An old joke in physics is that of the “spherical cow”, poking fun at some of the assumptions physicists make when tackling a new problem. Making the problem simple like this can help make its fundamentals easier to understand, but when applying these assumptions to real-world problems these assumptions are quickly challenged. Which is what happened when [Seth] from Berm Peakattempted to tow a huge trailer with a bicycle — while in theory the bike just needs a big enough gear ratio he quickly found other problems with this setup that had to be solved.
[Seth] decided on a tandem bike for this build. Not only does the second rider add power, but the longer wheelbase makes it less likely that the tongue weight of the trailer will lift the front wheel off the ground. It was modified with a Class 3 trailer hitch, as well as a battery to activate the electric trailer brakes in case of an emergency. But after hooking the trailer up the first time the problems started cropping up. At such a high gear ratio the bike is very slow and hard to keep on a straight line. Some large, custom training wheels were added between the riders to keep it stable, but even then the huge weight still caused problems with the chain and even damaged the bike’s freehub at one point.
Eventually, though, [Berm Peak] was able to flat tow a Ford F-150 Lightning pulling a trailer a few yards up a hill, at least demonstrating this proof of concept. It might be the absolute most a bicycle can tow without help from an electric motor, although real-world applications for something like this are likely a bit limited. He’s been doing some other bicycle-based projects with more utility lately, including a few where he brings abandoned rental e-bikes back to life by removing proprietary components.
The QingPing Air Quality Monitor 2 is an Android-based device that not only features a touch screen with the current air quality statistics of the room, but also includes an MQTT interface that normally is used in combination with the QingPing mobile app and the Xiaomi IoT ecosystem. Changing it to report to a local MQTT server instead for integration with e.g. Home Assistant can be done in an official way that still requires creating a cloud account, or you can just do it yourself via an ADB shell and some file modifications as [ea] has done.
By default these devices do not enumerate when you connect a computer to their USB-C port, but that’s easily resolved by enabling Android’s developer mode. This involves seven taps on the Device Name line in the About section of settings. After this you can enter Developer Options to toggle on Debug Mode and Adbd Debugging, which creates the option to connect to the device via USB with ADB and open up a shell with adb shell.
From there you can shoot off the QingSnow2 app and the watchdog.sh that’s running in the background, disable IPv6 and edit /etc/host to redirect all the standard cloud server calls to a local server. Apparently there is even SSH access at this point, with root access and password rockchip. The MQTT configuration is found under /data/etc/ in settings.ini, which is used by the QingPing app, so editing redirects all that.
Of course, the device also queries a remote server for weather data for your location, so if you modify this you have to provide a proxy, which [ea] did with a simple MQTT server that’s found along with other files on the GitHub project page.
The speed with which it happened prevented users from accessing their data, highlighting the risks of decentralized social media without backups. Its administrator ceased operations, causing confusion and data loss for many healthcare professionals who had signed up as an alternative to Twitter.
This event serves as a reminder: Wherever you are on Mastodon, back up your data!

To anyone on Lemmy and wondering, there are additional hashtags that render on PieFed but not Lemmy, though it doesn't help here since this is the only place that hashtag has ever been used (that PieFed here shows).

For some reason Piefed is removing the title of the post, which links to a Reddit thread as a source. That thread clarifies: "I emailed the address given on the page and was told the instance service was cancelled by the instance owner and it's unknown whether there was a plan to migrate or just shut down completely".
Looking at the under maintenance page myself, the email seems to be the server host's, so this isn't the instance owner being unsure about their future plans yet, it means the hosting relationship is cancelled and the host doesn't know about things beyond that.

