🚀 60 anni e non sentirli… più o meno 😄
🧭 Prologo
Ne ho passate tante, di tutti i tipi e in tutti i campi.
Per 30 anni ho lavorato come esperto e supporto dati e sistemi in una grande azienda di telecomunicazioni… finché un bel giorno è arrivata la diagnosi, tumore alla testa.
Mi davano per spacciato, o nella migliore delle ipotesi paralizzato a vita.
È andata diversamente, e sì, mi è andata benissimo.
Oggi sono su una sedia a rotelle, ma con una cosa che non mi hanno tolto, la forza d’animo.

In questi 8 anni da quel giorno fatidico dell’operazione, ho ripreso a studiare e smanettare forte con
Linux, server e Fediverso.
Il lavoro di prima mi ha dato basi solide, ok.
Ma adesso ho una cosa rarissima… tempo, e posso usarlo senza padroni.

mi piace, adoro il Fediverso, e mi sento di nuovo utile a qualcuno.

Anni fa stavo sui social “classici” come uno zombi, senza sapere bene nemmeno perché.
Adesso invece mi dedico a qualcosa di utile per una comunità, piccola o grande che sia, e soprattutto con una differenza enorme

Due anni di viaggio nel #Fediverso, prima fino a novembre 2025 sotto masto.host, poi il grande salto su .it, per una vera autonomia gestionale, perché qui ci piace avere il timone in mano e la rotta ben chiara.
In questi due anni abbiamo sempre detto una cosa semplice, qui è un po’ come una famiglia. Ormai ci conosciamo, ci leggiamo, ci rispondiamo, ci capiamo anche quando non siamo d’accordo. E quindi sì, è normalissimo che ogni tanto qualcuno, per mille motivi, abbia voglia di cambiare istanza. È lecito, è umano e spesso è pure una cosa positiva. Il Fediverso è anche questo.
Quello che però stona è un altro copione, che ogni tanto torna come un boss di fine livello. Sparire di colpo, riapparire altrove, senza una parola, senza un saluto, senza niente. Non serve una spiegazione, non serve un romanzo, non serve un processo. Bastava anche solo un “ciao”, un cenno del mantello, un’uscita di scena con stile.
Noi non collezioniamo figurine, non facciamo numeri, non misuriamo il valore delle persone a colpi di follower. Però un saluto, quello sì. Quello lo avremmo davvero gradito.
Detto questo, fine del sermone e via. Io torno al mio solito lavoro nel Fediverso che amo, con server, idee, incastri, manutenzioni e un pizzico di follia come da tradizione. 🚀

EDIT: the person I contacted replied and the new posts have the correct attribution. So the problem is solved.
There is a Mastodon instance that publishes content from its own PeerTube instance. These contents are narrated aloud, likely by an AI, in several languages, and are based on articles that appear online. Today this happened with an article I shared from my blog.
The problem is that there is no attribution to the original author and or the original source site. On the contrary, it gives the impression that the content was produced directly by whoever runs that site or instance.
This is completely detached from the idea of properly sharing information. Taking inspiration is a wonderful thing. Claiming someone else’s work as your own is not.
I contacted the account in question this morning. I have not received any reply, even though other content has been published in the meantime. A short while ago I also contacted the instance administrator.
I will wait until tomorrow morning. If I do not receive a satisfactory response, I will publicly disclose the instance and the related content and block the entire domain. There are additional details that I prefer not to reveal at this time which further worsen the situation.
This is not how we act in the Fediverse.

Let us avoid bringing improper practices here. You are free to use my posts as you wish. You can even make money by applying my advice.
Just do not take away my attribution.

I recall VWestlife got similarly hit with a bunch of YouTube channels a couple months ago that were mass uploading AI-generated summaries of his and other people's videos without permission (the videos themselves were just a static thumbnail image and title caption from the original video, with an AI voice reading out the AI-generated summary). He had to file copyright takedown requests to get them removed since there were no human owners to contact.

