Why Do We Love Weird Old Tech?
One of our newer writers, [Tyler August], recently wrote a love letter to plasma TV technology. Sitting between the ubiquitous LCD and the vanishing CRT, the plasma TV had its moment in the sun, but never became quite as popular as either of the other display techs, for all sorts of reasons. By all means, go read his article if you’re interested in the details. I’ll freely admit that it had me thinking that I needed a plasma TV.
I don’t, of course. But why do I, and probably a bunch of you out there, like old and/or odd tech? Take [Tyler]’s plasma fetish, for instance, or many people’s love for VFD or nixie tube displays. At Supercon, a number of people had hit up Apex Electronics, a local surplus store, and came away with some sweet old LED character displays. And I’ll admit to having two handfuls of these displays in my to-hack-on drawer that I bought surplus a decade ago because they’re so cute.
It’s not nostalgia. [Tyler] never had a plasma growing up, and those LED displays were already obsolete before the gang of folks who had bought them were even born. And it’s not simply that it’s old junk – the objects of our desire were mostly all reasonably fancy tech back in their day. And I think that’s part of the key.
My theory is that, as time and tech progresses, we see these truly amazing new developments become commonplace, and get forgotten by virtue of their ever-presence. For a while, having a glowing character display in your car stereo would have been truly futuristic, and then when the VFD went mainstream, it kind of faded into our ambient technological background noise. But now that we all have high-res entertainment consoles in our cars, which are frankly basically just a cheap tablet computer (see what I did there?), the VFD becomes an object of wonder again because it’s rare.
Which is not to say that LCD displays are anything short of amazing. Count up the rows and columns of pixels, and multiply by three for RGB, and that’s how many nanoscale ITO traces there are on the screen of even the cheapest display these days. But we take it for granted because we are surrounded by cheap screens.
I think we like older, odder tech because we see it more easily for the wonder that it is because it’s no longer commonplace. But that doesn’t mean that our current “boring” tech is any less impressive. Maybe the moral of the story is to try to approach and appreciate what we’ve got now with new eyes. Pretend you’re coming in from the future and finding this “old” gear. Maybe try to figure out how it must have worked.

What is this, a regime change for ants?
Every so often, a study opens with such a forceful hook that it is simply best for me to stand aside and allow it to speak for itself. Thus:
“Matricide—the killing of a mother by her own genetic offspring—is rarely observed in nature, but not unheard-of. Among animal species in which offspring remain with their mothers, the benefits gained from maternal care are so substantial that eliminating the mother almost never pays, making matricide vastly rarer than infanticide.”
“Here, we report matricidal behavior in two ant species, Lasius flavus and Lasius japonicus, where workers kill resident queens (their mothers) after the latter have been sprayed with abdominal fluid by parasitic ant queens of the ants Lasius orientalis and Lasius umbratus.”
Mad props to this team for condensing an entire etymological epic into three sentences. Such murderous acts of dynastic usurpation were first observed by Taku Shimada, an ant enthusiast who runs a blog called Ant Room. Though matricide is sometimes part of a life cycle—like mommy spiders sacrificing their bodies for consumption by their offspring—there is no clear precedent for the newly-reported form of matricide, in which neither the young nor mother benefits from an evolutionary point of view.

In what reads like an unfolding horror, the invading parasitic queens “covertly approach the resident queen and spray multiple jets of abdominal fluid at her”—formic acid, as it turns out—that then “elicits abrupt attacks by host workers, which ultimately kill their own mother,” report Shimada and his colleagues.“The parasitic queens are then accepted, receive care from the orphaned host workers and produce their own brood to found a new colony,” the team said. “Our findings are the first to document a novel host manipulation that prompts offspring to kill an otherwise indispensable mother.”
My blood is curdling and yet I cannot look away! Though this strategy is uniquely nightmarish, it is not uncommon for invading parasitic ants to execute queens in any number of creative ways. The parasites are just usually a bit more hands-on (or rather, tarsus-on) about the process.
“Queen-killing” has “evolved independently on multiple occasions across [ant species], indicating repeated evolutionary gains,” Shimada’s team said. “Until now, the only mechanistically documented solution was direct assault: the parasite throttles or beheads the host queen, a tactic that has arisen convergently in several lineages.”
When will we get an ant Shakespeare?! Someone needs to step up and claim that title, because these queens blow Lady MacBeth out of the water.

