it's a Fediverse software we're implementing and will be easy to host. I think there will also be some public instances so...yes, totally suitable for non techies!

littleFedi: a Fediverse Server That Doesn't Need a Data Centre
I was fifteen, and there were no BBSes in my city. So every call was long distance, once a day, sometimes twice. I'd start the dialer and wait for that sound - the handshake, the negotiation, the hiss settling into a carrier - and then I was connected to a computer sitting in somebody's bedroom, a few hundred kilometres away. I was a co-sysop of a local board and a national moderator of a FidoNet area. None of my friends understood what I was doing, and they'd stopped asking to avoid an incomprehensible monologue. But I liked it, and that was enough for me.Here's the thing about that computer in someone's bedroom. There was no data centre. No domain, no certificate authority, no hosting provider, no cloud. Just a machine, a phone line, and a person who'd decided to run it. If you wanted to reach it, you called it.
Now look at what it takes today to put a small server on the network so other people can talk to it. A public address, which most home connections no longer have. A domain, which you rent. A certificate, which somebody has to issue you. And, increasingly, a VPS somewhere, because the software won't fit on the hardware you already own.
We've added a lot of infrastructure between two people who just want to talk. That's what littleFedi is about.
What it is
A single Go binary. No Ruby, no Sidekiq, no Redis, no separate worker processes to babysit. You runinit, answer a few questions, and you've got a working instance. It speaks ActivityPub, and it speaks the Mastodon client API well enough that existing apps just work.It also runs on hardware that would make Mastodon - or even Akkoma - struggle. Most software in this space assumes a VPS with a few gigabytes of RAM and a database server next to it. We assumed a Raspberry Pi Zero W behind a home router. There's a
low_powermode that tunes memory use, image decoding and thumbnail generation for exactly that kind of box, and it's tested on that kind of box, not just on a fast dev machine. In spirit this puts littleFedi close to snac, which I've always liked a lot. Same conviction: a personal server shouldn't need a fleet of services behind it.
Federating without a public address
littleMesh is the part I'm most attached to, and it's the part that goes back to the modem.Your instance generates an Ed25519 key pair. That key is its identity - the node's address is derived from the public key, so reaching that address means reaching the holder of that key and nobody else. No registrar, no certificate authority, nobody to ask permission from.
A small set of public lighthouse nodes help two instances find each other. Once they're introduced, the traffic runs over a second TLS session pinned to both node IDs. The lighthouse copies encrypted bytes back and forth. It never sees plaintext, and it can't impersonate either side. And if the two nodes can reach each other directly, they drop the relay after the introduction and talk peer to peer.
Which is, more or less, calling the BBS directly. Just without the phone bill.
The gateway into ordinary HTTPS
Mastodon and other regular servers can't resolve a mesh address on their own. There's no domain and no certificate for them to find. That's what the optional HTTPS gateway is for. A lighthouse operator can run one alongside the relay, and it bridges the mesh into ordinary HTTPS for the rest of the web. The gateway has to terminate TLS to do that, so it can technically see the traffic passing through it. Which is exactly why it's a separate, opt-in piece and not something every node exposes by default.
It has two independent settings: one controls what the gateway lets ordinary internet visitors reach at all, and a second one applies again at the destination node. Left at their defaults, both allow only federation traffic - ActivityPub delivery, discovery, public media. Web login, API and media proxy stay closed unless an operator deliberately opens them.
Mesh peers talking to each other directly never touch the gateway at all. That exposure only applies to the bridge into the wider web. And all of this can be self-hosted.
Chronological timelines
Timelines are chronological. Nothing gets reordered by an engagement model. If you want something closer to "what did I miss", there's a separate
/catchuppage you visit on purpose. It ranks posts using signals your own instance already has - how many people you follow boosted something, whether it continues a conversation you took part in. No external popularity score, no telemetry, nothing leaves the machine. You press "mark as read", it moves a divider, and that's the only thing it remembers.Self-expiring posts
You can set a post to expire, with its own timer, instead of a fixed instance-wide setting. This isn't a client-side trick that hides the post from view. The expiry goes on the same durable job queue that runs the rest of littleFedi's background work, so the deletion survives restarts and isn't lost if the process happens to be down at the moment the timer fires. When it does fire, the post is deleted and a real Delete activity goes out to everyone who received it - so it actually disappears from remote instances too, not just locally. Editing the post before then can push the timer back or cancel it.
