Benchmarking Windows Against Itself, from Windows XP to Windows 11
Despite faster CPUs, RAM and storage, today’s Windows experience doesn’t feel noticeably different from back in the 2000s when XP and later Windows 7 ruled the roost. To quantify this feeling, [TrigrZolt] decided to run a series of benchmarks on a range of Windows versions.
Covering Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.1, 10 and 11, the Pro version of each with the latest service packs and updates was installed on the same laptop: a Lenovo ThinkPad X220. It features an Intel i5 2520M CPU, 8 GB of RAM, built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000 and a 256 GB HDD.
For start-up, Windows 8.1 won the race, probably due to having the Fast Boot feature, while Windows 11 came in dead last as it showed the desktop, but struggled to show the task bar. Windows XP’s install size was the smallest and also had the lowest RAM usage with nothing loaded at 800 MB versus 3.3 GB for Windows 11 in last place.
Using the Chrome-based Supermium browser, memory management was tested, with XP performing as poorly as Windows 11, while Windows 7 and 8.1 took home the gold at over two-hundred tabs open before hitting the total RAM usage limit of 5 GB. That XP performed so poorly was however due to an issue with virtual memory and not hitting the RAM limit, which means that Windows 11 is the real dunce here.
This is a pattern that keeps repeating: Windows 11 was last in the battery test, took longer to render a video project in OpenShot, took its sweet time opening the File Explorer window, and opening built-in applications like MS Paint left enough time to fetch a fresh cup of coffee. Not to mention Windows 11 taking the longest to open websites and scoring worst of all in single-threaded CPU-Z.
Much seems to be due to the new code in Windows 11, as Microsoft has opted to start doing major rewrites since Windows 7, hitting a crescendo with Windows 11. Although there’s the unhelpful fact that Windows 11 by default encrypts the storage with the very slow software-based BitLocker, its massive RAM usage and general sluggishness are such a big deal that even Microsoft has acknowledged this and added workarounds for the slow File Explorer in Windows 11 by preloading components into RAM.
All of this appears to be part of the same trend in software development, where more resources are pointlessly used due to developing for the hardware, and performance increasingly takes a backseat to abstractions and indirections that effectively add bloat and latency.

A Steam Machine Clone For An Indeterminate but Possibly Low Cost
For various reasons, crypto mining has fallen to the wayside in recent years. Partially because it was never useful other than as a speculative investment and partially because other speculative investments have been more popular lately, there are all kinds of old mining hardware available at bargain prices. One of those is the Asrock AMD BC250, which is essentially a cut down Playstation 5 but which has almost everything built into it that a gaming PC would need to run Steam, and [ETA PRIME] shows us how to get this system set up.
The first steps are to provide the computer with power, an SSD, and a fan for cooling. It’s meant to be in a server rack so this part at least is pretty straightforward. After getting it powered up there are a few changes to make in the BIOS, mostly related to memory management. [ETA PRIME] is uzing Bazzite as an operating system which helps to get games up and running easily. It plays modern games and even AAA titles at respectable resolutions and framerates almost out-of-the-box, which perhaps shouldn’t be surprising since this APU has a six-core Zen 2 processor with a fairly powerful RDNA2 graphics card, all on one board.
It’s worth noting that this build is a few weeks old now, and the video has gotten popular enough that the BC250 cards that [ETA PRIME] was able to find for $100 are reported to be much more expensive now. Still, though, even at double or triple the price this might still be an attractive price point for a self-contained, fun, small computer that lets you game relatively easily and resembles the Steam Machine in concept. There are plenty of other builds based on old mining hardware as well, so don’t limit yourself to this one popular piece of hardware. This old mining rig, for example, made an excellent media server.

Qron0b: a Minimalist, Low-Power BCD Wristwatch
Over the decades we have seen many DIY clocks and wrist watches presented, but few are as likely to get you either drawing in the crowds, or quietly snickered at behind your back, as a binary watch of some description does. A wrist watch like [qewer]’s qron0b project which also uses BCD encoding to display the current time is among our more rare project types here, with us having to go all the way back to 2018 for a similar project as well as a BCD desk clock.
As is typical, a single CR2032 coin cell powers the entire PCB, with an ATtiny24A or compatible as the MCU, a DS1302 RTC and the requisite 4×4 LED matrix to display the hours and minutes. Technically three LEDs are unneeded here, but it looks nicely symmetrical this way, and the extra LEDs can be used for other tasks as the firmware is expanded from the current setting and reading of the time.
The AVR C firmware can be found in the above linked GitHub repository, along with the KiCad PCB project and FreeCAD design files for the watch body. The body accepts a 22 mm GT2/GT3-style watch strap to complete the assembly. With a single CR2032 you’re assured of at least a few months of runtime.

