Io sono un appassionato di linux e del software libero, potremmo dire un entusiasta. Continuerò a consigliarlo a tutti e ad aiutare gli amici ad installarlo quando vogliono provarlo o migliorare la loro vita digitale.

Ma, non per questo, vivo nel mondo delle fate.

Nel caso di questo articolo, mi trovo molto in disaccordo. A differenza di quanto è scritto nel titolo, ci sono pochi software di livello davvero professionale per l'elaborazione video su Linux: Da Vinci Resolve (ammesso di riuscire a farlo funzionare sulla propria distribuzione se NON è Centos o Rocky, dopo l'installazione) e Blender. Il secondo in realtà è più adatto a chi lavora con il 3D. Nel corpo dell'articolo si va un po' meglio, ma tra le righe si leggono dei limiti che purtroppo ha la soluzione proposta.

Poi ci sono tanti (ma tanti) software che vanno bene soltanto per uso casalingo, e ben venga che ci siano, e poi ci sono le vie di mezzo.

KDEnlive e Cinelerra secondo me sono 2 vie di mezzo, ma nell'articolo sembra che KDEnlive sia la soluzione di tutti i mali, e che il "comune sentire" (che sia difficile lavorare con i video su Linux), sia un errore.

(Inkscape non lo affronto neanche, è bello e completo ma le sue potenzialità sono quelle che aveva Adobe Illustrator 15 anni fa; ormai quel modo di lavorare è vecchio. In altre parole un professionista difficilmente lo userà).

Ecco il punto: nel 2025, per me, il punto non è "se" con una distribuzione linux si possa fare qualcosa, ma "in quanto tempo" e "con quale difficoltà".

Se gli sviluppatori non lavorano su questo, non credo che ci sarà mai una vera diffusione di Linux sul desktop.

Per citare un esempio, ormai anche il blocco note di Windows è pieno di IA, mentre Linux è rimasto indietro su questo fronte (e lo dico dopo l'installazione delle componenti di VOSK necessarie per trascrivere sottotitoli su KDEnlive).

Può piacere o no, ma io credo che l'IA sia qui per restare e per semplificarci la vita: ormai l'utente se la aspetta; non si può pretendere che gli utenti sacrifichino il loro tempo in nome di principi che, magari, neanche condividono.

Se ci fate caso, le soluzioni open che sono massicciamente sul mercato funzionano perché vanno meglio delle soluzioni chiuse per...uno scopo particolare, un esigenza. Sono abbastanza vecchio, ad esempio, per ricordare PERCHE' c'è stato un tempo in cui Firefox era IL browser: perché a differenza di Internet Explorer FUNZIONAVA.

Sarò cinico ma alla maggior parte delle perone non importano i principi, se c'è un modo per convincerle definitivamente è dar loro qualcosa di semplice e che funziona meglio dell'alternativa chiusa.

Mi spiace se urto la sensibilità di qualcuno, nel qual caso chiedo scusa. Questo però è il mio pensiero che non ha lo scopo di distruggere nulla, esprimo tutto ciò con malinconia per qualcosa che potrebbe essere ma non è.

Sta alla comunità cogliere il mio ragionamento con lo spirito che vuole avere: costruttivo.

Until the release of Windows 11, the upgrade proposition for Windows operating systems was rather straightforward: you considered whether the current version of Windows on your system still fulfilled your needs and if the answer was ‘no’, you’d buy an upgrade disc. Although system requirements slowly crept up over time, it was likely that your PC could still run the newest-and-greatest Windows version. Even Windows 7 had a graphical fallback mode, just in case your PC’s video card was a potato incapable of handling the GPU-accelerated Aero Glass UI.

This makes a lot of sense, as the most demanding software on a PC are the applications, not the OS. Yet with Windows 11 a new ‘hard’ requirement was added that would flip this on its head: the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a security feature that has been around for many years, but never saw much use outside of certain business and government applications. In addition to this, Windows 11 only officially supports a limited number of CPUs, which risks turning many still very capable PCs into expensive paperweights.

