NEC V20: The Original PC Processor Upgrade
In the early 1980s, there was the IBM PC, with its 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 processor. It was an unexpected hit for the company, and within a few years there were a host of competitors. Every self-respecting technology corporation wanted a piece of the action including processor manufacturers, and among those was NEC with their V20 chip and its V30 sibling. From the outside they were faster pin-compatible 8088 and 8086 clones, but internally they could also run both 8080 and 80186 code. [The Silicon Underground] has a look back at the V20, with some technical details, history, and its place as a PC upgrade.
For such a capable part it’s always been a surprise here that it didn’t take the world by storm, and the article sheds some light on this in the form of an Intel lawsuit that denied it a critical early market access. By the time it was available in quantity the PC world had moved on from the 8088, so we saw it in relatively few machines. It was a popular upgrade for those in the know back in the day though as it remains in 2025, and aside from its immediate speed boost there are a few tricks it lends to a classic PC clone. The version of DOS that underpinned Windows 95 won’t run on an 8086 or 8088 because it contains 8016 instructions, but a V20 can run it resulting in a much faster DOS experience. One to remember, if an early PC or clone cones your way.

Il contante è uno strumento “essenziale” per gestire i periodi di crisi, al punto che le autorità di diversi Paesi suggeriscono di “dotarsi di una riserva di contanti che consenta di effettuare gli acquisti essenziali per diversi giorni”: per esempio “le autorità di Paesi Bassi, Austria e Finlandia suggeriscono di detenere importi compresi approssimativamente fra 70 e 100 euro per ogni membro della famiglia, o sufficienti a coprire i bisogni essenziali per circa 72 ore”. A scriverlo è la Banca centrale Europa, nel suo bollettino economico, in cui è presente un’analisi titolata: “Keep calm and carry cash: indicazioni tratte da quattro crisi sul ruolo unico della moneta fisica”.

Papa Leone XIV ha chiamato don Marco Billeri, sacerdote della diocesi di San Miniato, come suo secondo segretario personale. Lo ha annunciato il vescovo di San Miniato, mons. Giovanni Paccosi, in una lettera alla diocesi. “Per la nostra diocesi – scrive – è un grande dono: pensare che un prete suo figlio possa sostenere così da vicino la missione di Pietro è qualcosa di inimmaginabile. Così è stato per me quando, mercoledì scorso, Papa Leone ha voluto chiedermi personalmente, per telefono, la disponibilità a lasciarlo partire. D’impeto gli ho detto: ‘Grazie, Santo Padre’. Certo, ho provato gioia e vertigine, pensando che don Marco da ora sarà nel cuore della Chiesa di Cristo, anche se questo implica per me rinunciare a un amico e a un collaboratore inestimabile”. Ordinato nel 2016, don Billeri ha poi conseguito il dottorato in Diritto canonico a Roma. È stato giudice presso il Tribunale ecclesiastico della Toscana, difensore del vincolo presso i tribunali di San Miniato e Volterra, cerimoniere vescovile e segretario del Consiglio presbiterale. Finora viceparroco della parrocchia dei Santi Stefano e Martino a San Miniato Basso, ora dovrà “affrontare una nuova tappa della sua vocazione, al servizio del Vicario di Cristo”. Il vescovo invita la diocesi a pregare per lui e per tutta la Chiesa diocesana, “per crescere, in questo legame ora ancora più stretto con il Papa e la Chiesa universale, nella coscienza della nostra missione”.

Castelnovo Monti, per Gaza
In dialogo con l’Assessora con delega ai Diritti e alla Pace del Comune di Castelnovo Monti, Silvia Dallaporta, abbiamo pensato che fosse opportuno sostenere i nostri cittadini e le nostre cittadine nel loro operato per sensibilizzare sulla Palestina, come già fanno da maggio ’25 con i “Sabati per Gaza”, e abbiamo pensato di farlo continuando la lettura di alcuni nomi dei bambini uccisi nel corso del Genocidio in atto prima di alcuni momenti culturali e non solo.
L’idea è quella che anche altri eventi possano prevedere momenti simili, ovviamente senza sentirsi costretti nel farlo, per non dissociarci mai dalla realtà che ci circonda.
Sicuramente ci sarà chi dirà: “Ma ci sono anche altre guerre in corso, perché non parlate mai di quelle?”.
Io rispondo che, purtroppo, Gaza è diventata il simbolo di tutte quelle guerre che vi sono nel mondo, un simbolo potente della debolezza dei governi, ma della forza dei popoli come costruttori di pace; è diventata un simbolo di immobilismo politico dettato dall’economia e al contempo di marcia unitaria dei popoli dettata dalla coscienza internazionale di non poter più accettare ipocrisia e diseguaglianze.
Uniti e unite sempre nella lotta e nella costruzione della giustizia, uniti e unite nel costruire un futuro concretamente migliore e di speranza.

