Test Pattern Generator for SCART and RGB TVs
CRTs don’t last forever, and neither do the electronics that drive them. When you have a screen starting to go wonky, then you need a way to troubleshoot which is at fault. A great tool for that is a pattern generator, but they’re not the easiest to come by these days. [baritonomarchetto] needed a pattern generator to help repair his favourite arcade machine, and decided to make his own DIY Portable RGB CRT Test Pattern Generator.
While he does cite [Nicholas Murray]’s RP2040 test pattern generator as a starting point (which itself builds on the PicoVGA library once featured here), he couldn’t just build one. That worthy project only outputs VGA and because [baritonomarchetto] is in Europe, he needed a SCART connector. Since he’s working on arcade machines, he needed non-SCART RGB signals, too. The arcade signals need to be at higher voltages (TLL level) than the RGB signal you’d find in SCART and VGA.
The upshot is while he’s using [Nicholas]’s code for the RP2040, he’s rolled his own PCB, including a different resistor ladders to provide the correct voltages depending on if he’s dealing with a home TV or arcade CRT. To make life easier, the whole thing runs off a 9V battery.

Haasoscope Pro: Open-Everything 2 GHz USB Oscilloscope
Our hacker [haas] is at it again with the Haasoscope Pro, a full redesign of the original Haasoscope, which was a successful Crowd Supply campaign back in 2018.
This new Pro version was funded on Crowd Supply in April this year and increases the bandwidth from 60 MHz to 2 GHz, the vertical resolution from 8 to 12 bits, and the sample rate from 125 MS/s to 3.2 GS/s. Selling for $999 it claims to be the first open-everything, affordable, high-bandwidth, real-time sampling USB oscilloscope.
The firmware and software are under active development and a new version was released yesterday.
The hardware has an impressive array of features packed into a slick aluminum case with quiet 40 mm internal fan and 220 x 165 x 35 mm (8.66 x 6.5 x 1.38 in) form-factor weighing in at 0.9 kg (1.98 lbs). Also available is an active probe supporting up to 2 GHz analog bandwidth.
The Haasoscope Pro is miles ahead of alternatives such as this USB oscilloscope from back in 2010 and you can find a bunch of support material on GitHub: drandyhaas/HaasoscopePro.

Unobtanium No More; Perhaps We Already Have All The Elements We Need
It’s been a trope of the news cycle over the past decade or so, that there’s some element which we all need but which someone else has the sole supply, and that’s a Bad Thing. It’s been variously lithium, or rare earth elements, and the someone else is usually China, which makes the perfect mix of ingredients for a good media scare story. Sometimes these things cross from the financial pages to the geopolitical stage, even at times being cited in bellicose language. But is there really a shortage?
The Colorado School of Mines say perhaps not, as they’ve released a paper from an American perspective pointing out that the USA already has everything it needs but perhaps doesn’t realize it. We’re surprised it seems to have passed unnoticed in a world preoccupied with such matters.
We’ve covered a few stories about mineral shortages ourselves, and some of them even point to the same conclusion reached by the School of Mines, that those mineral riches lie not in the mines of China but in the waste products closer to American industry. In particular they point to the tailings from existing mines, a waste product of which there is a huge quantity to hand, and which once stripped of the metal they were mined for still contain enough of the sought-after ones to more than satisfy need.
The history of mining from medieval lead miners processing Roman tailings to 19th century gold miners discovering that their tailings were silver ore and on to the present day, includes many similar stories. Perhaps the real story is economic both in the publicity side and the mining side, a good scare story sells papers, and it’s just cheaper to buy your molybdenum from China rather than make your own. We’ll keep you posted if we see news of a tailings bonanza in the Rockies.

Finally, we discuss the detection of spicy shrimp, and marvel at the history of email.