That’s one small stem for a plant, one giant leaf for plant-kind
Scientists simply love to expose extremophile life to the vacuum of space to, you know, see how well they do out there. In a new addition to this tradition, a study reports that spores from the moss Physcomitrium patens survived a full 283 days chilling on the outside of the International Space Station, which is generally not the side of an orbital habitat you want to be stuck on.

Even wilder, most of the spacefaring spores were reproductively successful upon their return to Earth. “Remarkably, even after 9 months of exposure to space conditions, over 80% of the encased spores germinated upon return to Earth,” said researchers led by Chang-hyun Maeng of Hokkaido University. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the survival of bryophytes”—the family to which mosses belong—”following exposure to space and subsequent return to the ground.”Congratulations to these mosses for boldly growing where no moss has grown before.
Hints of a real-life ghost world
Hopp, Timo et al. “The Moon-forming impactor Theia originated from the inner Solar System.” Science.Earth had barely been born before a Mars-sized planet, known as Theia, smashed into it some 4.5 billion years ago. The debris from the collision coalesced into what is now our Moon, which has played a key role in Earth’s habitability, so we owe our lives in part to this primordial punch-up.

Scientists have now revealed new details about Theia by measuring the chemical makeup of “lunar samples, terrestrial rocks, and meteorites…from which Theia and proto-Earth might have formed,” according to a new study. They conclude that Theia likely originated in the inner solar system based on the chemical signatures that this shattered world left behind on the Moon and Earth.“We found that all of Theia and most of Earth’s other constituent materials originated from the inner Solar System,” said researchers led by Timo Hopp of The University of Chicago and the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research. “Our calculations suggest that Theia might have formed closer to the Sun than Earth did.”
Wherever its actual birthplace, what remains of Theia is buried on the Moon and as giant undigested slabs inside Earth’s mantle. Rest in pieces, sister.
Goosebumps of yore
You’ve heard of the albatross around your neck, but what about the goose on your back? A new study reports the discovery of a 12,000-year-old artifact in Israel that is the “earliest known figurine to depict a human–animal interaction” with its vision of a goose mysteriously draped over a woman’s spine and shoulders.
The tiny, inch-high figurine was recovered from a settlement built by the prehistoric Natufian culture and it may represent some kind of sex thing.

“We…suggest that by modeling a goose in this specific posture, the Natufian manufacturer intended to portray the trademark pattern of the gander’s mating behavior,” said researchers led by Laurent Davin of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. “This kind of imagined mating between humans and animal spirits is typical of an animistic perspective, documented in cross-cultural archaeological and ethnographic records in specific situations” such as an “erotic dream” or “shamanistic vision.”First, the bizarre Greek myth of Leda and the Swan, and now this? What is it about ancient cultures and weird waterfowl fantasies? In any case, my own interpretation is that the goose was just tired and needed a piggyback (or gaggle-back).