Static blogs, with real threaded replies
littleFedi can take a Fediverse post and publish it as a page on a plain static blog, with its own Atom feed and permalinks that don't move even if you edit the post later. No JavaScript, no database hit on page load. The part I find more interesting is that the replies aren't left out. If the author turns the option on, littleFedi pulls the public replies that were actually federated to the post, threads them the same way the timeline does, and bakes the whole tree into the generated HTML at build time. So a blog post can show a real comment thread, in the same static file, with the same guarantee as the rest of the page - no JavaScript, no live queries. Only public and unlisted replies qualify, obviously. Anything followers-only or direct never enters the picture.
Why it looks like this
This isn't minimalism for its own sake. It's about how many people simply can't run their own server today, because the requirements are too steep. The hardware, the ops complexity, or just needing a domain and a public address before you can start. We're trying to remove those barriers one at a time, while still shipping a real, federating, reasonably complete server: polls, quotes, scheduled posts, MFA, PostgreSQL and S3 if you want to scale up later.I've written before about taking a semi-truck to buy salad. Hardware keeps getting more expensive and the software running on it keeps asking for more of it every year. That's backwards. If the machines cost more, the operational cost of what sits on them should go down, not up. Same with complexity: the default direction is to keep adding it, and we'd rather strip it out.
And there's the other half, which is closer to why any of us are doing this at all. It's the same thing that drew me to snac and to the way grunfink works on it, and the same thing that had me dialing a stranger's computer at fifteen. People building tools so that people can talk to each other. Nothing more dressed up than that. We'd rather show the servers running, talk about the Pi sitting in the corner, share a tiramisu photo if it comes up. The joy in this was never about the money it brings in. It's about what we end up building, humanly, because of it.
It's beta software, still short of a first release, and I'd rather say that plainly than oversell it. But it runs, and it federates. That's the part I wanted to write about.

Warning. This post is mostly my ramblings on how I re-discovered the internet and may contain traces of content. The CorpoWeb I’m not quite sure how I started down the road of discovery with the small web.Five Magics
@pete loved it. And also this one: five-magics.net/physical-media…
Seems like we are on the same path. 😄
It’s 2026 and it looks like physical media is on the rise (again). People are re-buying their media collections which we all wantonly cast aside in our rush to digital platforms. Barren shelves in our homes are slowly filling up again.Five Magics
This explains why I often feel like the only one on Earth who *doesn't* think social media is evil.
The #Fediverse *is* what “social media” means to me. I've heard of Instagram and the rest, but I've never actually used them. I've never struggled with their algorithms. I don't even know what that's like.
So when politicians talk about banning social media, I'm horrified. Why would anyone want to ban this place? This place isn't hurting anybody. And where else would I socialize?
It was interesting to hear from professional photographer. I always used internet for my own needs, tried out too many socials and even if I technically receive in my mailbox about some updates on my friends I long ago abandoned them all.
Reddit was my for long time social media because of my interest for Hearthstone, then Fire emblem heroes (mobile gacha), then Warframe and then last one was Arknights (better mobile gacha hence still enjoy it) with side of anime and random scroll of top posts. It all ended when Reddit wanted to in simple words "kill all mobile apps" or restrict api access.
People were angry, there was boycott, then people left and when they didn't find anything they like on Fediverse (be it Mastodon, Lemmy or any other software) they gone back.
I learned about Mastodon. Joined and explored, understood that it was what my imagination of web was. Is Fediverse a jank? Definitely is. But does it have promises that I would love to see? Yes.
In the 3+ years I wouldn't say that I found my place in Fedi. I still use YouTube for gameplay videos and Discord to talk about Arknights, but I can say that I enjoy my time on either Mastodon where I mostly share cats, interesting topics, some politics and some good soft or my Misskey where I joined Japanese instance, know not a lick of Japanese but found many fan artists that either dedicated or do occasionally fan arts for Arknights.