Imagining the CPS-1: An Early 70s 4-bit Microcomputer from Canada
[Michael Gardi] wrote in to let us know about his project: CPS-1: Imagining An Early 70s 4-bit Microcomputer.
The CPS-1 was the first Canadian microprocessor-based computer. It was built by Microsystems International Ltd. (MIL) in Ottawa between 1972 and 1973 and it is unknown how many were made and in what configurations. The CPS-1 supported a 12-bit address bus and a 4-bit data bus. MIL also developed the supporting hardware including RAM. The processor was called the MIL 7114.
[Michael] worked in collaboration with [Zbigniew Stachniak] from York University Computer Museum. [Zbigniew] had developed a MIL CPS-1 Emulator and [Michael]’s job was to implement a front panel hardware interface for the emulator which runs on a Raspberry Pi. The only complication: there are no remaining CPS-1 computers, and no known photographs, so no one can say for sure what a real front panel might have looked like!
With a bit of guess work and 3D printing, as well as some inspiration from contemporaneous hardware such as the DEC PDP-11, [Michael] came up with an implementation. He used an IO extender HAT which adds 32 IO pins to the existing Pi GPIO pins that are accessible via an 3-wire I2C interface. This was enough hardware to support the 26 switches and 29 LEDs on the panel. There’s a brief demo of the custom printed switches in the video embedded below.

"Se i danesi dovessero riuscire a farla passare a ottobre, la nostra unica possibilità è che il Parlamento difenda la crittografia nei negoziati del trilogo", ha dichiarato a TechRadar Callum Voge, direttore degli Affari governativi e della difesa presso l'Internet Society.
Dopo oltre tre anni di lavoro, il destino delle chat crittografate in Europa è tutt'altro che deciso. Il 12 settembre 2025, gli Stati membri dell'UE hanno dovuto condividere la loro posizione definitiva sull'ultima versione della proposta di Regolamento sugli abusi sessuali sui minori (CSAR).
Ancora una volta, il disegno di legge non è riuscito a ottenere il sostegno necessario. La percezione, il linguaggio e le capacità cognitive sono processi profondamente modulati da fattori genetici e neurobiologici. Fenomeni come autismo, dislessia, balbuzie e sinestesia rappresentano laboratori privilegiati per comprendere la variabilità percettiva e cognitiva umana. Sebbene non esista un gene unico che colleghi tutte queste condizioni, la ricerca genetica ha identificato numerose regioni e varianti geniche condivise, che influenzano sviluppo corticale, connettività neuronale e integrazione multisensoriale.
Questa revisione integrata mira a delineare le relazioni genetiche e neurocognitive tra i quattro fenomeni, con un approccio basato su evidenze scientifiche, osservazioni cliniche e studi di neuroimaging.
𝐁. 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐨 𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚

Alterazioni nei geni della balbuzie influenzano pianificazione motoria del linguaggio, tempo di elaborazione fonologica e capacità di integrazione sensoriale-uomo-ambiente, sovrapponendosi in parte ai meccanismi dell’autismo e della dislessia.
𝐄. 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚
La sinestesia, esperienza percettiva in cui stimoli sensoriali evocano percezioni in altri sensi, ha basi genetiche emergenti:
- GABRB3: regolazione della plasticità sinaptica, modulazione dei circuiti sensoriali.
- Regione cromosoma 2: associata alla sinestesia uditivo-visiva.
- Studi su sinesteti: identificazione di varianti familiari e ereditarie, suggerendo un modello poligenico.
𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞
La sinestesia può condividere percorsi con autismo e dislessia, specialmente nei domini di integrazione multisensoriale, attenzione selettiva e memoria associativa.

- CNTNAP2: comune ad autismo, balbuzie e, in parte, dislessia.
- SHANK3 e NRXN1: formano la base sinaptica condivisa tra autismo e sinestesia.
- FOXP2: implicato in linguaggio e fluenza verbale, con ramificazioni in dislessia.
- GABRB3: modulazione sinaptica e integrazione percettiva.
- DYX1C1, KIAA0319, DCDC2, ROBO1: influenzano migrazione neuronale e connettività corticale, con implicazioni in più fenotipi neurocognitivi.
Queste interconnessioni indicano che, pur non esistendo un singolo gene “concatenante”, esistono reti genetiche e neurocognitive sovrapposte che modellano percezione, linguaggio e integrazione sensoriale.