Bluetooth Earrings Pump Out The Tunes
When you think of a Bluetooth speaker, you’re probably picturing a roughly lunchbox-sized device that pumps out some decent volume for annoying fellow beachgoers, hikers, or public transport users. [Matt Frequencies] has developed something in an altogether different form factor—tiny Bluetooth speakers you can dangle from your earlobes! They’re called Earrays, and they’re awesome.
The build started with [Matt] harvesting circuit boards from a pair of off-the-shelf Bluetooth earbuds. These are tiny, and perfect for picking up a digital audio stream from a smartphone or other device, but they don’t have the grunt to drive powerful speakers. Thus, [Matt] hooked them up to a small Adafruit PAM8302A amplifier board, enabling them to drive some larger speaker drivers that you can actually hear from a distance. These were then installed in little 3D printed housings that are like a tiny version of the speaker arrays you might see hanging from the rigging at a major dance festival. Throw on a little earring hook, and you’ve got a pair of wearable Bluetooth speakers that are both functional, fashionable, and very audible!
[Matt] has continued to develop the project, even designing a matching pendant and a charging base to make them practical to use beyond a proof-of concept. Despite the weight of the included electronics, they’re perfectly wearable, as demonstrated by [DJ Kaizo Trap] modelling the hardware in the images seen here.
We’ve seen plenty of great LED earrings over the years, but very few jewelry projects in the audio space thus far. Perhaps that will change in future—if you pursue such goals, let us know!

Si costruisca la “Piccola Pace” per giungere a concepire la “Grande Pace”. Questo potrebbe essere il riassunto di quanto uscito dai confronti con Giovani Costruttrici e Costruttori di Pace, di cui sono orgogliosamente parte, in questa quattro giorni svoltasi ad Assisi con il fine di organizzare la Marcia per la Pace Perugia-Assisi del 12 ottobre di quest’anno, ma anche per organizzare i pensieri e le azioni di tutte e tutti noi come attivisti e attiviste per la Pace a cui ho partecipato come Consigliere comunale di Castelnovo Monti con delega alla Cultura, ai Diritti e alla Pace e come esponente di Possibile.
La mattina del 30 agosto sono intervenuto alla presenza di altri amministratori e amministratrici locali ricordando che il punto fondamentale per costruire la “Grande Pace”, quella tra stati, è necessario costruire anche la “Piccola Pace”, quella interna alle nostre comunità, siano esse un’aula scolastica o un Comune da amministrare.
Mi sono soffermato anche su una visione diversa delle città in cui viviamo, che spesso si rivelano essere il primo limite fisico al dialogo, per una mancanza di luoghi in cui poter avere uno scambio partecipativo e per come esse vengono ideate, con una sottesa discriminazione e ghettizzazione delle minoranze che crea aree di disagio e abbandono che portano alla creazione della violenza, la quale viene soppressa con ulteriore violenza.
Per creare la pace bisogna creare le condizioni fondamentali perché sia presente prima di tutto nelle nostre comunità e quindi adoperarsi per la giustizia sociale, perché tutti e tutte abbiano le stesse opportunità e gli stessi diritti civili, sociali e politici.
Infine, è fondamentale insistere sul rispetto del diritto internazionale, perché le Organizzazioni Internazionali oramai troppo spesso si trovano a spendere parole che si perdono nel vento contro le violenze nei conflitti. Una riforma profondamente democratica dell’ONU potrebbe dare più forza alla pace e alla giustizia.
Partecipiamo tutte e tutti il 12 ottobre alla Marcia per la Pace, perché il messaggio dev’essere chiaro al mondo intero: la Pace è un diritto di tutti e tutte, la guerra una scelta di pochi.

