, it is still impossible to publish on Friendica Groups (even if theoretically...๐๐ ), but Friendica manages Lemmy communities beautifully.
Maybe there is a problem with your Friendica instance
In my limited few days' experience, I've found Friendica and Diaspora are virtually seamless, but Friendica and Activity Pub is a bit more hit and miss. For example when I search for a particular Mastodon account so I can follow it from Friendica, often the first few times I search it only brings up Friendica accounts with similar names, and then I search again and suddenly it works and I can follow the Mastodon account. Still haven't figured that one out.

While itโs true that Mastodon usually integrates better than other software and I can see the pragmatic point for a newcomer user, probably this is because developers mainly check mastodon compatibility and not (or slower) with the rest of the software. And the mastocentricity of the Fediverse may be the responsible for that. Maybe if it was more software-diverse more of them would be compatible by default or more bound to a standard.
Probably you know that, but I donโt sense it in your articles (maybe itโs intentional) and I would like to know if you have an opinion on it.

I completely agree that sustainability is a critical and not easy topic. I would add also instance governance.
While choosing an instance with stable financial support seems a good criteria to me, centralizing the Fediverse into few big instances (and software) is dangerous in the long run.
First, it goes against the decentralized nature of the federation, gives more power to few people and is less resilient to attacks. Second, it dilutes the community feeling of the smaller instances and makes the โlocalโ and โfederatedโ timelines pretty useless. And they are one of the best features of our Fedi in my opinion!
In any case, Iโm not minimizing your argument and choosing the proper instance for each one is not easy.

naturalmente potrei anche linkarlo semplicemente ma tanto l'editor a blocchi tanto diversi temi wordpress spesso non vanno d'accordo con i frame. Una soluzione la troverรฒ ma รจ strano che si riceva l'errore descritto quando il plugin interno a wordpress gestisce tranquillamente i video di qualunque piattaforma.
Salve. Volevo sapere se ci sono novitร in argomento. Grazie al contributo di @filippodb ho fatto tentativi con video da altri server che ha avuto buon esito solo nel caso del server peertube.tv . Ciรฒ che vorrei evitare รจ la doppia pubblicazione tanto su YouTube che su Peertube.uno se questa dovesse rivelarsi inutile. Grazie.
@maudel @filippodb ciao, al momento non ne veniamo a capo, abbiamo controllato le opzioni e non capiamo perchรจ con il link non funziona, ma con l'iframe non ci sono problemi... su mastodon i video di peertube.uno funzionano, non รจ che per caso c'รจ qualche blocco nel tuo wordpress o forse devi impostare qualcosa per abilitare peertube.uno?
@filippodb grazie per l'interessamento. Purtroppo ho provato anche su altri siti che gestisco con il medesimo risultato. L'inserimento e/o l'icorporazione sono gestiti da un plugin interno a wordpress che non prevede sblocco o configurazione. Farรฒ altri tentativi e vi terrรฒ aggiornati. Dispiaciuto di non potere, almeno per il momento, sostituire PeerTube a YouTube. Un saluto.

In questo articolo ci sono parecchi dettagli e qualche soluzione wordpress.mediadoma.com/it/comโฆ Quella che ho adottato e che "sembra" funzionare รจ legata all'utilizzo del plugin "ARVE" di cui vi linko la pagina wordpress.org/plugins/advancedโฆ Ovviamente la soluzione piรน fluida sarebbe verificare la possibilitร di far aggiungere a WP peertube alle piattaforme supportate

si abbiamo testato lo streaming su peertube.uno e ora funziona perfetttamente! Funziona anche la possibilitร di salvare l'intera live nel proprio canale! Per ora a livello precauzionale c'รจ un limite massimo di 3 ore live e 2GB per ogni file salvato. Qual'รจ l'account da potenziare a 20GB?

@iusondemand come utente attivo di mastodon.uno puoi richiedere un account da 50GB con file video fino a 5GB. Se รจ un progetto formativo non ci sono problemi. Ovviamente consigliamo di non sperperare spazio e banda e di comprimere bene i file ;)

@at181903 ciao, sicuro che non preferisci un account su castopod.it che permette di raccogliere file audio? Usare peertube per file audio รจ uno spreco anche perchรจ ci sono piattaforme dedicata per l'audio molto bene fatte. Potresti creare un podcast audio sul cinema!

The descriptions on its Github page looks heavily AI generated. It uses a whole lot of words to say very few things.
Would benefit from having a few screenshots instead of walls of text.
Also, it is just a Lemmy client for now, so just call it one instead of โconnect to the fediverseโ.
