The coin op company that handles the washing machines in my apartment building has left a little announcement that in some short amount of time, they will no longer accept cards or coins, and everyone using those machines has to install their app to use them.

It's not often that I paint directly from scratch with no sketch or line art, so I wanted to share this one. It's a risky technique, and I'm even eyeballing all the perspective, no grids here. I also avoid blending and smoothing, showing the brushstrokes on the canvas more clearly. I'm doing this to incorporate 'errors made naturally by humans', and I like it. It feels closer to the spontaneous style I like in my ballpoint pen sketches.

@thematic @cryptax I took this habit after applying this (gold) tutorial, that was an in-house comic 'tips and tricks' at Disney: tumblr.com/fundz64/15089762310… (page 1 shows the problems, page two the solution).
The max area size of the panel is rarely what we can fully use to express the art, character and acting. The space occupied/eaten by the text speechbubbles substracts to the full area of the panel (and usually goes on the top). That's why I prefer now to place it first.
I watched the video before reading your comment so I was already thinking along the lines of, "oh wow sketching with blobs of color, I wonder what the tradeoffs are vs line art".
Now I'm really curious how many different traditions of... for lack of vocabulary, "order of operations" for constructing a piece of art there are.
I would guess a lot but I'm very ignorant in this area.
@kevingranade Thank you. Your intuition is right: a lot! But the main family branches are (imho):
- Sketches/line colored then optionally painted over (the colored drawing workflow)
- Greyscale painting then recolored (the grisaille)
- Direct painting ('Alla prima' family), the one here.
I started painting this way 11 years ago ( youtube.com/watch?v=93lMLEuxSL… ) but I went back to colored drawing because I couldn't paint perspective, anatomy and pose.
Maybe now, with more skill, I can revisit.

@stefan @yuki2501 my opinion of the AI(LLM) situation is that there has been irreversible damage done, the laws on copyright were intentionally circumvented and governments all star struk by tech-bros let them have a "copyright law doesn't apply to you, you must be free to steal to succeed" exception. It is not the technology that is a threat, it is the lawless application of it.
Genuine creativity itself is hugely devalued by the art theft.

Venerdì 30 gennaio primo incontro del laboratorio Fortuitus (come è spiegato qui) ed è stata una gran bella serata: abbiamo cantato due canzonette di tempi passatissimi, siamo riusciti a goderci il testo, a dosare e utilizzare la voce in maniera adatta ed efficace, insomma, va bene, si prosegue con entusiasmo, purtroppo si deve aspettare la fine del mese per il prossimo appuntamento, il 27 febbraio: il gruppo è aperto, e può arrivare chiunque voglia fare esperienza di canto corale senza bisogno di leggere su spartito.
Alla fine di questa settimana, 8 e 9 febbraio, invece, c’è il secondo incontro di Voce e Gregoriano (come è spiegato qui), altra maniera di cantare, altro approccio alla voce: può fare paura, ma faccio di tutto per facilitare l’incontro con i melismi del gregoriano, anche per chi non sia abituato, sempre tenendo sott’occhio quel che la voce può fare o non fare, senza mai danneggiarsi.
Questo mese poi ho un concerto con Dramsam, glorioso gruppo di musica antica goriziano, per rispolverare le musiche di un compositore tra quattro e cinquecento, Petrus Hedus, laude e mottetti. Son curioso, vedremo, se ne riparla.
E poi prosegue lo studio di Venite alla danza, con LaReverdie – a marzo si registra, è il quarantennale del gruppo (io canto e suono con loro da un po’ meno, da, direi, 32 anni). Sul loro sito spiegano del nuovo progetto, c’è anche un crowdfunding, il progetto è grande, se viene supportato è una bella cosa 🙂
Insomma, lasciamo il lungo gennaio alle spalle, e si procede a lavorare, come si dice a Verona, muso duro e bareta fracà, di questi tempi c’è bisogno.
Ci vediamo in giro (o mi venite incontro, io insegno sempre nel mio studio a Verona!).

I know, I know...
When I first started (a week ago), I struggled with understanding the federated nature.
But I just put out a post to ask questions, and people explained things to me, and I was amazed with the awesome community out here!
I agree 😁 I ended up on Reddit rabbit holes and documentation pages to learn some things. This user type will however not search and if they can't ask their friends or family for help, they give up.
Still, steps are taken to make this process more user friendly, which is great!
And: usually you have to hear about a new product a number of times before you try it out. So, many baby steps, one big goal.
@lucien Facebook users might also be more comfortable with Friendica rather than Mastodon.
Maybe collaborate with Friendica developers to get a good beginner's guide for Facebook users going?
When working on such a guide, it's always good to have the view of somebody completely new to the software like yourself.