Whither the Chip Shortage?
Do you remember the global chip shortage? Somehow it seems so long ago, but it’s not even really been three years yet. Somehow, I had entirely forgotten about it, until two random mentions about it popped up in short succession, and brought it all flooding back like a repressed bad dream.
Playing the role of the ghost-of-chip-shortage-past was a module for a pair of FPV goggles. There are three versions of the firmware available for download at the manufacturer’s website, and I had to figure out which I needed. I knew it wasn’t V1, because that was the buggy receiver PCB that I had just ordered the replacement for. So it was V2 or V3, but which?
Digging into it, V2 was the version that fixed the bug, and V3 was the redesign around a different microcontroller chip, because they couldn’t get the V2 one during the chip shortage.
I saw visions of desperate hackers learning new toolchains, searching for alternative parts, finding that they could get that one chip, but that there were only 20 of them left and they were selling for $30 instead of $1.30. I know a lot of you out there were designing through these tough couple years, and you’ve all probably got war stories.
And yet here we are, definitively post-chip-shortage. How can you be sure? A $30 vape pen includes a processor that we would have killed for just three years ago. The vape includes a touchscreen, just because. And it even has a Bluetooth LE chip that it’s not even using. My guess is that the hardware designers just put it in there hoping that the firmware team would get around to using it for something.
This vape has 16 MB of external SPI Flash! During the chip shortage, we couldn’t even get 4 MB SPI flash.
It’s nice to be on the other side of the chip shortage. Just order whatever parts you want and you get them, but don’t take for granted how luxurious that feels. Breathe easy, and design confidently. You can finally use that last genuine STM32F103 blue pill board without fear of it being the last one on earth.

La nave spia russa Yantar ha monitorato per mesi i cavi sottomarini
La nave oceanografica russa Yantar, spesso descritta in Occidente come una “nave spia”, ha completato un viaggio di tre mesi lungo le coste europee, durante il quale ha seguito rotte che coincidono con alcune delle principali infrastrutture di comunicazione e approvvigionamento energetico.
L’analisi del Financial Times, basata su immagini satellitari e dati del Sistema di Identificazione Automatica (AIS), indica che l’imbarcazione si è soffermata in aree strategiche come il Mare d’Irlanda e l’arcipelago delle Svalbard, zone in cui transitano cavi sottomarini vitali per la NATO.
Un’unità segreta del Ministero della Difesa russo
Lo Yantar appartiene alla Flotta del Nord ma opera sotto la supervisione della Direzione Generale per la Ricerca in Acque Profonde (GUGI), un’unità del Ministero della Difesa russo creata durante la Guerra Fredda e considerata altamente riservata. Secondo fonti citate dal quotidiano britannico, il GUGI agisce in stretta connessione con l’intelligence militare russa (GRU), piuttosto che con la Marina, che fornisce solo supporto tecnico.
La base principale dell’unità si trova a Olenya Guba, nella regione di Murmansk, lungo la costa del Mare di Barents, sorvegliata da decenni dalla CIA. Le difese del sito sono state recentemente rafforzate con barriere navali e sistemi di disturbo dei segnali GPS, che rendono difficile anche la navigazione civile nelle vicinanze.
La nave è dotata di veicoli sottomarini telecomandati e bracci meccanici in grado di collegarsi ai cavi posati sui fondali marini, consentendo intercettazioni o potenziali operazioni di sabotaggio. Gli esperti ritengono che il suo obiettivo principale sia l’individuazione dei nodi in cui convergono più linee, così da massimizzare l’impatto di un eventuale attacco.
Il Financial Times sottolinea che, dopo l’invasione russa dell’Ucraina nel 2022, la Yantar ha ridotto i viaggi di lunga durata, probabilmente per timore di un’escalation con i paesi occidentali o a causa delle sanzioni. Tuttavia, nel novembre 2024 ha ripreso le missioni estese, completando un percorso di 97 giorni attraverso zone infrastrutturali critiche dell’Atlantico europeo.
Infrastrutture a rischio
Le reti di cavi sottomarini hanno un ruolo centrale nella sicurezza e nell’economia globale. Nel Regno Unito, il 99% delle comunicazioni digitali transita attraverso cavi in fibra ottica sui fondali, mentre i gasdotti sottomarini forniscono circa il 75% dell’approvvigionamento nazionale. Le stesse linee sono cruciali anche per le transazioni finanziarie internazionali e le comunicazioni militari tra Stati Uniti e Regno Unito.
La vulnerabilità di queste infrastrutture è al centro delle preoccupazioni delle marine occidentali. Secondo David Fields, ex addetto navale britannico a Mosca, la strategia russa punta a colpire rapidamente le reti critiche, causando blackout, interruzioni di corrente o blocchi delle comunicazioni, con conseguenze politiche e sociali potenzialmente destabilizzanti.
Il Segretario alla Difesa britannico John Healey ha denunciato pubblicamente la “crescente aggressività russa”, dopo che la Yantar è stata avvistata due volte nelle acque territoriali britanniche nell’ultimo anno. Nel frattempo, Londra ha intensificato i pattugliamenti e avviato lo sviluppo del sistema Atlantic Bastion, progettato per monitorare i fondali marini. L’Irlanda, considerata un punto vulnerabile perché fuori dalla NATO, ha stanziato 60 milioni di euro per un sistema sonar in grado di rilevare minacce subacquee.

