@silverpill No, the app and server run in the same process and communicate via bridge. C2S isn't needed here. The server uses S2S for federation with other instances.
Can it viably run on a self-hosted home server as well, as a relay or a backup? How do you handle data restoration in case the phone breaks down or is stolen? And does it allow for multiple devices with the same account?
Can you expand more on the relay part? I'm curious how it deals with being offline.

Any chance that phones could network directly with each other via bluetooth? A peer to peer network of sorts? What are the top new functionalities you hope to unlock with bundling both server and client side app together on phone? More seemless onboarding? Doing some more advanced ActivityPub client-to-server work, as you'd control both and could do C2S work you knew would work?
the general user will only need a universal feed app for all formats, but I thought they'd be on servers based on locality. this might be better if we can prevent harassment.
we'll also need dedicated fedi servers for news outlets, governments, corporations, video production studios etc. and reader/player apps that fully embrace our social graph. and a decentralized fiat protocol to facilitate payments to creators based on the time spent with their work. #PublicPatron

got me curious - the company I worked at a few years ago had basically the same thing on the far-out roadmap (the main project was "let's have a private datastore on your device", social was more or less the add-on)
@silverpill Different architecture. Activity Connect bridges actors that can't communicate directly (blocked instances, different networks).
The Holos relay provides stable identity for mobile servers. Your phone runs the actual ActivityPub server, and the relay simply proxies requests to your current tunnel URL. It doesn't bridge or store content - just maintains a permanent address while your phone's IP and tunnel change.
@julian User blocks always work, a standard ActivityPub.
The relay server handles infrastructure moderation (spam, abuse, illegal content). Your personal instance in the app is where you have freedom: choose who to follow, who to block, no admin deciding for you.
Moderation at the relay level, freedom at the personal level.
I think I get the reasoning behind the "Your own server" keywording for the client, but I'm curious about why you use "relay" here? Relay has a pretty well understood meaning in the fediverse that is definitely not understood as an identity provider. I am very interested to see this project though.
@emergencygg Fair point! "Relay" in the Fediverse usually means redistributing public posts.
Ours is more like: identity provider, proxy and message queue. It relays traffic between the Fediverse and your phone, but you're right... might be confusing terminology.

This could dramatically lower the bar for owning your data, and for "self hosting" right in your pocket. It also raises the question of how end user friendly the relay server will be.
Are we talking a one-click install on commodity servers à la Wordpress, or something more involved like using Docker on a VPS? That will make a big difference in audience and adoption.

Hey everyone, we have some pretty big news to share. You might remember that we announced a big restructuring for the Mastodon team earlier this year. Today marks an important milestone in this transition.
Our Founder, @Gargron is stepping down from his position as CEO. He shared a reflection on his time building and growing Mastodon on our blog.
We want to take a moment to express the Mastodon team’s deep gratitude and admiration for Eugen, and for the technology and community he has built here. We’re thrilled he’s staying on in an advisory capacity.
We’re also looking ahead to what comes next. In another blog post published today, we introduced Mastodon’s new leadership team. Our Executive Director is @mellifluousbox (formerly, CFO of Mastodon gGmbH), who has already represented Mastodon on international stages.
We also shared an organisational update, and a fundraising update, in that blog post.
This important milestone also marks the beginning of a new era of community governance and collaborative decision-making for Mastodon. Now more than ever, we need to work together to build safe and resilient social spaces. We must build information networks that are resistant to billionaire control and surveillance. It will take all of us working together to do that.
So please consider joining our mission; we have a lot of work to do.
What does this community governance look like? Is it purely "input" and is your "executive" pulling the strings or is the community the one that makes ultimate decisions on the direction the app is moderated and created? Is there a reformation of the values you want to create within the management of development you want to announce or is the direct control of the main contributors without listening to external feedback going to continue? There is whole articles written about criticism of your internal structures, and this addresses exactly 0 of them, now I hope that is because this announcement is sudden and unprepared but I won't hold my breath on that matter.
I will donate to Mastodon development but I won't donate funds that are mingled in to run Mastodon.social.
Is there an option where donors can donate exclusively to the development side and those funds be used only for development. I've heard others offer the same sentiment.

