The official Mastodon app (and most other Fediverse apps) do not collect any data about you.

When you sign up on a Fediverse server, it asks for the minimum amount of information (an email address and a password) and none of this info goes to the app or app makers.

This is in stark contrast to other social networks which seem to collect lots of personal info. See the attached image for a comparison of the privacy policies of various official social network apps.

BlueSky has just been partially bought by a cryptocurrency company "Blockchain Capital" and appointed a blockchain / cryptocurrency expert to their board:

BlueSky describe the tie-up with Blockchain Capital as a "natural partnership" and says the blockchain company has "a uniquely deep understanding of our decentralized foundation".

It's not someone giving someone else money. This isn't a loan or a donation.

Bluesky are (partially) selling themselves to Blockchain Capital, that's why there is someone from Blockchain Capital on Bluesky's board now.

Selling your company to VCs tends to lead to enshittification because VCs usually want lots of profits and growth, even if it's unsustainable in the long term. There's an example of something similar happening here: waxy.org/2024/01/the-quiet-deaโ€ฆ

As the OSI prepares to make official its "open source AI" definition with a glaring lack of requirement that the actual source (training data) is made available, it's worth noting that their work is funded by google, meta, microsoft, salesforce, etc. What does open source even mean here if the literal source of the model isn't open? These companies are invested in making you think they're on your side while they boil the oceans to avoid paying human beings for labor.

The idea behind open source, as it grew out of the free software movement, has always been to water down software freedoms, to create something more palatable to corporate interests that *sounds* good but means very little. This continues that work for the current "gen AI" bubble. It's time to ditch open source as an ideal, and the OSI especially.

#OpenSource #OpenSourceAI #OSI #OpenSourceInitiative #FreeSoftware #AI #GenAI #GenerativeAI

in reply to โจ

They posit you can still modify (tune) the distributed models without the training source. You can also modify a binary executable without its source code. Frankly that's unacceptable if we actually care about the human beings using the software.

A key pillar of freedom as it relates to software is reproducibility. The ability to build a tool from scratch, in your own environment, with your own parameters, is absolutely indispensable to both learning how the tool works and changing the tool to better serve your needs, especially if your needs fall on the outskirts of the bell curve.

There's also the issue of auditability. If you can't run the full build process yourself, producing your own results from scratch in a trusted environment to compare with what's distributed, it becomes exponentially harder to verify any claims about how a tool supposedly works.

Without the training data, this all becomes impossible for AI models. The OSI knows this. They're choosing to ignore it for the sake of expediency for the companies paying their bills, who want to claim "open" because it sounds good while actually hiding the (largely stolen and fraudulently or non-consentually acquired) source material of their current models.

Do we want a new definition of "open source" that actively thwarts analysis and tinkering, two fundamental requirements of software that respects human beings today? Reject this nonsense.

in reply to โจ

Totally agree.

It's time to leave #OSI behind.

Tech Cyborg reshared this.

in reply to โจ

I'm in no way related with OSI, and I know very little of current LLM tech, but I've been thinking a lot about this issue from a software freedom philosophical perspective, trying to figure out how essential training data is for users to have the four essential freedoms.

it's not obvious to me whether having access to the training data places users and developers at an advantage or at a disadvantage compared with those that don't have access to it. training data is so massive, and the link from any of it to the system's behavior is so subtle, that it seems conceivable to me that probing the system's behavior and relying on incremental training might be more efficient and more reliable than analysis of the training set, for at least some past, current and future technology.

since I don't know enough about current systems to tell, I set out to devise a method to find the answer to that question. I'm thinking that an adversarial setting, in which users/developers who have access to the training data compete with users/developers who don't to find answers to questions about how the system works, and to modify the system so that it does what is requested (these are analogous to freedom #1), with questions and change requests coming from adversarial proponents. this would be a kind of Turing test on whether any given system respects freedom #1 (the other freedoms are much easier to tell), and it could be applied to any future such systems as well. has any such thing been considered? does it seem worth doing, or even thinking more of? cc: @joshuagay @zacchiro @freemo

in reply to Alexandre Oliva

@lxo It's a good approach, but I don't think it's needed.

If we start from first principles, there's no doubt that to fully exercise freedoms of study and modify, you need the training data. (You can exercise *some* of those freedoms even without training data, but in a suboptimal way. I can give precise examples if you're curious.)

