Retrotechtacular: Computers in Schools? 1979 Says Yes
The BBC wanted to show everyone how a computer might be used in schools. A program aired in 1979 asks, “Will Computers Revolutionise Education?” There’s vintage hardware and an appearance of PILOT, made for computer instructions.
Using PILOT looks suspiciously like working with a modern chatbot without as much AI noise. The French teacher in the video likes that schoolboys were practicing their French verb conjugation on the computer instead of playing football.
If you want a better look at hardware, around the five-minute mark, you see schoolkids making printed circuit boards, and some truly vintage oscilloscope close-ups. There are plenty of tiny monitors and large, noisy printing terminals.
You have to wonder where the eight-year-olds who learned about computers in the video are today, and what kind of computer they have. They learned binary and the Towers of Hanoi. Their teacher said the kids now knew more about computers than their parents did.
As a future prediction, [James Bellini] did pretty well. Like many forecasters, he almost didn’t go far enough, as we look back almost 50 years. Sure, Prestel didn’t work out as well as they thought, dying in 1994. But he shouldn’t feel bad. Predicting the future is tough. Unless, of course, you are [Arthur C. Clarke].

Measuring Earth’s Rotation with Two Gyroscopes
We’ve probably all had a few conversations with people who hold eccentric scientific ideas, and most of the time they yield nothing more than frustration and perhaps a headache. In [Bertrand Selva]’s case, however, a conversation with a flat-earth believer yielded a device that uses a pair of gyroscopes to detect earth’s rotation, demonstrating that rotation exists without the bulkiness of a Foucalt pendulum.
[Bertrand] built his apparatus around a pair of BMI160 MEMS gyroscopes, which have a least significant bit for angular velocity corresponding to 0.0038 degrees per second, while the earth rotates at 0.00416 degrees per second. To extract such a small signal from all the noise in the measurements, the device makes measurements with the sensors in four different positions to detect and eliminate the bias of the sensors and the influence of the gravitational field. Before running a test, [Bertrand] oriented the sensors toward true north, then had a stepper motor cycle the sensors through the four positions, while a Raspberry Pi Pico records 128 measurements at each position. It might run the cycle as many as 200 times, with error tending to decrease as the number of cycles increases.
A Kalman filter processes the raw data and extracts the signal, which came within two percent of the true rotational velocity. [Bertrand] found that the accuracy was strongly dependent on how well the system was aligned to true north. Indeed, the alignment effect was so strong that he could use it as a compass.
In the end, the system didn’t convince [Bertrand]’s neighbor, but it’s an impressive demonstration nonetheless. This system is a bit simpler, but it’s also possible to measure the earth’s rotation using a PlayStation. For higher precision, check out how the standards organizations manage these measurements.

A PCB Can Be A Hydrofoil, If it Really Wants To
You know those old cliche that the younger generations have begun to cynically despise: “follow your dreams!” “You can be anything you put your mind to!” — well, perhaps they are true on occasion. For instance when [rctestflight] had PCBs that dreamed of becoming a hydrofoil, he found a way to make that dream come true.
It’s kind of obvious in retrospect: printed circuit boards are made of FR4, which is a form of fiberglass, and you know what else is commonly made of fiberglass? Boats. So yes, the material is suited for this task. The fact that solder joints hold up to use in a little remote-control hydrofoil is less obvious, but good to know. It certainly makes for easier assembly for those of us who have developed an allergy to epoxy.
Ease of assembly wasn’t really the point here: the point was that by making the “mast” of the hydrofoil out of PCB– that’s the part that holds the underwater wing– [rctestflight] figured he could (shock!) print a circuit onto it. Specifically, a liquid-level sensor, and because microcontrollers are so cheap these days he went the “total overkill” route of embedding an ESP32 on each mast. He started with a resistive sensor, but since those self-corrode too quickly, the team switched to a capacitive sensor that doesn’t need to form a galvanic cell in salt water. Come to think of it, that might still be a problem with the solder joint between the PCBs. Good thing nobody will be riding this one.
Having such a sensor and brain close-coupled allows for a faster control loop than the sonar [rctestflight] had previously been using to control his hydrofoil’s altitude.. Pivoting each mast with its own servo made for a smooth flight over the water— well, once they got the PID tuning set, anyway. Check it out in the video embedded below.
We’ve seen PCB used for enclosures before, and even the chassis of a rover, but using it for a hydrofoil is a new hack.