Le attività russe hanno attirato attenzione anche in altre aree. In Finlandia, la Procura nazionale ha incriminato il capitano e due membri dell’equipaggio della petroliera Eagle S, accusati di aver danneggiato deliberatamente i cavi elettrici tra Finlandia ed Estonia.
L’imbarcazione, parte della cosiddetta “flotta ombra” russa, è stata inserita nella lista nera dell’India.

Hive0117 è attivo da febbraio 2022 e utilizza il trojan RAT DarkWatchman. Il gruppo maschera le sue campagne come messaggi provenienti da organizzazioni legittime, registra infrastrutture di posta e domini di controllo e talvolta li riutilizza.
Secondo F6, l’attività di DarkWatchman è stata rilevata il 24 settembre, dopo diversi mesi di silenzio.
Gli attacchi sono stati effettuati sotto le mentite spoglie del Federal Bailiff Service dall’indirizzo mail@fssp[.]buzz. Invii simili sono stati osservati a giugno e luglio. L’analisi ha rivelato i domini 4ad74aab[.]cfd e 4ad74aab[.]xyz.
Gli attacchi hanno preso di mira aziende in Russia e Kazakistan. L’elenco dei 51 obiettivi includeva banche, operatori di telecomunicazioni, marketplace, aziende di logistica e produzione, concessionarie di automobili, imprese edili, rivenditori al dettaglio, compagnie assicurative e di investimento, aziende di carburante ed energia, aziende farmaceutiche, istituti di ricerca, un parco tecnologico, un operatore di gestione dei rifiuti solidi urbani, nonché servizi nei settori del turismo, del fitness e dell’IT.
DarkWatchman è stato distribuito anche tramite mailing camuffati da archivio apparentemente del Ministero della Difesa e false citazioni in giudizio.

By the mid-20th century, millions of tons of munitions from both World Wars had been dumped into coastal waters. Now, scientists reveal that these weapons of death have become bustling hubs of life by attracting fish, mollusks, microbes, among other creatures. Footage captured during submersible dives last year shows thriving aquatic communities on war detritus in the Baltic Sea.
“Despite the potential negative effects of the toxic munition compounds, published underwater images show dense populations of algae, hydroids, mussels, and other epifauna on the munition objects, including mines, torpedo heads, bombs, and wooden crates,” said researchers led by Andrey Vedenin of Carl von Ossietzky University. “In this study, for the first time, the composition and structure of epifauna on the surface of marine munitions are described.”

The munitions supported much more life than the surrounding sediment, with an average of around 43,000 organisms per square metre on the munitions compared to about 8,200 organisms on the seafloor. These hotspots were especially interesting given the toxicity levels from the explosive munitions fillings, which often exceeded water quality thresholds for aquatic organisms. (Side note: the authors describe the fillings as “cheesy” due to their texture and yellow color, which made me weirdly hungry for a munitions sandwich).Some species seemed mildly put off by the contamination, including mussels that kept their shells closed at spots with high concentrations. But for the most part, “the high levels of chemical exposure apparently do not prevent the development of a dense epifauna community on the metal shells, fuse pockets, and transport cases centimeters from the explosive filling,” the team found. “The bare explosive, however, remains mostly free from epifauna, even from the Polydora polychaetes that are known to inhabit a vast variety of substrates.”
Wow, you know it’s bad if even Polydora polychaetes won’t touch it. Those worms live on anything but it seems they draw the line at the naked surface of an explosive.
In a separate study, researchers led by Elizabeth White of Duke University used remote-sensing drones to map out 147 shipwrecks in the eerily named “Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay” in Maryland. These WWI-era ships “have created plentiful wetlands, forests, and aquatic habitats,” according to the study.

