The official Mastodon app (and most other Fediverse apps) do not collect any data about you.
When you sign up on a Fediverse server, it asks for the minimum amount of information (an email address and a password) and none of this info goes to the app or app makers.
This is in stark contrast to other social networks which seem to collect lots of personal info. See the attached image for a comparison of the privacy policies of various official social network apps.

I'm on Mastodon because I love the whole idea of a voluntary decentralized network. But at the same time... I'm also not like super opposed to the concept of a company needing to use some of my data to sell targeted advertisements, so they can make some money doing it. Being a software developer myself I completely understand that people have mouths to feed and business is business. I -love- l open source software, and I contribute. But it also doesn't pay bills a lot of the time.
If its done in a responsible way, like Bluesky seems like they're trying to, it's not that big a deal. I prefer Mastodon but I'm also not terrified of companies selling me targeted ads. As long as I feel like the company doing this ad brokering is somewhat responsible, its fine.
There's a very big difference between selling targeted ads (while keeping your data inside the company's own databases), and literally selling your data.
BlueSky are a for-profit corporation backed by VC money.
Whenever this structure has been applied to online services, it has inevitably resulted in "enshittification" where initially-reasonable policies gradually spiral out of control into full-scale surveillance. The VC investor-owners will demand ever more growth, and eventually the only way to grow will be to screw users.
VC-funding is incompatible with respecting users in long term.
FediTips did not "fear monger" nor "handwave" they stated facts. Corporate websites need revenue to satisfy their investors. Revenue does not magically happen. They need to sell something to someone. If it is not in app ads it can only be your content and your personal data. In time it will likely be both. That's just facts.
If you are fine with this, that's cool, but that's the way it is.

Money does have to come from somewhere, but covering costs and growing profits are two totally different things.
A lot of the essential infrastructure that for-profit activity depends on isn't itself for-profit. For example most roads are just funded to cover costs, they aren't growing profits or even making any profit at all.
Luca. Not trying to be disrespectful here. But, rather than speak in generalities, please try to think about it from a business perspective. Initially money comes from investors, so they can offer free stuff. But investors only do this to attract users. Eventually the business must make money. So they must sell something. What do you think Bluesky will sell? Serious question. What are their options for making money?

It is. Guess you mean that you don't think all surveillance capitalism is bad. In that, you are certainly in the majority, because most people willfully give away all their personal information.
Some of us here on Mastodon are particularly sensitive to the issue because of all the history of abuse. Also in the US we don't have GDPR so the government is not a protection from the worst abuses.

If you take investment money you are giving investors power over you. Investors, especially VCs, don't just want to cover costs, they want profit growth. In the online world, that inevitably leads to surveillance and "enshittification". Can you give an example otherwise?

That's the point. The fediverse separates the app maker from people running lots of indie servers, so info isn't centralised in any one place. It means people can choose who to trust with their info or even set up their own server.
Plus servers collecting the absolute minimum amount of info means there isn't much info kicking around anyway (except what users choose to post).
The fact the BlueSky app collects any info is a red flag as decentralised networks are supposed to avoid this.

However, as @ekis says bear in mind that Mastodon (and all the other social networks listed) use a database system that the server owner may have access to. In theory a server owner could manually look directly at the database to view private messages, but this would be true on all these social networks.

Additionally, there is no encryption on private messages (by default), so they are as private as the server (or servers if its cross server) is secure and the admin isn't a creep

The only reason the Mastodon app does now show this is because you can sign up to a different content server, given that Mastodon GmbH also runs their own server I'm not sure how truthful that statement is. You could also run your own PDS instead of using Bluesky's PDS.
@claudius @ekis @anarchademic sure there are a ton already, a lot of people host one for themselves. Its much easier than to host your own Mastodon server because the concerns are broken up much more and you don't need to deal with a lot of traffic. You could probably reasonably host it at home.
BlueSky servers aren't properly independent servers the way Fediverse servers are.
BS is structured so that servers depend on relays that are much more expensive to run. The plan seems to be that corporations will run the BS relays, and all the individual BS servers will be dependent on them.
@FediThing @claudius @ekis @anarchademic well someone has to pay for the bandwidth, relays are a much better solution than every instance needing to care about bandwidth and complicated devops and needing trust in the admins to not mess up your data. What entity runs a relay is 100% up to the people. If you want to come together and have a relay run through donations and community support you can do that. No different to how mastodon.social and other large instances operate.