That’s foul play. If it’s easily doable, maybe put up an, um, “special” blog, specifically for this domain? One that it would probably not like being read aloud? Because I assume that the nonconsensual harvesting is done automatically.
Suspended by an instance admin that is no other than themselves, I have so much doubt. But let’s wait for their written views on the problem… but reporting is good. It helps, it draws a line between the fediverse and the least acceptable.

If you are domiciled in the USA you could file a DMCA. If the hosting company is also domiciled in the USA they should honor it I suppose. But if the hoster/hosting company is not registered with the US copyright office then they will be liable anyway. If you don't own the IP it's probably not worth the legal exposure, I imagine you don't want to get sued trying to protect some other persons IP. 😀

Sembra un po' una supercazzola per continuare col percorso del bene comune
concordo con quanto dice @12ax7. aska non era più occupato da due anni, da quando hanno fatto l accordo per il bene comune, ovvero per una cogestione, con PD al governo della città. L'accordo è poi andato a ramengo per una serie di motivi. Ora vi è a)il tentativo di riprendere quel percorso b)il tentativo di costruire un'egemonia sui movimenti presentando il tutto in modo conflittuale. Solite pratiche gesuitiche della post autonomia.
non funzionava, nei fatti il posto era chiuso da due anni. Dopo essersi fatti coprire le spalle da rifo sono passati a farsele coprire dai 5s, con tanto di appendino alla epoca dello sgombero dell asilo di via Alessandria si rivendicava la cacciata degli asilanti e la protezione di aska, cambiata la giunta hanno provato l'accordo con il PD mediato da CGIL. Non ha funzionato, affari loro. È la loro battaglia politica, non la mia, la loro non è una battaglia in difesa degli spazi sociali, è una battaglia per la riproduzione della loro stessa autoritaria organizzazione. Poi la solidarietà la do a chi viene sgomberato ma il loro percorso politico era a dir poco criticabile 20 anni fa e lo è rimasto. E ci sarebbe veramente tanto da scrivere ma non qui 😀 @12ax7
di inevitabile c'è solo crepare e stiamo lavorando anche su questo, nel loro caso ci sono delle scelte politiche reiterate in vario modo negli anni, al pari dell'area disobba nel nord est... Non c'è un granché scritto, per lo meno non in forma di "ecco a voi la storia integrale e dettagliata di come la post autonomia ha contribuito ad ammazzare il movimento no TAV e poi ha provato a cogestirsi con il comune". Invece secondo me fa molto. Aurora è un quartiere conflittuale, molto più che Vanchiglia che ormai è un'oasi studentesca e da bere.
Dopo l'Asilo hanno sgomberato le Serrande, l'Edera, la Crepa, La Molla, il Lavatoio, almeno così a mente.
Tutti posti che portavano avanti la lotta alla detenzione (sia carcere che CPR), lota che si va veramente oltre al singolo spazio.
@lorcon mah per carità, tutto può essere ma a me sembrano tentativi di razionalizzazione ex post. Che l'Asilo fosse l'ostacolo a una gentrificazione della zona ho moltissimi dubbi (e a riprova del fatto son 5 anni che non lo vuole nessuno).
Pure sulla lotta ai cpr sono trent'anni che la vedo - da quando si chiamavano CIE per intenderci- ma al netto di un grosso numero di denunce non mi risulta abbiano mai portato a particolari sgomberi se non di posti occupati magari uno-due mesi prima ma lì la questione non credo sia di cosa ti occupi ma del fatto che non ti vogliono fare stare.
@unknow sullo sgombero dell'asilo giocarono anche altri fattori: l'Asilo era da anni impegnato *molto* sulla questione CPR e se c'è una cosa che lo stato italiano tollera poco è che qualcuno si muova su quel terreno; l'area di Aurora in cui l'Asilo si trovava è al centro di dinamiche di riqualificazione urbana ben conosciuta. Lo sgombero lo voleva il governo, lo volevano i 5S, lo voleva il PD. In realtà dopo lo sgombero si creò anche un fronte piuttosto ampio, penso alle assemblee con i docenti del campus, con diversi di questi che presero posizioni anche forti sopratutto in merito alle dinamiche di riqualificazione urbana. Peccato che poi vennero fatti errori clamorosi e qualcuno decise che preferiva fare il megariot senza poi riuscire a farlo e finire a subir le forche caudine in periferia.

