trying to use the STM32 I2C bootloader feels like offensive exploitation, despite its only purpose being to literally run arbitrary code

STM doesn't tell you where the boundaries of I2C packets lie (and they have to be in very specific places) [edit: they tell you this in one place in the datasheet & then mislead you in a bunch of others]
describing the first byte of an I2C transaction as "Byte 3" is a completely deranged way to communicate [edit: ACK is also a byte]

this bootloader absolutely requires clock stretching, but on top of that it requires you observe the timings from this cursed table
if you can, avoid STM32 I2C bootloader at any cost. it is terrible

I2C was a mistake. Making a microcontroller pretend to be an I2C peripheral was an even bigger mistake.
sometimes the piece of shit just hangs. i thought maybe it doesn't like how fast i'm going. nope, switched to 100 kHz f_scl, added a bunch of delays between every byte, still hangs until a very long (multiple seconds) timeout

This looks like a seriously maddening problem. Why did you decide to go with the MCU vs the FPGA given your presumed familiarity with it?
If the person who wrote the table is accustomed to Intel way of working, he assumes those stretch factors are for default crystal value indicated in each MCU datasheet, min.-max. are only for information not cared about and not tested.
(I had a answer form Intel in the past, where I should only care on value indicated in the application schematic, because it's what they had working on board, all the rest (text, tables, ..) are only fluff to make other department happy.

If it's any consolation, Patrick Breyer's report on Chat Control <patrick-breyer.de/en/posts/cha…> says services that are neither paid nor funded by advertising are out of scope. That excludes the Fediverse (aside from Threads and Truth Social), Linux, Tor, and most other free-and-open-source things.
Whether this will remain true in future negotiations, I don't know, but Dr Breyer has been quiet <digitalcourage.social/@echo_pb…> and he probably would've sounded the alarm if the exemption was in danger.

tbh a barrier on entry is almost always good these days.

If you measure "complexity" by how many choices you have to make, the WSocial one is clearly simpler.
Stressed out minds don't like to make choices. It requires effort and they're spending it all dealing with stress.
If you have a mind for conspiracy, and I do, you'll see strategy in this.
I'd say that the hard thing about choosing a server is that it's a subjective decision.
Also, it's not the number of steps, but whether they are clear and work well enough (I imagine the verification on W will have problems on that front, aside from the dystopian ones, I mean).
On the other hand, when I was trying to join the fediverse, my first several choices didn't pan out for different reasons: registrations were closed; login didn't work; submission not accepted (I assume); didn't really fit with the instance where login worked. Finally someone on twitter mentioned the current one.

not to speculate too wildly, but the endpoint of this current trajectory looks very bleak, when you connect up the sort of thing with the bizarre ongoing insistence that the tech sector can now deliver "intelligence too cheap to meter", by which I'm guessing they mean the tech bosses would love to eliminate what we think of as "personal computing" altogether. that would explain why they're so hot to proclaim that the era of the computer programmer is over. the masses are to be confined to using single-function answerboxes and usage of general-purpose computers will increasingly be associated with criminality.

Thinking about all these repeated attempts to strip away privacy to make it easier for cops to catch bad guys.
And honestly, I get their point. Figuring out who dun the crime is really hard, there's a reason TV detectives are admired as such super-smart people.
But... I think it was Pratchett who wrote in one of his books that if it were up to the police, everybody in a city would be required to sit still in the open with their hands visible, to make their jobs easier. It would certainly reduce crime!
But the only reason they're asking for this, specifically, is because people don't really understand what strong encryption is really for. If they were to ask for similar access to our physical lives, the push-back would be much, much stronger.