Adding Solar Power to an Electric Tractor
In my country, we have a saying: the sun is a deadly lazer. Well, it’s not so much a folk saying as a meme, and not so much in one country as “the internet”. In any case, [LiamTronix] was feeling those cancer rays this harvest season when running his electric tractor, and realized that– since he’s already charging it with ground-mounted solar panels anyway–if he’s going to build a roof for his ride, he might as well make charge the batteries.
Another bonus is safety: the old Massey-Ferguson at the heart of the electric tractor build didn’t come with any rollover protection from the factory back in the 1960s. Since having however many tons of tractor roll onto you was bad enough before it got a big hefty battery pack, we heartily approve of including a roll cage in this build. Speaking of battery packs, he’s taking this chance to upgrade to a larger LiFePo pack from the LiIon pack he installed when we first featured this conversion in 2024.
Atop the new roll cage, and above the new battery, [Liam] installed four second-hand 225 W solar panels. Since that’s under 1kW even if the panels have not degraded, the tractor isn’t going to be getting much charge as it runs. In the northern winter, [Liam] is only able to pull 80 W from the set. That’s not getting much work done, but who wants a tractor without a cab or heater when it’s below freezing? In the summer it’s a much better story, and [Liam] estimates that the roof-mounted panels should provide all of the energy needed to run the tractor for the couple hours a day he expects to use it.

NO ALLA CEMENTIFICAZIONE E ALLA SPECULAZIONE SFRENATA!
🟢 Il MUBA prevede la pavimentazione di oltre 1.300 metri quadri di verde, alberi tagliati e nuove strutture costruite, contraddicendo lo stesso bando che prevedeva “consumo di suolo nullo”. La sua realizzazione distruggerà un parco storico, frequentato e vissuto da chi abita nel rione e dove da sempre bambinx giocano e stanno all'aria aperta.
Ma questo non è un caso isolato.
🟢Negli ultimi anni abbiamo visto tentativi simili di trasformare aree verdi in palazzi con il pretesto della riqualificazione: il progetto al Parco Don Bosco, bloccato grazie alla resistenza del Comitato Besta, o il più recente esempio di vittoria al parco San Leonardo, passando poi per le questioni ancora aperte al Parco della Zucca e al Bertalia - Lazzaretto, alla caserma Sani. Non solo il verde, l'amministrazione vorrebbe attaccare anche i pochi spazi sociali rimasti al Pilastro, come dimostra la lettera di sgombero arrivata dal Comune alle abitanti e attivistx del Lazzaretto Autogestito.
È evidente il modello di città che l’amministrazione comunale ha in mente: grandi progetti da milioni di euro, poca trasparenza, scarsa considerazione per chi la abita, cementificazione sfrenata. Il tutto in un territorio colpito da eventi climatici estremi e in cui solo lo scorso anno più di 700 persone sono morte a causa dell'inquinamento.
🌱Non accettiamo questa crescente tendenza alla cementificazione: il parco è nostro, non un’occasione di speculazione urbana. 🌱
La storia recente di Bologna dimostra che la resistenza è possibile.
È il momento di mobilitarsi ancora, in difesa degli alberi, della comunità e del futuro del rione.