- Strategie educative individualizzate che considerino punti di forza e debolezze sensoriali.
- Ricerca translazionale per lo sviluppo di approcci terapeutici mirati.

L’analisi integrata di autismo, dislessia, balbuzie e sinestesia evidenzia la complessità della variabilità cognitiva e percettiva umana. Sebbene non esista un gene unico che colleghi tutti i fenomeni, l’interazione di reti genetiche condivise offre insight fondamentali su neuroplasticità, integrazione sensoriale e sviluppo linguistico, aprendo nuove strade per ricerca, educazione e clinica.

Through the Spyglass: False Gods
Things have certainly felt easier in these United States. It isn’t often where you feel so much happening all at once. It’s more than disorienting when it feels like everything is burning.
Billy Joel once famously pointed out, “We didn’t start the fire. It was always burning since the world’s been turning… no, we didn’t light it, but we tried to fight it.”
That song served its purpose; show the world that times have always been crazy. It appears to have been a successful venture in retrospect, with the song having earned him a Grammy nomination and the number one space on the Billboard Hot 100.
The people heard it and loved it, with the idea of the ever-burning world putting itself in the subconscious of many. People now widely take for granted “Well, the world has always been crazy.”
We won’t be discussing Fall Out Boy’s hackjob here.
But there are times where things are especially crazy, and I think we are living in those times today.
Famously, the aforementioned song starts in 1949. Which would be post-World Wars. We often take for granted that the world burning is meant to show it always has been, but it’s those moments when the world is eating itself alive do we need to focus out proper attentions on.
There are plenty of points in history you can point to and see how bad things can get. There are watershed moments that shape the trajectory entire world. It is the explosion that we often remember in history; the World Wars, the US Civil War, even the Revolutionary War. We are taught about the build up to the explosion.
Strangely, we often glorify it.
There is no doubt in my mind that we are heading in a direction we may not be able to come back from if we don’t address it now. We might not have reached that point of no return yet, but I fear just how close we might be.
Let’s take a moment to understand the situation we find ourselves in.
Nearly two weeks ago, as of the posting of this article, a 16 year old who was radicalized online and expressed neo-Nazi views shot and critically injured two students at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, CO before committing suicide.
You might not have heard about that because, that same day, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed.
Two weeks before that, a gunman opened fire at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis during morning mass, killing 2 and injuring 21 before committing suicide.
You may have heard about that one, because much of the narrative was spent around the fact that the gunman was trans.
Also in Minnesota, two months before that, Democratic politicians Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman were shot, with Rep. Hortman and her husband succumbing to their wounds.
Of course, I could keep jumping back and back and naming incidents. But there’s two that happened after Charlie Kirk’s death that got lost in the shuffle.
The first was the black student at Delta State University who was found hanged from a tree. This immediately conjured up images of lynchings in the Deep South. Many felt panic, wondering if this was retaliation.
The same day, a white man in Vicksburg was also found hanging from a tree. Being homeless, many wrote that off as a perhaps understandable suicide. But in a state with a history of lynchings, and with tensions on the raise, one could never really know for sure one way or the other if these are connected or if these incidents are indeed lynchings.
In this political climate, I’m not willing to commit to saying I know for sure. But in this political climate, it has become increasingly clear how capable we are of turning on each other.
The second incident I want to mention comes from a supporter within our party. They shared with us that their friend was attacked in Renton, WA by a group of teenagers hurling homophobic insults.
This is unambiguous. This is a hate crime.
This cannot happen.
What is becoming of our countrymen? Growing up, the “Land of the Free” really did feel like the ultimate goal. It felt as though we were getting there. Perhaps it is the optimism of a 12 year old who remembers Obama selling us “Hope”, but it felt like our troubled past might remain there and that our future might truly be bright.
Of course, it wasn’t really that way and things didn’t suddenly take a turn for the worst. This has not happened in a vacuum.
When this country ended apartheid in the United States, which we gently and more kindly referred to as “segregation”, we were perhaps on track to better correct the issues faced following the failures of Reconstruction. The country had the chance to move forward from its past and start anew and do it right.
Instead, we elected Ronald Reagan, an opponent of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, to President in 1980.
The Republicans enjoyed the White House until 1993 when Bill Clinton took over. It was during the Clinton administration that the second player in this fold comes into play: Newt Gingrich.
These two men, in my view, took an unwillingness to change with the times and turned it into a full-blown Culture War, with their Republican Party as the aggressors.
That Culture War has spiraled. It has gone beyond making Democrats look bad. It’s well past blocking Obama’s agenda. It has developed into US citizens attacking and fighting one another.
We, as countrymen within these United States, have forgotten who our enemy is. The trans person is not your enemy. The Catholic is not your enemy. The people who work for a living are not your enemy.
It is those in power, those that refuse to lose and let go of that power, as well as those who want a piece of and to be apart of that power, that stoke the division into us. The Powers That Be who want us angry and against each other instead of them.
Right now, for all intents and purposes, it is working.
This might not mean much to you now. This might not mean much in a few years when this becomes a time capsule for the political atmosphere in 2025. But it cannot go on with us watching idly and saying nothing.
The Pirate Party, in our platform, promises to make sure that our government is transparent and accountable to the people. But we have a responsibility to hold ourselves accountable to each other.
We, the citizens of these United States of America, cannot turn to violence among one another. You have far more in common with a trans person from the city as a farmer from the sticks than you do with Elon Musk. Your black neighbor will understand you better than Donald Trump could.
Let us never forget who is behind this divide. The Republican Party and the right wing in this country are not “punk rock”, they are not “counterculture”. They hold every major branch of government. They are the government. While I hold contempt in my heart of the spineless democrats who not only allow it to happen, but also emboldened the worse candidates via the Pied Piper strategy, the blame does fall squarely to a group longing for a pre-Civil Rights era.
Do not fall for their propaganda. Remember that they want you divided. Remind them that we are the United States and they are subservient to us, not the other way around.
Love thy neighbor. Beware of false gods.