I will also add that I found, shared and clicked on blog links and read them a lot more in span of year than I would on Reddit. I was on Reddit over 12 years so can't without exaggeration say that I clicked more blog links over 3+ years on Fediverse.
I may only click once, read and never get back to that person blog. But I always enjoy reading persons thoughts and ideas. I am really picky on who I wish to follow and what I enjoy but I still admire and respect people writings.
So this is where I glad to be part of Fediverse, where I might doomscroll but I will stop and read whole novel length instead of consuming little text, short videos and worse of all - AI generated crap. We human and we err, but getting duped by AI on occasion vs being fed daily, using ai tools to verify ai crap...
I can go on and on but even at worse, Fedi still feel safe and cozy compared to other Big social medias. Sadly some people experience not same as mine which resulted in some twisted view that going back is better than trying settle here. Worse part is when I think of Fedi, I think of time I played Counter-strike be it 1.6, source or other, Half life and many more. All games that had master server and server lists where each server was it's unique place with normal or weird rules. That's what Fedi for me is, while for others... One master server is all it is. There no someone's pc in garage working to host their match in CS... There one server when it's down , no one can enjoy game.
Excellent text. I bookmarked it.
« The connection and reach that Instagram made possible decades ago have basically vanished, and the direction big tech social media took - and is speeding toward - is reflected in the global numbers of user activities. »
We have on going group conversations for friends and family on Messenger, SMS, Signal or whatever because social medias are no longer the place for keeping in touch with friends and family.
"because once you see the system for what it is - a parasitic loop that rewards noise over nuance, metrics over meaning, reaction over reflection..."
Paradox with #system is that we need a bit of a better loop where we pioneer our type of "noise" & *convert* it into understanding. some better purpose, in line with *Mastodon and it's member population working together.
+1 ?

> I write this blog. I moved all my data out of common clouds to truly own it again. I started gardening. I volunteer to help people with computer problems in our local community centre. I give practical workshops on digital independence. I can be myself again.
I've seen similar sentiments, and could say many of the same things muself. It feels like people who are figuring out how to be happy on Fedi are also figuring out how to be happy—both online and IRL—in general. This platform isn't perfect but it's definitely encouraging more people to be their best selves than anything else on the internet right now.
Look at this one. Article today, incident from 18 months ago. 60 minutes from a venting private message, to AI flag, to fbi, to cops showing up at this teacher’s classroom to arrest her. Night in jail, job lost. Article doesn’t even mention who terrified the kids must’ve been.
Now tell me: in this year of our larde, would you trust any one of these corporations that can read your messages to differentiate between “I’m gonna shoot the fam today” (with a gun) and “I’m gonna shoot the fam today” (as a photographer)? Or any other of the infinite number of potential misunderstandings or typos? Hell, I wouldn’t trust a human to do that, much less a bot!
These corporate platforms are a safety threat to the people we love… that’s an understatement. We gotta be having these convos with the people we care about to get them off these platforms.

Minimum 2GB of memory. We’ve received reports of intermittent database connection drops with just 1 GB

Go fuck yourselves, fascist apologists.
You still have not understood what this controversy is about. Nobody here denies anyone the right to have freedom of speech nor to donate to political parties.
This controversy is about us not wanting to indirectly fund this party, as custommers. Your custommers money goes to the Mullvad company. Then a little part of this money goes to Daniel. And a part of his money goes to this party.
Oblomov reshared this.
Shortly before your donation to the fascists I had payed a yearly subscription.
After this fascist whitewashing article I completely regret that.
Is there a way to cancel and get the rest of my money back?
I was wondering if I had done the right thing not renewing when my latest payment cycle came to an end.
Thank you for clarifying I did. This ongoing shameful defence of the of defensible reminds me why I found this donation and your refusal to stand by the principles Mullvad was founded on, so reprehensible.
You have made a huge error by standing by Daniel in this and your inability to realise it or simple refusal to apologise does your reputation no good.