And when it needed to be said, you said it with love and care and intention. Not a single one of us is perfect, but your personal ethics and integrity always shone through, and that's what builds trust.
Over an entire decade, these tiny things chip away at you slowly. Some things chip faster. I steer clear of showing vulnerability online, but there was a particularly bad interaction with a user last summer that made me realise that I need to take a step back and find a healthier relationship with the project, ultimately serving as the impetus to begin this restructuring process.
I gave up the CEO-ship of the company I founded 25 years ago.
Looking back, it was one of my better decisions for me and for the organization.
It is very difficult to explain the strain of such an exposed position to anyone who hasn't experienced it him/herself.
Gargron does a better job of explaining that strain than I could at the time.
It certainly was not the first effort to realize a decentralized social network, but it seems to have become the most successful effort so far and it's still evolving.
@Gargron Thanks for everything you have done! Also, thanks for creating a vibrant decentralized social network whose existence has impacted the world for the better!
National leaders & CEO’s of conglomerates have taken notice of Mastodon, & have begun to embrace the Fediverse as a realistic alternative to social media.

Over the past year, we've been talking to builders across the open social web to help more users be protocol-agnostic on the platforms they're already on. One of these platforms is Bonfire Social.

La qualità delle informazioni che vengono condivise si può toccare con mano scorrendo la timeline locale. Il grafico che ho condiviso parla della crescente fiducia da parte di noi utenti dei confronti di chi gestisce e coordina l'istanza. Chapeu.

Il grafico Mostra una linea che in effetti va ben oltre l'agosto 2025 e arriva fino al mese di novembre, ma non essendoci l'etichetta di novembre 2025 in basso, il bot non è riuscito a capire quale fosse l'ultimo periodo considerato
Diciamo che se aggiungiamo al bot quel minimo di intuito che può portare a leggere il grafico con una certa flessibilità, allora la lettura del grafico diventa interpretabile correttamente. Considera poi che se non ci fosse una grande istanza italiana, le conseguenze sarebbero ancora peggiori: Infatti, proprio a causa della volontà di iscriversi sui server più affollati, molti giornalisti gli italiani hanno deciso di iscriversi a mastodon.social, mostrando di non capire assolutamente perché è opportuno avere un account nel fediverso...
Per quanto riguarda l'account di @valigiablu l'unico problema è il fatto che l'account su mastodon è a tutti gli effetti un BOT e raramente risponde a chi lo menziona. Mi sembra che il loro social media manager abbia ormai scelto di presidiare solo Bluesky
@elettrona è una questione molto complessa. Devi infatti tenere conto del fatto che descrivere un'immagine costa tempo ed è uno sforzo in più per la maggior parte di quelli che sono potenti tipo di un social di microblogging che per definizione privilegia la velocità alla lentezza.
Per questo motivo è un tuo diritto sollecitare chi pubblica immagini senza testo alternativo: tra l'altro molti di loro accettano volentieri l'invito e semplicemente non avevano mai pensato che potesse essere utile scrivere il testo alternativo; ma è anche diritto di chi viene sollecitato reagire in maniera stizzita 🤣
Molti amministratori delle istanze più grandi, come mastodon.uno, livellosegreto.it o bida pubblicano ormai periodicamente messaggi di invito ai loro utenti per incentivarli alla pubblicazione di immagini con il testo alternativo, ma questo deve giustamente rimanere al livello di un invito e, se possibile, di un invito non troppo pressante.
È fondamentale accettare il fatto che alcuni utenti preferiscano il modello "scrivi, allega e invia" e che, quando scrivono su mastodon, la loro esperienza non sia stressante

First I've heard of this project, and I hope you don't mind if I ask a few (really basic) questions about it to see if it's right for me. Is this based on ActivityPub? Does it incorporate existing applications as a sort of aggregator, or it is a new and separate platform?
@scooter it is based on activitypub, its a new platform and it can connect with all the existing applications and aims to bring novel types of activities and experiences into the fediverse
your Elixir ActivityPub library has been on my radar for a while, but unfortunately pulling it in would involve having developers who solicit donations for slop code: github.com/bonfire-networks/bo… in my dependency graph, and I can’t justify that for software that’s meant to serve the marginalized communities currently being harmed by LLMs like the ones you’re using.