Il Peregreen 3 sperimentale ha raggiunto una velocità di 360,4 miglia orarie (circa 580 chilometri orari), battendo un record che resisteva da un anno.
All’epoca, solo i partecipanti al test ne erano a conoscenza, ma il 18 novembre, il blogger di YouTube Luke Maxima Bell ha finalmente rivelato il progetto e condiviso il filmato del volo. Il Guinness dei Primati ha confermato il risultato come nuovo record mondiale per quadricotteri elettrici telecomandati. Il record precedente, 350 chilometri orari, era ormai detenuto da un team svizzero.
La parte più interessante di questa storia non è solo la figura finale, ma anche il percorso intrapreso da Bell e suo padre per arrivarci. Il lavoro è iniziato in un normale garage. Luke e Mike hanno installato diverse stampanti 3D e le hanno utilizzate per creare un telaio sottile e curvo, perfezionandone l’aerodinamica quasi a mano. Hanno potuto stampare, assemblare e testare ogni nuova forma sul posto.
Grazie a questo, il quadricottero si è evoluto da un’iterazione all’altra letteralmente in giorni, non settimane.
Al centro di questo successo c’era una grande batteria ai polimeri di litio, che forniva una lunga accelerazione. Da essa si estendevano quattro bracci, ciascuno con un motore che faceva girare le eliche così velocemente che le pale scomparivano in un anello traslucido.
Il controllo avveniva tramite un telecomando con un proprio firmware: non c’era praticamente alcun ritardo, permettendo a Luke di regolare la traiettoria letteralmente al volo. Mike monitorava la telemetria: tensione, temperatura e prestazioni della batteria. Per garantire l’affidabilità, costruirono una propria protezione elettronica per impedire al velivolo di perdere il controllo in caso di un improvviso aumento di carico.
Un passaggio cruciale è stato l’accesso a un lungo tratto di spazio aereo desertico, fornito dalla Dubai Unmanned Aerial Systems. Qui, il team ha potuto lanciare ripetutamente prototipi senza disturbare nessuno nelle vicinanze.
Ma il calore ha rapidamente messo in luce i punti deboli del progetto. A temperature superiori a 43 °C, la portanza diminuiva e i motori si surriscaldavano a tal punto da perdere il loro aggancio magnetico.
Ciò ha portato a sbilanciamenti e incidenti. Dopo ogni guasto, il progetto è stato migliorato: sono stati installati motori resistenti al calore, sono state aggiunte alette di raffreddamento stampate, i montanti sono stati rinforzati e sono stati introdotti dei limitatori nel software.
Al sesto prototipo, il team aveva già un assetto funzionante. I lanci venivano effettuati all’alba, prima che l’aria si riscaldasse.
Dopo ogni volo, analizzavano i registri e tornavano con una versione aggiornata. Luke percorreva la linea di accelerazione prima del decollo per valutare la direzione del vento, e Mike sostituiva le batterie con la precisione di un meccanico di gara.
Il 22 giugno, tutto andò alla perfezione. Il Peregreen 3 si alzò dolcemente, entrò in linea retta e iniziò ad accelerare. A bordo era presente un modulo GPS che registrava ogni secondo del volo. Furono posizionati dei marcatori a terra e i rappresentanti del Guinness monitorarono la procedura. Il quadricottero rimase stabile per tutto il volo e raggiunse una velocità di 360,4 miglia orarie, un traguardo a cui il team lavorava da mesi.
Non si è trattato solo di un volo veloce: è stato il risultato di centinaia di riparazioni , decine di incidenti e della tenacia di due persone che hanno deciso di poter costruire un aereo da record in un garage.

Baby’s First Synth was Daddy’s First Project
We absolutely adore inspired labor-of-love tales such as this one. [Alastair] wanted to build a synth for his daughter’s third birthday in spite of having no prior hardware knowledge. It became the perfect excuse to learn about CAD, microcontrollers, PCB design, and of course, 3D printing.
So, why a synth for a toddler? Aside from plain old ‘why not?’, the story goes that she received a Montessori busy-type board which she seemed to enjoy, and it reminded [Alastair] of the control surface of a synth. He wondered how hard it could be to build something similar that made sound and didn’t require constant button presses.
[Alastair] began his journey by dusting off a 15-year-old Arduino Inventors Kit. The initial goal was to get potentiometer readings and map them to 12 discrete values, and then emit MIDI messages. This was easy enough, and it was time to move to a synth module and an Elegoo Nano.