Although the TPM and CPU requirements can be circumvented with some effort, this is not supported by Microsoft and raises the specter of a wave of capable PCs being trashed when Windows 10 reaches EOL starting this year.

Not That Kind Of Trusted

Although ‘Trusted Platform’ and ‘security’ may sound like a positive thing for users, the opposite is really the case. The idea behind Trusted Computing (TC) is about consistent, verified behavior enforced by the hardware (and software). This means a computer system that’s not unlike a modern gaming console with a locked-down bootloader, with the TPM providing a unique key and secure means to validate that the hardware and software in the entire boot chain is the same as it was the last time. Effectively it’s an anti-tamper system in this use case that will just as happily lock out an intruder as the purported owner.

In the case of Windows 11, the TPM is used for this boot validation (Secure Boot), as well as storing the (highly controversial) Windows Hello’s biometric data and Bitlocker whole-disk encryption keys. Important to note here is that a TPM is not an essential feature for this kind of functionality, but rather a potentially more secure way to prevent tampering, while also making data recovery more complicated for the owner. This makes Trusted Computing effectively more a kind of Paranoid Computing, where the assumption is made that beyond the TPM you cannot trust anything about the hardware or software on the system until verified, with the user not being a part of the validation chain.

Theoretically, validating the boot process can help detect boot viruses, but this comes with a range of complications, not the least of which is that this would at most allow you to boot into Windows safe mode, if at all. You’d still need a virus scanner to detect and remove the infection, so using TPM-enforced Secure Boot does not help you here and can even complicate troubleshooting.

Outside of a corporate or government environment where highly sensitive data is handled, the benefits of a TPM are questionable, and there have been cases of Windows users who got locked out of their own data by Bitlocker failing to decrypt the drive, for whatever reason. Expect support calls from family members on Windows 11 to become trickier as a result, also because firmware TPM (fTPM) bugs can cause big system issues like persistent stuttering.

Breaking The Rules

As much as Microsoft keeps trying to ram^Wgently convince us consumers to follow its ‘hard’ requirements, there are always ways to get around these. After all, software is just software, and thus Windows 11 can be installed on unsupported CPUs without a TPM or even an ‘unsupported’ version 1.2 TPM. Similarly, the ‘online Microsoft account’ requirement can be dodged with a few skillful tweaks and commands. The real question here is whether it makes sense to jump through these hoops to install Windows 11 on that first generation AMD Ryzen or Intel Core 2 Duo system from a support perspective.

Fortunately, one does not have to worry about losing access to Microsoft customer support here, because we all know that us computer peasants do not get that included with our Windows Home or Pro license. The worry is more about Windows Updates, especially security updates and updates that may break the OS installation by using CPU instructions unsupported by the local hardware.

Although Microsoft published a list of Windows 11 CPU requirements, it’s not immediately obvious what they are based on. Clearly it’s not about actual missing CPU instructions, or you wouldn’t even be able to install and run the OS. The only true hard limit in Windows 11 (for now) appears to be the UEFI BIOS requirement, but dodging the TPM 2.0 & CPU requirements is as easy as a quick dive into the Windows Registry by adding the AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup. You still need a TPM 1.2 module in this case.

When you use a tool like Rufus to write the Windows 11 installer to a USB stick you can even toggle a few boxes to automatically have all of this done for you. This even includes the option to completely disable TPM as well as the Secure Boot and 8 GB of RAM requirements. Congratulations, your 4 GB RAM, TPM-less Core 2 Duo system now runs Windows 11.

Risk Management

It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will truly enforce the TPM and CPU requirements in the future, that is requiring Secure Boot with Bitlocker. Over on the Apple side of the fence, the hardware has been performing system drive encryption along with other ‘security’ features since the appearance of the Apple T2 chip. It might be that Microsoft envisions a similar future for PCs, one in which even something as sacrilegious as dual-booting another OS becomes impossible.