There is, in the same github repo, also a .claude folder with a CLAUDE.md containing extensive instructions, as well as a rubber_duck.chatmode.md.
Were LLM/vibe coding involved in the development of the project? Will they be used in the future?
@nullpotential as you can see from some of the documents you referenced, we sometimes experiment with using LLM tools for "rubber duck" debugging when stuck on a problem, but none of the Bonfire extensions or features have been AI-generated

both bonfire social and openscience.network are built on bonfire, they address different needs and have different features and UX. We are now working with communities that needs tools for organising and coordinating (events, decision making, mutual aid, etc) which will result in new extensions that everyone will be able to install and use in their own bonfire app. We're not competing or building a mastodon alternative, we're building tools for communities in the open social web...

Mastodon 4.5 brings Quote Post authoring features to everyone. Note that you can manage whether or how your posts are quoted by others, both globally on the new Posting Defaults page, and individually on specific posts. You can also revoke the use of a post. The Fediverse feels more vibrant when conversations are buzzing! Mastodon 4.5 fetches replies from other servers to show you more complete conversation threads - another much-anticipated feature.
Server owners can do more to manage and showcase their community. Mastodon 4.5 has settings to define the visibility of different feeds (timelines), and also the ability to set the default landing page to the local feed. There are also new tools for restricting problematic usernames, and improvements in the moderation interface.
We recommend that server owners update their Mastodon installations to bring these improvements to their communities as soon as they can. There are a lot of great updates, now ready for everyone.

Oh boy. I'd been wondering, 'When will my Mastodon experience become more like hanging out with the hordes of kids and immature adults on Facebook?' We truly do live in marvelous times.
What does that mean? I understand that emoji are like any other Unicode character, and they are displayed by fonts like any other character, so they do not need any special treatment.
Perhaps I'm a minority but exactly this feature is the most annoying for me because I have to click for something I don't want (acceleration). It's nice to see replies from other servers. But I hate this urge to click in *every* thread. Is there any possibility to disable this clickediclick completely?
While I appreciate the new features, the UX feels like a massive regression to me. Unfortunately mastodon doesn't support different default settings for visiblity of posts (public) and replies (unlisted), and with the new popup dialogue instead of the drop down it takes 3 clicks to change the visibility, plus mouse movement and aiming 🙁
Is this just a change in the web client to fetch the extra replies? Or can other clients, eg @pachli on Android, benefit from this change as well when connected to servers running v4.5?
@chris it is not! When you load someone profile for the first time, it may pull up any existing posts by that person that are already on your server, but usually, it shows their timeline as empty. That information is available on the user's own server; Mastodon just needs to reach out and get it.
Am I the only one who finds the addition of quoting ON THE BOOST BUTTON?!? both annoying and slightly insane.

Now I have to click twice as much to boost something while browsing, and if I decide to reply with quote I have to NOT click the reply button but click the boost button... what?!?

One MAJOR request is to figure out how to ensure pictures and video get passed on 100% of the time. I still get 1/4 of the pictures and videos as blank images and video containers with no way to view the content. Mastodon will never go mass till that’s fixed. I understand why it does that, but normal users only see it as not working.

Andare su Preferenze (menù a destra)

Compilare tutti i campi e concedere almeno i permessi di scrittura post.
Salvare in un luogo sicuro (password manager) quanto generato.

A parte che è bello fare il nerd è usare #mastodon da command line, ma la cosa può essere molto utile se la usiamo in abbinata ad altre azioni/comandi. Pensiamo ad esempio ad un integraszione con #forgejo, ad esempio potremmo fare un post (tramite #webook) al termine del nostro workflow.
Un altro esempio è il collegare l'account ad un servizio di monitoraggio come #uptimekuma in questo modo si avrà una pagina che indica ai follower lo stato dei nostri servizi.
Oppure usarlo al termine di un nostro script che preleva i prossimi appuntamenti da un caledario ics.
Insomma, potete integrare l'invio di un toot alla fine di un vostro script custom, il limite a questo punto è solo la fantasia!