The Fediverse has a great collection of techies creating the protocols and infrastructure. What we're missing is the folks helping regular people use it.
Hopefully folks like Hannah will start creating that layer. Not just through advocacy, but by hiring staff dedicated to helping people use it.
for me, it took some time to get used to the federated nature.
For example, if I am on my EUPolicy server and I open a link to a mastodon.social profile, I won't be logged into my EUPolicy account and can't directly interact. I have to find them in my search bar. It's not a huge thing, but it lead to some hang-ups.
I was shameless enough to admit I was struggling with this, and people in the comments just walked me through the process. Good community here.

- Server selection onboarding. This is number one, you'll find plenty of posts online with confused users. Though Mastodon works on improving it soon it seems.
- Limited search and discovery (bottlenecked by the server)
- Broken uploads because of dead CDNs
- Confusing 'DM' feature
These all make sense to me and are ok, but casual Joe will struggle.

Well, in my view, DMs would land in an inbox, and create a continuous back and forth between two people.
If I stopped answered to your DMs, you would notice next time you opened your inbox.
Private mentions happen in threads under posts. When I stop answering there, you probably wouldn't notice.
I phrase it like this, because as a girl on the internet... I CAN get creeps in my DMs. So maybe I like that things are a bit more... decentralised here. Makes sense?

Yeah, what the Commission answered here isn't quite what they asked.
But with a generous reading, still an opportunity to promote the Fediverse.
I read it like the person who asked wanted a silo while the EU Commission social media people answered with the actually open alternative. Like even if there were Fedi servers that allow only people verified to be EU citizens (or residents), one could still interact with all the world across servers.
I also think that Mastodon just doesn't have a large marketing budget, that would be useful to get people on board.

I think it's just the toxic culture here. I've seen so many people driven out. There are too many self-righteous, gate-keepy people. On Bluesky, you can at least lock your replies, no wonder people feel safer there.

This might be a small distinction to some, but personally, I think it's a good thing that they verified the account, so that people know whether to report them for what the organization is doing versus for impersonation.

There was a hope that at least some of it was due to Mastodon not showing all replies, so people would keep piling on, but I am not sure that was really the problem.

one cannot blame them at all. Facebook, X, Instagram, and similar platforms owned by large IT companies rely on ease of use and comercial stuff to remain popular.
For good, alternatives like Mastodon remain social because they rely on recommendation rather than profit.
I try to carry my friends here, while looking for new ones (the second, being the easier).
Maybe the social media manager was just a bit too excited about mastodon and looking for a way to promote it.
To be clear, the EU Commission is fine, it's the redacted person demanding the 'citizens-only' one that reads oddly to me.

A nulla valgono le proteste di pochi. Vince il potere, come sempre in Italia. In questo nostro di graziato e conservatore paese servirebbe un risveglio di lotta “dura, senza paura”. Le mediazioni non riescono a portare effetti e ricadute su nulla. Chi detiene il potere riesce a influenzare anche la narrazione della quotidianità.
Questo momento reazionario e regressista si porta dietro una serie di chiusure ad ogni pur minimo cambiamento.
La sconfitta su tutti i fronti è evidente bisogna rinascere.
I vecchi devono farsi avanti raccontando il passato, spingendo i più giovani a pensare, a studiare, a capire.
I più giovani potrebbero essere la forza trainante della rivolta imparando ad opporsi ai soprusi e alle chiusure al cambiamento.
Non bisogna sottovalutare nessun tentativo anche minimo di essere affogati nelle manovre del potere.
Non vanno tollerati più gli svarioni e le scivolate filo fasciste del potere.
Lotta dura senza paura.

Il diritto di cronaca non è diritto di umiliare la vittima. Esiste un dovere etico, prima ancora che professionale: rispettare la dignità delle vittime, soprattutto quando la morte è violenta e il dolore è ancora vivo. Raccontare la cronaca significa dare voce ai fatti, non svestire una persona della sua dignità. Significa ricordare chi era la vittima, non come appariva.
Ma evidentemente il morboso attrae di più
In fondo siamo solo degli animali dotati di un intelletto che non abbiamo saputo usare.