@cretinodicrescenzago non è tanto il doppiopesismo quanto che all'Aska mancavano una serie di caratteristiche che l'Asilo invece aveva e che lo rendevano il bersaglio perfetto per la campagna anti occupazioni lanciato da Salvini, allora ministro dell'interno. Era un posto politicamente piuttosto isolato e abbastanza centrale e conosciuto per cui il suo sgombero può far notizia (non parliamo di una baracca in mezzo ai campi). Massimo guadagno, minimo danno insomma. Infatti il post sgombero non è mai stato un problema politico ma essenzialmente una questione di ordine pubblico.
Viceversa L'askatasuna è sempre stata piuttosto attenta a costruirsi "fronti ampi" per le sue battaglie. Ora, se vogliamo parlare il linguaggio della verità, si può anche dire che di questi fronti ampi l'aska spesso faceva saltare il banco per mero tornaconto personale ma è indubbio che questo tentativo di non isolarsi politicamente in un certo senso ha comunque pagato se ancora oggi il fronte dei "difensori" dell'aska è piuttosto eterogeneo. Allo stesso modo, e sempre per parlare il linguaggio della verità, va detto sono sempre stati bravi a giocare su più tavoli, duri e puri sì ma disponibii al dialogo con le istituzioni locali quando è necessario (sia pure in posizione di forza) o a scegliere una forma di regolarizzazione quando hanno sentito che la procura di Torino amava parlare di loro all'inaugurazione dell'anno giudiziario.
Tutto questo per lungo tempo ha retto, fino a quando all'ennesima contraddizione ha fatto saltare il banco. Mi spiace per loro, perchè se non fosse stato per quell'azione inutile alla Stampa racconteremmo una storia diversa ma per quanto mi riguarda in politica essere scemi è una colpa, non una giustificazione.

@unknow tieni conto che l'Asilo ha cambiato profilo politico nel 2012/13, da essere un posto di area squatter è passato a essere un posto di area insu per cui molto più attivo su certi temi. In questo si era evitato la precedente bordata repressiva, il processo per associazione contro l'Assemblea Antirazzista, ma è stato poi coinvolto in quelle seguenti. Edera, Crepa, Molla, Lavatoio e Iris sono poi state filiazioni dell'Asilo dopo lo sgombero, dopo lo sgombero del Lavatoio quel ciclo di occupazioni si è esauirito. È verissimo che l'indicazione al momento è chiaramente: pressione sulle occupazioni storiche e no assoluto alle occupazioni nuove. @12ax7 @cretinodicrescenzago @bbacc
@cretinodicrescenzago @12ax7 per farla breve: il movimento No Tav ha ottenutto una grossa vittoria nel 2005 (ponte del Seghino, Sgombero e rioccupazione di Venaus/San Didero, il tutto condito con uno sciopero totale di bassa e media valle, e parliamo di un posto molto industrializzato, per diversi giorni) che ha imposto un'importante revisione del tracciato rendendo meno impattante; nel 2011 vi è stato il secondo atto, quello di Chiomonte. Dopo lo sgombero de La Maddalena non è stato possibile rioccupare il cantiere come 6 anni prima in quanto questo è subito stato trasformato in fortino. A quel punto secondo alcuni la lotta si sarebbe dovuta rimodulare: blocchi stradali, scioperi, ecc. Secondo altri (Aska e altri) invece bisogna trasformare la Val Susa in un Vietnam e attaccare ogni tre per due il cantiere (segue)

@12ax7 su quanto sia "conflittuale" Aurora non mi pronuncio, sui posti citati onestamente credo c'entri più una politica "no nuovi posti occupati" che quanto portavano avanti. Poi ribadisco quanto sopra: se l'Asilo portava avanti lotte così scomode non capisco perché non sgomberarlo molto prima, in 24 anni di momenti ne trovi..