It’s Hard to Make a (Good) Oscillator
There’s more to making an oscillator than meets the eye, and [lcamtuf] is here with a good primer on the subject. It starts with the old joke that if you need an oscillator it’s best to try to make an amplifier instead, but of course the real point here is to learn how to make not just a mere oscillator, but a good oscillator.
He does this by taking the oscillator back to first principles and explaining positive feedback on an amplifier, before introducing the Schmitt trigger, an RC circuit to induce a delay, and then phase shift. These oscillators are not complex circuits by any means, so understanding their principles should allow you to unlock the secrets of oscillation in a less haphazard way than just plugging in values and hoping.

Oracle sotto attacco: scoperta una vulnerabilità RCE pre-auth che compromette interi sistemi
Una vulnerabilità, contrassegnata come CVE-2025-61757, è stata resa pubblica Searchlight Cyber giovedì scorso. I ricercatori dell’azienda hanno individuato il problema e hanno informato Oracle, che ha portato alla sua divulgazione.
Oracle ha corretto CVE-2025-61757 con le patch di ottobre 2025 e ha confermato che si tratta di un problema critico che può essere facilmente sfruttato senza autenticazione.
L’azienda di sicurezza l’ha descritta come una vulnerabilità critica di esecuzione di codice remoto pre-autenticazione in Oracle Identity Manager. L’exploit, che concatena una vulnerabilità di bypass dell’autenticazione e l’esecuzione di codice arbitrario, può consentire a un aggressore di compromettere completamente il sistema.
Searchlight Cyber ha avvertito giovedì che la vulnerabilità può “consentire agli aggressori di manipolare i flussi di autenticazione, aumentare i privilegi e muoversi lateralmente nei sistemi principali di un’organizzazione”, sottolineando che può “portare alla violazione dei server che gestiscono le informazioni personali identificabili (PII) e le credenziali degli utenti”.
“Ci sono diversi IP che stanno scansionando attivamente il bug, ma tutti utilizzano lo stesso user agent, il che suggerisce che potremmo avere a che fare con un singolo aggressore”, ha spiegato Ullrich. “Purtroppo non abbiamo catturato i corpi per queste richieste, ma erano tutte richieste POST”, ha aggiunto.
Il SANS Technology Institute ha utilizzato le informazioni tecniche e il codice PoC resi pubblici da Searchlight giovedì per controllare i propri registri honeypot alla ricerca di segnali di potenziale sfruttamento .
Secondo Johannes Ullrich di SANS, possibili casi di sfruttamento sono stati osservati più volte tra il 30 agosto e il 9 settembre, settimane prima che Oracle rilasciasse una patch.
L’esperto ha affermato che gli stessi indirizzi IP erano stati precedentemente visti mentre scansionavano il web alla ricerca di una vulnerabilità del prodotto Liferay (CVE-2025-4581) e conducevano scansioni che sembrano essere associate a bug bounty.

Il messaggio è arrivato chiaro anche al Parlamento europeo, tanto che con un blitz in Conferenza dei presidenti il capogruppo e presidente del Partito Popolare Europeo, Manfred Weber, ha chiesto e ottenuto, con l’aiuto dell’estrema destra, il blocco di una missione in Italia dell’Eurocamera con focus sullo stato di diritto, la libertà di stampa e la giustizia.
Lo stop ordinato, e ottenuto, dal Ppe non solo getta l’istituzione europea di nuovo nell’imbarazzo e fa gridare opposizioni, ma non solo, al servilismo dell’Ue nei confronti di alcuni governi, ma rappresenta il terzo punto di rottura all’interno della maggioranza Ursula, con i Popolari che per la terza volta usano le destre per far passare le proprie posizioni.