The "data is too big" problem is IMO a distraction. There are relevant ML systems that are small enough to make retraining them from scratch viable.

in reply to Stefano Zacchiroli

@lxo AFAICT even OSI recognizes this. Their main arguments against mandating training data in OSAID are of a pragmatic nature, related to (1) the current state of the industry, (2) the legal regimes that apply to data, which are different from those of (free) software.

I disagree with the decision taken based on those arguments, but I understand them. Either way, they don't call into question the fact that training data is *better* than no training data to exercise user freedoms.

in reply to Stefano Zacchiroli

@zacchiro @lxo what it is โ€” if anything these rainbow capitalists are the extremists insisting on exploiting it.
in reply to โจ

@โจ yet another example of why the open source development model isn't what is important. Respecting freedom is what matters. Open source is antithetical to Free Software.

@RaccoonForFriendica new version 0.1.0-beta13 available!

Changelog:
๐Ÿฆ migration to Material3 pull-to-refresh components;
๐Ÿฆ moved app info to navigation bar and improve "About" dialog;
๐Ÿฆ add open-source licences screen;
๐Ÿฆ additional more readable font;
๐Ÿฆ redesign application icon and splash screen;
๐Ÿฆ add new l10ns (Polish and Portuguese);
๐Ÿฆ fix spoiler closing immediately after being opened;
๐Ÿฆ added experimental support to background notification check;
๐Ÿฆ code refactoring and cleanup.

The icon change was made necessary because in order to display notifications in the status bar a small monochrome icon has to be provided and the old one has too many details. But since every cloud has a silver lining, this was the occasion to redesign a new one and, by combining it with the icon of the Lemmy app, create a logo for the Procyon project, i. e. the umbrella organization both clients belong to.

@RaccoonForFriendica I am planning to add more translations for the app UI, apart from English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Portuguese.

Do you have any recommendations based on your preferences? Even auxiliary languages like Esperanto are viable... I would try to cover as many as possible Friendica users, because those are the main target.

Do you also have any suggestion for the app fonts? Especially something that could make the app more readable, e.g. Atkinson Hyperlegible.

Next release will contain experimental support for notifications, as you requested, be ready to test it!

Science and universities have a long story of fighting for independence from kings and churches, unlike most open source communities. Whatever you do in the real world and not in the void, there is a power struggle involved, but not everybody is willing to bear the risks and costs of that struggle. Professors and scientists have more "class conscience" than the average open source volunteer, but maybe this incident is an opportunity for them to better understand this struggle.

@paolog@hachyderm.io Yes, science and universities have *sometimes* been able to defend not just their, but our public use of reason. Come il potere incontrollato delle aziende sta destabilizzando la governance

Nel suo libro "The Tech Coup: How to Save Democracy from Silicon Valley", Marietje Schaake evidenzia il potere incontrollato delle aziende tecnologiche e il loro impatto sulla democrazia, sostituendosi spesso ai governi e minacciando il principio di legalitร  democratica (vedasi l'uso di spyware come Pegasus o operazioni offensive nel cyberspazio).

@neil The wierd thing is that Tusky's scheduled-posts feature isn't an on-device thing โ€” the Mastodon API supports scheduled posts quite well. There just isn't an official UI for it. No idea whether that'd be easier for you than doing the timing on your end, but it's always seemed weird that the web UI is missing this feature despite 90% of the work being done already (or closer to 5% if they try to write a custom React date/time selector).

Ciao a tutti!

Dear people of the Fediverse, do not feel disappointed to see so many people doing a mass migration from X and Threads to Bluesky. I think itโ€™s a GOOD thing they are headed there.

What attracts them to a network with visible metrics and custom algorithms means they are not ready for the Fediverse. And I wouldnโ€™t want them to change the (awesome) culture of this place. As @sennoma said earlier, let the Fediverse grow slowly

@Little1Lost @rysiek @JustinH Yes, that may bite many in the butt in the future. I just bridged my account and an old mutual from here followed me, so I hope my posts get some visibility there. Then they will know there are options.

I agree with the sentiment that it's pointless to fret what other people are supporting, buuuut ain't nobody joining bluesky for the metrics/backend, they're going because they saw an ad or a cool person.

Soave in the Veneto region of Verona, northern Italy, known above all for its Scaligeri Castle and for the typical wine that bears its name.

Under the main townโ€™s door, Porta Verona, you can see many hanging grapes. This derives from an ancient custom. That of hanging the best grapes, called rece, to let them dry until Christmas.