“Sospensione” a tempo indeterminato per lo show di Jimmy Kimmel. Lo annuncia ABC, che di fatto “silura” uno dei suoi volti più popolari, star dell’intrattenimento della tarda serata TV. Kimmel, in trasmissione, aveva detto: “Abbiamo toccato nuovi minimi nel fine settimana, con la banda MAGA che cerca disperatamente di caratterizzare questo ragazzo che ha assassinato Charlie Kirk come qualcosa di diverso da uno di loro, e fa tutto il possibile per ottenerne vantaggi politici”. La sospensione dello show di Jimmy Kimmel è stata chiesta direttamente da Brendan Carr, avvocato, vicino a Donald Trump, chairman della Federal Communication Commission, l’agenzia responsabile di controlli e regolamentazioni del mondo dell’audiovisivo. Carr ha minacciato ABC – quindi la sua proprietà, Disney – di ritiro della licenza, nel caso non fossero stati presi provvedimenti contro Kimmel – che non è peraltro l’unica vittima della nuova, difficile fase nei rapporti tra media e governo americano. CBS ha chiuso il programma di Stephen Colbert, altro ospite della tarda serata americana, altro critico feroce di Trump. Il presidente ha appena chiesto al New York Times 15 miliardi di danni per averne messo in discussione la “reputazione personale e professionale”. Sempre ABC e CBS, nei mesi scorsi, si erano piegati a pagare 16 milioni di dollari al presidente in cause piuttosto pretestuose. L’omicidio di Charlie Kirk ha ulteriormente rafforzato la stretta repressiva. Il Washington Post ha licenziato una sua opinionista, Karen Attiah, che ha accusato la destra di “doppio standard razziale” nella morte di Kirk. MSNBC ha allontanato un suo analista, Matthew Dowd, che ha chiamato Kirk divisivo. Sono vicende che arrivano nel momento in cui le grandi corporation hanno bisogno del via libera dell’amministrazione per le loro strategie. Dalla fusione di Paramount Skydance e Warner Bros sta per nascere il più grande conglomerato americano della comunicazione – da CNN al cinema a MTV a TikTok – controllato da Larry Ellison, magnate e finanziatore della destra americana, intimo di Benjamin Netanyahu. Giudice USA ordina espulsione del leader pro‐Palestina