This is the fediverse, where many different software intersect. You should expect the possibility of incompatibilities with users from instances other than your own. When a post looks like something is missing, always open it on its origin instance before complaining. It's likely your own instance is at fault for the issue, not the author.
In this case it looks like Piefed deleted the post's title.
Traditional social media is run for-profit and thus has an incentive to keep their website online as much as possible to keep their company alive by gaining users and revenue. And I would bet they do have backups. Hobby websites like fediverse projects often are can be run by any flaky nobody that can have varying motives and varying data retention practices.
Any city council or minor public service or library could run their own instance, though, alongside the usual website. This doesn't have to be a hobbyist thing or for-profit enterprise.
If Mastodon is federated, why isn't this recoverable somehow? I thought federation involved making copies of content on other servers, does that just not happen often enough for it to work as a backup?
ActivityPub (the model that the fediverse uses for federation) is publishing-based, as the name implies. Like email, you're sending messages to a list of recipients. Usually that's your followers, people you mention, and the person you're replying to. If the recipient list is empty, then your message won't leave your instance.
Threadiverse users don't really have to worry about this too much because communities act as relays, sending your posts to all of the community's followers as well. But microblogging instances don't have that luxury. If they don't have any followers, aren't writing a reply, and don't mention anyone... their post isn't federated anywhere.
It's also worth considering that only public data is federated. For example I wouldn't be able to recover my bookmarks from another instance, and it doesn't seem like Lemmy federates your list of subscriptions. Your posts may still exist elsewhere even when your instance goes down, but that's not necessarily the data people want to be able to recover.
I'm not sure what people would be trying to access, I suppose. Post history? Things that can be exported, like account settings, generally should be stashed somewhere. Things that can't be, well... That's a bit sad but I dunno, I never post anything online that I care so much about I'd be sad if it disappeared. Anything I did care about, I make a backup of it locally.
Not trying to downplay people's upset, but just pointing out ways to protect the things you care about.
Dear lazyweb (or lazystodon or lazyverse), are there dead simple scripts for periodic backup? You know, something you just authorise to act as a client and then stick into a crontab to run daily/weekly and it'll keep a local copy of your stuff. Preferably something you can just install via pip or gem or (oh please gods no) npm.

Scientists Discover One of the World’s Oldest Cremations
Welcome back to the Abstract, and Happy New Year! Here are the studies this week that stoked the flames, cooled off, then went feral and rogue.
First, the ashy remains of a cremation pyre reveal a rare glimpse of an ancient ritual. Then: Uranus is chilling, ham on the lam, and a Saturn without a Sun.
Some 9,500 years ago, a community of hunter-gatherers assembled to cremate a small woman in a ceremonial pyre at a rock shelter near Mount Hora in Malawi.
Millennia passed. Many things happened. And now, at the dawn of the year 2026, scientists report the unearthing of the ashy remains of this ritual at a site, called HOR-1, which is "the oldest known cremation in Africa” and “one of the oldest in the world,” according to their study.
“Archaeological evidence for cremation amongst African hunter-gatherers is extremely rare, with no reported cases south of the Sahara,” said researchers led by Jessica I. Cerezo-Román of the University of Oklahoma. “Open pyre cremations such as that at HOR-1 demand substantial social and labor-intensive investment on behalf of the deceased. Thus, cremation is rarely practiced amongst small-scale hunter-gatherer societies.”
Indeed, before reading this study, I did not fully appreciate the work that goes into cremating a corpse from scratch. For a body to be properly reduced to ash in this prehistoric era, a community had to collect tinder, build the pyre, ignite it, and then keep the flames stoked at high temperatures for around seven to nine hours by continually adding more fuel.
The process would have been long and arduous, suggesting that it held a significant meaning to these prehistoric attendees. This ancient rock shelter was clearly used for mortuary practices over millennia, which “reflect a deep-rooted tradition of repeatedly using and revisiting the site, intricately linked to memory-making,” the researchers said.
The oldest known pyre, located in Alaska, dates back 11,500 years and contains the created remains of a 3-year-old child. But HOR-1 is the oldest example of adult cremated remains found in a pyre. We will likely never know the identity of this woman, or why her death inspired such a carefully coordinated ritual. But it seems safe to assume that the cremation was a significant event for the community that expended so much forethought and labor to perform it.
“While this cremation is highly unusual in the African archaeological record, it contributes to growing evidence of complex social worldviews among tropical African hunter-gatherers,” they added. “These practices emphasize complex mortuary and ritual activities with origins predating the advent of food production.”
Uranus is so cool. I mean this in the flattering vernacular sense—Uranus is genuinely nifty—but it’s also literally true. Not only is this ice giant the coldest planet in the solar system, its upper atmosphere (the thermosphere) has been getting steadily cooler for the past 40 years—and nobody really knows why.
Scientists now think they have ruled out a hypothesis that linked this long-term thermospheric cooling to a weakening of the solar wind, which is a stream of energetic radiation and particles emitted by the Sun. A new analysis suggests that this weakening effect has reversed over the past 15 years, hinting that it is not the cause of the cooldown.
“We determine that the solar wind kinetic power at Uranus has increased by ∼28% since the start of solar cycle 24 (at the end of 2008),” said researchers led by Jamie M. Jasinski at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
“If the solar wind is a driver of Uranus' thermospheric temperature, then one would have expected a gradual increase in the temperature since then. However, the temperature has continued to consistently decline over the same time period. Therefore…we argue that the solar wind kinetic power is unlikely to be the primary driver of thermospheric temperature at Uranus.”
As for the real cause, the truth is still out there. May this mystery inspire a new generation of Uranian scientists.
Now, for the incredible adventures of ancient seafaring pigs. Today, many domestic and feral pig lineages are scattered across the Pacific islands of Wallacea, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia; their ancestors were schlepped over the oceans by early mariners in several migratory waves.
To learn more about how these boats brought home the bacon, scientists sequenced 117 modern, historical, and ancient pig genomes spanning nearly 3,000 years. The results revealed that pigs from Indonesia to Hawaii are mostly descended from a group of domestic pigs that voyaged with Austronesian-speaking groups from Southeast China and Taiwan about 4,000 years ago.
“Transporting these animals between islands resulted in a distinctive evolutionary history characterized by serial founder effects, gene flow from divergent lineages, and likely selection for specific traits that facilitated the establishment of feral populations,” said researchers led by David W.G. Stanton of Queen Mary University of London and Cardiff University.
In other words, some of the most significant Pacific voyages also doubled as piggyback rides.