Sapevo niente di tutto ciò, comunque mi sorge spontanea una domanda: a quel punto quale sarebbe stata la cosa migliore da fare?
@jones sicuramente non innamorarsi della teoria della "lotta di lunga durata che trasformerà la valsusa nel vietnam". Non poteva funzionare, non ha funzionato. Scioperi, blocchi diffusi, ecc secondo altri avrebbero potuto funzionare molto meglio, sopratutto con un'opinione pubblica a livello nazionale abbastanza simpatizzante. Si è preferito fare il giochino dell'assalto al fortino-cantiere, nel frattempo da lì è partito il tunnell vero ora si stanno facendo le opere accessorie, a Piana di Susa che già era brutta è stata devastata del tutto dal mitologico nuovo autoporto (sempre opera accessoria al Tav), si è perso, pace, teniamoci buona la vittoria del 2005 e fine. @cretinodicrescenzago @bbacc @12ax7
@cretinodicrescenzago @12ax7 indipendente nelle liste PD di un comune piuttosto importante della valle. In concorrenza, per dire, con la lista di Rifo. Assessore ai lavori pubblici. Il comune accetta le compensanzioni per l'opera (e quindi l'opera). Questo è il livello. Poco dopo si verifica il mega inciucio della morte con i 5s (a opera anche del compianto* Perino), questi fanno incetta di voti, poi si alleano con lega e tradiscono le promesse elettorali. Su di una lotta popolare che già arrancava questo ha avuto un effetto distruttivo come nulla altro. Ora la lotta No Tav è cinema fatto dai turisti che vengono al campeggio una volta l'anno.
Sono stato ultra sintetico e ho tagliato con un accetta fin troppo affilata, ma questo è in estrema sintesi il rapporto tra post autonomi e NoTav

@cretinodicrescenzago @12ax7 alcuni fin da subito hanno detto che questo metodo non poteva fungere: il fortino è imprendibile e di conseguenza è inutile concentrarsi su di esso. Contemporaneamente la post autonomia ha capito di essere davanti alla gallina dalle uova d'oro: la costruzione di una narrazione eroica intorno a quegli "assalti" al cantiere permetteva la riproduzione dell'organizzazione e la creazione di un'"egemonia culturale" sul resto del movimentume. Festa dell'alta (in)felicità (su ci sarebbe da aprire un capitolo che non aprirò) ecc ecc sono figlie di quegli anni. @lorcon vorrei dire che sono sorpreso, invece mi sento scemo a non aver mai fatto 2+2 io: da un lato l'agiografia No Tav continua a glorificare la battaglia di Chiomonte, ma nel frattempo non ci sono stati altri successi palesi, e dall'altro lato da anni a questa parte la questura di competenza permette un afflusso di turisti che da programma escala sempre in scontri – era OVVIO dedurre che tali scontri, evidentemente, sono tollerati perché totalmente inoffensivi e puro teatrino.

@cretinodicrescenzago secondo me capace che questo anno che viene li tollereranno meno per ordini da Roma. In ogni caso da anni la manifestazione fatta in occasione dell alta felicità è composta all'80% da turisti e viene caratterizzata sul tema del momento. La sostanziale sconfitta del movimento notav e ancora più il modo in cui è stato sconfitto ha rappresentato, secondo me, la chiusura di un ciclo di lotte, quello post Genova, oltre a un problema oggettivo (un coso inutile e dannoso che viene costruito). È un peccato perché è stato in certi momenti un bellissimo movimento, con tanti risvolti positivi anche sul piano umano e relazionale, ma bisogna farsene una ragione, analizzare quanto è successo e studiarlo. @bbacc @12ax7

It's all private and closed so only we 3 use it to communicate and share stories with each other!
You can just disable federation and set everything private so it becomes a little intranet for friends!