24 MILA FIRME CONTRO I POTERI SPECIALI DI GUALTIERI
Il 23 e 24 settembre dalle 12.00 alle 18.00 l'Unione dei Comitati contro l'inceneritore sarà in presidio a Piazza Capranica, alle spalle di Montecitorio, perché le 24 mila firme raccolte contro i poteri speciali di Gualtieri sono il nostro biglietto da visita per la due giorni di mobilitazioni a Roma.
Le 24 mila firme chiedono alle due Camere del Parlamento che Gualtieri, al pari di ogni cittadino della Repubblica, sia tenuto al rispetto delle leggi, nel suo caso di tutte quelle di settore. Prima di ogni altra normativa chiediamo che sia tenuto al rispetto del testo unico ambientale perché è inconcepibile che si possa fare un impianto di incenerimento che brucerà 600mila tonnellate per oltre 30 anni senza rispettare il codice dell'ambiente che disciplina, tra l'altro, l'intera materia dei rifiuti, impianti compresi.
Le migliaia di persone che hanno sottoscritto la petizione hanno riposto fiducia nell'istituzione parlamentare. La prossima settimana saremo quindi in presidio rivolgendoci alla Camera dei deputati, un'assemblea legislativa differente da quella che ha convertito il decreto legge n. 50/22. In più circostanze la famigerata norma attributiva dei poteri speciali, articolo 13, è stata oggetto di discussione e votazioni senza però portare mai a una modifica normativa. Ora che però il Giubileo sta per concludersi, motivo alla base dell'attribuzione dei poteri speciali è necessario mettere termine alla stagione di un Gualtieri posto, dalla legge stessa, al di sopra delle leggi. Come Unione dei Comitati abbiamo il dovere di far valere ognuna di quelle 24 mila firme.
Alle deputate e ai deputati, di maggioranza come di minoranza, chiediamo la modifica normativa per ripristinare il diritto che con l'articolo 13 del DL n.50/2022 è stato irrimediabilmente leso laddove conferisce al Sindaco di Roma potere assoluto.
Per le bambine e i bambini che hanno aperto i nostri due cortei estivi e per tutti noi che abbiamo il diritto di vivere liberi dai veleni di Roma, chiediamo che il Parlamento ripristini la giustizia modificando la norma affinché anche Gualtieri finalmente rispetti le leggi.

e nell'articolo indicato dove sono esattamente le informazioni. un elenco degli additivi indicando additivo per additivo l'effetto e quali hanno un nome strano ma sono comunque prodotti direttamente presi da sostanza già trovare in natura? e invece gli accostamenti tra cibi?
è come quando si demonizzano le bevande (quelle gassate naturalmente, non si sa perché, sono le peggiori) facendo vedere immagini del contenuto di zucchero senza neppure riferirsi a prodotti specifici.
non si costruisce un mondo migliore e più consapevole spaventando, ma informando.
si insegna a leggere le etichette, a distinguere gli additivi sani (e ce ne sono), da quelli sospetti a quelli sicuramente dannosi. si specificano i dosaggi dei vari additivi e si indica a seconda del dosaggio quali sono le dosi di prodotto consigliate, tollerate e da evitare.
per le bevande si insegna a leggere l'etichetta.
a distinguere tra ciò che ha il sapore di zucchero ed è zucchero, a magari ciò che ha un sapore dolce ma è una proteina.
insomma. si informa. con pazienza. e non si fa solo terrorismo psicologico indiscriminato.
e perché? perché