Naturally, this raises the spectre of increasing hostility between users and their computer systems. Can you truly trust that Bitlocker won’t suddenly decide that it doesn’t want to unlock the boot drive any more? What if an fTPM issue bricks the system, or that a sneaky Windows 11 update a few months or years from now prevents a 10th generation Intel CPU from running the OS without crashing due to missing instructions? Do you really trust Microsoft that far?

It does seem like there are only bad options if you want to stay in the Windows ecosystem.

Strategizing

Clearly, there are no good responses to what Microsoft is attempting here with its absolutely user-hostile actions that try to push a closed, ‘AI’-infused ecosystem on its victi^Wusers. As someone who uses Windows 10 on a daily basis, this came only after running Windows 7 for as long as application support remained in place, which was years after Windows 7 support officially ended.

Perhaps for Windows users, sticking to Windows 10 is the best strategy here, while pushing software and hardware developers to keep supporting it (and maybe Windows 7 again too…). Windows 11 came preinstalled on the system that I write this on, but I erased it with a Windows 10 installation and reused the same, BIOS embedded, license key. I also disabled fTPM in the BIOS to prevent ‘accidental upgrades’, as Microsoft was so fond of doing back with Windows 7 when everyone absolutely had to use Windows 10.

I can hear the ‘just use Linux/BSD/etc.’ crowd already clamoring in the comments, and will preface this by saying that although I use Linux and BSD on a nearly basis, I would not want to use it as my primary desktop system for too many reasons to go into here. I’m still holding out some hope for ReactOS hitting its stride Any Day Now, but it’s tough to see a path forward beyond running Windows 10 into the ground, while holding only faint hope for Windows 12 becoming Microsoft’s gigantic Mea Culpa.

After having used PCs and Windows since the Windows 3.x days, I can say that the situation for personal computers today is unprecedented, not unlike that for the World Wide Web. It seems increasingly less like customer demand is appealed to by companies, and more an inverse where customers have become merely consumers: receptacles for the AI and marketing-induced slop of the day, whose purchases serve to make stock investors happy because Line Goes Up^©.

A volte (ma poche volte) li vedo arrivare da bluesky, ma non è la regola, anzi.

Oggi, comunque, se sei un social e non hai profili fake non sei nessuno, quindi boh, dovrebbe essere buon segno? Mah!

Un esempio, qui sotto: profilo nati da due giorni e senza followers, ma che vuole seguire proprio te, senza nessuna interazione prima: naturalmente la sua lingua non è la tua e l'immagine è...beh, sempre di una bella gnocca (cosa azzeccatissima quando io sono il target, capirai...).

Siamo andati a cima di #Medeglia seguendo l'itinerario di gioia ad alta quota, perché pur essendo ad un quarto d'ora da casa mia, l'ultima volta che sono stata lì era forse alle elementari.
Vista spettacolare a 360° e un pezzo di storia che non ricordavo, le fortificazioni e trincee risalenti alla 1a guerra mondiale!

Nel "Giorno di Gerusalemme", mentre migliaia di israeliani celebravano l’occupazione dell’intera città avvenuta nel 1967 e sfilavano sventolando bandiere bianche e azzurre nella zona palestinese, il governo Netanyahu ha alzato il livello dello scontro diplomatico con l’Europa. Il ministro degli Affari strategici Ron Dermer, scriveva ieri Haaretz, ha lanciato un avvertimento diretto a Parigi e Londra: se riconoscerete lo Stato palestinese, Israele risponderà con l’annessione della Cisgiordania. Allo stesso modo, secondo Yisrael HaYom, ha fatto il ministro degli Esteri Gideon Saar inviando un messaggio simile alle controparti del Regno unito.