Mastodon adds support for updates of Event objects
I got ask this question a hundred times (as an Mastodon admin, workshop leader, or “Fediverse-mentor”).
“Somethings wrong: why is Mastodon not showing my updated event?”
The answer was simple. Mastodon did not support updates to Event objects or any other objects that it does not natively support, but are converted to a note/status, such as Article. It will soon, though. The code was finally merged into the main branch yesterday.
The main reason was that “Mastodon does pretty arbitrary processing steps to the article before storing it in the database, and those steps are subject to change; if those steps changed between two versions of an article, the changes in processing will also be recorded as edits, misrepresenting them as a change of the underlying article” (Comment by ClearlyClaire).
These reasons are understandable, but I think that the positive aspects of this change far outweigh them. Thank you @Mastodon !
The change itself is rather simple, but I'm not sure how to confidently test for all the edge cases.
Also there is a lot of code duplication, we should find a way to refactor that.
I'd like to mark the start of 2025 with the first message from my self-hosted instance. You may already know me as @_elena@mastodon.social. Well, now I also run my own #ActivityPub microblogging server, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost and #GoToSocial (and #Phanpy, which I'm using to compose this).
I registered this domain – aseachange.com – a looooong time ago but never did anything with it. It was the very first domain name I ever bought, even before securing elenarossini.com (!!!). It was so long ago, but I remember I was inspired by Beck's album Sea Change. seachange[dot]com was taken, so I grabbed Aseachange.
I absolutely love its meaning of profound transformation and I think it's PERFECT for my self-hosted #Fediverse instance and what it represents: independence, empowerment and digital sovereignty.
Ever since setting it up, I've been feeling joyful and hopeful. Everytime I look at myself in the mirror, I think: I'm in control of my own social media platform. And it feels SOOO GOOD.
What do I have in store for 2025? I plan to use this account to post messages about #selfhosting, learning #Linux, privacy and digital sovereignty.
I will also keep posting from my Mastodon account because you don't give a Lamborghini to someone who just passed their driver's license. I barely know what I'm doing here, so I feel a lot safer (for now) keeping my mastodon.social account as well... In case anything goes wrong here. Better safe than sorry!

Grandi pulizie sul mio account Framapiaf aperto nel 2017: ho cancellato tutti i follower inattivi da almeno un anno.
Risultato sono passato da 992 "seguaci" a 370. Non li ho contati, ma molti degli inattivi avevano proprio 0 attività. Non è sicuramente un dato generalizzabile però...
@luca In parte dipende anche dalla longevità dell'account, ho fatto le pulizie anche sull'altro mio account (contributopia) creato su vivaldi social 3 anni fa e in effetti la percentuale di inattivi si abbassa al 20% circa

Pensaci, ma se non scrivi mai, non ha alcun senso che io ti segua. Sto solo sprecando bit inutili e creando legami dispendiosi tra istanze. Io non posso sapere se sei morto oppure se sei solo in sonno, ma questo per me è indifferente.
Aggiungo inoltre, che se sei un utente che vuole rimanere silenzioso o nell'anonimato, è tuo diritto seguirmi, ma è mio diritto negarti il follow o bloccarti. Il mondo è pieno di stalker, di bot IA, di profilatori... Quindi sarà mio diritto eliminare quello che ritengo non utile o addirittura potenzialmente pericoloso?
2) la sospensione degli utenti inattivi da parte degli amministratori
Premesso che il Fediverso è sostanzialmente pubblico, quindi non è necessario creare un account, è chiaro che qualcuno potrebbe decidere di creare un account 99% lurker, anch solo per la comodità di rispondere se capita. Oggi purtroppo il rapporto tra utenti attivi e utenti complessivi si è drammaticamente abbassato (siamo tra 1/10 e 1/20!)
D'altra parte, io - da amministratore - sono libero di decidere se tenere o meno utenti inattivi o utenti lurker (vedi il discorso dello stalker).
Gli utenti non attivi da più di sei mesi potranno essere eliminati senza preavviso
Altri admin come @snow sono ancora più stringenti: non interagisci? Ti elimino perché sicuramente sei un bot.
In altre istanze dalla vocazione generalista invece (sono anche mod di mastodon.uno) siamo più tolleranti ed eliminiamo per direttissima solo i bot (quelli che creano un profilo con la pubblicità in bio, per intenderci) ma purtroppo siamo consapevoli del fatto che un utente inattivo da più di sei mesi molto difficilmente si risveglierà mai dal suo "coma".
Purtroppo eliminare un bot non è un'operazione senza conseguenze; ci sono alcune istanze che esistono solo grazie ai bot.
Guarda per esempio l'immagine con i server Friendica con più utenti (qui il link a fediverse.observer, ma per un problema tecnico di fediverse.observer manca friendica.world che è il server realmente più attivo e "numeroso"): 1) tieni conto che con poliverso.org ho eliminato finora più di 1500 utenti tra bot, spammer e utenti inattivi, e che ne elimino una quarantina al mese. E infatti osserva il rapporto tra utenti attivi e utenti complessivi 2) squeet.me e friendica.vrije-mens.org sono due istanze strapiene di bot, spammer, monnezza e altro, ma risultano in cima alla lista 3) istanze come social.trom.tf, opensocial.at e loma.ml hanno meno utenti attivi di poliverso.org, ma chi guarda solo agli utenti attivi
Ora, poliverso è un'istanza italiana e non è in "concorrenza" con questi server, ma se lo fosse, gli converrebbe eliminare gli utenti inattivi e gli spammer? Allo stesso modo, un account che si iscrive e non fa nulla, viene tecnicamente contato come utente attivo per 30 giorni.
Su Mastodon.uno ne cancelliamo una decina al giorno. Sono account che non spammano, non molestano, ma piazzano solo una bio per aumentare la persistenza web. Potremmo lasciarli lì e non darebbero fastidio a nessuno, ma li cancelliamo per una questione di "igiene". Ma si tratta comunque di trecento utenti attivi al mese che spariscono dalle statistiche. Mastodon.uno lo fa, ma quante altre istanze mondiali tra quelle molto affollate lo fanno?