I really don't understand why people get so mad about pronouns. Sure, the user base can be a bit smug, and not everyone needs, or can afford them, but if you use language a lot the upgrade is definitely worth it. Proverbs are also great (and I think they're planning on releasing pro versions of more word classes soon) although that's mostly because anything is better than getting your verbs interrupted by ads, and I'd rather speak pirate if that was my only other option.
Of course, you get even more flexibility for free with an open source conlang - it's nowhere near as hard as people say (you don't need to compile anything to Chomsky Universal Grammar yourself anymore, unless for some reason you want to), and you won't have to change your workflow much unless you do something crazy like jump straight into a minimalist Pirahã based distro, or commit to hours of debugging aethyrs whenever the latest channelling broke something just so you can comment "I use Enochian btw" everywhere (I use Enochian btw).
The support for language games is also much better now than it used to be, particularly after Wittgenstein was open sourced in 2022, although there can still be compatibility issues with utterances made in proprietary language (not to be confused with private language, which was thing used by IBM back in the day, for single-user systems with no networking support, and definitely not Wittgenstein compliant).
As for the security benefits, a lot of it really comes down to using a separate "subject of enunciation" for low-level access and administrative tasks. Of course, imperative mode escalation ("Voice of Command", "7th Function") attacks are still possible, but under normal circumstances they're really more of a theoretical curiosity than anything you need to worry about, unless you plan on getting on the bad side of entities like the NSA or Académie Française (In which case; Solution: Magical amulets? Fake your own death, move into a submarine? You're still gonna get Académie Française'd upon).
Most users will be perfectly safe as long as they keep their True Name - i.e. the first-person declension of their root morpheme - secret, and don't incorporate any suspicious, pseudo-linguistic nonsense from anonymous blog comments into their world model (and even then, you're far more likely to get bricked by a basilisk than Snow Crashed in the colloquial sense of taken over and remotely controlled by an attacker).
Also, and I know this is a meme and hopefully nothing anyone takes seriously, but: if you're running anything English based, DO NOT remove French "to save space" ("to spare room"?) - it will break all kinds of critical dependencies, 1066 and all that.

Gli utenti Mastodon infatti hanno molti limiti di visualizzazione, ma sono pur sempre la comunità più grande del Fediverso e perciò è importante che vedano correttamente i vostri post: poter contare sulla loro visibilità è un'opportunità per aggiungere ulteriori possibilità di interazioni con altre persone.

Il vantaggio è che con Friendica per questa impostazione che puoi attivare per rendere tutto più visibile, mentre gli sviluppatori di Lemmy hanno il dente avvelenato con quelli di Mastodon e quindi non implementeranno mai un'opzione del genere 🤣

fino ad ora il prezzo è stato basato unicamente sullo spazio utilizzato, permettendo di pagare molto poco per piccoli volumi di dati.
A partire da luglio viene introdotto un prezzo minimo per l'abbonamento di 5$/mese, pari circa a 1Tb di spazio, quindi se siete loro clienti, vi siete persi l'email di stanotte e avete un archivio di poche centinaia di gb, potrebbe essere conveniente ora cercare alternative e iniziare a scaricare eventuali file da recuperare

ciao, un po' di tempo fa avevo scritto un piccolo programmino in python che implementava i codici di correzione Reed-Solomon per vedere se avevo capito la teoria.
Dopo averlo abbandonato a se stesso per qualche mese sento parlare delle vicende di raivo otp e mi viene il cagotto, allora nasce WeedcUp, che poi ho pubblicato su github, un programma che prende i miei segreti otp e li salva sotto forma di codici QR in un file postscript che posso stampare.
Negli ultimi giorni mi è finalmente venuta voglia di aggiungere qualcosa, una funzione per salvare le chiavi pgp segrete.
Tecnicamente avrebbe funzionato anche prima, dato che accetta e stampa qualsiasi tipo di file, ma una chiave segreta, soprattutto rsa, tende a diventare grande abbastanza da essere scomoda.
Allora ho preso ispirazione da paperkey, un altro progetto che si occupa di stampare chiavi pgp, ed ho aggiunto uno script che estrae dalla chiave segreta solo le parti veramente segrete e le salva in un file molto più piccolo, in modo tale che l'intera chiave possa essere recuperata da questo e dalla chiave pubblica.
E allora eccoci qui, avevo voglia di vantarmi un po' dopo aver passato un pomeriggio a leggere rfc 4880

