Hi guys! I am concerned about the potential #Ubuntu switch (from 25.10) to Rust #coreutils, due to its different non-GPL license. If that happens, I'd plan to distro hop to #Debian within the next Ubuntu LTS upgrade (around August 2026).
I already use RaspiOs (Debian-based) in my personal Raspberry home server and in a very old 32-bit netbook.
Do you think switching to Debian is the best move for me?

I use my daily driver desktop PC (with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) for "everything", which includes surfing the web and watching streamed contents, handling all of my digital paperwork and documents, coding (c++/wxwidgets and Android), gaming (Steam) and retrogaming, and more.
Youโre switching from a GPL licensed core utils to an MIT licensed core utils. I cannot support this decision. If this goes through, I will migrate all servers and workstations that I admin to Fedora/Rocky.

Ho sempre asserito che invece di comprare un TV smart รจ meglio acquistarne uno stupid. Prima o poi le app del TV non verranno piรน aggiornate. Il delta costo pagato per aver la TV smart sono sprecati anche in considerazione che uno "scatolino" che fornisce le stesse funzionalitร tramite connessione HDMI costa da 60 a 100 Euro e quando sarร obsoleto con piรน o meno la stessa cifra si potrร comprarne uno nuovo di pacca senza dover cambiare il TV!
@AAMfP Magari non si troveranno piรน TV non start, ma se uno si trovasse come me che dopo 6 anno comincia ad avere problemi ad avere tutte le applicazioni funzionanti, piuttosto che cambiare TV il box multimediale costituisce una scelta obbligata.
@dodi @AAMfP ci sono ancora, ma sono quelle destinate agli alberghi ed hanno il volume basso. L'ha presa un mio amico per spendere di meno, ma dato che ha problemi di udito deve alzare il volume al massimo per continuare a non sentire niente.
Non guardo la TV da 40 anni, quindi spero mi perdonerete se sposto un poco il tema.

a me รจ capitato recentemente che ben due a distanza di pochi giorni mi apparissero screenshot ( su quello che stavo guardando) senza che avessi minimamente toccato il telecomando o detto qsa! E mi รจ apparso un altra volta sullo smartphone la notifica di vecchie puntate di un programma che avevo guardato per qualche minuto in smarttv ( passati 10 minuti dal girare canale), programma che erano anni che non guardavo!! Mi sembra spiare, controllare...
ormai tutti ci spiano, a volte parlando si attiva il cellulare senza che l'abbia toccato. Le tv smart registrano cosa stai guardando, non che me ne importi, se me lo chiedono lo dico io stesso. Intanto in camera sono stato costretto a mettere Google Chromecast perchรฉ non ho l'antenna e in questo modo riesco a vedere tutto ciรฒ che mi interessa. Mi spiano? Facciano pure, cosรฌ magari si accorgono che non mi piace 4 hotel, 4 ristoranti, 4 matrimoni, 4 vaffa...

@illetteratolettore @MaurizioPaglia @AAMfP Io la pubblicitร sono 15 anni che la salto. Ho un sistema basato su Mythtv (di cui mi occupo anche della traduzione in italiano) e Kodi. Registro da TV i programmi che mi interessano e me li guardo a pezzi quando voglio e ovviamente quando c'รจ la pubblicitร la salto. TV in diretta quasi zero.
@stenfio @MaurizioPaglia @AAMfP @dodi configurato come serve dns, filtra tutte le porcherie che si trovano sulle pagine web. E, come per magia, tutte le pubblicitร spariscono. Naturalmente puoi c9nfigurare altre funzioni, tipo escludere certi dispositivi o aggiungere determinate liste di siti da bloccare ecc. Tutto un altro web.

If you're not a video creator but you follow someone on YouTube, you might want to politely suggest to them that they mirror their channel on PeerTube so that people can watch without having to use YouTube.

p.p.s. It's not as difficult or expensive as you might think to start your own PeerTube server. There are managed hosting services which do all the techy stuff for you (installation, upgrades, maintenance, fixing any problems etc), and these start from US$6.99 per month inclusive of everything (fedihost.co/pricing).
You can ask @fedihost about entry level PeerTube hosting, and @Cloud68 is also a good one.

A lot of YouTube channels no longer make much in direct monetisation, they often make more from Patreon and sponsorships.
Patreon and sponsorships are platform-neutral, so they can be done on any video platform including PeerTube (for example @thelinuxexperiment mentions sponsors at the start, @michellemay mentions Patreons at the end).