Astronomers spotted this world drifting through interstellar space, untethered to any star, with a trippy technique known as microlensing. When a distant planet passes in front of a star from our perspective on Earth, its gravitational field warps the background starlight, creating a distinctive light signature that exposes its presence (for more on microlensing, here’s a short feature I wrote). Ulaczyk / OGLE Now, a team has captured a microlensing event with telescopes located on both the ground and in space, a combination that allowed them to calculate the foreground planet’s mass (Saturn-ish) and its distance from Earth, which is about 10,000 light years. Based on its mass and its very quick pace through space, this gas giant was probably born around a star, but was flung out of its home system by gravitational interactions between neighboring stars or planets.
“We conclude that violent dynamical processes shape the demographics of planetary-mass objects, both those that remain bound to their host stars and those that are expelled to become free floating,” said researchers led by Subo Dong of Peking University.
It’s a reminder that as bad as things seem sometimes here on Earth, at least our planet hasn’t been violently ejected from the solar system to drift endlessly in the dark. Small wins!

Out of all 49 beautiful US states (plus New Jersey), the one you’d probably least want to camp outside in during the winter is arguably Alaska. If you were to spend a night camping out in the Alaskan winter, your first choice of shelter almost certainly wouldn’t be a USPS electric cargo trike, but over on YouTube [Matt Spears] shows that it’s not that hard to make a lovely little camper out of the mail bike.
We’re not sure how much use these sorts of cargo trikes get in Alaska, but [Matt] seems to have acquired this one surplus after an entirely-predictable crash took one of the mirrors off. A delta configuration trike — single wheel in front — is tippy at the best of times, but the high center of gravity you’d get from a loading the rear with mail just makes it worse. That evidently did not deter the United States Postal Service, and it didn’t deter [Matt] either.
His conversion is rather minimal: to turn the cargo compartment into a camper, he only adds a few lights, a latch on the inside of the rear door, and a wood-burning stove for heat. Rather than have heavy insulation shrink the already-small cargo compartment, [Matt] opts to insulate himself with a pile of warm sleeping bags. Some zip-tie tire chains even let him get the bike moving (slowly) in a winter storm that he claims got his truck stuck.
While it might not be a practical winter vehicle, at least on un-plowed mountain roads, starting with an electric-assist cargo trike Uncle Sam already paid for represented a huge cost and time savings vs starting from scratch like this teardrop bike camper we featured a while back. While not as luxurious, it seems more practical for off-roading than another electric RV we’ve seen.
3D graphics are made up of little more then very complicated math. With enough time, you could probably compute a ray marching by hand. Or, you could set up Excel to do it for you!
Ray marching is a form of ray tracing, where a ray is stepped along based on how close it is to the nearest surface. By taking advantage of signed distance functions, such an algorithm can be quite effective, and in some instances much more efficient then traditional ray marching algorithms. But the fact that ray marching is so mathematically well defined is probably why [ExcelTABLE] used it to make a ray traced game in Excel.
Under the hood, the ray marching works by casting a ray out from the camera and measuring its distance from a set of three dimensional functions. If that distance is below a certain value, this is considered a surface hit. On surface hits, a simple normal shader computes pixel brightness. This is then rendered out by variable formatting in the cells of the spreadsheet.
For those of you following along at home, the tutorial should work just fine in any modern spreadsheet software including Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc. It also provides a great explanation of the math and concepts of ray marching, so is worth a read regardless your opinions on Excel’s status as a so-called “programming language.”