@tailscale and with this — you realize you have very little time left to add a other VPN's as exit-nodes, or face this kind of PR yourself for every single post, the same as mullvad does— they are not ignoring it anymore, they are complicit, now so is Tailscale.
And @mullvadnet the only way you could ever be in a remotely neutral political position, is to match and compensate the donation, but towards the left, or at least a organization helping victims your indirect donations cause.
Even putting the right wing party issue aside (as if we could) the most charitable reading of this guy’s blog is that he’s yet another techbro salty about having to pay his taxes.
So say whatever you want but I’m done with Mullvad as long as this guy is involved in any way.
To quote you:
»It should be clear by now how the party donation relates to this. Mullvad does not condone it, nor condemn it. It most likely was a bad idea; most things where there are a multitude of conflicting opinions necessarily are. But societies need a great diversity of ideas, initiatives and organizations who can be tested and sifted until the best ones remain. Ideally through rational debate.«
In short:
In other words: you don't object to the money made from your customers being openly funneled into the support of a racist and extremist party.
To which we say:
Fuck you, enablers of racism.
Trying to be politically neutral when it comes to fascism is to state that you're OK with a *bit* of fascism.
You'll not get another penny from me.
I didn't have much hope going into that article and what little hope I had was destroyed when you immediately went on what reads as a desperate defence, I'm getting second hand embarrassment just reading it. Claiming to nurture "radical tolerance" when you fund highly intolerant politics is so hypocritical and ironic I'm surprised you didn't realise how absurd that is when you wrote this. As others have mentioned, you need to develop and understanding of the tolerance paradox.
You build the tools to fight the very oppression you financially support. This is either an attempt at ensuring your products remain profitable, in which case you are two-faced and opportunistic, taking advantage of and manufacturing the oppression your tools are needed to fight, or you are just simple-minded, naïve, and understudied in the topics you claim to be so knowledgeable on, in which case I hope that one day you realise your position and climb down from the peak of Mount Stupid and improve your political activity and funding (ideally also getting rid of your CEO for the damage he's done to your company's reputation) or, failing that, you simply stop all political activity altogether and join the rest of the VPN companies in promising consumerist sheep that they'll get Netflix from different countries or whatever they use to market their products nowadays.
Whatever you choose, choose quickly, as the longer you hold onto your position, the more humiliating it will be when you finally admit you were wrong. I likely will never be purchasing your product again and will be going elsewhere unless major change happens, as do I hope many other people who've been watching this prolonged humiliation ritual.
the more you dig your own grave with this very badly handled situation, the more it seems that this product was never ment to fight anything bad, or help a humanitarian cause.
It seems more and more that some just wanted to have a tool to cover-up their own shady doings, and the global success is a by-product.
Edit: "badly" is a understatement, i know people working in PR-training they will take your company as a educational example of how to destroy your own reputation.
one sentence. You couldn't go one sentence without downplaying that the problem is your guy is a fascist who gave huge sums to fascists to help them spread fascism
Who did you think this mealy-mouthed bullshit would placate, exactly
People who think their own political ideology is the only one who deserves, or in protecting the right for privacy are completly wrong!
I support #mullvad because of their mission statement, not for some individual opinion or statement!
Privacy is for everyone, and by anyone regardless of their political allingment
Stop addressing the controversy, you can't dig up, only down.
Daniel has to leave Mullvad, it's the only solution.
In January, when my current payment is up, I'll be switching to #nymvpn
Their CEO is everything I like in a CEO. #antifascist, an #anarchist, arrested for protesting, hates the authorities, and sees the world for the hellscape it's becoming.
Also, Nym has better technology that takes into account the threats users face in today's world.
You need to watch TheHatedOne's video about this situation. He explains very clearly why your customers and former customers aren't happy.

Its seems everyone is mad that the company doesn't control its employees outside of their business practices. If my employer told me I couldn't donate money to someone because of politics I would tell them to go fuck themselves. What if your company told you you couldn't go to a protest or post "fuck ice" on your private socials?