«Azioni unilaterali contro Israele saranno accolte con azioni unilaterali da parte di Israele», avrebbe minacciato Saar. Tel Aviv lancia così l’offensiva contro l’Europa, in vista del vertice previsto per il prossimo mese a New York, promosso da Francia e Arabia Saudita, dove il presidente francese Macron dovrebbe presentare la proposta di un riconoscimento coordinato dello Stato palestinese.

Riunito nel quartiere occupato di Silwan – nel sito archeologico della cosiddetta "Città di Davide", gestito interamente da un gruppo di coloni israeliani – il governo Netanyahu ha anche approvato una risoluzione per incentivare in vari modi il trasferimento delle ambasciate straniere a Gerusalemme.

Attualmente solo sei Paesi, tra cui gli Stati Uniti, hanno ambasciate nella città. Le Fiji si preparano ad aprirne una a settembre. Il resto del mondo non riconosce Gerusalemme come capitale di Israele.

Per il resto, il "Giorno di Gerusalemme" si è svolto secondo il solito copione. È stata l’abituale vetrina di suprematismo religioso, intimidazione verso i palestinesi e sfide alla legalità internazionale. Migliaia di manifestanti hanno lungamente scandito per le strade slogan come «Morte agli Arabi» e «Che il tuo villaggio possa bruciare». Quest’ultima invocazione è tristemente reale: ormai non passa notte in Cisgiordania senza che coloni israeliani assaltino villaggi e comunità palestinesi, incendiando case, automobili, frutteti e campi coltivati.

Giorni fa gli abitanti di Mughayer, o almeno una buona parte di essi, sono stati costretti a evacuare a causa di questi attacchi. Un’aggressione simile ha colpito ieri Khallet a Daba, nella zona ad alta tensione di Masafer Yatta (Hebron): 13 coloni, armati di bastoni e armi, hanno costretto due famiglie a fuggire. La nuova strategia dei settler consiste nel costruire avamposti a ridosso dei villaggi palestinesi più isolati, in modo da spingere i residenti a lasciare le loro terre. Nel sud di Israele sono scoppiate proteste contro la demolizione, iniziata la scorsa settimana, di 70 abitazioni beduine nel villaggio non riconosciuto dallo Stato di Qasr El Sir. La polizia ha arrestato due abitanti.

Star del "Giorno di Gerusalemme" anche quest’anno è stato il ministro della Sicurezza nazionale, Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader dell’estrema destra religiosa. Ieri all’alba si è presentato nel complesso della moschea di Al-Aqsa, guidando un’incursione di massa: oltre 1.400 estremisti hanno attraversato i cortili del terzo luogo sacro dell’Islam – per gli ebrei è il Monte del Tempio – issando la bandiera israeliana e recitando preghiere, in violazione dello status quo delle moschee. «Sono venuto a pregare per la vittoria nella guerra a Gaza», ha dichiarato Ben-Gvir, filmato mentre sventolava bandiere e distribuiva adesivi con lo slogan «Gaza è nostra per sempre». Al raid hanno partecipato anche il ministro del Negev e della Galilea Yitzhak Wasserlauf e i parlamentari Amit Halevi e Zvi Succot. Quest’ultimo, sventolando la bandiera israeliana, ha proclamato: «Il Monte del Tempio è ora nelle nostre mani».

Oltre alle bandiere di Israele, molti hanno issato vessilli con la scritta «Terzo Tempio», per sollecitare la costruzione di un nuovo tempio ebraico sulla Spianata. «Quella che gli arabi – i palestinesi, ndr – chiamano Al Aqsa non è altro che una parte dell’area dove sorgeva fino a duemila anni fa il nostro tempio. È venuto il momento di ricostruirlo, senza indugio», ci ha detto Yedidia Gabai, un manifestante giunto da una colonia in Cisgiordania. Intorno a lui decine di giovani danzato e urlato slogan tutto il tempo.

In quelle stesse ore, la deputata di destra Yulia Malinovsky ha simbolicamente occupato il quartier generale dell’Unrwa a Gerusalemme Est – l’agenzia che assiste i profughi palestinesi – trasformandolo nel suo "ufficio parlamentare".