“Sediment collected within wrecks has created ship-shaped islands, allowing both aquatic and terrestrial vegetation to flourish,” the team said. “Birds, such as Osprey, nest within this vegetation and on exposed areas of ships, while aquatic organisms such as the endangered Atlantic sturgeon use the subaqueous wreckage as foraging and nursery grounds.”And there you have it: research about discarded weapons of death and creepy ship graveyards that, somehow, is kind of uplifting.

The Moon is a harsh mistress, but the harshness is not evenly distributed. To that end, scientists have scouted out the best lunar real estate for future human habitation based on metrics like temperature, topography, solar illumination, dust activity, water resources, and radiation.
“Lunar resources can provide essential support for establishing permanent lunar habitats, suggesting that the Moon may become humanity’s second home,” said researchers led by Siyan Wang of Tongji University. However, the team added that the Moon does come with some design challenges: for example, “lacking an atmosphere, lunar surface temperatures range annually from –171°C to 111°C.”
Setting aside the absence of standard atmospheric amenities, the new study spotlights three promising sites, all of which are mare plains (low-lying basaltic regions) sheltered within the craters Pytheas, Gambart, and Parry. Great locations, but you’re not going to like the commute.

Should aliens have inalienable rights? This question has been debated for years (and I explore it in my new book🔌). In a new study, scientists propose establishing a legal framework for aliens quickly, given the frenzied pace of both astrobiology and commercial space development.
“Humanity stands at the threshold of an unprecedented boom in space activity, with planned mining ventures, increased uncrewed and crewed missions, and escalating commercial interest,” said researchers led by Emma Johanna Puranen of the Open University. “This coincides with a ‘golden age’ of astrobiology, where scientists increasingly favour the likelihood of life elsewhere in the universe. We must act now to establish legal and ethical norms for the treatment of extraterrestrial ecosystems before irreversible harm occurs.”
The team models its proposed framework on the influential 1972 treatise “Should Trees Have Standing?” by Christopher Stone. Who knows if we’ll ever actually need a legal system for aliens, but at the very least I hope it inspires a procedural spinoff called CSI: E.T.

Scientists have discovered fossils of a megaraptor (a dinosaur as cool as it sounds) with the leg bone of a crocodilian right there in its jaws. Though it’s possible that this bone coincidentally slid into the predator’s mouth after it died, we may be looking at a 68-million-year-old version of The Last Supper.

“Here we report a previously unknown megaraptoran genus and species” called Joaquinraptor, which was found in central Patagonia and “is among the most completely represented and latest-surviving megaraptorans,” said researchers led by Lucio Ibiricu of the Patagonian Institute of Geology and Paleontology.“A crocodyliform right humerus…was situated between the closely associated left and right dentaries of the Joaquinraptor holotype, with the apices of several tooth crowns of the megaraptorid in direct contact with the humeral shaft, which also shows potential tooth marks,” the team added. “As such, this discovery may constitute direct evidence regarding prey selection” of megaraptors.
Death is a bummer, but I bet it goes down a lot smoother with a mouthful of croc hot wings.
Dialect Analysis (Taylor’s Version)
I knew this study was trouble when it walked in. Researchers tracked Taylor Swift’s dialect shifts across the eras by logging and analyzing more than 1,400 vowel sounds in interviews and performances spanning her career.
“The results of this study show that Taylor Swift temporarily adopted distinct measurable features of Southern American dialect during her time in Nashville…and these features disappeared upon her relocation to Philadelphia and New York City,” said authors Miski Mohamed and Matthew B. Winn of the University of Minnesota.

The team also discovered that Swift lowered her voice pitch during her NYC years, when she became more outspoken about “The Man” (sexism and creative property rights). They speculate that she may have “intentionally modulated her voice pitch to be lower to signal the seriousness of these themes, and to convey her competence to speak on them with authority.”Or, they add, it could be a natural voice drop “associated with aging through her 20s,” an explanation supported by her own admission that she has this thing where she gets older but just never wiser. Whatever her current accent, let’s hope she shakes it off and leaves a blank space open for new dialects. Look what you made me do; it’s me, hi, I’m the Abstract, it’s me.