Hi, this is a question that popped into my mind when i saw an article about some AWS engineer talking about ai assistants taking over the job of programmers, this reminded me that it's not the first time that something like this was said.
My software engineering teacher once told me that a few years ago people believed graphical tools like enterprise architect would make it so that a single engineer could just draw a pretty UML diagram and generate 90% of the project without touching any code,
And further back COBOL was supposed to replace programmers by letting accountants write their own programs.
Now i'm curious, were there many other technologies that were supposedly going to replace programmers that you remember?
i hope someone that's been around much more than me knows something more or has some funny stories to share
It's happened a few times in my career where people tell me I'll be obsolete, but it's always been some company hyping their new product and suits frothing at the prospect of not having to pay me anymore.
So far they're like 0 for 8 or so.
Now I will say the goalposts move. What I'm doing now is for sure not what I was doing 10 years ago. I'm definitely heavier in devops and infra than where I was before (ironic because they said we'd never have to worry about that stuff again if we moved to the cloud). AI is still basically machine learning, just in a while loop, so I've spent time learning that. So, in a way, yes we're obsolete in the sense that if I was the same engineer I was 10 years ago I wouldn't be worth nearly this much, I had to grow and evolve with technology.

I'd agree that some specifics have been made obsolete. Some habits and routines are currently being ignored or skipped, but the amount of skill that's gone away is very small.
As mentioned before, we downsized brutally after Y2K. The people most affected were the highest-paid who weren't the best code-grinders, and these were the documenters, the programme people, and the mentor types. We lost our guides, our structure, and our historians. We've been growing again like feral children rebuilding society from the wasteland like it's Mad Max, and there's a LOT of the Why that we either don't know, that we ignore, or that we skip in the interests of (insert manufactured urgency here).
We are re-learning some of the whys, but we haven't yet seen the half-assedry chickens come home to roost on that. The symptoms are there: Boeing's Gilligan's Island in Space, supply-chain sploits in waves, personal information lost weekly, all these things that are clipboard hassles we stopped doing that pelrevent massively expensive things later.
Crowdstrike may die now, mainly because they were marauding leopards we allowed to eat our face. Solarwinds before that, same issue but they seem to be okay. There are dozens of ohShit moments that could lead to similarly preventable problems, that we knew not to do ... once.
Well get there again but we'll be rediscovering a lot of what some techbro will claim is obsolete, old-practice, too-cautious, hand-wringing in our neu and moderne go-hard/break-lives paradigm.
I know this is c/programmerhumor but I'll take a stab at the question. If I may broaden the question to include collectively the set of software engineers, programmers, and (from a mainframe era) operators -- but will still use "programmers" for brevity -- then we can find examples of all sorts of other roles being taken over by computers or subsumed as part of a different worker's job description. So it shouldn't really be surprising that the job of programmer would also be partially offloaded.
The classic example of computer-induced obsolescence is the job of typist, where a large organization would employ staff to operate typewriters to convert hand-written memos into typed documents. Helped by the availability of word processors -- no, not the software but a standalone appliance -- and then the personal computer, the expectation moved to where knowledge workers have to type their own documents.
If we look to some of the earliest analog computers, built to compute differential equations such as for weather and flow analysis, a small team of people would be needed to operate and interpret the results for the research staff. But nowadays, researchers are expected to crunch their own numbers, possibly aided by a statistics or data analyst expert, but they're still working in R or Python, as opposed to a dedicated person or team that sets up the analysis program.
In that sense, the job of setting up tasks to run on a computer -- that is, the old definition of "programming" the machine -- has moved to the users. But alleviating the burden on programmers isn't always going to be viewed as obsolescence. Otherwise, we'd say that tab-complete is making human-typing obsolete lol

