We publish a major Citizen Lab report on Webloc, an ad-based mass surveillance system that monitors the movements and personal characteristics of hundreds of millions people globally based on data obtained from mobile apps and digital advertising.
Customers include ICE, El Salvador and Hungary.
Our research shows that ad-based surveillance is now used by military, intelligence and law enforcement agencies down to local police in several countries.

Dal numero di automobili parcheggiate "a cazzo" per strada, e dal numero di bambinə che sono costrettə a percorrere i ben 700 metri di casa-scuola in automobile, deduco che 2,25 euro/litro di gasolio non è poi un problema per voi.

io per sicurezza dopo aver dovuto accendere il climatizzatore in auto, l'ultimo contatto visto che era vicino ed avevo tempo sono andato a vedermelo in bicicletta, con la scusa di ritorno sono passato a fare anche la spesa.
Potrò farlo solo per altri due giorni, prima di arrivare a temperature che mi impediscono di uscire in bici senza dovermi letteralmente strapparmi la pelle di dosso 🤣🤣
In autostrada le velocità sono diminuite però.

molte macchine vanno più lente del solito, considera che con il limitatore a 105, ne sorpasso ogni volta un po'. Inoltre anche i soliti inutili suvvoni coupé teutonici da 100mila quando ti sorpassano lo fanno in maniera molto più lenta. Rispetto al passato che mi facevano cappottare.
Poi può essere anche che andando piano ora vedo tutte queste situazioni, un po' come quando sei in bici e vedi i ciclisti sulle ciclabili, mentre in macchina sembrano vuote.
Poverino, allunghiamogli qualche soldino per comprare degli auricolari oppure un sistema per telefonare senza usare le mani. Avrà speso tutti i risparmi nell'acquisto del veicolo.

Delta Chat continua a costruire in silenzio quello che altri spesso promettono soltanto. Con le versioni 2.48+, il progetto raggiunge un traguardo significativo sulla privacy: un messaggio inviato rivela ai server di transito pochissimi metadati, avvicinandosi concretamente al cosiddetto “zero-metadata”.
Fino a questa versione, alcune intestazioni dei messaggi viaggiavano in chiaro, come quelle di threading e risposta. Ora anche queste sono cifrate nell’involucro interno, in conformità con l’RFC 9788 per la protezione completa degli header. I server di transito vedono solo l’indirizzo del destinatario, niente altro. In aggiunta, la data del messaggio viene randomizzata in una finestra di cinque giorni, rendendo molto più difficile la correlazione temporale per chi avesse accesso ai log dei server.
Cambia anche il protocollo SecureJoin, usato quando si scansiona un codice QR per avviare una chat verificata: tutti i messaggi iniziali sono ora cifrati, eliminando un’altra potenziale fuga di informazioni. E dopo mesi di attesa per dare tempo a tutti di aggiornarsi, è stato abilitato il supporto ai destinatari anonimi OpenPGP, eliminando dai messaggi qualsiasi riferimento alle chiavi crittografiche del destinatario.
Le chiamate audio e video su Android e iOS si comportano finalmente come vere telefonate di sistema: restano attive in background mentre si usa un’altra applicazione o si passa a un’altra chat. La tecnologia sottostante è WebRTC peer-to-peer con segnalazione via messaggi Delta Chat. La funzione è ancora nelle impostazioni sperimentali, ma il team indica che probabilmente non sarà più così nel prossimo rilascio.
Le chiamate in background arrivano anche su DeltaTouch, il client per Ubuntu Touch, che raggiunge così la parità con le versioni Android e iOS.
La novità forse più rilevante per resilienza e resistenza alla censura è la consegna multi-relay: ogni profilo può ora usare più server di inoltro contemporaneamente. Se uno viene bloccato o va offline, i messaggi passano automaticamente per un altro. È una risposta concreta al punto debole dei sistemi centralizzati come Signal, WhatsApp o Telegram, che in caso di blocco non offrono alcuna alternativa. Per attivarlo, bisogna aggiornare tutti i propri dispositivi alla versione 2.48 prima di abilitare la funzione nelle impostazioni avanzate.
Completano il rilascio le descrizioni cifrate per gruppi e canali, sincronizzate automaticamente con i nuovi membri, e la riproduzione in background dei messaggi vocali su desktop e Android.
Per chi vuole un sistema di messaggistica che non dipenda da un’azienda, non chieda il numero di telefono e funzioni anche sotto pressione, Delta Chat rimane una delle opzioni più serie disponibili.

The system obtains the data from everyday consumer apps installed on phones. The data is tied to mobile device IDs typically used for ad targeting, which identify a phone and its owner.
The systematic misuse of this data for tracking and profiling in digital marketing is already highly problematic. Misusing it for government surveillance is another level of disastrous.

He was also located based on Wi-Fi access points nearby his phone 110 times.
The activity graph on the right bottom indicates that the system tracked his location up to 12 times a day.
The code shown at the right top is the so-called 'Advertising ID' that identifies his mobile device.

The profile also lists “user segments” typically used in digital advertising, which can be much more sensitive than the ones shown here.

Location data can reveal a person's home, workplace, family, friends, habits, interests and more. Misusing it for government surveillance is highly problematic.
Another 2021 screen shows how Webloc displays location records in Street View, all of them possibly associated with a person who was frequently located in front of a certain house.

In the US, it is or was used by ICE, the US military, Texas Department of Public Safety, DHS West Virginia and several police departments in Los Angeles, Dallas, Baltimore, Tucson, Durham down to smaller cities/counties like City of Elk Grove and Pinal County.
Public records indicate that an even larger number of US federal, state and local agencies bought Tangles. Some of them might also use the Webloc add-on.

In Europe and the UK, we sent 96 freedom of information requests to law enforcement agencies in 14 countries and to 6 EU bodies. Many were rejected or received no response.
Some responses are interesting, including those from Europol, the UK Home Office and the Swedish Police Authority.
We believe that further research would also be fruitful with respect to potential Webloc purchases in Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Israel, Mexico, Vietnam and Singapore.

After receiving a tip from Amnesty Security Lab's @DonnchaC, we identified 219 active servers located in at least 21 countries that we consider to be associated with deployments of Tangles, Webloc or other products developed by Cobwebs Technologies.
Those servers are located in the US, UK, NL, DE, FR, SE, NO, IE, CY, AU, SP, MX, CO, SG, HK, ID, IN, IL, AE, IQ, KE, many of them hosted via MS Azure.
115 of them displayed a Tangles login page in the browser.

- Lynx, which helps facilitate undercover ops on the web and manage fake accounts
- Trapdoor, which appears to help trick people into revealing information. Our analysis leads us to believe that it can help facilitate the deployment of malware on devices

We discovered a Vietnamese requirements doc and servers located in Kenya and Indonesia that display Trapdoor login pages, which contain publicly available Javascript code for its admin interface.
The source code and the doc suggest that Trapdoor can help send phishing links that lead to fake web pages, which can open hidden tabs in the browser, extract passwords, access camera and microphone, and even deliver "files or payloads".