L'amas ouvert des Pléiades, M45
Les Pléiades, M45, est un amas dominé par des étoiles bleues chaudes et lumineuses qui se sont formées au cours des 100 derniers millions d'années. Il est situé dans le constellation du Taureau. À une distance d'environ 444 années-lumière, il fait partie des amas d'étoiles les plus proches de la Terre. Il fait 8 années-lumière de diamètre et se caractérise par la poussière spatiale enveloppante illuminée par les étoiles.
Les soleils les plus brillants sont: Alcyone, Atlas, Electre, Maia, Mérope, Taygeta, Pléione, Celaeno et Astérope.
On pensait autrefois que les nébuleuses de réflexion autour des étoiles les plus brillantes restaient du matériel de leur formation, mais sont maintenant considérées comme susceptibles d'être un nuage de poussière sans rapport avec le milieu interstellaire à travers lequel les étoiles passent actuellement. On estime que ce nuage de poussière se déplace à une vitesse d'environ 18 km/s par rapport aux étoiles de l'amas.
Des simulations informatiques ont montré que les Pléiades étaient probablement formées à partir d'une configuration compacte qui ressemblait à la nébuleuse d'Orion. Les astronomes estiment que l'amas survivra encore environ 250 millions d'années, après quoi il se dispersera en raison des interactions gravitationnelles avec son voisinage galactique.
L'amas contient plus de 3000 membres confirmés, un chiffre qui exclut un nombre supplémentaire probable non résolu d'étoiles binaires. Sa lumière est dominée par de jeunes étoiles bleues chaudes, dont jusqu'à 14 peuvent être vues à l'œil nu.
La masse totale contenue dans l'amas est estimée à environ 800 masses solaires et est dominée par des étoiles plus faibles et plus rouges.
Une estimation de la fréquence des étoiles binaires dans les Pléiades est d'environ 57%.

En analysant des images dans l'infrarouge profond obtenues par le télescope spatial Spitzer et le télescope Gemini North, les astronomes ont découvert que l'une des étoiles de l'amas, HD 23514, qui a une masse et une luminosité légèrement supérieures à celles du Soleil, est entourée d'un nombre extraordinaire de particules de poussière chaudes. Cela pourrait être une preuve de la formation de planètes autour de HD 23514.

Journalist-hating president kisses up to journalist-killing crown prince
President Donald Trump shamefully welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House this week. He brushed aside questions about Crown Prince Mohammed’s role in the gruesome 2018 murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, commenting that “things happen” and “You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.”
Freedom of the Press foundation (FPF) Director of Advocacy Seth Stern remarked:
“Somehow calling a female reporter ‘piggy’ was only the second-most offensive anti-press utterance to come out of the president’s mouth in recent days. And somehow Biden’s infamous fist bump is now only the second-most disgusting public display of flattery by a U.S. president to journalist-murderer Mohammed bin Salman.”
DHS targets journalists for speaking out about Gaza
Texas journalist Ya’akub Ira Vijandre and British journalist and commentator Sami Hamdi are the two latest examples of the Department of Homeland Security targeting journalists.
Hamdi self-deported to England after 18 days enduring inhumane conditions in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Vijandre, a Filipino American Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient who has lived in the U.S. since 2021, remains in custody as he awaits deportation proceedings.
Hamdi and his wife, Soumaya, joined us for an online event this week alongside attorneys and friends of both Hamdi and Vijandre. As Hamdi said, “If the American public finds out the realities of what’s happening, ICE will be dismantled in an instant.”

Court suspends journalist injunction in Chicago
A judicial order won by Chicago area journalists that limited protest policing tactics by federal law enforcement was put on hold this week, with a federal appellate court calling the order overbroad.

Immigration agents claim routine reporting violates federal law
Independent news outlet Status Coup reported Wednesday that federal immigration agents threatened its reporter, Jon Farina, with arrest for following and filming them, despite well-established First Amendment protections.
Stern said in a statement, “It looks like these officers believe transparency itself is obstructive to their operations, which is a pretty good indicator that their operations are in need of obstruction. For the quick bit of context I have typed many, many times this year: that company is Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), and is owned by United, American, Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Lufthansa, Air France, and Air Canada. ARC gets data, including a traveler’s name, credit card used, where they’re flying to and from, whenever someone books a flight with one of more than 10,000 travel agencies. Think Expedia, especially. ARC then sells access to that data to a slew of government agencies, including ICE, the FBI, the SEC, the State Department, ATF, and more.