Deep Fission Wants to put Nuclear Reactors Deep Underground
Today’s pressurized water reactors (PWRs) are marvels of nuclear fission technology that enable gigawatt-scale power stations in a very compact space. Though they are extremely safe, with only the TMI-2 accident releasing a negligible amount of radioactive isotopes into the environment per the NRC, the company Deep Fission reckons that they can make PWRs even safer by stuffing them into a 1 mile (1.6 km) deep borehole.
Their proposed DB-PWR design is currently in pre-application review at the NRC where their whitepaper and 2025-era regulatory engagement plan can be found as well. It appears that this year they renamed the reactor to Deep Fission Borehole Reactor 1 (DFBR-1). In each 30″ (76.2 cm) borehole a single 45 MWt DFBR-1 microreactor will be installed, with most of the primary loop contained within the reactor module.
As for the rationale for all of this, at the suggested depth the pressure would be equivalent to that inside the PWR, with in addition a column of water between it and the surface, which is claimed to provide a lot of safety and also negates the need for a concrete containment structure and similar PWR safety features. Of course, with the steam generator located at the bottom of the borehole, said steam has to be brought up all the way to the surface to generate a projected 15 MWe via the steam turbine, and there are also sampling tubes travelling all the way down to the primary loop in addition to ropes to haul the thing back up for replacing the standard LEU PWR fuel rods.
Whether this level of outside-the-box-thinking is a genius or absolutely daft idea remains to be seen, with it so far making inroads in the DoE’s advanced reactor program. The company targets having its first reactor online by 2026. Among its competition are projects like TerraPower’s Natrium which are already under construction and offer much more power per reactor, along with Natrium in particular also providing built-in grid-level storage.
One thing is definitely for certain, and that is that the commercial power sector in the US has stopped being mind-numbingly boring.
Microsoft Blocca il Metodo di Attivazione KMS38 per Windows 10 e 11
Gli utenti hanno notato che la scorsa settimana gli sviluppatori Microsoft hanno disattivato il metodo di attivazione offline per Windows 11 e 10 tramite KMS38, utilizzato da anni dai pirati informatici in tutto il mondo. Tuttavia, le note di rilascio ufficiali non menzionano queste modifiche.
KMS38 è stato sviluppato dagli appassionati del progetto Massgrave (MAS, Microsoft Activation Scripts), noto per il suo archivio di strumenti non ufficiali per l’attivazione di Windows e Office.
L’essenza di questo metodo di attivazione era quella di ingannare il file di sistema GatherOSstate.exe (un’utilità che determina se il sistema corrente è adatto a un aggiornamento), estendendo il periodo di attivazione del KMS (Key Management Service) dai soliti 180 giorni al 19 gennaio 2038.
L’impostazione di una data più lontana era impedita dal problema dell’anno 2038 (Y2K38).
La lotta contro KMS38 è iniziata quasi due anni fa.
I primi segnali sono comparsi da gennaio 2024, quando gatherosstate.exe è scomparso dall’immagine di installazione di Windows 26040. Questo significava che durante gli aggiornamenti e le reinstallazioni più importanti, il sistema azzerava il periodo di grazia di attivazione, costringendo l’utente a riconnettersi al server KMS.
Tuttavia, il colpo finale a KMS38 è arrivato con l’aggiornamento facoltativo di Windows 11 KB5067036, rilasciato nell’ottobre 2025. In questo aggiornamento, Microsoft ha rimosso completamente la funzionalità GatherOSstate e, dopo il Patch Tuesday di novembre (KB5068861 e KB5067112), KMS38 ha finalmente smesso di funzionare.
Gli sviluppatori di Massgrave hanno confermato che questo metodo non funziona più. Nell’ultima versione di MAS 3.8, il supporto KMS38 è stato completamente rimosso.
Massgrave consiglia agli utenti di utilizzare metodi alternativi: HWID (ID hardware) e TSforge, che funzionano comunque.
Vale la pena notare che nel 2023 è emerso che gli stessi tecnici del supporto Microsoft a volte ricorrono alle soluzioni di attivazione Windows di Massgrave.
Inoltre, è stato ripetutamente sottolineato che gli strumenti di Massgrave sono open source e che i file di progetto sono da tempo disponibili su GitHub, di proprietà di Microsoft. Tuttavia, l’azienda non intraprende alcuna azione contro i cracker.

