The discrete 14-bit DAC under test. (Credit: Sine Lab, YouTube) How easy is it to build your own Digital to Analog Converter (DAC)? Although you can readily purchase a wide variety of DACs these days, building your own can be very instructive, as the [Sine Lab] on YouTube explores in a recent video with the construction of a discrete 14-bit DAC. First there are the different architectures you can pick for a DAC, which range from R-2R (resistor ladder) to delta-sigma versions, each having its own level of complexity and providing different response times, accuracy and other characteristics.
The architecture that the [Sine Lab] picked was a String DAC with interpolator. The String type DAC has the advantage of having inherently monotonic output voltage and better switching-induced glitch performance than the R-2R DAC. At its core it still uses resistors and switches (transistors), with the latter summing up the input digital value. This makes adding more bits to the DAC as easy as adding more of these same resistors and switches, the only question is how many. In the case of a String DAC that’d be 2N, which implies that you want to use multiple strings, as in the above graphic.
Scaling this up to 16-bit would thus entail 65,536 resistors/switches in the naive approach, or with 2 8-bit strings 513 switches, 512 resistors and 2 buffers. In the actual design in the video both MOSFETs and 74HCT4051 multiplexers were used, which also necessitated creating two buses per string to help with the input decoding. This is the part where things get serious in the video, but the reasoning for each change and addition is explained clearly as the full 6-bit DAC with interpolator is being designed and built.
One big issue with discrete DACs comes when you have to find matching MOSFETs and similar, which is where LSI DACs are generally significantly more precise. Even so, this discrete design came pretty close to a commercial offering, which is pretty impressive.
We love seeing the incredible work many RF enthusiasts manage to pull off — they make it look so easy! Though RF can be tricky, it’s not quite the voodoo black art that it’s often made out to be. Many radio protocols are relatively simple and with tools like gnuradio and PocketSDR you can quickly put together a small system to receive and decode just about anything.
[Jean-Michel] wanted to learn more about GNSS and USB communication. Whenever you start a project like this, it’s a good idea to take a look around at existing projects for designs or code you can reuse, and in this case, the main RF front-end board is taken from the PocketSDR project. This is then paired with a Cypress FX2 development board, and he re-wrote almost all of the PocketSDR code so that it would compile using sdcc instead of the proprietary Keil compiler. Testing involved slowly porting the code while learning about using Python 3 to receive data over USB, and using other equipment to simulate antenna diversity (using multiple antennas to increase the signal-to-noise ratio): Testing antenna diversity The main board uses two MAX2771 GNSS front-ends, which filter and convert the received signals to either a digital output or optionally as I and Q outputs for conversion with discrete ADCs. This data is then read by the 8051 core on the FX2, and the data is sent over USB to maintain a fast and reliable stream. On the PC side, this can be decoded using the original PocketSDR software, or one can build a decoder using gnuradio.

“It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times?” Perhaps not anymore, if this Ig Nobel-worthy analysis of the infinite monkey theorem is to be believed. For the uninitiated, the idea is that if you had an infinite number of monkeys randomly typing on an infinite number of keyboards, eventually the complete works of Shakespeare or some other famous writer would appear. It’s always been meant to be taken figuratively as a demonstration of the power of time and randomness, but some people just can’t leave well enough alone. The research, which we hope was undertaken with tongue firmly planted in cheek, reveals that it would take longer than the amount of time left before the heat death of the universe for either a single monkey or even all 200,000 chimpanzees in the world today to type the 884,647 words of Shakespeare’s complete works in the proper order.
We feel like they missed the point completely, since this is supposed to be about an infinite number of monkeys. But if they insist on sticking with real-world force monkey labor, what would really be interesting is an economic analysis of project. How much space would 200,000 chimps need? What would the energy requirements be in terms of food in and waste out? What about electricity so the monkeys can see what they’re doing? If we’re using typewriters, how much paper do we need, and how much land will be deforested for it? Seems like you’ll need replacement chimps as they age out, so how do you make sure the chimps “mix and mingle,” so to speak? And how do you account for maternity and presumably paternity leave? Also, who’s checking the output? Seems like we’d have to employ humans to do this, so what are the economic factors associated with that? Inquiring minds want to know.
