And by the way, this is why I save most of my stuff in plain text files and my photos only on my hard disks... no cloud for me.

I closed my MS and Google accounts this year, after having signed up with a new account on German mailbox.org. It was not difficult to get my data out and move it. Of course I agree that US tech will try to lock in their users - they have about 50 years experience of doing just that - but if alternatives are provided, then people will start diffusing out.

in reply to Jesper Frickmann • • •I believe that the biggest hurdles right now are:
1. Buying new hardware w/o US tech giants baked in. It is still hard to buy a laptop with Linux preloaded or a phone w/o Apple or Google preloaded.
2. Ease of integration and setup. With Google, Apple or MS, you normally login once, and then everything (mostly) "just works". With my mailbox.org account, I had to setup email, CalDAV, CardDAV, and WebDAV for the cloud drive, separately.
3. The network effect. I have ordered a Jolla 2026 phone, but only because I have a work issued iPhone that I can use to Facetime my parents. They are in their mid 80s, my mother has dementia, but they know how to use an iPad or iPhone to Facetime and iMessage. I would never drag them through a search for alternative communication apps! Also, none of my real-life friends and relatives have left Facebook yet, even though I have encouraged them to try Friendica.