so the various jobs around computers were kind of obsoleted, but the job description just shifted and the title remained valid most of the times,
now i'm interested to see what we'll do 20 years from now rather than just being annoyed by the "don't learn ${X}, it's outdated" guys
If a tool were created that properly converted an UML diagram into a project without any need for code, all the programmers that lost their job to this tool would then be hired by the company that offered it, in order to give maintenance and support to everything the customers want in their programs.
It would be removing programmers from they payroll of some companies but they would still be working for them, just further down in the chain.
The same is true for AI. If AI could completely replace programmers in some area, it would need a lot of programmers itself to keep dealing with all the edge cases that would show up from being used everywhere that a programmer was needed before.
Rational Rose etc. could generate code from UML diagrams, then you "only" needed architects.
In reality it only gave a little help during the design phase, as soon as someone touches the generated code, you have to manually merge changes to UML.
Oracle has a product called Oracle Policy Automation (OPA) that it sells as "you can write the rules in plain English in MS Word documents, you don't need developers". I worked for an insurance organization where the business side bought OPA without consulting IT, hoping they wouldn't have to deal with developers. It totally failed because it doesn't matter that they get to write "plain English" in Word documents. They still lack the structured, formal thinking to deal with anything except the happiest of happy paths.
The important difference between a developer and a non-developer isn't the ability to understand the syntax of a programming language. It's the willingness and ability to formalize and crystallize requirements and think about all the edge cases. As an architect/programmer when I talk to the business side, they get bored and lose interest from all my questions about what they actually want.

it reminded me of a script i made some time ago to save my otp secrets in case of loss of device or a reenactment of the raivo otp incident,
so i decided to make it public on github, hope someone here finds it useful
the density is not great, about 1kB per A4 page, but it can recover from losing up to half of the printed surface and, if stored properly, paper should last very long

Ai dischi serve davvero la cache?
È una curiosità che mi è venuta recentemente quando stavo facendo spesa,
Vedo che la maggior parte dei "dischi" (sia HDD che SSD) che vedo presentano una certa quantità di "cache DRAM",
Da quel che so serve a migliorare le prestazioni, mantenendo blocchi utilizzati di frequente in una memoria più veloce, e, per gli SSD, a ridurre i cicli di scrittura sulla memoria flash.
Ma qualcosa di simile se non mi sbaglio lo fanno anche sistemi operativi come linux e windows, mantenendo in memoria file letti e scritti di recente, quindi mi chiedo, fa davvero molta differenza avere o no una cache anche sul "disco" al di fuori di benchmark, come crystaldiskmark, che disabilitano esplicitamente la cache del sistema operativo?

tl;dr Sì, fa davvero molta differenza.
Anzitutto, in generale aggiungere altri livelli di cache, su un bus/dispositivo lento, aiuta sempre.
La cache interna e del sistema hanno ruoli diversi, non sono una in alternativa all'altra.
La cache del sistema operativo è a conoscenza della struttura dei file. Quindi sceglierà il momento migliore per "inviare" le scritture "cached" al disco, e quando "invalidare" la cache costringendoti a rileggere, sapendo quando apri o chiudi un file, e se lo apri in lettura o scrittura, etc.
Viceversa, il disco non sa come sono fatti i file, ma sa come è strutturato fisicamente il disco. Sugli SSD non è detto che dall'indice del blocco può indovinare su quale punto di quale chip si trova, perché questa corrispondenza cambierà nel tempo per rendere il disco più longevo. Quindi con queste informazioni aggiuntive, può sfruttare alcune euristiche basate sulla struttura fisica per migliorare le prestazioni.
Per gli hard disk invece ti serve semplicemente perché sono dannatamente lenti e ogni aiuto fa differenza.
Inoltre, si parla di DRAM, quindi volatile. Quindi più che i blocchi usati spesso sono quelli usati di recente che si trovano nella cache del disco, perché non sopravviverebbe al riavvio.
Alcuni hard disk hanno un piccolo SSD dentro che invece tiene i dati usati più spesso, e sono molto più veloci di un hdd normale. Ma su un ssd questo non ha senso perché se potessi fare una memoria non volatile più veloce faresti direttamente un ssd più veloce.