Speaking of ridiculous calculations, when your company racks up a fine that only makes sense in exponential notation, you know we’ve reached new levels of stupidity. But here we are, as a Russian court has imposed a two-undecillion rouble fine on Google for blocking access to Russian state media channels. That’s 2×1036 roubles, or about 2×1033 US dollars at current exchange rates. If you’re British and think a billion is a million million, then undecillion means something different entirely, but we don’t have the energy to work that out right now. Regardless, it’s a lot, and given that the total GPD of the entire planet was estimated to be about 100×1012 dollars in 2022, Google better get busy raising the money. We’d prefer they don’t do it the totally-not-evil way they usually do, so it might be best to seek alternate methods. Maybe a bake sale?
A couple of weeks back we sang the praises of SpaceX after they managed to absolutely nail the landing of the Starship Heavy booster after its fifth test flight by managing to pluck it from the air while it floated back to the launch pad. But the amazing engineering success was very close to disaster according to Elon Musk himself, who discussed the details online. Apparently SpaceX engineers shared with him that they were scared about the “spin gas abort” configuration on Heavy prior to launch, and that they were one second away from aborting the “chopsticks” landing in favor of crashing the booster into the ground in front of the launch pad. They also expressed fears about spot welds on a chine on the booster, which actually did rip off during descent and could have fouled on the tower during the catch. But success is a hell of a deodorant, as they say, and it’s hard to argue with how good the landing looked despite the risks.
We saw a couple of interesting stories on humanoid robots this week, including one about a robot with a “human-like gait.” The bot is from China’s EnginAI Robotics and while its gait looks pretty good, there’s still a significant uncanny valley thing going on there, at least for us. And really, what’s the point? Especially when you look at something like this new Atlas demo, which really leans into its inhuman gait to get work done efficiently. You be the judge.
And finally, we’ve always been amazed by Liberty ships, the class of rapidly produced cargo ships produced by the United States to support the British war effort during WWII. Simple in design though they were, the fact that US shipbuilders were able to ramp up production of these vessels to the point where they were building a ship every eight hours has always been fascinating to us. But it’s often true that speed kills, and this video shows the fatal flaw in Liberty ship design that led to the loss of some of the early ships in the class. The short video details the all-welded construction of the ships, a significant advancement at the time but which wasn’t the cause of the hull cracks that led to the loss of some ships. We won’t spoil the story, though. Enjoy.
Artificial intelligence has always been around us, with [Timothy J. O’Malley]’s 1985 book on AI projects for the Commodore 64 being one example of this. With AI defined as being the theory and development of systems that can perform tasks that normally requiring human intelligence (e.g. visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making), this book is a good introduction to the many ways that computer systems for decades now have been able to learn, make decisions and in general become more human-like. Even if there’s no electronic personality behind the actions.
In the book’s first chapter, [Timothy] isn’t afraid to toss in some opinions about the true nature of intelligence and thinking. Starting with the concept that intelligence is based around storing information and being able to derive meaning from connections between stored pieces of information, the idea of a basic AI as one would use in a game for the computer opponent arises. A number of ways of implementing such an AI is explored in the first and subsequent chapters, using Towers of Hanoi, chess, Nim and other games.
After this we look at natural language processing – referencing ELIZA as an example – followed by heuristics, pattern recognition and AI for robotics. Although much of this may seem outdated in this modern age of LLMs and neural networks, it’s important to realize that much of what we consider ‘bleeding edge’ today has its roots in AI research performed in the 1950s and 1960s. As [Timothy] rightfully states in the final chapter, there is no real limit to how far you can push this type of AI as long as you have more hardware and storage to throw at the problem. This is where we now got datacenters full of GPU-equipped systems churning through vector space calculations for the sake of today’s LLM & diffusion model take on ‘AI’.
Using a Commodore 64 to demonstrate the (lack of) validity of claims is not a new one, with recently a group of researchers using one of these breadbin marvels to run an Ising model with a tensor network and outperforming IBM’s quantum processor. As they say, just because it’s new and shiny doesn’t necessarily mean that it is actually better.