I cannot reply to the original post, but "official" apps mean ones designated by the developers of the server software the app is designed to work with.
So, in this case, it's the developers of the main branch of Mastodon which is Mastodon gGmbH as Zeitverschreib said.
Another example would be the official Pixelfed app, which is designated by the developers of the Pixelfed server software.
You don't have to use these though. In fact the third party apps tend to be better.
BlueSky have set themselves up to enshittify by being a for-profit backed by VC money. They'll tempt people in and then gradually ramp up the problematic behaviour as the drive for profit increases.
That's why I'm steering clear of BlueSky, they seem to want to turn themselves into another Meta.

I mean these are the 3 identifying characteristics of a social network. 'Who are you', 'Where else might I know you from' and stuff you post.
It seems to be that Bluesky is benign here, with diagnostics arguably being excusable, and the other ones just counting data submitted to the server (which Mastodon would then "collect", too)
Right, that was my point. BlueSky is also technically decentralized and I am saying that maybe this data collection listed here is not by the app itself, but by the relevant server.
As I understand app developers are given some latitude in how they fill in these boxes, so what I was considering was the possibility that the BlueSky developers interpreted the requirements for this information differently.
Companies need to make money someday. You can't just keep using invested money. That's not a business. They need to generate revenue to offset their costs. That's the way it works. And, selling domains is not going to pay the rent.
I think it's because they're not seeing this happening directly.
If someone came up to them in the street and started following them around 24/7, filming them, recording their location, demanding their financial and medical details, stealing their browsing history, asking if they are pregnant etc they would feel differently.
Because this surveillance happens within their phone, at some level people can pretend it isn't happening.
Yeah, giving a phone number is pretty much like giving the network your real name and real life address etc, they can look that info up if they have your number.
BlueSky's app shouldn't be collecting data though, if they really are decentralised. Mastodon's app doesn't collect anything at all.

You don't need public goods to be profitable. Roads aren't profitable, parks aren't profitable, firefighters aren't profitable, but they serve society and we all depend on them (even for-profits depend on the existence of non-profit services).
Mastodon has been going since 2016 without ads or investors, and parts of the Fediverse are even older. It is possible to do social networks without ads or for-profit structures.
I don't really see how social media can be profitable without ads, at least if you want people to use your service. For better or worse, social media services are free* (heavy asterisk). So convincing people to pay for a subscription to sustain the service is pretty much a non-starter.
Untargeted ads could possibly work. But then that won't grow as much, which of course is incompatible with investors that demand as big of a return as possible. But it might be long term sustainable without hoovering up user data?
p.s. If you want another online example, the World Wide Web wasn't exploited for profit, it was turned into an open standard.
If we have interoperable online standards that anyone can take part in without involving corporations, then people are free to choose the kind of online world they want.
The email goes to your server, not to the app. The signing in process on the official and third party Mastodon apps happens through your server's website (that's why it looks like a browser when you do that part of the signing in, it is using your phone's web browser for that part).

That's the whole point though: separating the app and the server is a really good thing.
When the app and the servers are run by different people using open standards, it gives end users the ability to combine a non-surveillance app with a server run by people they trust, or even set up their own server.
Services which spy on you through the app anyway and/or force the user to use a particular server, are taking away this power from the user.
You're also trying to extrapolate that those app store privacy listings mean anything negative about the privacy implications of Bluesky versus Mastodon, you are doing more than "discussing just the app store listings" by presenting them in that light

...but it doesn't. Your server collects it, which in your case is wetdry.world. Your server then sends a token to your app saying that your email and password were correct, but it doesn't tell the app what they are.
It's an open source app, outsiders can check to see what happens.
p.s. As for IP addresses, it's impossible to use anything online without giving some form of IP address. That's how the internet knows where to send stuff. It would be like trying to order something to be delivered without giving any kind of delivery address.
That doesn't mean you have to give your own IP address, the Tor network and VPNs let people hide it.
and this is the same case with Bluesky - in my case is bsky.social (i haven't had the time to set up my own) but could easily be any other instance of ATproto... it's not different in the slightest

Totally agree, firefighters are worth every penny and probably do pay for themselves in terms of reduced "externalities", same with most public services.
They're just not run to make a profit, but to provide something useful to society.
I'd argue that firefighters etc reduce the total cost society pays. For example, if you give homes and support to those who don't have them, that's cheaper than the cost of emergency services. I can find the citation, I learned this at a USA housing and urban development conference.

Siiiigh. I've been resisting getting a Bluesky account for a long time, but recently had begun to reconsider as they seemed active and nothing too bad had happened. But now the other shoe has dropped. They crumbled before my resolve did.
From what I gather in the comments, it seems the users are okay with it as long as there are no actual crypto stuff and no ads. Not a high bar to clear, but when your other experience is with Twitter, you'd take what you can get.
The Fediverse is still the more optimal choice, but overall I'm more cautiously optimistic about Bluesky rn. It's interesting to see how it will sustain itself in the future without succumbing to ads, and maybe there's lessons to learn from it too.