@Bright5park Because you need to establish a working relationship with a fulfillment company in the region close to your customers (because almost nobody will pay 30+ EUR for shipping), split your stock between all the regions, register for sales tax in every country you sell to. The overheads would eat any revenue when the total quantity is 1000 units.

Folks, the last update to the iphone client by mastdon isnt a winner. Its a lot slower. And double tapping the home button to go to the top of the messages no longer works. Hope you fix this soon.
@dansup After all, we're in the Fediverse: it's true that it's an environment that recognizes the values of open source, but it also needs to be an environment where everyone respects each other's time. You did well not to give in to "social pressure" and to take all the time you needed: after all, you've saved precious time for anyone who wants to contribute to code improvements in the future.
You kept your word even though some may have doubted it despite the prior evidence of you being a good actor.
Unfortunately I believe it has happened that less ethical devs have misled people that way so the idea in the screenshot isn't entirely wrong. Just missing the part that some people can in fact be trusted more than others.
I imagine you've earned more trust in the eyes of some that used to doubt you now too.
My first contact with Pixelfed in 2022 was somewhat a disaster... First because of my lack of knowledge of the Fediverse and second because of how Pixelfed worked... but the idea of a federated Instagram didn't stop me. I like the fact that there are alternatives.
Years later, with the Pixelfed.es server up and running, the announcement of the OpenSource launch of Loops was something I had to try. Even without federation, I was still curious to try to run it on my own server!
I was lucky to get a good domain to set up my Loops server, and there it is, working perfectly and with the Federation working exactly the way I want it to be... The initial Federation issues were addressed and fixed very quickly and now it's running smoothly. And no, I'm not lying, you can visit Loops.one and check it out if you want to test Loops anytime!
It's clear that Loops still has a long, long way to go, but we at TKZ will continue to bet on, among others, Loops software (and Pixelfed), on an open, inclusive, and accessible Fediverse for everyone.
Anyone who spends any time contributing code online will eventually have interactions with entitled, selfish and lazy users with snarky and unproductive comments trying to diminish their work.
Open source (or don't) your code whenever you want, choose whatever license you feel fits your project, push commits/releases whenever you feel like it, enable/disable the issue tracker as you see fit, you don't owe anyone your time and skills.
We need to talk more about reducing "tone policing" here. I understand you want people to use content warnings, but guess what? They don't have to! If they don't do it, just unfollow them.
But please, don't harass them. That's what drove away our last big wave.
Do whatever you need to feel safe, but harassing people to your standards doesn't make THEM feel safe. Stop it.
I generally agree with the sentiment here, I'd just add that the appropriate use of CWs should be clearly stated in the server rules, and posts breaking them should be reported to the server's admin to handle, rather than a bunch of people from different servers forming a perhaps well-meaning mob and repeating the same message.