La situazione sociosanitaria a Gaza ha superato ogni soglia di emergenza. Le evidenze più recenti, tra cui il drastico aumento dei casi di anemia grave nei bambini — che in alcuni rapporti supera l’80% nei minori di un anno — mostrano un quadro di malnutrizione acuta, collasso del sistema sanitario e rischi elevatissimi per la sopravvivenza di un’intera popolazione civile.
La combinazione di fattori critici — insicurezza alimentare estrema, scarsità di acqua potabile, interruzione dei servizi sanitari di base, sovraffollamento nei rifugi, diffusione di malattie infettive e impossibilità di accedere a cure salvavita — sta generando una crisi umanitaria senza precedenti nella regione.
Bambini, donne, anziani, persone con disabilità e malati cronici sono oggi esposti a condizioni incompatibili con la dignità umana e con i più elementari diritti alla salute e alla protezione.
Per queste ragioni, rivolgiamo un appello urgente:
1. Ai politici e alle istituzioni internazionali:
adottare misure immediate per garantire la protezione dei civili, facilitare un cessate il fuoco sostenibile e assicurare l’ingresso rapido, sicuro e senza restrizioni degli aiuti umanitari, in particolare alimenti terapeutici, farmaci essenziali, acqua potabile, carburante per le strutture sanitarie e dispositivi di emergenza.
2. Alla comunità sanitaria nazionale e internazionale:
rafforzare gli sforzi di risposta umanitaria attraverso équipe mediche, telemedicina, supporto psicologico, gestione della malnutrizione infantile, riabilitazione, monitoraggio epidemiologico e ricostruzione funzionale dei servizi primari di cura.
3. Alle organizzazioni umanitarie e alle reti professionali:
coordinare interventi basati su standard OMS per emergenze complesse, garantire continuità dell’assistenza e documentare con rigore scientifico l’impatto sanitario della crisi per orientare decisioni basate su evidenze.
Siamo di fronte a una crisi prevenibile e affrontabile, se supportata da volontà politica, interventi tempestivi e collaborazione internazionale.
La tutela della vita, della salute pubblica e della dignità umana deve essere una priorità assoluta, immediata e condivisa.

Here are the studies this week that overthrew the regime, survived outer space, smashed planets, and crafted an ancient mystery from clay.First, a queen gets sprayed with acid—and that’s not even the most horrifying part of the story. Then: a moss garden that is out of this world, the big boom that made the Moon, and a breakthrough in the history of goose-human relations.

What is this, a regime change for ants?
Every so often, a study opens with such a forceful hook that it is simply best for me to stand aside and allow it to speak for itself. Thus:
“Matricide—the killing of a mother by her own genetic offspring—is rarely observed in nature, but not unheard-of. Among animal species in which offspring remain with their mothers, the benefits gained from maternal care are so substantial that eliminating the mother almost never pays, making matricide vastly rarer than infanticide.”
“Here, we report matricidal behavior in two ant species, Lasius flavus and Lasius japonicus, where workers kill resident queens (their mothers) after the latter have been sprayed with abdominal fluid by parasitic ant queens of the ants Lasius orientalis and Lasius umbratus.”
Mad props to this team for condensing an entire etymological epic into three sentences. Such murderous acts of dynastic usurpation were first observed by Taku Shimada, an ant enthusiast who runs a blog called Ant Room. Though matricide is sometimes part of a life cycle—like mommy spiders sacrificing their bodies for consumption by their offspring—there is no clear precedent for the newly-reported form of matricide, in which neither the young nor mother benefits from an evolutionary point of view.

In what reads like an unfolding horror, the invading parasitic queens “covertly approach the resident queen and spray multiple jets of abdominal fluid at her”—formic acid, as it turns out—that then “elicits abrupt attacks by host workers, which ultimately kill their own mother,” report Shimada and his colleagues.“The parasitic queens are then accepted, receive care from the orphaned host workers and produce their own brood to found a new colony,” the team said. “Our findings are the first to document a novel host manipulation that prompts offspring to kill an otherwise indispensable mother.”
My blood is curdling and yet I cannot look away! Though this strategy is uniquely nightmarish, it is not uncommon for invading parasitic ants to execute queens in any number of creative ways. The parasites are just usually a bit more hands-on (or rather, tarsus-on) about the process.
“Queen-killing” has “evolved independently on multiple occasions across [ant species], indicating repeated evolutionary gains,” Shimada’s team said. “Until now, the only mechanistically documented solution was direct assault: the parasite throttles or beheads the host queen, a tactic that has arisen convergently in several lineages.”
When will we get an ant Shakespeare?! Someone needs to step up and claim that title, because these queens blow Lady MacBeth out of the water.

That’s one small stem for a plant, one giant leaf for plant-kind
Scientists simply love to expose extremophile life to the vacuum of space to, you know, see how well they do out there. In a new addition to this tradition, a study reports that spores from the moss Physcomitrium patens survived a full 283 days chilling on the outside of the International Space Station, which is generally not the side of an orbital habitat you want to be stuck on.