Nel secondo anniversario della morte di Sibilla Barbieri, avvenuta in Svizzera, la Procura della Repubblica di Roma ha notificato all’avvocata Filomena Gallo, difensore degli indagati Marco Cappato, Vittorio Parpaglioni e Marco Perduca, l’avviso di richiesta di archiviazione per l’autodenuncia presentata dai tre dopo aver aiutato la regista romana ad accedere alla morte assistita volontaria.La richiesta di archiviazione riguarda l’ipotesi di “aiuto al suicidio”, in seguito all’iniziativa dei tre esponenti dell’Associazione Luca Coscioni, che avevano accompagnato Sibilla Barbieri in Svizzera nel 2023, dopo il rifiuto della ASL 1 di Roma di autorizzare la procedura in Italia. Spetterà ora al giudice per le indagini preliminari (GIP) decidere se accogliere la richiesta della Procura o disporre un’udienza per valutare un’eventuale imputazione coatta. Solo dopo la pubblicazione delle motivazioni del Pubblico Ministero sarà possibile comprendere le basi giuridiche della richiesta di archiviazione.
E così via.
Gli esempi citati sono di richieste di archiviazione da parte di chi rappresenta l’accusa nel processo penale in Italia. È un fenomeno molto frequente: il 64% (quasi 2 su tre) dei procedimenti che escono dalle procure dopo la fine delle indagini preliminari non va a giudizio ma viene archiviato.
Ciò che caratterizza l’accusatore italiano così spesso descritto come un mastino, è in realtà una prima importante funzione di garanzia per l’Imputato. Se non convinto della colpevolezza l’accusatore, [il pubblico ministero (P.M.)] la cui carriera si vuole ora separare da quella dei giudici, è libero di chiedere il proscioglimento e spesso lo fa, proprio perché la cultura in cui si è formato ed opera è quella di capire come sono davvero andate le cose. Non di ottenere una condanna.
In altre parole, nell’ordinamento attuale e salvo eccezioni che sempre esistono, il P.M. prima di esser un accusatore è un magistrato che cerca di capire. Perdere tale cultura e formazione non farà bene alla giustizia. E soprattutto se il P.M. divenisse dipendente dagli indirizzi governativi (p.es su temi come i diritti civili perseguiti negli esempi) potrebbe trovarsi in difficoltà a chiedere un’archiviazione qualora lo ritenesse necessario.
Il Ministro Nordio afferma che finché ci sarà lui come Ministro della Giustizia, questo rischio di riduzione dell’indipendenza del P.M. non si porrà. E bisogna credergli. Ma una volta scardinate le funzioni di garanzia affidate agli accusatori dalla Costituzione e protette dai complessi meccanismi di revisione della Carta costituzionale, la graduale sottoposizione di quei magistrati accusatori al Governo potrebbe facilmente diventare possibile con leggi ordinarie, votabili dal Parlamento in seduta singola da semplici maggioranze parlamentari del 51% su indicazione di qualunque futuro Presidente del Consiglio e/o Ministro della Giustizia.
Per ammissione degli stessi proponenti, la legge 253 del 30 ottobre 2025 sulla separazione delle carriere poco o nulla contribuirà a rendere la giustizia più efficace e veloce. Cosa questa sì, più che mai urgente per noi tutti. Visto che una giustizia che arriva tardi non è mai vera giustizia.
Le misure per ottenerla sono note e richieste da anni a tutti i governi ma da nessuno di questi ultimi mai messe in opera come si dovrebbe. Suggerendo ciò che una giustizia rapida ed efficace interessa a (troppo) pochi.
- Piante organiche a completamento (magistrati, cancellieri e personale amministrativo)
- Ambienti (Uffici, Aule) adeguati
- Strumenti informatici adeguati, sottoposti a manutenzione regolare ed interventi tecnici tempestivi
- Più multe e misure alternative, meno carcere
- Condizioni carcerarie adeguate ad un paese civile
- Residenze per l’Esecuzione delle Misure di Sicurezza (REMS) adeguate ad un paese civile
- Limite ad accusa e difesa di parole scritte per tipologia di reato e posizione esaminata
- Limite ad accusa e difesa di tempo di arringa per tipologia di reato e posizione esaminata
- Limite ad accusa e difesa della possibilità di impugnazione ai soli casi più gravi (con pene previste più alte), rendendo le decisioni di primo grado subito definitive per quelli meno gravi (con pene previste più basse)
Senza fare questo, la velocità dei processi non cambierà e la separazione dei P.M. dai giudici non farà altro che diminuire le garanzie per i cittadini. Per questo io voterò NO al referendum confermativo.