Guardando la serie Orange the new black non ho potuto fare a meno di riflettere su quello che non so se fosse un messaggio voluto dell'autore, che ci parla dell'innata incoerenza e fragilità umana. E parla del concetto di giustizia umana e dei suoi limiti. Mi riferisco specificatamente all'evento della rivolta e alla detenuta donna che gestisce le trattative con il governatore. La trattativa riesce ad arrivare a un buon punto, ma si arena inesorabilmente sull'evento di sangue che ha dato inizio a tutto: la classica "goccia" che va traboccare il vaso. Sintetizzerò brevemente gli eventi: Già le condizioni all'interno del carcere di minima sicurezza erano peggiorate notevolmente, da quando una società privata, avida e senza scrupoli, aveva preso il controllo del carcere. Ne seguono poi disordini causati dall'inserimento in organico di guardie del tutto prove di umanità. Durante questi disordini, una guardia, mal addestrata e mal guidata, uccide una detenuta. Questa guardia, dotata di umanità, non sarà più in grado di riprendere la sua vita e il rimorso per quanto successo la distruggerà, ma chiaramente è ben lontana dall'essere l'unica artefice della vicenda cruenta. Questo da il via alla rivolta. La detenuta responsabile delle trattative, dopo aver ottenuto praticamente tutto, anche grazie al direttore del carcere, unico vero amico e sostenitore di tutte le detenute, chiede "giustizia" per chi ha ucciso, soffocandola, la compagna di carcere. Il rappresentante del governatore, si difende sostenendo che non controlla il sistema giudiziario e la trattativa finisce per arenarsi. In seguito la rivolta ha termine, per il tradimento di una detenuta, e finisce in modo abbastanza cruento e violento, con la consueta ricerca del capro espiatorio, nonché la classica uccisione di una guardia, persona autenticamente sadica, il cui omicidio sarà addebitato ovviamente alla rivolta, con conseguente ricerca dei leader della rivolta da incolpare.
Il cortocircuito che ho notato è che chi ha vissuto come detenuto all'interno di un carcere, e vissuto un iter giudiziario che tutto ha in mente meno lo scopo di fare giustizia, ha bloccato una trattativa che avrebbe apportato beneficio all'intero carcere (di minima sicurezza) per quella che ha chiamato giustizia, che però in pratica avrebbe attivato solo un sistema alla fine in grado di produrre solo violenza (non certo giustizia), sistema che conosceva benissimo.
Un'ulteriore analisi necessaria riguarda poi il personale del carcere, che probabilmente a causa delle spinte di una società in-civile, finisce per diventare o vittima o carnefice e comunque corrotto come i carcerati o il sistema economico che alimenta le carceri e il loro business. Un sistema incapace di rieducare, per precisa volontà popolare, in definitiva. Un sistema "sforna delinquenti". E' triste che in tale sistema non importi a nessuno se la persona è colpevole o innocente, ma valgano solo ragioni di opportunità. La conclusione finale è che nessuna società civile riesce a controllare gli istinti violenti umani, sebbene nel nord europa, fra i paesi scandinavi, esistano effettivamente carceri non lager. Forse l'umanità, come qualsiasi specie vivente, è destinata all'estinzione.

Ho sempre il timore che, quando un disco mi piace, sia perché nel momento in cui l’ascolto è ciò che (inconsciamente?) il mio “io musicale” vuole in quel periodo della vita, che sia un giorno solo o un anno. Perciò, forse, il mio giudizio è falsato: la stessa opera, a distanza di tempo potrebbe farmi un effetto molto diverso, peggiore, magari. Naturalmente ci sono dischi che resistono allo scorrere della vita e sono di certo quelli che personalmente non posso smettere di ascoltare: hanno acquisito una valenza che supera tutto ciò che gli accade intorno.
Non so se “Songs of a Lost World” dei “Cure” possa ambire a quell’empireo, pittosto ristretto, in verità. Probabilmente è anche dovuto al fatto che i “Cure” non sono mai stati uno dei miei gruppi preferiti, nemmeno all’apice della loro carriera, quando erano di certo una delle band più importanti della scena dark-wave e Robert Smith godeva di una popolarità immensa. Ed anche per questo mi domando se sia una mia mancanza di approfondimento o semplice affermazione di gusti diversi. O, anche più probabile, distrazione.
Un tempo che potremmo pensare ad appannaggio di Peter Gabriel o dei Pink Floyd per uscire con nuova musica (seppur già proposta, in parte, dal vivo): sedici anni e viene dopo un disco, “4:13 dream” che per i più è claudicante, almeno. E si invecchia, nel mentre. Come se accadesse sempre ad altri, magari perché i musicisti si sentono una categoria a parte, ma non è così. Essere umani è eguale per tutti. Ed allora questo diventa un disco sulla difficoltà del vivere, sul dolore (la perdita del fratello, per Smith), sulle inevitabili somme che si devono tirare, su ciò che ci circonda e che peggiora ogni giorno.