Even wilder, most of the spacefaring spores were reproductively successful upon their return to Earth. “Remarkably, even after 9 months of exposure to space conditions, over 80% of the encased spores germinated upon return to Earth,” said researchers led by Chang-hyun Maeng of Hokkaido University. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the survival of bryophytes”—the family to which mosses belong—”following exposure to space and subsequent return to the ground.”Congratulations to these mosses for boldly growing where no moss has grown before.
Hints of a real-life ghost world
Hopp, Timo et al. “The Moon-forming impactor Theia originated from the inner Solar System.” Science.Earth had barely been born before a Mars-sized planet, known as Theia, smashed into it some 4.5 billion years ago. The debris from the collision coalesced into what is now our Moon, which has played a key role in Earth’s habitability, so we owe our lives in part to this primordial punch-up.

Scientists have now revealed new details about Theia by measuring the chemical makeup of “lunar samples, terrestrial rocks, and meteorites…from which Theia and proto-Earth might have formed,” according to a new study. They conclude that Theia likely originated in the inner solar system based on the chemical signatures that this shattered world left behind on the Moon and Earth.“We found that all of Theia and most of Earth’s other constituent materials originated from the inner Solar System,” said researchers led by Timo Hopp of The University of Chicago and the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research. “Our calculations suggest that Theia might have formed closer to the Sun than Earth did.”
Wherever its actual birthplace, what remains of Theia is buried on the Moon and as giant undigested slabs inside Earth’s mantle. Rest in pieces, sister.
Goosebumps of yore
You’ve heard of the albatross around your neck, but what about the goose on your back? A new study reports the discovery of a 12,000-year-old artifact in Israel that is the “earliest known figurine to depict a human–animal interaction” with its vision of a goose mysteriously draped over a woman’s spine and shoulders.
The tiny, inch-high figurine was recovered from a settlement built by the prehistoric Natufian culture and it may represent some kind of sex thing.

“We…suggest that by modeling a goose in this specific posture, the Natufian manufacturer intended to portray the trademark pattern of the gander’s mating behavior,” said researchers led by Laurent Davin of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. “This kind of imagined mating between humans and animal spirits is typical of an animistic perspective, documented in cross-cultural archaeological and ethnographic records in specific situations” such as an “erotic dream” or “shamanistic vision.”First, the bizarre Greek myth of Leda and the Swan, and now this? What is it about ancient cultures and weird waterfowl fantasies? In any case, my own interpretation is that the goose was just tired and needed a piggyback (or gaggle-back).

Lo stop ordinato, e ottenuto, dal Ppe non solo getta l’istituzione europea di nuovo nell’imbarazzo e fa gridare opposizioni, ma non solo, al servilismo dell’Ue nei confronti di alcuni governi, ma rappresenta il terzo punto di rottura all’interno della maggioranza Ursula, con i Popolari che per la terza volta usano le destre per far passare le proprie posizioni.

L'amas ouvert des Pléiades, M45
Les Pléiades, M45, est un amas dominé par des étoiles bleues chaudes et lumineuses qui se sont formées au cours des 100 derniers millions d'années. Il est situé dans le constellation du Taureau. À une distance d'environ 444 années-lumière, il fait partie des amas d'étoiles les plus proches de la Terre. Il fait 8 années-lumière de diamètre et se caractérise par la poussière spatiale enveloppante illuminée par les étoiles.
Les soleils les plus brillants sont: Alcyone, Atlas, Electre, Maia, Mérope, Taygeta, Pléione, Celaeno et Astérope.
On pensait autrefois que les nébuleuses de réflexion autour des étoiles les plus brillantes restaient du matériel de leur formation, mais sont maintenant considérées comme susceptibles d'être un nuage de poussière sans rapport avec le milieu interstellaire à travers lequel les étoiles passent actuellement. On estime que ce nuage de poussière se déplace à une vitesse d'environ 18 km/s par rapport aux étoiles de l'amas.
Des simulations informatiques ont montré que les Pléiades étaient probablement formées à partir d'une configuration compacte qui ressemblait à la nébuleuse d'Orion. Les astronomes estiment que l'amas survivra encore environ 250 millions d'années, après quoi il se dispersera en raison des interactions gravitationnelles avec son voisinage galactique.
L'amas contient plus de 3000 membres confirmés, un chiffre qui exclut un nombre supplémentaire probable non résolu d'étoiles binaires. Sa lumière est dominée par de jeunes étoiles bleues chaudes, dont jusqu'à 14 peuvent être vues à l'œil nu.
La masse totale contenue dans l'amas est estimée à environ 800 masses solaires et est dominée par des étoiles plus faibles et plus rouges.
Une estimation de la fréquence des étoiles binaires dans les Pléiades est d'environ 57%.