Il 9 gennaio 2013 le militanti curde Sakine Cansız (Sara), Fidan Doğan (Rojbin) e Leyla Şaylemez (Ronahî) venivano assassinate a colpi di pistola mentre si trovavano nel Centro culturale curdo di Parigi. Tutte e tre rivestivano ruoli importanti all’interno del movimento curdo: Fidan Doğan era la rappresentante del Congresso Nazionale Curdo in Francia, Leyla Şaylemez era attiva nell’organizzazione giovanile e Sakine Cansız, oltre ad essere stata una delle fondatrici del Partito dei Lavoratori del Kurdistan, si era battuta per l’affermazione e l’organizzazione delle donne all’interno del Partito stesso.
Ömer Güney, sospettato dell’omicidio, venne arrestato pochi giorni dopo, ma morì per una presunta malattia poco prima dell’avvio del processo. Fin da subito fu chiaro che la ricerca del mandante portava in Turchia coinvolgendo i servizi segreti turchi ma, ancora oggi, i documenti che la chiamerebbero in causa sono tenuti sotto segreto di Stato dalle autorità francesi.
Il 23 Dicembre 2022 altri tre attivisti curdi sono stati assassinati davanti al Centro culturale curdo di Parigi: Evin Goyi, rappresentante del Movimento delle donne curde in Francia, Mir Perwer, un compagno artista che lavorava per dare voce alla cultura curda e Abdurrahman Kizil, un attivista parte del Consiglio del Popolo curdo a Parigi. Anche in questo caso le autorità francesi hanno trovato l’esecutore ma hanno deciso di coprire il mandante, cioè i servizi segreti turchi, dichiarando che "chi ha sparato è un malato psichiatrico”.
Il 9 e 10 Gennaio 2026 è importante ritrovarsi non solo per non dimenticare le compagne e i compagni uccisi e chiedere al governo francese di assumersi la responsabilità di quanto avvenuto, ma anche per ricordare che quegli assassinii si inseriscono in un conflitto ampio che vede frapporsi, da decenni, le forze che lottano per il confederalismo democratico in Medio Oriente e forze reazionarie che invece tramano per profitto. Una lotta, quella dei fratelli e sorelle curde e non solo, che ha condotto prima alla liberazione di Kobane dall’ISIS, e dopo all’affermarsi del Confederalismo Democratico come nuovo modello di organizzazione della società, basato sull’esercizio di una democrazia diretta, l’ecologismo e (non da ultimo) la liberazione delle donne.
Ricordare Sara, Rojbin e Ronahî, Evin, Mir e Abdurrahm significa ritrovare le radici di quella stessa lotta e, attraverso la loro memoria, difendere il presente!

A few months ago, I installed #Nextcloud on my shared hosting domain to use it as a repository of files I like to have always available, whether on my phone or at the PC.
Unfortunately, Nextcloud requires SSH access for maintainance and I don't have it. As of now, everything is working but Nextcloud gives me warnings that I can't address without SSH access, and I fear the time will come when I can no longer use it securely.
I really like #CryptPad and was thinking of moving everything to an instance of that platform.
On CryptPad, the files are encrypted, so I could also store personal stuff there without any major worries. The OpenOffice suite is available, so I could even do some editing. They would handle all the updates I have to handle myself now.
It looks like CryptPad is definitely better for me. Can you spot any downside of this solution?

For years, scientists have debated whether Sahelanthropus tchadensis—an ape known from skull and limb bones found in Chad—was primarily bipedal, meaning that it walked on two legs like humans, or if it walked on all fours like chimpanzees.
Now, a team led by Scott Williams, an associate professor of anthropology at the Center for the Study of Human Origins at New York University, has spotted a detail in the femur bone, known as a femoral tubercle, that strongly suggests this ape was a biped. Since bipedalism is a defining trait of human relatives, known as hominins, the discovery confirms that these bones belonged to the earliest known human ancestor by a margin of about one million years.
“The really novel part of our study is the discovery of a new feature that had never been noticed before, and that's the femoral tubercle,” Williams told 404 Media in a call. “I think that was the final piece of evidence that convinced me that this was a biped, and therefore probably a hominin, because you don't find that feature in anything else.”
“I think this will convince a lot of people, but certainly not everyone,” he added. “There'll be rebuttals. I'm sure that people will challenge it. That's fine. That's how science works.”