Why Chat Scanning Is a Problem Hiding in Your Phone
Across Europe, a new concept known as chat scanning has entered the public debate. Supporters claim it will protect children from online harm. Chat control is formally part of the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation (CSAR), aimed at combating CSAM (child sexual abuse material). However, many experts, privacy groups, and digital rights advocates warn that it poses a greater risk for everyone who uses a phone, especially young people who message daily.
What is chat scanning?
In simple terms, it is a system that checks your private messages before or as soon as you send them. The app you use would need to scan your texts, photos, or videos and determine whether they seem suspicious. If the scanner thinks something is “unsafe,” it can report the sender, even if the message was completely innocent.
This means the scanning occurs within your phone, not on a server elsewhere. Every typed or uploaded message is checked before it reaches a friend or family member. It is like having a digital security guard watching over your shoulder every time you write something personal.
For digital rights advocates, including the Pirate Party, this raises a serious concern: privacy is not something that can be switched on and off. Once a system is built to monitor everyone’s conversations, it becomes a permanent gateway to surveillance. It does not take much for such tools to be expanded, misused, or accessed by actors who do not have the public’s interest at heart.
Why Chat Control Is a Real Threat
Chat control systems are not theoretical risks. Automated scanners genuinely make mistakes. They often cannot understand teenage slang, humour, or personal images. A tool meant to protect vulnerable users can easily turn into one that falsely accuses innocent people. Meanwhile, determined bad actors can simply switch to apps that do not follow these rules, while ordinary citizens remain under constant monitoring.
This approach also weakens secure communication. End-to-end encryption is designed to protect everyone from hackers, identity theft, and even misuse of state power. Scanning messages before they are encrypted breaks that protection. Instead of keeping society safe, it exposes activists, families, journalists, and children to new dangers.
The Ripple Effect on Democracy
If chat controls become law with a full majority, the long-term consequences could spread slowly but deeply. The ripple effect would impact multiple pillars of democracy.
Privacy Erosion
What begins as limited scanning to target harmful content can gradually expand to include most users. When every message is subject to scrutiny, personal privacy is the first casualty.
Overwhelmed Law Enforcement
A flood of false positives would strain police resources. German experts who reviewed the proposal warned that law enforcement would be unable to handle the volume of inaccurate reports. This waste of time and energy increases the risk of people being wrongly investigated or prosecuted, ultimately making the public less safe.
Chilling of Free Expression
Journalists, activists, and vulnerable groups may start to self-censor because they no longer trust their communication channels. When private conversations feel monitored, open dialogue becomes rare.
Decline in Civic Participation
As trust in institutions weakens, people may disengage from democratic processes. Press freedom declines, and political debate becomes less open.
Shift in Social Norms
Over time, society may begin to accept the idea that monitoring private digital spaces is normal. Such a shift can alter the social contract itself, making surveillance an everyday expectation rather than an exception.
This is how a policy introduced in the name of protection can gradually erode the foundations of democracy.
Are there safer alternatives?
There are better ways to keep communities safe. Targeted investigations, stronger reporting channels, improved child protection services, and investment in digital literacy can genuinely support vulnerable groups without breaking the fundamental right to private communication.
Europe should not accept a future where every phone becomes a checkpoint. Safety should be built on rights, not surveillance. Protecting children and protecting privacy are not opposing goals. With smart policy and responsible technology, the EU can and must do both.