What we do know for sure from the press release is they have just partially sold themselves to a blockchain company, and appointed a blockchain specialist to their board. We also know their CEO has a background in blockchain and cryptocurrencies too.
This isn't a loan. The blockchain VCs now have partial ownership of Bluesky and a seat on the board. They will want profits, and then bigger profits after that, forever. It's not sustainable.
Also, even before this deal, the CEO of BlueSky is also from a blockchain/cryptocurrency background.
As far as I can tell, most of the BlueSky board is now blockchain/cryptocurrency people.

VCs aren't interested in building serious use cases, they're interested in making as much money as possible and then selling to someone else.
That's why so much of the internet is "enshittified", because the owners of sites and services care more about getting rich than what actually happens to the users or services they build.

Actually, they weren't bought out partially, just some A series funding stuff, but as the blog says, they won't make it into a crypto based thing, so I don't see any reason for anyone to worry about it, Bluesky is a perfectly fine service, and if they also implement federation, that will make it better.

Seriously. This is the worst. Every time I say, 'It isn't so bad' this week, life tacks on another pack of bullshit like this. I seriously tire of life right now.
I'm guessing BlueSky's main worry is how to make money from a free site without it becoming an advertising or personal-data tracking company. As with nostr, crypto people like to think cryptocurrencies are one way this would be possible, it allowing their users to make pennies (or sats) from their content, with the site getting a slice of that. If that's their thinking though, it'll change the way some of their users will use or view the site.
The problem in our society today is that everyone thinks IT services are free. I donate to Mastodon and my instant operator every month. I doubt whether my contribution covers the costs, but I am doing something.
Only a fraction of people do this. And probably even fewer at BlueSky. I suspect that BlueSky will start advertising sooner or later.
No surprises here. Bsky scored very high on my enshittification bingo card since day one, but there's no need to go through the whole list. The most important parts: - Is it closed source? Yes (partially). - Is it for-profit? Yes. - Is it centralized? Yes.
Such projects turn into garbage very fast these days. Historically, the process was much slower (although the end result was the same).

And so is Xwitter. And so is LinkedIn. And so is TikTok.

BlueSky's big claim is that they're "decentralized" with "no algorithm". And yeah, technically, ironically, everything's an algorithm, but I'm not well-actuallying that word. Their current default feed algorithm is not The Algorithm; it lets you see all the posts from all your friends and that's great. It also lets you block at will, and won't shove spam on your feed, or shadow-ban your friends' political posts. It's not evil (yet). It's fine.
But. It's not decentralized. #BlueSky is a centralized corporate app, running a theoretically-decentralized network protocol that currently has only one (1) active node on the network: BlueSky. The other minor members of the ATP network are just piggybacking on BlueSky's 13 million captive users for auth and reach.
It (allegedly?) uses #ATProtocol to pass messages between its edge nodes. But all its central features are still centralized, and the protocol allows "reach" to be centrally managed separately from "speech" (to enable centralized blocking, and goosing and filtering in various feeds), and the protocol isn't even fully implemented as designed.
For example, ATP allows for "DID"s for identity portability, so if you later want to switch to a hypothetical GreenSky competitor, you won't lose your followers and blocklist and post history.
But the actual BlueSky app does not implement DIDs. It's called "did-placeholder" on their github. It's a stub. It's TBD. It's not a feature, it's a feature request.
And guess who just bought a seat on BlueSky's board with a $15M Series A round? That's right, a crypto vulture named Blockchain Capital.
Their general partner Kinjal Shah -- whose cryptocurrency-fueled career has careened from Bitcoin to NFTs to DAOs to VC -- is now on the BlueSky board, and methinks the press release doth protest too much when it defensively claims, with just a pinky promise, "the Bluesky app and the AT Protocol do not use blockchains or cryptocurrency, and we will not hyperfinancialize the social experience (through tokens, crypto trading, NFTs, etc.)."
Go ahead and enjoy BlueSky. It's better than Facebook. It's easier than Mastodon. It's sassier than TikTok. It's not motherfucking Xitter. But it's not decentralized.

Having such people owning it and running it doesn't bode well at all, when looking at the history of VCs and blockchain. They are there just to make vast amounts of money, and sooner or later they enshittify and exploit their users.
Small amounts of money or covering costs are not enough for such people.
As the OSI prepares to make official its "open source AI" definition with a glaring lack of requirement that the actual source (training data) is made available, it's worth noting that their work is funded by google, meta, microsoft, salesforce, etc. What does open source even mean here if the literal source of the model isn't open? These companies are invested in making you think they're on your side while they boil the oceans to avoid paying human beings for labor.
The idea behind open source, as it grew out of the free software movement, has always been to water down software freedoms, to create something more palatable to corporate interests that *sounds* good but means very little. This continues that work for the current "gen AI" bubble. It's time to ditch open source as an ideal, and the OSI especially.