Nel cuore della Gerusalemme vecchia, con i negozi tutti chiusi e gli abitanti palestinesi rintanati nelle case per evitare il peggio, la tensione è rimasta alta tutto il giorno. La polizia israeliana ha arrestato un palestinese che aveva difeso un commerciante dall’aggressione di giovani estremisti. L’uomo è stato picchiato dagli agenti, mentre gli aggressori si sono allontanati senza conseguenze. Sulla scena, i volontari del movimento arabo-ebraico «Standing Together», con i loro gilet viola, hanno tentato invano di impedire altre aggressioni. Loro stessi, insieme ad altri attivisti israeliani di sinistra, sono stati bersaglio di insulti e provocazioni da parte dei partecipanti alla «Marcia delle Bandiere». Arrivando alla Porta di Damasco della città vecchia, Danny Levy, capo della polizia, ha minimizzato l’accaduto. «Non abbiamo arrestato nessuno, solo qualche fermo tra gruppetti isolati», ha detto, aggiungendo di non aver sentito alcuno slogan anti-arabo. «Sapete, non sento bene, sono stato un artigliere nell’esercito», ha commentato sorridendo. Levy non ha neanche visto i fanatici del gruppo Im Tirzu esporre striscioni con le scritte «Nessuna vittoria senza Nakba» e «1967 – Gerusalemme nelle nostre mani, 2025 – Gaza nelle nostre mani».

A chiusura del «Giorno di Gerusalemme», è intervenuto anche l’altro leader della destra religiosa, il ministro delle Finanze Bezalel Smotrich. «Abbiamo paura della vittoria? Abbiamo forse paura della parola occupazione?», ha domandato Smotrich alla folla. Quindi ha insistito: «Stiamo forse colonizzando la Terra d’Israele? No, noi stiamo liberando Gaza. Stiamo trionfando sul nemico».