Centro Pace ecologia e diritti - via Vicenza 5 (Friday, 16 January 17:30) Per proseguire il cammino di riflessione dell’area pace–nonviolenza, un incontro dedicato a riarmo e guerra, alle parole che li giustificano e alle pratiche che possono disinnescarli.
Al centro dell’incontro, collegamento online con Pasquale Pugliese, del Movimento Nonviolento formatore, filosofo, blogger, instancabile artigiano di pensiero critico.
Un’occasione per aggiornare e rilanciare la campagna “Obiezione alla guerra”, insieme a “Leva la leva”, dando voce agli obiettori e alle obiettrici dei conflitti di oggi, in un tempo in cui il silenzio viene spesso scambiato per consenso.
Di cosa parleremo:
smontare le narrazioni dominanti che presentano la difesa armata come inevitabile
riscoprire il ruolo della diplomazia, del diritto e delle istituzioni internazionali nel prevenire e fermare la guerra
esplorare strategie e pratiche della difesa non armata e nonviolenta, già esistenti, già praticabili, già necessarie
A seguire, dialogo con Massimiliano Pilati, area pace e disarmo del Forum trentino per la Pace e i diritti umani.
Questa riflessione guarda avanti. A una sicurezza che non nasce dalla minaccia reciproca delle armi, ma dalla giustizia, dalla cooperazione, dalla convivenza. Non è un’utopia gentile: è una responsabilità collettiva, qui e ora.

It reads like an instance by the name of MedMastodon went down with little to no notice.
Although this announcement seems to have been made on a Friendica instance that also isn't cooperating (edit: hashtags) - certainly not to anyone without a login on that specific instance, which I imagine will affect roughly 100.00000% of all people reading this (and high ironically - in the Alanis Morissette sense - roughly also 100.00000% of the people that do not read this:-).
To anyone on Lemmy and wondering, there are additional hashtags that render on PieFed but not Lemmy, though it doesn't help here since this is the only place that hashtag has ever been used (that PieFed here shows).
Oh, and the instance actually does return an error page saying "This instance is under maintenance.", ~~so it's remotely possible that this Friendica message is based on misinformation, and that the instance being "down" may be only temporary? (I have no idea)~~

in reply to OpenStars • • •For some reason Piefed is removing the title of the post, which links to a Reddit thread as a source. That thread clarifies: "I emailed the address given on the page and was told the instance service was cancelled by the instance owner and it's unknown whether there was a plan to migrate or just shut down completely".
Looking at the under maintenance page myself, the email seems to be the server host's, so this isn't the instance owner being unsure about their future plans yet, it means the hosting relationship is cancelled and the host doesn't know about things beyond that.

I'm probably going to switch to making smaller releases from now on (one big monster every 4-6 weeks contains too many changes for people to really absorb and understand) so 1.5 might be sooner than you expect.

in reply to tomiant • • •This is the fediverse, where many different software intersect. You should expect the possibility of incompatibilities with users from instances other than your own. When a post looks like something is missing, always open it on its origin instance before complaining. It's likely your own instance is at fault for the issue, not the author.
In this case it looks like Piefed deleted the post's title.

in reply to chicken • • •ActivityPub (the model that the fediverse uses for federation) is publishing-based, as the name implies. Like email, you're sending messages to a list of recipients. Usually that's your followers, people you mention, and the person you're replying to.
If the recipient list is empty, then your message won't leave your instance.
Threadiverse users don't really have to worry about this too much because communities act as relays, sending your posts to all of the community's followers as well. But microblogging instances don't have that luxury. If they don't have any followers, aren't writing a reply, and don't mention anyone... their post isn't federated anywhere.
It's also worth considering that only public data is federated. For example I wouldn't be able to recover my bookmarks from another instance, and it doesn't seem like Lemmy federates your list of subscriptions. Your posts may still exist elsewhere even when your instance goes down, but that's not necessarily the data people want to be able to recover.

Things that can be exported, like account settings, generally should be stashed somewhere. Things that can't be, well... That's a bit sad but I dunno, I never post anything online that I care so much about I'd be sad if it disappeared. Anything I did care about, I make a backup of it locally.
Not trying to downplay people's upset, but just pointing out ways to protect the things you care about.

You know, something you just authorise to act as a client and then stick into a crontab to run daily/weekly and it'll keep a local copy of your stuff. Preferably something you can just install via pip or gem or (oh please gods no) npm.