@stefan I completely agree! If it's part of your server rules then by all means, but it's up to the folks of that server to enforce, not some rando that doesn't like your hashtag.
I'm not saying never use CWs, I'm saying don't lecture people about it.
I do trust that people mean well when they do this, but a big part of the issue, I think, has been the fact that federation hasn't always worked so well before, so when you reply to someone to tell them about how to use CWs or alt text, you might not see 10 other people doing the same.
Would like to suggest combining "tone policing" with how we can make it easier for new users to grasp how every instance can set their own "rules" for their users - often in a CoC and/or ToS.
But within limits, as otherwise risk getting defederated.
Some guidelines on making it easy for users to find someones home instance and the rules it has could also be good. Both for instance admins and users.
@tsvenson the tone of the tone policing matters too. For example, a suggestion that using appropriate hashtags (to help filters) and/or CWs might actually increase reach since people who care about this will only boost properly tagged and/or CWed posts will elicit a different reaction than a shouting match to the tone of «CW YOUR POLITICS, ASSHOLE».

I've now been a mod on a top 10 instance for half a year. During that time been exposed to quite a few reports. Many that the team have discussed how to handle, where I have learned a ton from my much more experienced team mates.
It has been humbling about so many things needed to make the fediverse a good place. Not just for us who fit in already. Also for many more, including those it will be a challenge adjusting to how things work here - from what they are used to.
I always found CWs to be backwards. How the hell am I supposed to know what is going to set someone off? They should honestly be removed and let readers self-filter.
@blainsmith I don't think it's such a problem, at least I haven't seen it be with the people I follow....
I guess it's a kind gesture to put CW if you know that some people don't want to see/can't see without panic, e.g. spiders. I don't think such warnings are a bad thing in general. Things get bad if done excessively and we all may draw that line in different places. 🤷
Then again I make use of filters a lot to block out posts about politics. I like that I can easily unto filters and read posts anyway.
@thibaultamartin I don't think it matters as many people never use CWs the "right way" so will never be caught properly.
Btw, I'm not saying we should never use CWs there could be some strong content that a server wants to always be me marked. But that's up to server admins to enforce not randos yelling at newcomers
@thibaultamartin OTOH, filters don't work reliably either given how many people have carried over from The Other Places the bad habit of intentionally mistyping names to avoid algorithmic demotion/shadowbanning/etc.
I've already had a few randos in my mentions trying to tell me either:
1) It's ok to correct people if done politely Just because you use polite words doesn't mean it's polite. If you're giving people advice they didn't ask for, you're harassing them.
2) My request was a form of tone policing Asking people to not harass others is not "tone policing", it's basic trust and safety. It's that classic sad defence that "you're intolerant too!" if you call out intolerance.
Normally I wouldn't engage but I feel strongly we need to have this discussion and call out this almost entirely white male issue.
The entire Mastodon team is working really hard to add features to bring in more people, in a safe way. It doesn't do any good if these guys just chase them away!
the distinction we should make is re tagging others, not what you post with nobody tagged. when tagging others, be super considerate. if it might come off as nagging, don't do it.
I want us to be the social media network for everyone, but some do not want us to get bigger and most of those people are the reason this place survived the leanest years. that's tough to deal with. it's a huge conversation, esp when we're the only design that can handle that size well. ugh.

This needs to be solved at the instance level. Police your instance all you want, get the culture you want there. But leave other instances alone. It just doesn't scale to think you can "fix" the other 10000.
If they're not doing it the way you want, then unfollow them
but I also want a place where people disagree without being disagreeable. I want people to interact here like they would IRL. I want to be corrected sometimes. I want to see stuff I think is wrong or untrue sometimes. it's harder without many of the social cues we have IRL but trying to make this a place where we never see something upsetting won't be good either. it's very much like the web + email. it should be open but not annoying or people won't use it.
@wjmaggos As an old white guy, I've had a personal journey here. It's taken me awhile to understand that being comfortable with being corrected is a privileged place. To see that others didn't have this same comfort level was a big step, but it was also difficult to see how correcting people without being asked is an intrusion. It may be welcome some of the time, but it's still an intrusion.
But this is a very general point. I'm just saying to do this over CWs just feels so unnecessary.
@Scott Jenson I completely agree. I always try to make it clear to users of my forums that they shouldn't object to the way other users post. Users can report any rule violations to us moderators either through the integrated reporting system or by direct message. If they don't receive a satisfactory response, they can mute or block that user. But they shouldn't harass other users, otherwise the social Fediverse will be under such pressure that only the troublemakers will remain.

Il Linux Day Prato si svolgerà sabato 25 ottobre 2025 al PRISMA (Via Galcianese 34/B, Prato). Il programma prevede due tracce parallele: Generale e Tecnica, con momenti in plenario.