Preface

I WAS A VICTIM OF OPERATION CONDOR and the one who discovered its secret archives in Asunción, Paraguay, in December 1992.
During the night of November 29, 1974, I was abducted by the political police of the dictator Afredo Stroessner and taken directly before a military tribunal in Paraguay made up of the military attachés of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and Uruguay, also with the presence of Paraguayan civil and military authorities.
A Chilean officer questioned me about my supposed link with Chilean university people because I had taken a course in the sociology of education at Catholic University. The police chief of the province of Córdoba, Argentina, wanted to know of my links to the “subversives” of the University of La Plata, where I had graduated with a doctorate in the science of education.
The interrogation lasted thirty days, with terrible tortures. Finally, they categorized my crime as “intellectual terrorism”: for the so-called subversive content of my doctoral thesis; for having promoted the campaign “A Roof of Your Own” for each Paraguayan educator in my capacity as a unionist fighting in the national teachers association; and for having put into practice the methods of Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed in the Juan B. Alberdi Institute, where I was director.
My wife, the educator Celestina Pérez, died as a consequence of the psychological tortures to which she was subjected, being forced to listen on the telephone, systematically for ten days, to my cries and screams from the torture chamber. On the tenth day, at midnight, she received a call announcing my death, with someone asking her “to come to retrieve the cadaver of the subversive educator.” The call provoked a heart attack, and she died of pain.
I was transferred among various police stations for “bad conduct,” eventually ending up at the concentration camp called Emboscada. In Police Station No. 1, the headquarters of INTERPOL, I learned of the existence of Operation Condor for the first time, seven months before the intelligence conference promoted by the Chileans Augusto Pinochet and Manuel Contreras in Santiago in November 1975. My informant was a police officer who was imprisoned with us for not having denounced his son, also a student at the University of La Plata, who had been a member of the rebellious Centro de Estudiantes (Student Center). This policeman became aware of Plan Condor because he worked in the telecommunications office of the police.
In my prison in Police Station No. 3, “Tomb of the Living,” I shared a cell with the Argentine Amilcar Latino Santucho, who told me that he and Jorge Fuentes Alarcón, a Chilean leader of MIR (Movimiento de la Izquierda Revolucionaria, Movement of the Revolutionary Left of Chile) also had been taken before a military tribunal composed of military attachés of the Southern Cone countries of South America.
In September 1976, I was transferred to the concentration camp Emboscada, where I met the Paraguayan doctor Gladys M. De Sannemann, who told me that she was a victim of Operation Condor. She was abducted by the Paraguayan police in Argentine territory, in Misiones, Posadas.
After completing three years of prison I began a hunger strike, which lasted for thirty days, and thanks to the urgent action campaign by Amnesty International, I recovered my freedom in September 1977.
I went into exile in Panama. There, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, contracted me to be a consultant of UNESCO for Latin America, a position I held from 1978 to 1992.
For almost fifteen years, I carried out an investigative project on Operation Condor, based on the testimonies of my prison companions and on the Revista Policial Paraguaya (Paraguayan Police Magazine).
For these reasons, I value the research investigation on Operation Condor, Predatory States, realized by J. Patrice McSherry. She presents the U.S. and Latin American scenario in which this criminal pact developed and shows us how the Southern Cone countries were strongly politicized, with the rise of social mobilization after the triumph of the Cuban revolution. Professor McSherry also portrays the energetic response of the United States via the Pentagon, the CIA, and other security agencies, especially under the charge of National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the 1970s. “No more Cubas” was the official policy underlying Washington’s unconditional support for the military coup against the constitutional government of Salvador Allende in Chile on September 11, 1973.
This book is a serious historical work with abundant documentation.
Professor McSherry shows us the dynamics of Operation Condor, with the interchange of intelligence information among the member states, the targeting of the “subversive” or “terrorist” element, and the torture, execution, or transfer of the subversives to any other signatory country. She also sheds light on the consequences of U.S. military intervention in the region: the era of state terrorism; the reduction of spaces for democratic participation; the physical elimination of militants and leaders of revolutionary movements; the control of civil society; and the disarticulation of political society.
Using documents declassified by the U.S. State Department, the author points out that U.S. officials regarded Operation Condor as a legitimate counterinsurgency organization. She shows that the state terrorists of Condor counted on Washington for technical assistance in torture, for financing, and even for a system of telecommunications.
Thanks to this important work of historical investigation, we learn of the magnitude of the violations of human rights committed in this epoch against Latin American societies that had aspirations for freedom. Another important element of Professor McSherry’s analysis is the contribution of French military officers, based on their counter-revolutionary experience in Algeria as well as Vietnam, to the training of U.S. soldiers in torture and other grave violations of human rights. This occurred under the administration of President John F. Kennedy.
Shortly before the publication of Predatory States, Paraguay established, through a law passed by Congress (Law 2225 of 2004), the Commission of Truth and Justice, to investigate enforced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, torture and other serious abuses, involuntary exile, and other grave violations of human rights. I am sure that Professor McSherry’s work will bring valuable clues to the Commission of Truth and Justice for the clarification of so many crimes against humanity.
Recovering the past is a significant undertaking, indispensable for countering the impunity that continues to reign and for ensuring that justice is made effective in the face of the appalling violations of human rights committed in the decade of the 1970s. The importance of not forgetting what happened has nothing to do with a thirst for revenge. On the contrary, the act of remembering serves the need to keep historical memory alive and allows us to analyze, with some distance, how an organized and deliberate plan existed to do the greatest possible harm to defenseless Latin American societies. In fact, Professor McSherry demonstrates that there was such a plan, systematic, organized, and planned in order to prepare the ground for the critical economic and political situation in which we find ourselves today, with the imposition of neoliberalism, political domination, and an unpayable external debt.
Predatory States is a genuine scientific addition to the clarification of a history that never should have befallen Latin America and an invaluable contribution to the culture of peace.