I get it, he's a big guy in the company and he supports some nasty stuff. You should feel entitled to give your money where you see fit, but don't try to set a precedent of your employer controlling your life outside of work. That's truly evil.
Should companies freely fire people that don't agree with their politics?
Aren't we on Mastadon and Mullvad to escape being monitored and controlled? Quit trying to make it a one-way thing. If one side can't do it, neither can the other.

"Mullvad does not condemn it"
It's a nazi bar, guys.
lost another customer will not help you make our privacy worse.
Bye and hello to Adolf when you finish in hell guy
I think this is not going well. This won't work out.
As you say, you are political.
I see two options for you:
1. Daniel leaves.
2. Loose quite a lot of customers (incl. me) and live with the fascist-brown background-colour Daniel gave you.
Such statements only worsen it.
Imagine you being a political activist seeking digital shelter in a VPN. Would you trust one with such background? I would not.
oh my actual god. This very definitely not the save that you seemingly thought it was. Linking to a blog post by your CEO where he defends bankrolling a right-wing party (and yes, forcible remigration and othering the poor is right-wing). 😮
As for this quote: “Do I like most of ÖP’s policies? No. Are they fit to run a country? No.” wtf
Is he bankrolling them? Yes.
Oblomov reshared this.
You had every opportunity to eject your CEO for contributing to a party that wants a bulk of your customer base dead and you didn't. You could've read the entire room but you didn't even bother peeking in the door.
I will no longer recommend you to anyone ever again, renew my subscription, or touch your service again. You assholes fucked up big time.
Inaction is still action. Fuck Fascism and fuck you for enabling them.
This is such bullshit couching it as freedom of speech. I guess someone calling for the genocide of Jews is alright in your eyes? This is not just about free speech, however, this is a donation to a political party who wants to enact these fascist policies.
You also show your privilege - set aside our differences? I guess this was written by some rich, probably white, probably male employee. Not any of the people who would be forcibly sent out of Sweden by the political policies endorsed by this poor excuse of a human being.
You had your chance to be proactive - this will go on and we continue to use our freedom of speech to say what an atrocious company you are.
Boycott #Mullvad
This blog post doesn't address the controversy. You don't even describe the controversial action: you don't name Örebropartiet once in your article. The problem is not a political donation. The problem is a donation to a party that is fundamentally at odds with the stated values of Mullvad. In this article, you don't try to reconcile those conflicts of interest, or even mention that there is a conflict of interest.
"hello. we are a pancake company. we encourage you to love pancakes, eat pancakes"
< your founder donated millions of kr to Destroy All Pancakes Initiative? >
"yes . he donated to another culinary effort and we are not involved in that. pancakes are fundamental for society, so we fight for pancakes, and are tolerant of all other views."
Your customers aren't upset that your founder (by extension, you, because you're giving this guy money) is spending their money on things that aren't directly in support of pancakes. They're upset that you're spending their money on things that directly seek to destroy all pancakes. And you didn't even mention what they are upset about in your response.

i don't really understand how someone that supposedly values privacy and freedom of speech could support a party that wants large scale "remigration" of people, even if they have other policies that are less at odds with privacy and free speech.
the american government has made it pretty clear that if you want to deport a lot of people then you need mass surveillance. ICE and companies ICE has contracted like Palantir correlate data from a lot of different sources in order to try to determine if someone is undocumented. they undermine those people and everyone else's privacy for that purpose and that environment undermines people's ability to speak freely.
aside from being morally abhorrent to me, i just think it's ridiculously naive.
no freedom is absolute. You are free of movement but their is a speed limit, for example. Speech is the same. You are free to express ideas but you are not free to express hateful content. Being for a remigration, supporting a fascist party is hateful speech.
You do not really care, imo. It is just a desperate try to damage control but it's kinda over now.
The only acceptable answer, in case you care : "fuck fascists" and fire that fascist in your company. Fascists are like a disease, you need to take your medicine to eradicate the virus.
You are free to accept this.
We are free do NOT accept it.

If this was a low level employee your blog post might hit the mark but this is your fucking CEO.