Indeed, the remains of Sahelanthropus tchadensis have generated controversy since they were initially reported in 2002. Over the past five years, different teams have argued both for and against the hypothesis that this species walked on two legs. This unresolved question inspired Williams and his colleagues to take a “fresh and independent look” at the fossils, he said.The researchers conducted a comparison of the limb bones with other hominin remains, while also re-examining them using a technique called 3D geometric morphometrics. The latter effort exposed a hidden detail: the presence of a femoral tubercle, which is a bony protrusion where the femur connects to the hip.
“It basically prevents our torso from falling backward or falling sideways as we walk,” explained Williams. "Chimpanzees, gorillas, and other apes don't need to have that structure because they don't have to take on a vertical posture like we do. You don't need that structure—unless you're a biped.”
Of course, hominins didn’t just suddenly stand upright one day, and this ancient species shows an interesting mix of features that suggest it still spent plenty of time in the treetops in addition to walking on land. This liminal state between arboreal and terrestrial life persisted for millions of years in hominins until the rise of Homo erectus two million years ago, which is the first hominin to walk in a similar upright position to modern humans.
In addition to pinpointing our own human origins, the fossils offer a possible glimpse of the last common ancestor between humans and our closest living relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos. These two ape lineages split about six or seven million years ago, around the same time Sahelanthropus tchadensis was roaming through Chad.
“The debate about what the last common ancestor was like is really highly contested,” Williams said. The remains of Sahelanthropus tchadensis suggest that human relatives in this era may have been similar in size to chimpanzees and bonobos, but had body proportions more akin to later hominins.
While Sahelanthropus tchadensis can be described as the earliest human ancestor in a general sense, it was probably not the direct ancestor to modern humans. It’s become clear in recent decades that a diversity of hominin lineages emerged and became extinct over the past seven million years, so it’s difficult to trace the direct lineage of our own species, Homo sapiens, the only humans that have survived to the modern day.
“The more fossils that are discovered,” Williams said, “the more complicated the picture looks.”
Jailbreaking the Amazon Echo Show
As locked-down as the Amazon Echo Show line of devices are, they’re still just ARM-based Android devices, which makes repurposing it somewhat straightforward as long as what you want is another Android device.
In this case, we’re talking about the first-generation Amazon Echo Show 8, which is a 2019-era device that got jailbroken back in November by [Rortiz2]. The process was then demonstrated in a video by [Dammit Jeff].
Currently only two devices are supported by this jailbreak, with the Echo Show 5 being the other one. If there’s enough interest, there doesn’t appear to be any technical reason at least for why this support couldn’t be extended to other devices. One major reason for jailbreaking is to put LineageOS on your Echo device courtesy of these Echo Show devices recently beginning to show advertisements, with no way to disable this.
The process of jailbreaking and installing the LineageOS ROM is somewhat long as usual, with plenty of points where you can make a tragic mistake. Fortunately it’s pretty simple as long as you follow the steps and afterwards you can even install the Google apps package if that’s your thing. Just mind the 1 GB RAM and 8 GB of storage on the Echo Show 8. In the case of [Jeff] he mostly replicated the home automation and entertainment features of Amazon’s FireOS with far less locked-down alternatives like Home Assistant.

La denuncia sostiene che l’assegnazione e l’erogazione del premio violino il testamento di Alfred Nobel (1895), che vincola l’uso dei fondi esclusivamente alla promozione della pace, della fratellanza tra le nazioni e della riduzione degli eserciti. Secondo il denunciante, l’uso dei fondi Nobel in questo caso costituirebbe appropriazione indebita, poiché Machado avrebbe pubblicamente sostenuto o giustificato interventi militari, escalation armate e cambi di regime con l’uso della forza, in particolare contro il Venezuela.

C'è chi attribuisce ad Albert Einstein la frase "follia è fare sempre la stessa cosa aspettandosi risultati diversi"...
Nel mio lavoro più volte mi capita di incontrare casi nei quali è richiesta la figura del consulente per validare idee confuse (sempre le stesse) e si diventa indesiderati quando si cerca di far comprendere che, per ottenere risultati diversi, è necessario cambiare qualcosa.
Altre volte ascolto chi si lamenta per il lavoro, per come è stato trattato, per lo stipendio, per il rapporto con i colleghi... ma non studia, non è curioso, non rischia, o non cambia semplicemente QUALCOSA (atteggiamento, skills, il lavoro stesso...).
Tutti speriamo che il 2026 sia un anno migliore, e ce lo auguriamo l'un l'altro, ma ricordiamoci che serve fare qualcosa di diverso per non essere folli più che mai.
Auguri di buon 2026 a tutti (a me compreso)... per il 2026 mi accontenterò di diversificare il mio lavoro e di leggere più libri, e magari vedere più spesso alcune persone che per impegni vari (e un po' di pigrizia) frequento meno di quanto mi piacerebbe.
Buona vita e buon cambiamento a tutti...