They posit you can still modify (tune) the distributed models without the training source. You can also modify a binary executable without its source code. Frankly that's unacceptable if we actually care about the human beings using the software.
A key pillar of freedom as it relates to software is reproducibility. The ability to build a tool from scratch, in your own environment, with your own parameters, is absolutely indispensable to both learning how the tool works and changing the tool to better serve your needs, especially if your needs fall on the outskirts of the bell curve.
There's also the issue of auditability. If you can't run the full build process yourself, producing your own results from scratch in a trusted environment to compare with what's distributed, it becomes exponentially harder to verify any claims about how a tool supposedly works.
Without the training data, this all becomes impossible for AI models. The OSI knows this. They're choosing to ignore it for the sake of expediency for the companies paying their bills, who want to claim "open" because it sounds good while actually hiding the (largely stolen and fraudulently or non-consentually acquired) source material of their current models.
Do we want a new definition of "open source" that actively thwarts analysis and tinkering, two fundamental requirements of software that respects human beings today? Reject this nonsense.
I'm in no way related with OSI, and I know very little of current LLM tech, but I've been thinking a lot about this issue from a software freedom philosophical perspective, trying to figure out how essential training data is for users to have the four essential freedoms.
it's not obvious to me whether having access to the training data places users and developers at an advantage or at a disadvantage compared with those that don't have access to it. training data is so massive, and the link from any of it to the system's behavior is so subtle, that it seems conceivable to me that probing the system's behavior and relying on incremental training might be more efficient and more reliable than analysis of the training set, for at least some past, current and future technology.
since I don't know enough about current systems to tell, I set out to devise a method to find the answer to that question. I'm thinking that an adversarial setting, in which users/developers who have access to the training data compete with users/developers who don't to find answers to questions about how the system works, and to modify the system so that it does what is requested (these are analogous to freedom #1), with questions and change requests coming from adversarial proponents. this would be a kind of Turing test on whether any given system respects freedom #1 (the other freedoms are much easier to tell), and it could be applied to any future such systems as well. has any such thing been considered? does it seem worth doing, or even thinking more of? cc: @joshuagay @zacchiro @freemo

No idea whether that'd be easier for you than doing the timing on your end, but it's always seemed weird that the web UI is missing this feature despite 90% of the work being done already (or closer to 5% if they try to write a custom React date/time selector).

Dear people of the Fediverse, do not feel disappointed to see so many people doing a mass migration from X and Threads to Bluesky. I think itโs a GOOD thing they are headed there.
What attracts them to a network with visible metrics and custom algorithms means they are not ready for the Fediverse. And I wouldnโt want them to change the (awesome) culture of this place. As @sennoma said earlier, let the Fediverse grow slowly
Even if the Twitter quitters go to BlueSky rather than here, it's still a net positive for Mastodon:
1) X/Twitter is a toxic cesspit. Fewer people using it is a positive for society as a whole.
2) Each person who leaves means less content and less engagement for the remaining users, and a worse signal-to-noise ratio, making it more likely they'll go too.
3) Conversely, it means more discussion, more engagement on a non-X/Twitter platform.
4) Already, BridgyFed allows some BlueSky posts to appear here, and some posts here to appear there. More BSky users means more people who'll eventually adopt BridgyFed.
5) Long-term, there's scope for better federation beyond BridgyFed between the Fedi and BSky. When that happens, more BSky accounts mean more accounts here.

Viewed objectively Bluesky seems to offer the possibilities of networking and discovery that existed for a few years on the hellsite and which supported artists and other small creators.
One thing I'm happy with in particular is that for a while there it was looking like Threads was the heir to the X throne but this challenges that narrative and there still isn't just one place to point to for the migration.
I also don't think people will necessarily keep going to Bluesky indefinitely, fedi could still become the main destination for some future waves.
It's a shame they use a different protocol. On Threads I think I could cross-post good toots from Mastodon accounts as a sort of advertising for Mastodon. I'm not sure that works well on Bluesky when you have to go through a bridge.
In any case, the collapse of ๐ should give other platform operators pause if they are thinking of anti-user policies.

Primo quello di imporre un ordinamento legislativo sovranazionale che va a limitare la loro indipendenza: secondo: voler neutralizzare i confini le differenze culturali tra i popoli in nome di un ideale comunitario; terzo: superare lo spazio economico locale inserendo il paese in un quadro dominato da attori stranieri.