Questo è un disco dove la musica prevale, in una sorta di messaggio che travalica le sensazioni date dalle parole. Ogni canzone, e sono quasi tutte lunghissime, c’è una “intro” che precede i versi ed è una scelta che qualche critico ha bollato come un ritorno, ma senza entusiasmo, agli anni ‘80. Invece funziona, eccome. Dona ai brani un’aura quasi epica, anche per il drumming potente e per la chitarra di Reeves Gabrels (recuperate i “Tin Machine” ogni tanto), nella band dal 2012, tagliente, sferzante.
Il secondo singolo, “A fragile Thing”, è esemplificativa di questo mood, con un basso potente, tocchi di chitarra che ricordano un vento gelido, il cantato chiaro, limpido. Invece “Alone”, più lugubre, più ieratica è la prova che questa è un’opra dolente, che sfocia in “I Can Never Say Goodbye” dove la perdita del fratello è un temporale acustico, una litania dolorosa. Ma forse “Endsong”, la canzone finale del disco (oltre i dieci minuti), è quella che può far risaltare di più il valore di queste canzoni. E’ un brano potente, marziale, tribale, dove Gabrels può lasciare spazio alla sua elegiaca musica, un contrappunto alle parole quasi definitive “...it’s all gone/ no hope/ no dreams/ no more” e quel “...nothing” finale che non solo chiude il disco, ma sembra far calare il sipario su una esistenza intera.
E’ un grande disco, questo: lo si intuisce subito, dal primo ascolto. E come tutti i dischi di spessore cresce nel tempo, per ora brevissimo, dopo la sua uscita. Essendo una riflessione in musica, ognuno ne può far parte, per ciò che desidera, perché i temi sono universali. Gli artisti hanno il dono di farci partecipi tutti in egual maniera, ma non a tutti riesce con convinzione. Stavolta sì, anche per uno come me che non è un “fan”. Quelli che lo sono possono gioire.

Dobbiamo trovare un equilibrio che ci consenta di salvaguardare la privacy, garantendo al contempo sicurezza e protezione dei nostri cittadini e delle nostre società dalle minacce in continua evoluzione. Il gruppo di alto livello sull'accesso ai dati per le forze dell'ordine ha definito le esigenze operative delle forze dell'ordine e delle autorità giudiziarie e le raccomandazioni includono una serie di misure diverse, come il rafforzamento delle capacità, la cooperazione con l'industria, la standardizzazione e la legislazione. Dovrebbero costituire un prezioso contributo per il lavoro in quest'area, che richiede una valutazione d'impatto approfondita.
La criminalità e l'insicurezza hanno un effetto soffocante sulla società e, se non affrontate correttamente, impediscono alle persone di esercitare le proprie libertà, di esprimere la propria opinione o di camminare per strada comodamente. Le minacce possono anche essere più dirette non solo offline, ma anche online. I bambini sono particolarmente a rischio e dobbiamo fare di più per proteggerli da molteplici rischi che vanno dal cyberbullismo alla sextortion, dalle dipendenze online alla radicalizzazione. Sono convinto della necessità e dell'urgenza di adottare il regolamento proposto per prevenire e combattere l'abuso sessuale sui minori online. Nel 2010, sono state segnalate circa 1 milione di segnalazioni di materiale di abuso sessuale sui minori e di adescamento online. Entro il 2023, sono state segnalate più di 36 milioni. L'attuale regolamento "provvisorio", che consente il rilevamento volontario di abusi sessuali su minori da parte dei fornitori di determinate piattaforme online, scadrà nell'aprile 2026. Senza le norme a lungo termine proposte, tale forma di rilevamento che ha contribuito a salvare i bambini e a identificare i trasgressori per oltre 10 anni sarà vietata nell'UE. Credo che possiamo e dovremmo trovare un modo fattibile per finalizzare i negoziati sul regolamento in sospeso affinché entri in vigore in tempo prima della scadenza del regolamento provvisorio.
