Oil-Based Sprengel Pump Really Sucks
Have you heard of the Sprengel pump? It’s how they drew hard vacuum back before mechanical pumps were perfected — the first light bulbs had their vacuums drawn with Sprengel pumps, for example. It worked by using droplets of a particular liquid to catch air particles, and push them out a narrow tube, thereby slowly evacuating a chamber. The catch is that that liquid used to be mercury, which isn’t something many of us have on hand in kilogram quantities anymore. [Gabriel Wolffe] had the brainwave that one might substitute modern vacuum pump oil for mercury, and built a pump to test that idea.
Even better, unlike the last (mercury-based) Sprengel pump we saw, [Gabriel] set up his build so that no glassblowing is required. Yes, yes, scientific glassblowing used to be an essential skill taught in every technical college in the world. Nowadays, we’re glad to have a design that lets us solder brass fittings together. Technically you still have to cut an eyedropper, but that’s as complex as the glasswork gets. Being able to circulate oil with a plastic tube and peristaltic pump is great, too.
If you try it, you need to spring for vacuum pump oil. This type of pump is limited in the vacuum it can draw by the vapor pressure of the fluid in use, and just any oil won’t do. Most have vapor pressures far in excess of anything useful. In the old days, only mercury would cut it, but modern chemistry has come up with very stable oils that will do nearly as well.
How well? [Gabriel] isn’t sure; he bottomed out his gauge at 30 inches of Mercury (102 kPa). It may not be any lower than that, but it’s fair to say the pump draws a healthy vacuum without any unhealthy liquid metals. Enough to brew up some tubes, perhaps.

Piratenpartei macht Vorschlag zur Altersverifikation – datensparsamer und einfacher als mit der E-ID
Die Piratenpartei ist beim W3C (World Wide Web Consortium, – dem internationalen Gremium zur Standardisierung von Web-Technologien) mit einem besonders datensparsamen Vorschlag zur Altersverifikation im Internet vorgestellig geworden. Das Verfahren arbeitet dezentral und lokal auf dem Gerät des Nutzers. Dadurch werden keinerlei persönliche Daten an den Betreiber einer Webseite übermittelt, während dieser zugleich vom Aufwand einer aufwendigen Altersprüfung entlastet wird.
Unser Konzept sieht vor, dass im Header des Webseiten-Quelltexts oder in App-Protokollen vermerkt wird, ob eine Altersverifikation erforderlich ist. Browser und Apps prüfen diese Angabe standardmässig und erkennen, ob ein Nutzer die zuvor festgelegte Altersfreigabe erfüllt. Diese Lösung lässt sich auch gerätebasiert umsetzen.

Die Lösung der Piratenpartei unterstreicht ihre führende Expertise an der Schnittstelle von Digitalisierung und Politik. Anstatt sich wie andere allein auf die E-ID als vermeintlich unverzichtbare Lösung für die Altersverifikation im Internet zu fixieren, bietet dieses Konzept eine deutlich einfachere, datensparsame und die Privatsphäre wahrende Alternative. Nutzer benötigen keine E-ID und müssen sich nicht auf jeder Webseite ausweisen. Webseitenbetreiber profitieren von minimalem Aufwand, da eine einzige Zeile Code ausreicht. Durch eine Integration beim W3C werden Browserhersteller nahtlos in die Umsetzung eingebunden, was diesen Vorschlag für alle Beteiligten attraktiv und zukunftsweisend macht.
Jorgo Ananiadis, Präsident der Piratenpartei Schweiz: „Die Piraten haben diese Idee bereits im Rahmen des Referendums gegen den Ausweiszwang im Internet vorgeschlagen. Umso mehr stellt sich die Frage, warum sie bislang niemand aufgegriffen hat. Unsere Lösung ist schlicht besser als jede Altersverifikation mit einer E-ID.“
Renato Sigg, Vorstand Piratenpartei Zürich: „Diese Lösung respektiert unsere liberale Gesellschaft und gibt Eltern gleichzeitig die nötigen Mittel zur Hand, um das Kindeswohl zu schützen. Sie ist eine deutlich datensparsamere und weniger aufwändige Variante einer Alterskontrolle als die E-ID.“

Das W3C arbeitet an einem einfachen Standard, mit dem jede Website im HTML-Header angeben kann, ob sie altersbeschränkte Inhalte enthält. Dies kann über ein simples Meta-Tag geschehen, das Kurzcodes wie p (Pornografie), v (Gewalt), n (keine Beschränkung) und weitere verwendet.
Auf Nutzerseite ist beispielsweise die Jugendschutzfunktion direkt im Browser integriert. Enthält eine Website eingeschränkte Inhalte, wird blokiert oder vor dem Zugriff ein Passwort abgefragt.
Entscheidend ist, dass dieser Vorgang lokal abläuft: Es werden keine persönlichen Daten an Websites übermittelt und es braucht keine zentrale Behörde. Die volle Kontrolle bleibt beim Nutzer.
Für Browserhersteller bedeutet dies lediglich eine kleine zusätzliche Funktionalität – der Aufwand bleibt überschaubar. Auch der Gesetzgeber könnte anstelle einer verpflichtenden Altersverifikation vorschreiben, dass Anbieter eine solche Kategorisierung im Header einfügen.