A sponsor wants to see numbers, and i bet you Squarespace is not happy with the numbers peertube makes for 90% of the people they currently have under contract (Squarespace seems to sponsor every video i watch haha, lots of art stuff) Don't get me wrong, I've been looking into peertube recently because I want to get rid of yt. But the monetisation via sponsors is nowhere near what you can make on yt.

If someone's PeerTube started getting large numbers of views, they would be able to get a sponsor the same way they do on YouTube or any other video platform. And you can have sponsors on multiple platforms, in fact it's probably easier so you can upload the same file everywhere.
Also, patrons are available at any scale, I have patrons for my Fediverse accounts.
...but bear in mind these are being paid for by the instance owners. Usually they only cover costs for videos that other people might want to watch.
If you upload only for your own viewing, it seems reasonable to ask for payment? YouTube is only "free" is because it is spying on people and filling videos with advertising (and now it's allowing hate speech).

@cardboard No law AFAIK, it's just them being greedy and thinking they can make more money by pleasing Trump.
They want government contracts, they want favourable laws in other areas etc, and they see that Trump responds to people who suck up to him, so this is what they do.
I hope the staff at YouTube/Google walk out over things like this, sounds like a horrible company to work for.
@the5thColumnist depends on video length and such. PeerTube offers a feature where you can sync over all your videos from YT, though it is disabled on some instances
@the5thColumnist I know cuddly.tube offers unlimited storage (albeit at the cost of being just a tiny bit slow), so that might be a good starting point at least
@the5thColumnist fair enough, I presume they just have a *lot* of storage and will apply caps if needed. it's also run by a group that hosts some other stuff, so I suspect some of its revenue comes from other services
Iโm all for giving up on YouTube in theory. Iโve already ditched Google, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Office, etc. etc. Sign me up, but losing YouTube would be HARD. I watch so many creators on there and itโs the de facto place for sharing videos online.

Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell everyone you're doing horrible stuff, the worst crimes imaginable. They make videos, articles, livestreams, all pushing the same lies designed to make everyone hate and fear you.
Unfortunately, Google has bent the knee to the Trump regime, changing geographical names, allowing hate speech on its platforms, censoring the opposition, and so on... It's disgusting!

-There is an iPhone app, but it is severely restricted by bizarre app store rules which don't really suit federated networks. I'd recommend using the website or podcast options as they're not restricted.

I havenโt found any potential hosts that would allow enough space for how much content I make, and the pricing and setting up to make my own would be too much. Not only this, YouTube also removed this from an example of rule-breaking:

...so they seem to be now allowing people to be accused of mental illness if they are LGBTQIA+ etc.
Accusations of mental illness is how LGBTQIA+ groups have been persecuted, it's why it was illegal in so many countries for so long. Allowing this kind of language is opening the doors for awful and dangerous bigotry.
I totally understand why one would react to this change in a negative way. However, myself being a minority and subject to more hate speech than the people that see themselves as the superior race, have never seen the group of people I belong to mentioned specifically in hate speech policies. That doesn't mean I never felt less protected by them. It's not like YouTube now supports hate speech towards certain groups just because they don't mention them anymore.
Considering this particular service went down just before the US elections last year due to an attack, guessing that at least some people don't like it existing and bringing up what they said before.
PeerTube is NOT blockchain, nothing on the Fediverse is blockchain!
PeerTube and the rest of the Fediverse are just ordinary traditional files on ordinary traditional servers. It is totally possible to delete them if you want to, just like any other file.
It is also possible to ask other servers to carry spare copies of your videos in case your server breaks down, but this is optional and up to the video creator.

Peertube is different. It is plain old data is on the server and if you delete it there, it is gone (unless somebody downloaded and saved it, but I think that is not what you are asking for)
On PeerTube videos, they are streamed from the original server even if they have federated elsewhere. The file sizes are so huge, it isn't practical to automatically copy entire videos to other servers the way that text posts are copied.
The only exception to this is if you've asked other servers to make backups of your video so that it can still be played if your server goes down. But this is up to you and totally optional.
@davethepitt @FediFollows if Iโm not mistaken, PeerTube videos are deletable (just like the rest of the fediverse), though do bear in mind that just like any fediverse platform, instances could not comply with the deletion status
I use my PS5 for media, which limits me to watching on YouTube... It's becoming apparent I need to scrap this convenience and build a streaming box to watch on my TV, cause everything is becoming nazified and I need to move more and more to alternatives that aren't on mainstream devices.
@AntiEverythingWhatever It's a long story but basically don't use the app. The rules on app stores aren't suitable for federated networks and have made it very difficult for PeerTube to make an app store app that gets approved.