Al Consiglio Generale dell’Associazione Luca Coscioni la sua testimonianza mentre le sperimentazioni sono ferme da due anni
“Noi, persone con malattie rare, siamo chiamate ‘pazienti’. Ma l’Epidermolisi Bollosa non ha pazienza: non aspetta. Per noi, il tempo è fondamentale, perché il tempo della malattia non è quello della burocrazia. La malattia non è paziente: agisce, avanza, e non si ferma”. Alessandro Barneschi, 40 anni, affetto da Epidermolisi Bollosa sin dalla nascita, è intervenuto online durante il Consiglio Generale dell’Associazione Luca Coscioni tenutosi a Roma giovedì 18 dicembre.
Alessandro è il volto della campagna lanciata per chiedere al Ministro delle Imprese e del Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, di intervenire per far ripartire le sperimentazioni cliniche sulla terapia genica per contrastare questa malattia genetica rara e gravissima conosciuta anche come “sindrome dei bambini farfalla”, che rende la pelle estremamente fragile, soggetta a ferite dolorose e continue. In alcune forme è letale, ma la sperimentazione è ferma da due anni nonostante i risultati straordinari già ottenuti e la disperata attesa di pazienti e famiglie.
Il professor Michele De Luca – co-presidente dell’Associazione Luca Coscioni – e il suo gruppo di ricerca dell’Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, hanno sviluppato una tecnologia portata ai pazienti attraverso Holostem, azienda fondata nel 2008, un’eccellenza italiana nel campo delle terapie cellulari e geniche.
I risultati raggiunti sono promettenti: questa terapia ha già salvato la vita a un bambino altrimenti destinato a morte certa. Nel 2023, a seguito della decisione del socio privato di liquidare la società, il Governo autorizzò l’acquisizione da parte della Fondazione Enea Tech & Biomedical. Un intervento che, sulla carta, doveva rappresentare la salvaguardia di un patrimonio scientifico nazionale e la tutela dei diritti dei pazienti. A due anni dall’acquisizione, però, le sperimentazioni cliniche sull’Epidermolisi bollosa non sono ancora partite ferme in un limbo inspiegabile. Di fronte a questa situazione insostenibile, l’Associazione Luca Coscioni ha deciso di lanciare un appello pubblico al Ministro Urso, accompagnato da una campagna – La ricerca è un diritto umano, e salva vite – che ha in Alessandro Barneschi il suo testimonial.
Durante il suo intervento al Consiglio Generale, Alessandro ha condiviso cosa significhi vivere con l’Epidermolisi Bollosa: “Sono ferite dolorose, portano via un sacco di tempo per le medicazioni e di energie”, ha spiegato descrivendo la quotidianità di chi convive con questa malattia. “E come me sono tanti altri pazienti, tante altre famiglie, sia grandi che purtroppo neonati in nuove famiglie che si stanno creando. Bambini nascono tutt’ora con questa malattia grave e io, come ho detto all’inizio, da 40 anni aspetto una probabile soluzione, una cura per questa malattia. E non oso immaginare i genitori dei bambini più piccoli. Il male e la tristezza che devono sopportare con la speranza che arrivi una cura per non si sa quanto tempo, anche se in realtà la terapia l’avevamo veramente vicina come risultato”. Davanti ad uno stop che appare amministrativo e non scientifico Barneschi ha voluto impegnarsi in prima persona: “Io sono qua per fare questo appello, per smuovere qualcosa, per far ripartire la sperimentazione con chi l’ha portata avanti per 30 anni, per non buttare la sua esperienza e non attendere oltre”.

A Firenze il Rojava è di casa. Lo è e lo è stato anche e soprattutto attraverso la vita di Orso. Lo è sui muri, sui murales.
Qua, nei nostri quartieri, la questione curda non è stata di passaggio, ma un nodo centrale attorno a cui si sono formate convinzioni, immaginari, idee.
L'incredibile movimento per la resistenza palestinese ci ha ricordato quanto il genocidio, l'annientamento, l'occupazione dei territori, la dispersione dei popoli oppressi, la pulizia etnica, siano gli elementi centrali con cui oggi più che mai l'economia del capitale ridisegna gli scenari di estrattivismo e sfruttamento e colonialismo.
La geopolitica dell'ipocrisia vorrebbe questi due popoli da parti opposte della storia. Se da un lato Israele utilizza la questione curda per attaccare la Turchia, dall’altro la Turchia si erge a paladina del popolo palestinese nella sua retorica anti-israeliana.
Ma dietro alle reciproche accuse, le relazioni militari e commerciali tra Turchia e Israele si sono protratte a lungo. Per noi è necessario tenere insieme la solidarietà alla lotta di entrambi i popoli, e comprendere le loro aspettative e proposte di soluzione dal basso può darci una solida base per la solidarietà.
Le lotte palestinese e curda ispirano da sempre milioni di persone, e rappresentano un simbolo di speranza e di riscatto per l’Italia e per tutto il mondo. Nella consapevolezza che la crisi mediorientale è epicentro di una più generale crisi globale, e che le guerre e i massacri che lì avvengono sono preludio di altri genocidi in tutto il resto del mondo.

I've used occ web a few times but current NC release is no longer supported.
I use NC as a pure file repository so CryptPad web office is beyond what I really need (but I think it'll be useful every now and then).