Se confermato, mi impegno a lavorare anche per finalizzare i negoziati sulla revisione della direttiva sulla lotta all'abuso sessuale sui minori. La direttiva integra il regolamento e fornisce uno standard comune per le indagini e le azioni penali, armonizzando le definizioni di reati e sanzioni. È una parte essenziale dell'equilibrio che la nostra società esige dal mondo digitale.

Un paio d'ore fa è stato inviato agli iscritti il nuovo numero di Magda, la newsletter di Centrum Report dedicata all'Europa Centrale. Per chi non la conoscesse, Magda è quel posto in cui segnaliamo i nostri lavori e i nostri interventi sui media (di solito la radio, ma a volte capita di fare capolino anche in tv).
Magda è anche lo spazio delle segnalazioni culturali. Questo mese ad esempio parliamo dell'inaugurazione della sede permanente del Museo di Arte moderna a Varsavia, e potrete anche scoprire chi ha vinto il premio Nike, il più importante riconoscimento letterario polacco.

Proprio come nel 2017, molte persone che si sono riversate su Mastodon dopo l'acquisizione di Twitter da parte di Apartheid Clyde nell'ottobre 2022 hanno avuto grandi esperienze su Mastodon... ma la maggior parte no. Alcuni (soprattutto le persone di colore) hanno avuto esperienze davvero orribili. Nel giro di pochi mesi, l'ottimismo e l'eccitazione si sono trasformati in delusione e frustrazione.
Perché? Sfide di usabilità e onboarding, razzismo e sessismo e altri problemi culturali, mancanza di strumenti per proteggere se stessi...

The Fediverse Schema Observatory helps to improve interoperability, the botsin.space server will shut down, and more.
The News
The Fediverse Schema Observatory is a new project by Darius Kazemi, who runs the Hometown fork of Mastodon as well as co-wrote to Fediverse Governance paper this year with Erin Kissane. The Observatory collects data structures from the fediverse; it looks how different fediverse softwares use and implement ActivityPub. It explicitly does not gather any personal data or posts; instead it looks at how the data is formatted in ActivityPub. ActivityPub and the fediverse has a long-standing problem in that the selling point is interoperability between different software, but every software has their own, slightly different implementation of ActivityPub, making good interoperability difficult to pull off. Kazemi has posted about the Observatory as a Request for Comments. The Observatory is explicitly not a scraper, but considering how sensitive the subject can be in the fediverse community, Kazemi has taken a careful approach of informing the community in detail beforehand about the proposed project, and how it deals with data. The easiest way to see and understand how the Observatory is works is with this demo video.
The botsin.space Mastodon server for bots will shut down in December. The botsin.space server is a server dedicated to running bots, with a few thousand active bots running. The server is a valued part of the community, with the wild variety of bots running on the server contributing to the Mastodon in both useful and silly ways. The admin states that over time running the servers has become too expensive over time, and that is was not feasible to keep the project going. The shutdown of botsin.space showcases an ongoing struggle in the fediverse, running a server is expensive and time-consuming, and every time a server shuts down the fediverse loses a block of its history.
Sub.club is a way to add monetization options to fediverse posts. Sub.club started with being able to add paywalls to Mastodon posts, recently expanded to long-form writing with support for Write.as, and now has added support for WordPress blogs as well. Sub.club has posted a tutorial on how to add the plugin to WordPress, making it an easy system to set up.
Bridgy Fed, the bridge between ActivityPub and ATproto has gotten some updates, with the main new feature is that you can now set custom domain handles on Bluesky for fediverse accounts that get bridged into Bluesky. This brings the interoperability between the networks closer to native accounts, and makes having a bridged account more attractive.
Upcoming fediverse platform for short-form video, Loops, got some press by The Verge and TechCrunch. Creator Daniel Supernault said that there are now 5k people on the waiting list, and that a TestFlight link will go out soon for the first 100 people. An Android APK will be made available at some point as well.
GoToSocial is working on the ability to for servers to subscribe to allowlists and denylists. This makes it easier to create clusters of servers with a shared allowlist, such as the Website League. As I recently wrote about Website League, it is a cluster of federating servers that uses ActivityPub but exists separately from the rest of the fediverse, and it is started by people who build a new shared space after Cohost shut down. Website League servers predominantly use GoToSocial or Akkoma, and have been actively working on tuning the software to meet their needs.

Since I'm working on push notifications and would like to include at least an experimental feature in the next beta, probably the fix will be released tomorrow.