Es gibt bereits einen Tag „Restricted to adults“ (RTA), aber erstens definiert dieser nur, dass die Website für Kinder gesperrt ist, ohne eine detaillierte Kategorie wie Glücksspiel, Pornografie oder Gewalt anzugeben. Zweitens wird dieser Tag hauptsächlich von Kinderschutzsoftware oder Suchmaschinen von Drittanbietern verwendet, um ihre SafeSearch-Funktion zu filtern. Drittens ist „<meta name=“RATING“ content=“RTA-5042-1996-1400-1577-RTA“ />“ viel länger als nötig.
Ebenfalls gibt es meta-tags mit adult oder family_friendly, die aber auch nur von Suchmaschinen verwendet werden.
Der grosse Unterschied zu den bestehenden Systemen ist, dass in diesem Vorschlag einerseits die Kategorien feingranularer und multidimensional sind, andererseits die Umsetzung standardmässig im Browser oder Gerät sichergestellt wird.

Bene, benissimo. Anzi no, malissimo: adesso possiamo affermare che Papa Leone XIV ha gettato definitivamente la maschera. Anche se ormai era evidente, visto il suo comportamento su quello che sta combinando israele.
Leggete con attenzione cosa ha appena detto:
"La Nato non ha cominciato nessuna guerra, i polacchi sono preoccupati perché si sentono che il loro spazio è stato invaso, è una situazione molto tesa".
Questo parla senza sapere, o sapendolo benissimo, che la storia dei droni russi in Polonia è una storia totalmente priva di prove e propagandistica.
Però il punto secondo me sta da un'altra parte, ed è sostanzialmente quello che hanno fatto Biden, Ursula, Trump, Rutte, Stoltenberg, Meloni e company: descrivere la Nato in luce positiva. Come la vittima. Come l'aggredito. Come quella che non c'entra assolutamente nulla. Gravissimo. E anche vergognoso!
Papa Francesco parlava di Nato che abbaiava alle porte della Russia. Questo benedice e assolve erga omnes la Nato, che è l'organizzazione più pericolosa, criminale e guerrafondaia mai esistita.
Dopo l'accoglienza riservata a Herzog in Vaticano, direi che tutti i pezzi del puzzle sono andati al loro posto.

The Practicality Of Solar Powered Meshtastic
A Meshtastic node has been one of the toys of the moment over the last year, and since they are popular with radio amateurs there’s a chance you’ll already live within range of at least one. They can typically run from a lithium-ion or li-po battery, so it’s probable that like us you’ve toyed with the idea of running one from a solar panel. It’s something we have in common with [saveitforparts], whose experiments with a range of different solar panels form the subject of a recent video.
He has three different models: one based around a commercial solar charger, another using an off-the-shelf panel, and a final one using the panel from a solar garden light. As expected the garden light panel can’t keep an ESP32 with a radio going all day, but the other two manage even in the relatively northern climes of Alaska.
As a final stunt he puts one of the nodes out on a rocky piece of the southern Alaskan coastline, for any passing hacker to find. It’s fairly obviously in a remote place, but it seems passing cruise ships will be within its range. We just know someone will take up his challenge and find it.