Frugando in un mio vecchio blog quasi dimenticato ho ritrovato questo testo della maestra Cristina Mecenero, tratto dal sito ormai scomparso di Retescuole.
Il testo, che ha più di 15 anni mi sembra ancora attualissimo.
La decentralizzazione consente una maggiore personalizzazione nel modo in cui ogni server viene moderato e gestito, inclusa la gestione della privacy dei dati. Allo stesso tempo, la mancanza di una supervisione centrale implica che nessuno sia realmente "responsabile" dell'ecosistema dei server nel suo complesso.
Nel recente articolo di Sohyeon Hwang, Priyanka Nanayakkara e Yan Shvartzshnaider, Trust and Friction: Negotiating How Information Flows Through Decentralized Social Media (pre-print qui ), abbiamo intervistato amministratori e membri del server (n=23) per esaminare sia ciò che spinge le persone a considerare i server della community come custodi affidabili dei dati delle persone , sia le nuove sfide per la privacy che derivano da un'infrastruttura decentralizzata
Ecco un riassunto;
I protocolli decentralizzati dei social media consentono agli utenti di interagire tra loro su server indipendenti e ospitati dagli utenti (ovvero istanze) mentre si autogovernano. Questo modello di governance dei social media basato sulla comunità apre nuove opportunità per un processo decisionale personalizzato sui flussi di informazioni, ovvero quali dati degli utenti vengono condivisi, con chi e quando, e, di conseguenza, per la protezione della privacy degli utenti. Per comprendere meglio come la governance della comunità modella le aspettative sulla privacy sui social media decentralizzati, abbiamo condotto un'intervista semi-strutturata con 23 utenti di Fediverse, un social network decentralizzato. I nostri risultati illustrano fattori importanti che influenzano la comprensione dei flussi di informazioni da parte di una comunità, come le regole e gli sforzi proattivi degli amministratori percepiti come affidabili. Evidenziamo le "frizioni di governance" tra le comunità che sollevano nuovi rischi per la privacy dovuti a incompatibilità di valori, pratiche di sicurezza e software. I nostri risultati evidenziano le sfide uniche dei social media decentralizzati, suggeriscono opportunità di progettazione per affrontare le frizioni e delineano il ruolo del processo decisionale partecipativo per realizzare il pieno potenziale della decentralizzazione.

This opens new possibilities for turning conversations into citable, #FAIR and permanent research objects. But what should be archived? How does this affect scientific discourse?
FYI for all researchers who have an account on the OSN test instance: it has now moved to sandbox.openscience.network, with all profiles and data preserved, and the old URLs should still work and be redirected to the new location. We simple didn't want this instance to become synonymous with "the" open science network, which should be decentralised, but it will continue to be used for meta discussions and co-design.

I'd definitely want to do it! How should I do it? (Actually, I ve been meaning to write you so long ago, because I love what you're building here and the way you're doing it, but I'm not sure how to do it or what can I do)
great series of questions in that post. In my experience, social media is a great way to escape the formality of scholarly publishing, getting at the subtext and things left unsaid in a published work. Not trying to burst your bubble, but my prediction is that treating posts as scholarly outputs will make them more formal and less meaningful with regard to what I just described. Also, could you not cite a post before this?
Can't speak for everyone involved but the intention isn't necessarily to publish "social media" discussions as they typically look, but to expand "social networking" to new types of collaborative exploration/production of science. E.g. you could imagine a qualitative researcher asking a specific question (maybe using circles and boundaries to target it to a specific audience) and collecting in depth responses (instead of using a survey tool or conducting one-on-one conversations)
as a qualitative researcher myself, this potential use case raises red flags to be honest. Interviews and surveys are well established for good reasons, ie they allow for controlled study design, have boundaries that enable consent conditions to be communicated clearly, enable clearer communication between researchers and subjects, etc. One can imagine all they want, but in practice I don’t think this will enhance empirical qualitative research as a data collection platform
Fair enough, we're not scientists ourselves, and as mentioned in the blog post we don't claim to have the answers. We've just built some prototypes based on suggestions from a few researchers involved so far, and are extending an invitation to join in answering these questions, and in co-designing and experimenting with the tools. There's no reason the checks and balances available with survey tools can't be built into this for example.