You might want to look into running the software on an old linux version in a VM.
Yes an old Linux is unsupported and probably full of security holes. Don't let the vm talk to the Internet and you should be fine.
@LordCaramac The oldest liveCD I could find was Debian5 from 2009. there are 3 binaries in the tgz. all from 1998!. one is windows the other two are linux. I didn't try compiling. the binary src/sapphire maybe works? I don't know what I am looking at.

It seems to run enough to get a REPL going, but I haven't played with it yet. There's some gnarly pointer/int math going on so who knows how it'll fare in 64-bit land? 😌

I'm much more familiar with Pascal and Python, I suck at Java, and I could probably still do a lot of silly things in GW-BASIC because that's what came with my first MS-DOS PC. I had to learn some Haskell at uni, but I never used it again and forgot almost everything. I also had to learn C++ and forgot most about it, although its similarity to Java means that I probably remember more than I think, but I stink when it comes to C++.
I mostly write single purpose command line tools in Pascal or Python for my own purposes, and most of those get called by bash scripts.
You can compile 32bit if you insist. Many distributions still support it, at least on x86.
Also the way to do the global variable is you put an extern declaration in the header, and non-extern declaration in one C file.
lexyy.c and sapphire in /src can be removed too.
Tested on linuxmint 22.3

The depth of today's software stack, even in OSS, is enormous, and nearly everything is on a mandatory-update treadmill thanks to compiler and runtime developers no longer caring about backward compatibility. And you can't just not update because everything is exposed to network-borne threats (and other stuff you want/need to run requires newer dependencies).
I've gotten saltier about this in the past 20 years.

However, making the tooling to edit such a file format? Making that tooling to the quality level required by art professionals?

I take exception to the line: You don't use open source software because it's better (it usually isn't).
I have been using OSS since the 90's. Back then it might have been true, and there are still some holes in some categories of OSS software, but I wouldn't trade my OSS software for today's closed source software even if someone else was paying for it.
Add to that: If it's open source, even a single author project, if support stops, it is still usable.
The mail client I have been using for the last 28 years has not seen any updates for 4 years. The author disappeared without a trace (probably life happened). It still works. I can still compile it. I can still fix the small issues that are annoying. I know, one day I will have to find a replacement, but today is not the day.. probably not even the year.
Yeah, well. I use open source software because most that I use are better.
So, in my case, they usually are.
Wrong. 100% wrong. I use FOSS because it is better for almost everything in almost every way.
For proprietary software, the only things I ever want to use, are a little Google Drive (mostly for friends) and Acrobat. Really. That's all. And those both suck because of the embedded slop, the slop that I can't remove that would never exist in FOSS because someone would just take it out or fork.
But Open Source isn't so much the point about this message by Adobe.
The point is not to use a Cloud service you do not have control over and not to use software via subscription.
Because you could always use old hardware, an old OS, not being connected to the Internet for safety reasons, to run old software you need. Or you could do it in something like VirtualBox.
Open source, is it easier with that respect? It depends… there is also old open source software that will not run on your current system, because dependencies have changed / cannot be provided any more, and lots of other stuff. And if you do not know how to compile from source, resolving dependencies manually, it's of no use for you.
Anyways… this Adobe message basically means: Better think twice before you marry. People somehow forget common wisdom when it comes to computers.

If you're able-bodied, sure. If you're not, well, too bad for ya, most OSS is terrible for accessibility especially with the typical response of, patch welcome. They're essentially asking disabled users to fix the unusable softwares themselves, completely ignoring the fact that the software isn't accessible, so how are we meant to fix it?

I dunno. I've been using *libre* software for over two decades. I enjoy it for all the reasons.
At this point, I don't know anything about proprietary software other than things like this. It seems to be more closed and restrictive than every. This shows that even the Big Name stuff becomes vaporware.
I don't really understand why anyone uses it. Find something similar, RTFM, watch some videos, and take the time to learn the workflow of the tool. It'll get the job done.
Donate money or hire a dev to work on it if you're well off enough. At least that's possible! Contribute anyway.

This week, I have heard several Americans talk about ICE being similar to the Secret State Police of Nazi Germany, called Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei). La Rivoluzione Dei Blog avvenne poiché le testate tessevano le lodi del Web 2.0, circa 20 anni fa o più.
Sul Fedi invece, questa ondata non sta succedendo, siamo ancora fermi all'adozione nerd. Nonostante siano passati ormai tre anni abbondanti dalla prima diaspora significativa (Musk che distrugge twitter)
Diversamente, farei notare che "quattro gatti" è la dimensione adatta per costruire relazioni di valore. Sono le dimensioni del consumo di massa che non sono sostenibili.