Google cambia la strategia Android: basta patch mensili, solo fix basate sul rischio
Google ha modificato la sua strategia di aggiornamento della sicurezza Android, interrompendo per la prima volta in un decennio la sua tradizione di divulgare mensilmente le vulnerabilità. Nel bollettino di luglio 2025, l’azienda non ha segnalato una singola vulnerabilità, per la prima volta in 120 pubblicazioni. Ma a settembre, l’elenco includeva 119 correzioni contemporaneamente.
Il motivo non è che luglio fosse “sicuro”, ma che Google sta passando a un nuovo modello di sistema di aggiornamento basato sul rischio (RBUS). Ora, gli aggiornamenti mensili conterranno solo correzioni per le vulnerabilità “ad alto rischio”, ovvero quelle attivamente sfruttate o che fanno parte di catene di attacco note. Le vulnerabilità rimanenti saranno raggruppate in importanti rilasci trimestrali: a marzo, giugno, settembre e dicembre.
L’azienda sottolinea che questo approccio semplificherà il lavoro dei produttori di smartphone. Dovranno integrare meno patch negli aggiornamenti mensili, il che aumenterà la probabilità di una loro pubblicazione tempestiva. Allo stesso tempo, i produttori potranno concentrarsi su aggiornamenti trimestrali più consistenti, che diventeranno il canale principale per la distribuzione della maggior parte delle correzioni.
Google sottolinea che in precedenza molte aziende limitavano gli aggiornamenti di sicurezza a una cadenza bimestrale o trimestrale, soprattutto per i modelli più economici. La nuova programmazione dovrebbe contribuire a uniformare la distribuzione e garantire che i dispositivi siano protetti almeno trimestralmente.
Il ciclo tradizionale di gestione delle vulnerabilità rimane lo stesso. I ricercatori segnalano i problemi scoperti, Google li conferma e assegna loro degli identificatori CVE. Gli ingegneri sviluppano quindi una soluzione e, se la vulnerabilità è critica e interessa componenti di Project Mainline, l’aggiornamento può essere distribuito direttamente tramite Google Play System Update.
L’Android Security Bulletin, disponibile sia in versione pubblica che in versione chiusa, rimane un elemento chiave. Il bollettino chiuso viene inviato ai fornitori 30 giorni prima della pubblicazione per dare loro il tempo di testare le patch. Questo periodo sarà ora più lungo per le release trimestrali, sollevando preoccupazioni tra gli sviluppatori di terze parti.
Pertanto, i rappresentanti di GrapheneOS avvertono: più lungo è l’intervallo tra distribuzione e pubblicazione, maggiore è il rischio di fuga di informazioni su vulnerabilità che possono essere sfruttate da aggressori. Anche se per ora questa rimane una minaccia ipotetica.
Un altro svantaggio del nuovo processo è che il codice sorgente delle patch viene ora pubblicato solo per gli aggiornamenti trimestrali. Questo complica ulteriormente le cose per la community delle ROM personalizzate, che non sarà più in grado di includere tempestivamente le patch mensili.
Nonostante i cambiamenti, Google assicura che gli utenti i cui dispositivi ricevono già aggiornamenti mensili continueranno a riceverli. Per altri, il passaggio a RBUS dovrebbe migliorare la prevedibilità e la frequenza degli aggiornamenti. “Android e Pixel risolvono le vulnerabilità mensilmente, ma diamo sempre priorità a quelle più rischiose”, ha dichiarato un portavoce dell’azienda.

ChatGPT Will Guess Your Age and Might Require ID for Age Verification
OpenAI has announced it is introducing new safety measures for ChatGPT after the a wave of stories and lawsuits accusing ChatGPT and other chatbots of playing a role in a number of teen suicide cases. ChatGPT will now attempt to guess a user’s age, and in some cases might require users to share an ID in order to verify that they are at least 18 years old.“We know this is a privacy compromise for adults but believe it is a worthy tradeoff,” the company said in its announcement.
“I don't expect that everyone will agree with these tradeoffs, but given the conflict it is important to explain our decisionmaking,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on X.
In August, OpenAI was sued by the parents of Adam Raine, who died by suicide in April. The lawsuit alleges that alleges that the ChatGPT helped him write the first draft of his suicide note, suggested improvements on his methods, ignored early attempts and self-harm, and urged him not to talk to adults about what he was going through.
“Where a trusted human may have responded with concern and encouraged him to get professional help, ChatGPT pulled Adam deeper into a dark and hopeless place by assuring him that ‘many people who struggle with anxiety or intrusive thoughts find solace in imagining an ‘escape hatch’ because it can feel like a way to regain control.’”
In August the Wall Street Journal also reported a story about a 56-year-old man who committed a murder-suicide after ChatGPT indulgedhis paranoia. Today, the Washington Postreported another story about another lawsuit alleging that a Character AI chatbot contributed to a 13-year-old girl’s death by suicide.
OpenAI introduced parental controls to ChatGPT earlier in September, but has now introduced new, more strict and invasive security measures.
In addition to attempting to guess or verify a user’s age, ChatGPT will now also apply different rules to teens who are using the chatbot.
“For example, ChatGPT will be trained not to do the above-mentioned flirtatious talk if asked, or engage in discussions about suicide of self-harm even in a creative writing setting,” the announcement said. “And, if an under-18 user is having suicidal ideation, we will attempt to contact the users’ parents and if unable, will contact the authorities in case of imminent harm.”
OpenAI’s post explains that it is struggling to manage an inherent problem with large language models that 404 Media has tracked for several years. ChatGPT used to be a far more restricted chatbot that would refuse to engage users on a wide variety of issues the company deemed dangerous or inappropriate. Competition from other models, especially locally hosted and so-called “uncensored” models, and a political shift to the right which sees many forms of content moderation as censorship, has caused OpenAI to loosen those restrictions.
“We want users to be able to use our tools in the way that they want, within very broad bounds of safety,” Open AI said in its announcement. The position it seemed to have landed on given these recent stories about teen suicide, is that it wants to “‘Treat our adult users like adults’ is how we talk about this internally, extending freedom as far as possible without causing harm or undermining anyone else’s freedom.
OpenAI is not the first company that’s attempting to use machine learning to predict the age of its users. In July, YouTube announced it will use a similar method to “protect” teens from certain types of content on its platform.