I don't doubt there are a lot of good people in your company but the captain of that ship is still heading toward the iceberg and refusing to listen or step down so regardless of what the many good people are trying to do there is only one ending for your ship. Come to think of it, Mullvad's VPN is a lot like the physical Titanic ship - it just did it's job but the actions of *people* left out laying at the bottom of the sea.

Are you ok?! Did you pull something bending over backwards to avoid calling fascism by name? Did your spine finally collapse under the weight of serving as a platform to a xenophobic hypocrite?
No, seriously! Are you fucking kidding me?
I read your post and his "rationale".
Came to the conclusion it's dangerous to give gullible people a lot of money. Seriously, if you let yourself be influenced by those that want to extract public wealth while blaming those protecting it, you should not have that kind of money. I regret seeing Sweden fall prey to the same crooks and thieves that ransacked so much already.
There's a reason both Putin and Trump throw money at those parties. I don't have to add to that.
You cannot say both
"We nurture a culture of radical tolerance,"
and
"We do not condemn fascism."
That's a paradox.
I've been grateful for Mullvad, since its been one of the only vocal groups for privacy in this country for a long time now. Ever since FRA was established I've had the feeling that most people don't give a single shit about this anymore. As long as they can complain about the weather, take their annual plane vacation to Tenerife and post their incessant shit on Instagram in order to get a few more likes from their relatives and friends so they can stroke their own egos for a bit. Therefore I've been silent about this whole ordeal, in anticipation of what kind of statement and actions Mullvad would take after reflecting on this for a while. Remember, this amount of money in this small country makes this a different beast than something you can just boil down to "Hey, we don't give a shit what Mr. Doe spends his weekly private allowance on, give us some slack." This is not chump change over here.
I would've guessed that their co-founders and employees would be smarter than this. I would've guessed that they would realise that this issue is really important and demands proper focus. That it's too important to let even the prospect of a misstep ruin it (I think we all know the thin ice VPN providers in particular live on when it comes to trust). I've been a paying subscriber for quite a few years by now, and I was not happy about having to look up this particular party in Örebro. I would've hoped that I wouldn't have to spend my time on something like that because of this. Now, I live in Sweden (unfortunately) but I don't live near Närke and because of that I don't really see any news about local issues there. Local news are very solidly guarded behind paywalls in this country, so we're not really encouraged to find any news about our neighbours, leaving most of us to read about other peoples' feelings and guesses on Facebook. I still haven't managed to find a lot of news or facts about this party due to this, but in my mind it's not actually really the most important aspect of this either.
The co-founder has in all likelihood gotten enough wealth from this company to be able to spend nearly 500 000€ on this party contribution, and judging from his own admission he doesn't particularly agree with their views or want them to have more power. If the blog post is to be believed (once you've gotten through the initial parts that are mostly factoids followed by his own unsubstantiated deductions and conclusions) it seems he basically spent it because of... a general feeling of "meh, fuck it". Or...? That's even more befuddling if that's the case. I don't know about the rest of you, but I never signed up for contributing to that. (And if he has such a private wealth that he can leisurely spend that amount of money with or without the help of his company on something he allegedly doesn't even really believe in I'd say it's even worse, and that it's obvious that he's part of the problem he himself is lamenting that this country is suffering from).
I won't call Mullvad co-founders or employees fascists. I won't call them any other names either. I won't even ask for a refund for the subscription I currently have. But I cannot justify renewing my subscription when it expires in a few months either. I genuinely thought Mullvad were smarter and more serious than this. I thought they would be able to handle this more responsibly than this.
Their latest statement has in my ears basically amounted to "Don't sweat it dude, we might occasionally splurge on some stupid shit from time to time. Who knows what consequences it might bring lol. But we still got you fam." To that I say: good luck, but I'm not comfortable with that "vibe", so I'm going to try to find a more serious and focused alternative to spend my money on from here on. As Mullvad themselves have basically stated the last few years, this issue is too important. Imagine what Mullvad could have done if the co-founders were serious enough about their own organisation to put this amount of money towards this actual issue instead?
Also Mullvad, seriously: "But societies need a great diversity of ideas, initiatives and organizations who can be tested and sifted until the best ones remain. Ideally through rational debate."