Do you view all posts on the public timeline then? I guess boosts are superfluous? And everything (replies) is set to public. I like the # function or label for organising and finding things and guess you would end up with a great database. I wanted to do this for a work brainstorming group.

@ALFA Grazie, si può dire che è un genere che ha preso a piene mani dai Black Sabbath (forse più degli altri sottogeneri) e si è evoluto da lì. All'interno dello stesso sottogenere possono esserci enormi differenze quindi inutile darne una definizione troppo precisa.

Sì tratta di provare a organizzare una conferenza per la quale non avevo grosse aspettative, mi bastava una trentina di persone, soprattutto ragazzi ma vedo che l’interesse da generare è molto più ampio e il coinvolgimento riguarda anche, se non principalmente, gli adulti.
L’obiettivo è scardinare la convinzione che sia ineluttabile dare i propri dati gratuitamente ad aziende straniere e in particolare extraeuropee, che ci sia una alternativa all’utilizzo dei principali sistemi operativi e creare massa critica.
Confesso che fino a non molto tempo fa ero molto critico nei confronti del mondo freeware ma il mutamento degli scenari geopolitici mi ha fatto notare l’arretratezza dell’Europa in questo campo e ho deciso di fare qualcosa.
Logicamente per partire ho bisogno anche io di formarmi e capire meglio.
La leva che ho a disposizione è avere la possibilità di raggiungere giovani e genitori attraverso l’associazione di cui faccio parte.
Ho visto le attività proposte da @openiteste e credo che sarebbe molto utile iniziare a collaborare assieme.

It's also important to note that if you have the option available to you, you can vote by mail. BUT, the post office is delaying postmarks by several days so if you vote by mail, get it into the mail as soon as possible. So Bannon wants to get the idea of ICE being present at polling stations into the public consciousness. The fact he chose to be the person to say it suggests his influence really has tanked even in MAGA circles. To make it happen would be a declaration of civil war…I suspect this is more about stoking the fear to get same outcome without the smoking gun.
he also admits: his definition of stealing is voting against GOP. This is the classic redifining of words, changing their meaning to ride a narrative and mass manipulate. Once this works, they can say "the sky is purple" and no one will oppose. They can say "good is bad, and bad is good", and no one will oppose.

Like on this ballpoint pen sketch on my sketchbook). Those 'honnest mistakes' due to the process itself and skill is a good "human made" signature in our times. It's not often that I paint directly from scratch with no sketch or line art, so I wanted to share this one. It's a risky technique, and I'm even eyeballing all the perspective, no grids here. I also avoid blending and smoothing, showing the brushstrokes on the canvas more clearly. I'm doing this to incorporate 'errors made naturally by humans', and I like it. It feels closer to the spontaneous style I like in my ballpoint pen sketches.

@thematic @cryptax I took this habit after applying this (gold) tutorial, that was an in-house comic 'tips and tricks' at Disney: tumblr.com/fundz64/15089762310… (page 1 shows the problems, page two the solution).
The max area size of the panel is rarely what we can fully use to express the art, character and acting. The space occupied/eaten by the text speechbubbles substracts to the full area of the panel (and usually goes on the top). That's why I prefer now to place it first.

This comic looks quite different to me than your others (also before I read your description). Less traditional cartoon-like and more painterly. Somehow even the facial features and expressions seem quite affected. Both styles are nice, but there’s a certain charm and expressiveness to this one here.
I have a couple of illustrators in my family (partner, nephew) and I'm always insisting in that, to my humble taste, the more artistic, expressive, interesting, poetic, etc., version of their draws, is that which they call drafts, sketches, etc. I understand the ideas of clean and polished, but for me the magic is mostly in that primitive or improvised phase, where the creative search is still an uncut gem, let's say... I guess, tastes. But for me, seems like live music, let's say. ❤️

I watched the video before reading your comment so I was already thinking along the lines of, "oh wow sketching with blobs of color, I wonder what the tradeoffs are vs line art".
Now I'm really curious how many different traditions of... for lack of vocabulary, "order of operations" for constructing a piece of art there are.
I would guess a lot but I'm very ignorant in this area.
@kevingranade Thank you. Your intuition is right: a lot! But the main family branches are (imho):
- Sketches/line colored then optionally painted over (the colored drawing workflow)
- Greyscale painting then recolored (the grisaille)
- Direct painting ('Alla prima' family), the one here.
I started painting this way 11 years ago ( youtube.com/watch?v=93lMLEuxSL… ) but I went back to colored drawing because I couldn't paint perspective, anatomy and pose.
Maybe now, with more skill, I can revisit.