Some international sellers on large platforms like eBay and Etsy have jacked up their shipping costs to the United States to absurd prices in order to deter Americans from buying their products in an effort to avoid dealing with the logistical headaches of Trump's tariffs.A Japanese eBay seller increased the shipping cost on a $319 Olympus camera lens to $2,000 for U.S. buyers, for example. The shipping price from Japan to the United Kingdom, Italy, Ireland, Costa Rica, Canada, and other countries I checked is $29, meanwhile. The seller, Ninjacamera.Japan, recently updated their shipping prices to the United States to all be $2,000 for dozens of products that don't weigh very much and whose prices are mostly less than $800. That price used to be the threshold for the de minimis tariff exemption, a rule that previously allowed people to buy things without paying tariffs on lower-priced goods. As many hobbyists have recently discovered, the end of de minimis has made things more expensive and harder to come by.
eBay does allow sellers to opt out of selling to the United States entirely, but some sellers have found it easier to modify existing listings to have absurd shipping prices for the United States only rather than deal with taking entire listings down and delisting them to restrict American buyers entirely.
I found numerous listings from a handful of different sellers who, rather than say they won't ship to the United States, have simply jacked up their shipping costs to absurd levels for the United States only. There are $575 cameras that the seller is now charging $500 to ship to the United States but will mail for free anywhere else in the world. Another Japanese seller is charging $640 to mail to the United States but will ship for free to other countries. A seller in Kazakhstan is charging $35 to mail a camera internationally but $999 to send to the United States. A German yarn seller is charging $10.50 to ship to Canada, but $500 to ship to the United States. On Reddit, users are reporting the same phenomenon occurring with some sellers on Etsy as well (it is harder to search Etsy by shipping prices, so I couldn’t find too many examples of this).What is happening here, of course, is that some sellers in other countries don't want to have to deal with Trump's tariffs and the complicated logistics they have created for both buyers and sellers. Many international shipping companies have entirely stopped shipping to the United States, and many international sellers don't want to have to deal with the hassle of changing whatever shipping service they normally use to accommodate American buyers. eBay has also warned sellers that they may get negative feedback from American buyers who do not understand how tariffs work. eBay's feedback system is very important, and just a few negative reviews can impact a seller's standing on the platform and make it less likely that buyers will purchase something from them.
None of this is terribly surprising, but as an American, it feels actually more painful to see a listing for a product I might want that costs $2,000 for shipping rather than have the listings be invisible to me altogether.

RICORSO STRAORDINARIO CONTRO LA MADRE DI TUTTE LE ORDINANZE
Per l'impatto dell'ordinanza commissariale n. 24/2025, le realtà dell'Unione dei Comitati contro l'inceneritore insieme a Zero Waste e VAS, hanno fatto ricorso straordinario al Presidente della Repubblica.
Ieri abbiamo pertanto impugnato "la madre di tutte le ordinanze" perché con essa il 9 maggio Gualtieri ha dichiarato la pubblica utilità del mega impianto. Con questa ordinanza, ha approvato l'aggiudicazione fatta da Roma Capitale, disposto la presa d'atto della concessione e del diritto di superficie in favore di Renew Rome (la cordata guidata da Acea) prevedendo le famigerate operazioni di cantierizzazione che hanno portato alla devastazione di tutta la vegetazione ripariale del fosso della Cancelliera.
L'ordinanza è una lunghissima sequela di vizi di legittimità puntualmente indicati nel ricorso per il quale ci siamo affidati ancora una volta alla straordinaria professionalità di Giuseppe Libutti che, per questo giudizio, lavorerà con il collega Benedetto Cimino. Presto o tardi avremo giustizia. Santa Palomba non si piega.