En analysant des images dans l'infrarouge profond obtenues par le télescope spatial Spitzer et le télescope Gemini North, les astronomes ont découvert que l'une des étoiles de l'amas, HD 23514, qui a une masse et une luminosité légèrement supérieures à celles du Soleil, est entourée d'un nombre extraordinaire de particules de poussière chaudes. Cela pourrait être une preuve de la formation de planètes autour de HD 23514.

Journalist-hating president kisses up to journalist-killing crown prince
President Donald Trump shamefully welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House this week. He brushed aside questions about Crown Prince Mohammed’s role in the gruesome 2018 murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, commenting that “things happen” and “You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.”
Freedom of the Press foundation (FPF) Director of Advocacy Seth Stern remarked:
“Somehow calling a female reporter ‘piggy’ was only the second-most offensive anti-press utterance to come out of the president’s mouth in recent days. And somehow Biden’s infamous fist bump is now only the second-most disgusting public display of flattery by a U.S. president to journalist-murderer Mohammed bin Salman.”
DHS targets journalists for speaking out about Gaza
Texas journalist Ya’akub Ira Vijandre and British journalist and commentator Sami Hamdi are the two latest examples of the Department of Homeland Security targeting journalists.
Hamdi self-deported to England after 18 days enduring inhumane conditions in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Vijandre, a Filipino American Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient who has lived in the U.S. since 2021, remains in custody as he awaits deportation proceedings.
Hamdi and his wife, Soumaya, joined us for an online event this week alongside attorneys and friends of both Hamdi and Vijandre. As Hamdi said, “If the American public finds out the realities of what’s happening, ICE will be dismantled in an instant.”
A $50 lesson in press freedom
Prosecutors in Kentucky have finally dropped charges against journalist Madeline Fening, who was arrested while covering a July protest on the Roebling Bridge for CityBeat.
But, as Stern wrote in an op-ed for CityBeat, the damage is already done. Kenton County drew condemnation from civil liberties advocates across the country and sacrificed any credibility it had when it came respecting First Amendment rights — and all to recover a combined grand total of $50 from Fening and her colleague, Lucas Griffith.
Journalists targeted at Oregon protests
You’ve probably seen the inflatable frogs, the dance parties, the naked bike ride. Maybe you’ve also seen the darker images: a federal officer aiming a weapon at protesters, or federal agents hurling tear gas and flash bangs into peaceful demonstrations at a Portland, Oregon, immigration facility.

Court suspends journalist injunction in Chicago
A judicial order won by Chicago area journalists that limited protest policing tactics by federal law enforcement was put on hold this week, with a federal appellate court calling the order overbroad.
As Stern told FPF’s U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, “It is difficult to understand how it is overbroad to ‘enjoin all law enforcement officers within the Executive Branch’ when the president, who last I checked runs the executive branch, expressly demands that those under him brutalize, censor and arrest activists and journalists who interfere with their narrative — the exact conduct restricted by the injunction.”
Immigration agents claim routine reporting violates federal law
Independent news outlet Status Coup reported Wednesday that federal immigration agents threatened its reporter, Jon Farina, with arrest for following and filming them, despite well-established First Amendment protections.
Stern said in a statement, “It looks like these officers believe transparency itself is obstructive to their operations, which is a pretty good indicator that their operations are in need of obstruction. The First Amendment is intended to obstruct government abuses. … If they’re too thin-skinned for the public scrutiny that comes with being a part of that, they can go find a job that doesn’t involve abducting people for an authoritarian regime.”

Sam’s piece on an exposed AI porn platform ended up with the company closing off those exposed images. Our months-long reporting and pressure from lawmakers led to the closure of the Travel Intelligence Program (TIP), in which a company owned by the U.S.’s major airlines sold flyers data to the government for warrantless surveillance.
For the quick bit of context I have typed many, many times this year: that company is Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), and is owned by United, American, Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Lufthansa, Air France, and Air Canada. ARC gets data, including a traveler’s name, credit card used, where they’re flying to and from, whenever someone books a flight with one of more than 10,000 travel agencies. Think Expedia, especially. ARC then sells access to that data to a slew of government agencies, including ICE, the FBI, the SEC, the State Department, ATF, and more.