Privacy Pride: il 23 settembre nelle città italiane per rivendicare il diritto alla privacy contro il regolamento europeo CHATCONTROL
Il 28 settembre 2023, i governi degli Stati membri dell’UE avalleranno il regolamento sugli abusi sessuali su minori (più brevemente ChatControl).
Con la nobile scusa di fermare gli abusi sui minori, riusciranno finalmente a intercettare automaticamente e senza mandato giudiziario tutte le chat e le email di tutti i cittadini per individuare (con ampio margine di errore!) materiale pedopornografico, in barba al principio dell’inviolabilità della corrispondenza e all’art. 15 della Costituzione italiana e dell’art. 12 della Dichiarazione Universale dei Diritti Umani.
Noi sappiamo che gli abusi sui minori non si combattono intercettando indiscriminatamente i cittadini, ma intervenendo sul degrado sociale ed economico delle loro famiglie.
Se vogliamo implementare provvedimenti tecnici a favore dei bambini, allora la politica potrebbe concentrarsi piuttosto su come lo Stato promuove oggi la sorveglianza sugli studenti proprio attraverso l’adozione nella scuola pubblica di piattaforme cloud extraeuropee che drenano dati senza alcun reale controllo sovrano italiano ed europeo e senza alcuna possibilità di opporsi seriamente da parte del singolo studente o della singola famiglia.
Siccome l’opinione pubblica italiana è stata tenuta all’oscuro sia su chatcontrol, sia sulla questione delle piattaforme cloud della scuola, cercheremo di informare i cittadini con dei sit-in nelle più importanti città d’Italia:
• Roma, Largo della Torre Argentina (angolo Via S. Nicola de’ Cesarini)
• Milano, Piazza XXIV Maggio
• Torino, Via Garibaldi, angolo piazza Castello
• Genova, Via Vado 41R, COL – Sala Bruno Nanì La Terra, nel quadro dell’evento formativo “Introduzione alla protezione dei dati personali e sicurezza digitale”
• Venezia, Fondamenta delle Zattere (ancora in forse)
È importante che i cittadini chiedano subito ai propri governi e ai propri europarlamentari di fermare l’approvazione di questo regolamento, altrimenti a breve potremmo ritrovarci con un sistema in grado di intercettare tutti i cittadini in cerca di immagini di abusi; e se domani questo sistema venisse esteso per ricercare qualsiasi contenuto che non sia ritenuto consono alle posizioni ideologiche del governo pro tempore?

Da quel che ho capito nessuno l'ha ancora specificato, però questi due metodi mi sembrano plausibili
Metodo 1: rendere illegali applicazioni con crittografia e2e,
Metodo 2: richiedere che ogni applicazione con crittografia e2e mandi una copia in chiaro di ogni messaggio alla polizia postale prima che venga crittografato

Esattamente: come dice @Giovanni Petri in risposta a @AnxiousDuck in questo momento non si parla (ancora) di creare backdoor alla crittografia.
Il metodo individuato è far sì che ogni client disponga di un sistema che setaccia automaticamente ogni frase, ogni immagine e ogni video, per individuare contenuti che possano far pensare ad abusi su minori.

Insomma tutto il sexting tra maggiorenni giovani o quello tra fidanzatini minorenni, tutti i giochi di ruolo sessuali, i video equivocabili e tutto ciò che il sistema IA riconoscerà come problematico in base al suo schema (perché uno schema di intelligenza artificiale può impazzire e riconoscere problematico anche l'atto di compravendita di una barca che si chiama "bimba" o la foto di una banana e una pesca), tutto ciò potrà essere guardato prima dall'addetto di whatsapp, telegram, google e poi da qualche agente della postale...
La rottura della crittografia invece è un proposito che si sta tentando di perseguire nel gruppo dei 5+2 (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Nuova Zelanda + India e Giappone) e di cui qualcuno inizia a parlare anche in Europa. In questo caso, la motivazione nobile non saranno più i bambini ma il "😱TERRORISMO!😱"... 😎😎😎

Ora sì e questa è già una deroga alla direttiva e-privacy, ma quella era chatcontrol 1, di cui ovviamente non si è parlato affatto; ma se passa questo provvedimento, i fornitori dei servizi saranno OBBLIGATI

In realtà è soprattutto Google a sostenere questo provvedimento (e l'ha messo in pratica già con i suoi servizi), ma altre bigtech non sono molto contente e addirittura Apple, che in un primo momento aveva aderito, ha cambiato idea.