@ifixcoinops Thank you! Yes, it approach the scene with big blocks of sort of Nintendo64 low poly resolution ( a pass named 'blocking' ), then directly on the top a paint-over with smaller brush, and layers of glazing to adjust the tones, light and shadows.

Since I read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedi… , my AI style radar went super sensitive to many things more than the em-dash and emojis in lists: Rule of three, Elegant variation, False ranges "from ... to", and more... It's everywhere, esp, companies communications/blog now.
BTW I would appreciate more misc. comics. Even in parodies AI gets tiring 😅

It is not the technology that is a threat, it is the lawless application of it.
Genuine creativity itself is hugely devalued by the art theft.

Venerdì 30 gennaio primo incontro del laboratorio Fortuitus (come è spiegato qui) ed è stata una gran bella serata: abbiamo cantato due canzonette di tempi passatissimi, siamo riusciti a goderci il testo, a dosare e utilizzare la voce in maniera adatta ed efficace, insomma, va bene, si prosegue con entusiasmo, purtroppo si deve aspettare la fine del mese per il prossimo appuntamento, il 27 febbraio: il gruppo è aperto, e può arrivare chiunque voglia fare esperienza di canto corale senza bisogno di leggere su spartito.
Alla fine di questa settimana, 8 e 9 febbraio, invece, c’è il secondo incontro di Voce e Gregoriano (come è spiegato qui), altra maniera di cantare, altro approccio alla voce: può fare paura, ma faccio di tutto per facilitare l’incontro con i melismi del gregoriano, anche per chi non sia abituato, sempre tenendo sott’occhio quel che la voce può fare o non fare, senza mai danneggiarsi.
Questo mese poi ho un concerto con Dramsam, glorioso gruppo di musica antica goriziano, per rispolverare le musiche di un compositore tra quattro e cinquecento, Petrus Hedus, laude e mottetti. Son curioso, vedremo, se ne riparla.
E poi prosegue lo studio di Venite alla danza, con LaReverdie – a marzo si registra, è il quarantennale del gruppo (io canto e suono con loro da un po’ meno, da, direi, 32 anni). Sul loro sito spiegano del nuovo progetto, c’è anche un crowdfunding, il progetto è grande, se viene supportato è una bella cosa 🙂
Insomma, lasciamo il lungo gennaio alle spalle, e si procede a lavorare, come si dice a Verona, muso duro e bareta fracà, di questi tempi c’è bisogno.
Ci vediamo in giro (o mi venite incontro, io insegno sempre nel mio studio a Verona!).

I agree 😁 I ended up on Reddit rabbit holes and documentation pages to learn some things. This user type will however not search and if they can't ask their friends or family for help, they give up.
Still, steps are taken to make this process more user friendly, which is great!
@lucien also, you have to bear in mind that when we reply to public comments, it isn't just for the benefit of the one person who commented, but for anyone else who may be lurking in the comments sections.
And: usually you have to hear about a new product a number of times before you try it out. So, many baby steps, one big goal.

@lucien Facebook users might also be more comfortable with Friendica rather than Mastodon.
Maybe collaborate with Friendica developers to get a good beginner's guide for Facebook users going?
When working on such a guide, it's always good to have the view of somebody completely new to the software like yourself.

@lucien One example I like to repeat a lot: imagine that when a channel you follow on YouTube publishes a video, you saw that publication on Twitter. And you could leave comments and give likes directly to that YouTube video from that same Twitter publication… you can do that on the Fediverse with Mastodon and PeerTube. That’s the nature of federated content using a single protocol, but sharing different content on different instances of different services.

