The EU is pushing one more time for the ChatControl regulation (aka CSAR), mandating client-side scanning of private conversations in order to detect child sexual abuse material (CSAM). A black box would scan your messages, and report them to police in case of suspicion.

Together with 500 scientists and researchers, I have signed an open letter arguing that this proposal would be dangerous for online privacy, and would not be effective against CSAM:

Demain, 10 septembre, La Quadrature sera fermée en soutien à la mobilisation. Les manifestations et actions feront l'objet de surveillance et de répression.

Voici quelques conseils pour se protéger au mieux :

- Quand cela est possible, ne pas venir avec son téléphone : les données de bornage lient une identité à un lieu et sont conservées pendant 1 an. Et en cas d'arrestation, les policiers peuvent mettre la pression pour obtenir le code de déverrouillage et accéder au contenu du téléphone.

Deregulating digital rights: Why the EU’s war on ‘red tape’ should worry us all

The European Commission has made deregulation a top priority for the EU over the next four years. Under the banner of ‘simplifying’ EU rules, we risk seeing the entire digital rulebook – for which we have advocated for years – being stripped away. If the EU wants a healthy, competitive tech market that puts people at its center, then this deregulation push is not only bad for the protection of fundamental rights, but is also an act of self-sabotage which must be reversed.

470 civil society society organisations, trade unions and public interest groups are making it clear to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Commissioners and EU Member States that our rights, planet, health and justice are not for sale. They call on EU lawmakers to protect and promote the rights enshrined in the EU Charter and international human rights law, instead of endangering them.

Chat Control: Where Things Stand – and Why We Must Act Now

The European Union is once again moving fast on the dangerous Chat Control regulation. This proposal would force providers to search all private chats, messages, and emails automatically for suspicious content – generally and indiscriminately. That means your conversations with friends, family, doctors, or lawyers could be opened to suspicion, regardless of who you are. This is why it is opposed by a broad consensus among the public, civil rights groups, and pirates.

The Current State of Play

While the European Parliament has positioned itself almost unanimously against indiscriminate chat control, the Member states are a different affair entirely:

  • 15 Member States already support Chat Control (including France, Italy, and Spain).
  • 6 countries firmly oppose (such as Austria, Finland, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands).
  • Germany and several others remain undecided – making them decisive for the upcoming vote.

On October 14, 2025, European Interior Ministers are scheduled to vote on adopting Chat Control. If adopted, Chat Control would break encryption, enable mass surveillance, and set a precedent that authoritarian governments worldwide could exploit. Experts warn it would not protect children, but instead flood investigators with false reports while leaving real offenders harder to track.

What You Can Do to stop Chat Control

We need to act now – loud and clear. Here’s three things you can do today to help us fight the proposal:

  1. Sign our petition!
  2. Contact your Members of the European Parliament!
  3. Share your own ideas with us!

Why This Matters

Your right to private communication is at stake. Once we allow mass scanning of personal messages, there is no turning back. Europe should take the lead in protecting freedom, security, and dignity – not normalizing a culture where everyone is treated as a suspect by the state.

Let’s send a strong message: No to indiscriminatory surveillance! Yes to private communication!

Five years ago, the EU proposed the #DSA & #DMA, our strongest defence against unchecked Big Tech power.

🛡️ They protect rights, demand transparency, ban manipulation, and open the door to fairer competition & real choice.

As Trump pressures the EU, let’s remember: these laws are Europe’s firewall for democracy. They must be enforced, defended & improved, not weakened.

Last May, the French government launched a working group aimed at legalizing real-time facial recognition.

Far from being a surprise, this announcement is part of a series of proposals put forward by Macron's governments, along with industrial and scientific players.

In this op-ed, we argue that facial recognition is incompatible with democratic forms of life.

USPP to host audio/video meetings in place of IRC

The US Pirates will be running a trial until at least November 9th to host public-facing meetings over Jitsi, or another IT committee tried platform instead of Internet Relay Chat (IRC). This means non Pirate National Committee members may join audio/video meetings opposed to PNC only – opening up the pathway for face-to-face meetings with the public.

So, if you are ready to join PNC and others via public audio and video, join our Discord to receive the public links as they’re posted!

During the September 7th meeting, members discussed the unnecessary, disgusting usage of ICE raids.

“There’s no proper way of doing an ICE raid,” said Captain Jolly Mitch.

Massachusetts Pirate Party has been performing FOIA requests for local ICE raids.

The US Pirate Party opposes all ICE Raids conducted without due process. They are inhumane, fascist, and un-American.

September 19th, Pirate Party of Greece and USPP will be together for Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Keep a lookout on our Discord, X, and the regular Spyglass articles.

Ty Clifford, Vice Captain

Thanks for citing us, House Republicans. Now do something

We were pleasantly surprised when congressional Republicans introduced our farewell article to the former president, titled Biden’s press freedom legacy: Empty words and hypocrisy, into the record at a House Judiciary Committee hearing this week.

That’s great — it’s always nice to have our work recognized. But if Republican lawmakers agree with us that former President Joe Biden was bad on press freedom, someone should really tell them about this Donald Trump character who’s in office now. All the abuses we identified in the article Republicans cited have (as the article predicted) worsened under the new president, and he’s come up with plenty of new ones too.

We wrote a letter to let the committee know that if it’s serious about addressing the issues our article discussed, regardless of who is in the White House, we’re here to help. We’ll let you know if they reply (but don’t hold your breath). Read the letter here or below.