Since when was a private financial contribution of 500 000€ to a singular regional party an attempt to "sift initiatives and ideas and have a rational debate"? That's exactly the kind of behaviour you yourself have been criticising other private companies of doing in order to try to influence political decisions. Shame on you for not owning up to your own actions.
congrats on becoming "that vpn for Nazis".
my yearly subscription expires in a few days and this just solidifies my choice to move elsewhere. a few weeks ago there was no question I'd be renewing with you for another year. great work.
Should have said
In response to a the whiney bitches who complained, Mullvad will be making a generous donation to the same political party.
Much ado about nothing.
Nevertheless, your work is valuable, don't let these little things get in the way of what you do.
hey, Daniel, i know you're reading this.
if you donate money to a fascist party
you are not an anarchist.
doesn't matter what modifier you put in front of it. you're a collaborator. a quisling. our doors are closed to you and when they come for you, and they will, you will find no refuge. we'll be busy looking after the people who didn't help the fascists.
Daniel's donation may have single-handedly enabled OP to run at a national level. This is not insignificant.
This is going to push away many of your existing customers --many of whom are at-risk minorities worried about government surveillance-- and draw in far-right users that agree with Daniel's politics. I doubt the latter will recoup the lost revenue from the former.
If Daniel is not asked to step down by the time my current paid term expires, I will be moving to IVPN.
hah! "radical tolerance"
Yeah everyone that feels the pressure
of authoritarianisms and/or state pressure knows
what that means. It's centrist both-sides bullshit.
You can't have a "narrow focus" of "radical tolerance".
Nice damage control post, you failed.
probably a bad move for your business having your team member sponsor a political party especially with the virtue signalling crowd on the internet who will spread the negative messaging with buzzwords like wild fire.
Shame really as I like your marketed goals and products, one of the few in this space who I trust. Your marketing in London I thought was brilliant. Keep doing what you are doing, I still believe you are a force for good and a net positive for the goals of shining a light on the overreaching state.
It's a shame you have found yourself in this position, hopefully this doesn't impact your messaging, reputation and ultimately the number of customers long term.
I DID STOP USING MULLVAD VPN
Here is why:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7UmyDGjxO_s
„Mullvad founder and co-owner Daniel Berntsson donated five million Swedish Krona, ~$500k, to a local political party in Sweden. That on its own is a red flag to someone like me, who believes private donations to politicians and their parties should be illegal. But that’s not the biggest problem of this donation.
The biggest problem is what kind of a party this Mullvad owner personally donated to. It’s to the Örebro Party. A party with policies so broad and across the spectrum they seem to appeal to everyone all at once. But one of them, the key one in fact, stands out as the most incompatible with privacy and personal freedom. Values that the Mullvad company claims to uphold.
Örebro's political platform amounts to establishing a deeply authoritarian surveillance state in order to enforce their policies. If I just told you what it is you might not immediately see why it’s a problem so let me give you a deep political analysis of this situation."

We have nurtured a culture of radical tolerance.
If you're radically tolerant of Nazis, then you are not radically tolerant of the people the Nazis are putting in concentration camps.
having read Daniel's personal blog post I realize that he is an infantile libertarian yielding his money as a political weapon. This is dangerous.
Your company's self-contradicting, non-apologetic stance on the matter is a disappointment to say the least.
Was considering #Mullvad as my #VPN provider before - not anymore.
Alright, let's put the politics aside here, this is dumb in many other ways.
Instead of using the money to improve Mullvad VPN, Daniel decides it's a good idea to spend an excessive amount of money on a private donation. This money could have been used to improve the protection against current surveillance technology, DAITA and Multihop are not enough! Mullvad still is just like other VPNs at this point where you're nothing better than a linux iso torrenting tool dressed in privacy.
Also, just saying, tolerance doesn't work with the intolerant. Mutually exclusive ideas cannot coexist!
@limebar I clicked through and read a bit of the co-founders’ blog. Big mistake, wouldn’t recommend.

Words are cheap.
I could just use words and rant about your stance. I might even feel better.