The Fediverse has a great collection of techies creating the protocols and infrastructure. What we're missing is the folks helping regular people use it.
Hopefully folks like Hannah will start creating that layer. Not just through advocacy, but by hiring staff dedicated to helping people use it.

- Server selection onboarding. This is number one, you'll find plenty of posts online with confused users. Though Mastodon works on improving it soon it seems.
- Limited search and discovery (bottlenecked by the server)
- Broken uploads because of dead CDNs
- Confusing 'DM' feature
These all make sense to me and are ok, but casual Joe will struggle.

I read it like the person who asked wanted a silo while the EU Commission social media people answered with the actually open alternative. Like even if there were Fedi servers that allow only people verified to be EU citizens (or residents), one could still interact with all the world across servers.
It shouldn't really matter, though. The server may be EU based and only open to EU citizens to register, but it's not a "silo". It's simply one's home base. Other than server block lists implemented by the server's moderators, you can engage with anyone, anywhere, in the Fediverse.

Lately I'm not happy by much stuff EU championed, especially on the digital world but I love this! Especially because instead of trying and failing to build and push their own solution as governments tends to do they promote a grassroots movement.

I think it's just the toxic culture here. I've seen so many people driven out. There are too many self-righteous, gate-keepy people. On Bluesky, you can at least lock your replies, no wonder people feel safer there.

@MissWarcraft I think it's a combination of the fediverse attracting a more techy, less socially adept crowd, with no tools for defending against harassment and unhelpful comments.
There was a hope that at least some of it was due to Mastodon not showing all replies, so people would keep piling on, but I am not sure that was really the problem.

For good, alternatives like Mastodon remain social because they rely on recommendation rather than profit.

@pini @EUCommission it makes no sense to me why X icons are plastered all over EU websites and hardly any Mastodon icons. Glad there is a reply to a post like this the odd time, but it would be hugely more impactful if all EU institutions replaced all X icons on all official websites with Mastodon icons. Why do I get the feeling the op with the "EU citizen-only alternative" wish would end up in some wildly white supremacist instance, yaigh.
This might be a small distinction to some, but personally, I think it's a good thing that they verified the account, so that people know whether to report them for what the organization is doing versus for impersonation.
To me, a much bigger problem is that they are actually hosting that account. Why is that even necessary if Bluesky/Atmosphere is meant to be decentralized?

@Zambunny attualmente lavoriamo con un grafico e una game developer su Slam in, ma in futuro potrebbe servire manodopera in questo campo. As someone who was a true devotee of FutureWave SmartSketch (which became FutureSplash Animator, which became Macromedia Shockwave Flash, which became Adobe Flash, which became Adobe Animator) my sorrow is incalculable. Every day I long for software I had in the 90s which I can't find anything as good as today.

If you use open source software that isn't particularly popular, it might cease to exist as well. I used a "soundtracer" (a kind of synthesizer that you script in a language similar to that being used for POVray scenes) called "sapphire" over a decade ago, and then it suddenly vanished. I can't even find the source anymore, and the last time I downloaded the source a couple of years ago, I couldn't compile it because all the dependencies were outdated.
@LordCaramac Yeah, but at least then it would only take a sufficiently skilled group of people to make it work again, without _also_ needing to pay off greedy IP owners who'd rather see it rot.

You might want to look into running the software on an old linux version in a VM.
Yes an old Linux is unsupported and probably full of security holes. Don't let the vm talk to the Internet and you should be fine.

@LordCaramac The oldest liveCD I could find was Debian5 from 2009. there are 3 binaries in the tgz. all from 1998!. one is windows the other two are linux. I didn't try compiling. the binary src/sapphire maybe works? I don't know what I am looking at.

It seems to run enough to get a REPL going, but I haven't played with it yet. There's some gnarly pointer/int math going on so who knows how it'll fare in 64-bit land? 😌

You can compile 32bit if you insist. Many distributions still support it, at least on x86.
Also the way to do the global variable is you put an extern declaration in the header, and non-extern declaration in one C file.