Clemson University in South Carolina fired multiple members of its faculty after investigating their Kirk-related social media posts. On Monday the state’s Attorney General sent the college a letter telling it that the first amendment did not protect the fired employees and that the state would not defend them. Two universities in Tennessee fired multiple members of the staff after getting complaints about their social media posts. The University of Mississippi let a member of the staff go because they re-shared a comment about Kirk that people found “insensitive.” Florida Atlantic University placed an art history professor on administrative leave after she posted about Kirk on social media. Florida's education commissioner later wrote a letter to school superintendents warning them there would be consequences for talking about Kirk in the wrong way. “Govern yourselves accordingly,” the letter said.AAUP’s advice is meant to help academic workers avoid ending up as a news story. “In a moment when it is becoming increasingly difficult to predict the consequences of our online speech and choices, we hope you will find these strategies and resources helpful,” it said.
Here are its five explicit tips: “1. Set your personal social media accounts to private mode. When prompted, approve the setting to make all previous posts private. 2. Be mindful that anything you post online can be screenshotted and shared. 3. Before posting or reposting online commentary, pause and ask yourself: a. Am I comfortable with this view potentially being shared with my employer, my students, or the public? Have I (or the person I am reposting) expressed this view in terms I would be comfortable sharing with my employer, my students, or the public?”
The advice continues: “4. In your social media bios, state that the views expressed through the account represent your own opinions and not your employer. You do not need to name your employer. Consider posting positive statements about positions you support rather than negative statements about positions you disagree with. Some examples could be: ‘Academic freedom is nonnegotiable,’ ‘The faculty united will never be divided,’ ‘Higher ed research saves lives,’ ‘Higher ed transforms lives,’ ‘Politicians are interfering with your child’s education.’”
The AAUPthen provides five digital safety tips that include setting up strong passwords, installing software updates as soon as they’re available, using two-factor authentication, and never using employer email addresses outside of work.
The last tip is the most revealing of how academics might be harassed online through campaigns like Turning Point USA’s “Professor Watchlist.” “Search for your name in common search engines to find out what is available about you online,” AAUP advises. “Put your name in quotation marks to narrow the search. Search both with and without your institution attached to your name.”
After that, the AAUP provided a list of trauma, counseling, and insurance services that its members have access to and a list of links to other pieces of information about protecting themselves.
“It’s good basic advice given that only a small number of faculty have spent years online in my experience, it’s a good place to start,” Pauline Shanks Kaurin, the former military ethics professor at the U.S. Naval War College told 404 Media. Kaurin resigned her position at the college earlier this year after realizing that the college would not defend academic freedom during Trump’s second term.
“I think this reflects the heightened level of scrutiny and targeting that higher ed is under,” Kaurin said. “While it’s not entirely new, the scale is certainly aided by many platforms and actors that are engaging on [social media] now when in the past faculty might have gotten threatening phone calls, emails and hard copy letters.”
The AAUP guidance was co-written by Isaac Kamola, an associate professor at Trinity College and the director of the AAUP’s Center for Academic Freedom. Kamola told 404 Media that the recommendations came for years of experience working with faculty who’ve been on the receiving end of targeted harassment campaigns. “That’s incredibly destabilizing,” he said. “It’s hard to explain what it’s like until it happens to you.”
Kamola said that academic freedom was already under threat before Kirk’s death. “It’s a multi-decade strategy of making sure that certain people, certain bodies, certain dies, are not in higher education, so that certain other ones can be, so that you can reproduce the ideas that a political apparatus would prefer existed in a university,” he said.
It’s telling that the AAUP felt the need to publish this, but the advice is practical and actionable, even for people outside of academia. Freedom of expression is under attack in America and though academics and other public figures are perhaps under the most threat, they aren’t the only ones. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon is actively monitoring the social media activity of military personnel as well as civilian employees of the Department of Defense.
“It is unacceptable for military personnel and Department of War civilians to celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American,” Sean Parnell, public affairs officer at the Pentagon, wrote on X, using the new nickname for the Department of Defense. In the private sector, Sony fired one of its video game developers after they made a joke on X about Kirk’s death and multiple journalists have been fired for Kirk related comments.
AAUP did not immediately respond to 404 Media’s request for comment.