But those words would be equally cheap.
Instead, I cancelled my #mullvad #vpn subscription and uninstalled #mullvadbrowser.
My money now goes to #ivpn and I’m using #librewolf.
I don’t want my money ultimately supporting racists and fascists. Simple as that.
So you want to silence people who are against fascism while taking their money to privately donate to fascists.
Ask Framework how well being the same flavor of "apolitical" is working out for them.
Kiss Trump's ring already. Go post on X and Truth Social. You're wasting your time on Mastodon and that's where the real money is, so what are you waiting for? Your principles are meaningless. The rest of us who know what ethical implications are will make better choices that won't involve Mullvad.
'We have nurtured a culture of radical tolerance. Even when some in our sphere of collaborators have advocated for actors and views that have personally and severely affected the founders and their family members, this has not stood in the way of cooperation.'
So you're fine with collaborating with the far right and won't stop even as it starts to harm people your founders claim to care about... That is not the PR win you think it is, that you liking money and not caring about who gets harmed.
"Daniel the individual" lol
You guys suck at this :'D
Also, stop funding a fascist party.
yeah keep digging the hole deeper

When I see anime being made (in videos) I’m always stuck by how traditional/manual it still is even when digital. Layers, undo, brushes, etc. But still quite traditional.
I’m struck by that here as well. Like it’s a digital version of physical painting/drawing.
It’s a massive question, but do you a see a way this would change? Ways to make you the artist more powerful/faster. Anything that’s missing from the tools that would be a true force multiplier?
(An anime episode is obviously far more “panels” than a comic, so many what would be valuable there would be different.)
Also always feel free to dump a link to something you’ve already written/recorded on the subject.
Thanks for taking time to think about it and answer! It’s a very tricky question, and at what point does artistry die and automation takes its place.
Plus as a non artist it’s a whole lot harder to visualize (ha, pun!) than let’s say changes do an IDE since I’m a developer. But I can see older improvements that I understand. Like flood fill or layers. So I’m always kinda curious where a tool such as Krita might go.
I also suspect it’s different for let’s say animation. They are awfully overworked, tight deadlines, and it’s not uncommon to see the end product suffer (I’m still amazed at the background artists, do they even sleep?). So lowering stress/work hours could be worth more than the artistry in some ways.
One last observation. Eyes used to be very simple in anime. Now we see complex shading and shapes for multiple main characters constantly. I assume they must have a way to “add in” the complex eyes rather than manually draw them each time. Which sparked this whole train of thought 😀
Ohhh that's so neat. o: I wish I could ride a big ol' bullet train like that.
There's something comforting about watching you put those tiny little texture strokes in there.
You moved away from the Yoga laptop it seems?
How is it traveling with so many devices?
@Juankprada This GPU might be one of the best "Intel integrated" GPU I had from Intel.
It's not really praising, it's just all other ones were disasters, and this one is just working and quiet so far 😆
It is smooth for Plasma, Krita and Kdenlive. But I haven't tried any 3D video game or Blender Eeevee rendering with it (I guess it's not really made for that 😅).
I have a 13.3in 2in1 smasnug laptop and it's been a nice option for this sort of thing, I installed Fedora Silverblue on it and Krita works pretty nicely. Probably slightly better than on Android.
Although the computer gives off an impression of being very fragile (if the community subreddit is anything to go by that's because those are very fragile).
Samsung is somehow about the only company making 2in1 laptops that uses Wacom UD-EMR pens (same as every other Samsung phone/tablet), and so they don't have weird issues like the cursor wobbling if you make diagonal lines, which is very common in other 2in1 laptops.
@lunareclipse @radmin Ha right, lucky Samsung with EMR styluses! 👍 Glad to know Fedora handle it correctly.
My laptop here (Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga) has a built-in AES tech (with its 'toothpick' stylus), but this is not as comfortable as a real EMR: yes, woobly lines, jumping cursor, and sometime very angular curves. Some AES laptop are better designed: well shielded and have low latency (my previous one) this current one, no 😀
That's why I prefer to connect an external drawing-tablet.