It definitely sounds nice to play with Sapphire again. It's just a completely different sort of sound design compared to my usual synths (mostly ancient digital synths from the 1980s and 1990s).

The depth of today's software stack, even in OSS, is enormous, and nearly everything is on a mandatory-update treadmill thanks to compiler and runtime developers no longer caring about backward compatibility. And you can't just not update because everything is exposed to network-borne threats (and other stuff you want/need to run requires newer dependencies).
I've gotten saltier about this in the past 20 years.
@wollman I still haven't even updated all of my own Python code from Python 2.x to Python 3.x yet. I'll probably do it all within a single week as soon as it becomes too much of a hassle to get Python 2 to work alongside 3.

@Li Based on long familiarity with Flash and having spent over a decade thinking about this exact problem, I believe that I could represent all features of Flash within either the SVG file format or a modest extension or SVG.
However, making the tooling to edit such a file format? Making that tooling to the quality level required by art professionals?

Look more carefully at the dates. They are saying you may keep using it past the official discontinuation on 2026 March 1, but you CANNOT use it past 2027 March 1, so on that second date presumably you will lose access to your files.

I have been using OSS since the 90's. Back then it might have been true, and there are still some holes in some categories of OSS software, but I wouldn't trade my OSS software for today's closed source software even if someone else was paying for it.
Add to that: If it's open source, even a single author project, if support stops, it is still usable.
The mail client I have been using for the last 28 years has not seen any updates for 4 years. The author disappeared without a trace (probably life happened). It still works. I can still compile it. I can still fix the small issues that are annoying. I know, one day I will have to find a replacement, but today is not the day.. probably not even the year.
I know you're being rhetorical but I actually do mostly use FOSS because it's better. It's usually a lot less bloated and just does the thing it's supposed to do. That to me is better.

I wish we had copyright laws that cared about protecting consumers. Requiring corporations to put the source of their applications in escrow somehow, to be released when they end support. Something like this for electronic devices, releasing the source + requiring the ability to install custom firmware, would prevent so many of them from becoming e-waste.
any software that needs to communicate with a license server has a single point of failure. If someone’s writing code to deliberately stop their product working in a given circumstance then they are baking In unreliability and increasing support costs. There’s very few less rewarding tasks than convincing software that you’ve paid for that you’re not actually a thief.
Using Twitter as the first time that a lot of people experienced this, I have started pitching this idea as "if a petulant billionaire decides to destroy this project, how much would he need to pay?" Every point of centralization is now a massive vulnerability instead of a cost-cutting necessity, because you don't even need the petulant billionaire.
Not to undermine your point, but this strikes me as more of an open file format issue than an issue of software as such. As long as we have open file formats, we can never be locked into a vendor.

ehh…not really? Some of it is definitely better. Quite a lot of backend software is open source. Not just that either. There are a lot of instances where you use open source because it’s the best thing out there. I mean I get where you are coming from, but credit where it’s due. IBM doesn’t buy Redhat because it’s second best. Open source is under funded, under appreciated, and to a large extent out of sight, but there is real quality/talent/ideas there.

If you're able-bodied, sure. If you're not, well, too bad for ya, most OSS is terrible for accessibility especially with the typical response of, patch welcome. They're essentially asking disabled users to fix the unusable softwares themselves, completely ignoring the fact that the software isn't accessible, so how are we meant to fix it?

I dunno. I've been using *libre* software for over two decades. I enjoy it for all the reasons.
At this point, I don't know anything about proprietary software other than things like this. It seems to be more closed and restrictive than every. This shows that even the Big Name stuff becomes vaporware.
I don't really understand why anyone uses it. Find something similar, RTFM, watch some videos, and take the time to learn the workflow of the tool. It'll get the job done.
Donate money or hire a dev to work on it if you're well off enough. At least that's possible! Contribute anyway.
there should be a UN resolution dictating that any discontinued software is immediately open sourced and by default in the public domain.