Libri che ricordo con molto amore e che ti consiglio se mai ti andasse di leggerli:
Ronja appunto, è una bella storia, di Astrid Lindgren.
L'Ultima Lilliput, libro meraviglioso che ogni tanto rileggo con piacere ancora adesso e quasi sconosciuto per lo meno in Italia, autore: Terence Hanbury White.
Poi vabbeh...avevo un affetto speciale per L'Incompreso perchè sentivo molta affinità e poi vuoi mettere la tragedia! (ora ho un po' meno il gusto del tragico).
(Poi se volessimo far deragliare il thread sull'argomento: i libri per ragazzi che hai amato avrei un lungo e molto vario elenco, ma noi non vogliamo deragliare il thread...non vogliamo vero?)

Ronja e L'Ultima Lilliput devo leggerli, non l'ho mai fatto. Dell'incompreso, invece, conservo un ricordo spiacevole - ma, forse, perché l'avevo detestato da ragazzina e non l'ho mai più toccato crescendo.
Circa il *deragliamento*, alcuni dei libri più belli mai scritti vengono pubblicati come "Libri per ragazzi", uno su tutti " Mai gridare al lupo" di Mowat.

Tra i libri per adulti che mi sono stati regalati come letteratura per ragazzi ricordo "Cronache Marziane".
Insomma..allora vado con l'elenco! 😁
Preciso che sono i libri che mi piacevano molto...credo tra gli 8 e i 12 anni, li metto in ordine sparso senza il filtro di giudizio della me adultə.
"Lobo e altre storie di animali selvatici", Ernesto Thomson Seton, editore Antonio Vallardi, agosto 1948. Non ho veramente idea se esistano altre edizioni o ristampe. È un libro bellissimo, selvaggio, per niente edulcorato, sulla vita degli animali. Scritto da un cacciatore credo - bisogna considerare il periodo - che amava più osservare che cacciare.
Kipling: "Il libro della giungla", "Capitani coraggiosi", "Kim".
Dumas: "Vent'anni dopo". È il seguito de "I tre moschettieri", in realtà il capitolo meno conosciuto della saga, paradossalmente è più conosciuto l'ultimo capitolo ("Il Visconte di Bragelonne") che è il tomo ponderosissimo di cui si conoscono soprattuto le vicende della cosiddetta maschera di ferro.
Poi, fammi pensare...
Salgari, tutto il ciclo dei Pirati della Malesia, soprattuto "I Misteri della Giungla Nera".
Per stare su cose meno classiche e tempi più moderni, la collana per ragazzi Einaudi aveva alcune perle di cui purtroppo ricordo il titolo ma non l'autore:
"Rafè e Micropiede", "Il Pennacchio", "I Paggi dell'Imperatore".
"Il Branco della Rosa Canina", Salani Narrativa, anche di questo non ricordo l'autore. Insieme a "Lobo" mi ha insegnato molto sulla natura selvaggia.
Poi naturalmente Ende, "La Storia Infinita" e soprattutto "Momo".
Vale la pena menzionare che ero unə grande appassionatə di Western, soprattutto mi piaceva la storia di Fort Alamo.
E uhm...avevo un libro "Fate" illustrato da Alan Lee che è la fonte della mia passione per miti, leggende e folklore.
Mi pare basta, c'era un sacco di altra roba, ma vabbeh...mi fermo. Questi erano i preferiti.

@ju i miei preferiti, che segnalo di corsa visto non li hai menzionati, sono "Il Corsaro Nero" (perché ci sono affezionata, è stato il primo libro *scelto e comprato da me*, coi soldi della paghetta, e letto tutto da sola) e la trilogia degli antenati di Calvino: amore totale per Cosimo!
Poi, va be', Rodari a piene mani, a partire dalle "Favole al telefono".
Kipling e Salgari, concordo con te, così come pure "Momo".

I libri sui Corsari di Salgari non li ho letti perchè per motivi incomprensibili mi sembravano noiosi i pirati, quelli dei Caraibi, al contrario di quelli del Borneo che invece eh...tutta n'altra roba! 😅

I think most cishet men are not much like you. I expect that most otherwise unattached straight guys would take the W and build the foundation at their leisure. Dissento sul fatto che ciò renda necessaria una nuova stretta securitaria, preannunciata da esponenti del Governo.
Un Governo che, sin dal suo insediamento, non fa altro che aumentare reati e pene, evidentemente senza successo. E insiste. Valutare preventivamente gli impatti di certi provvedimenti, e poi verificarli ex post, mai?