Americans rallied for Kimmel. It’s time to do the same for Mario Guevara
When ABC suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last week following a shakedown from the Trump administration, celebrities, free speech advocates, and ordinary Americans voiced their outrage. They were right to sound the alarm — and it (mostly) worked. Kimmel’s back on the air.
But where is that same outrage against the government’s effort to deport Mario Guevara, an Atlanta-area journalist with a work visa who has lawfully resided in the U.S. for 20-plus years? His only “offense” is informing the public of protests against the government.
This week, a final removal order was issued against Guevara, who was arrested (with the baseless criminal charges since dropped) while livestreaming a July “No Kings” protest in Georgia. He might not have a late-night comedy show, but his right to report news is every bit as important as Kimmel’s right to tell jokes.
The stakes in Guevara’s case — both for him and for the country — are even higher than in the Kimmel fiasco that has dominated headlines. Guevara could be deported at any moment, likely to his birthplace, El Salvador, which he fled decades ago to escape political persecution.
Despite the extremely serious constitutional implications of Kimmel’s case, his worst-case scenario was moving from prime time to a podcast. There is no telling what fate might await Guevara if he’s thrown out of the country.
And if that happens, the chilling effect on journalists — particularly noncitizen ones, even those like Guevara with legal status — will be impossible to measure. After all, we only know what news we hear. We don’t know what news we don’t hear because journalists didn’t report it out of fear for their safety or freedom.
Kimmel‘s worst-case scenario was moving from prime time to a podcast. There is no telling what fate might await Guevara.
Kimmel’s professional peers — famous comedians and other celebrities — might feel relieved that Kimmel ultimately got his show back. But most journalists (or comedians, for that matter) aren’t famous and don’t have a Rolodex of Hollywood A-listers ready to come to their defense. Kimmel’s win offers them little comfort.
Independent journalists like Guevara also don’t have money for lawyers, lobbyists, or PR firms to make their case to judges, politicians, or the public (although fortunately, organizations like the ACLU, Free Press, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and others have stepped up).
Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr tried to manufacture plausible deniability in Kimmel’s case, arguing that it wasn’t his public ultimatum but pressure from local audiences that led ABC and its affiliates to pull Kimmel. That’s nonsense, but in Guevara’s case — much like the case against Rümeysa Öztürk, the Tufts University student facing removal for co-writing an op-ed critical of Israel — the government is hardly attempting to hide its agenda.
The federal government seeks to deport Guevara — despite his work visa and despite local prosecutors dropping their case against him for livestreaming in public — because, to them, his reporting makes him an “undesirable.” How did journalism, the only career protected by the Constitution, become a disfavored profession in America?
Guevara’s reporting often focused on immigration enforcement abuses. That earns him no friends in a government that considers U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to be secret police. From seeking to punish social media users who identify ICE agents to investigating radio stations that report on ICE raids to threatening whistleblowers who undermine the official narrative, the administration has made every effort to intimidate those who speak the truth about its immigration policy.
The secrecy is by no means limited to ICE — while Kimmel’s show was in limbo and Guevara wrote letters from his cramped jail cell, the Pentagon announced it would force reporters to pledge to only report authorized information.
What this administration cannot seem to comprehend is that the First Amendment exists for the sole purpose of protecting the right to publish information the government does not want published. There would be no need for a constitutional right to publish what the government wants. Everyone loves free speech when the speaker is on their side.
Guevara is exactly who the constitution was intended to protect — and his retaliatory deportation is exactly the kind of authoritarian censorship it was intended to prevent.
Kimmel will be all right with or without ABC, and with or without you. That doesn’t mean not to protest efforts to censor him — the FCC’s antics are unconstitutional, un-American, and fully deserving of contempt. Carr should be fired and disbarred, and the corporations that caved to him should be ashamed.
But free speech is not only for celebrities. The real battles for our rights are not fought in television studios and theme parks but at protests and in citizen journalists’ home newsrooms. And these days, in detention centers and immigration courts.

Journalist facing deportation deserves same energy as Kimmel

How noncitizen journalists can prepare for ICE
The immediate priority is getting Guevara’s case dropped, but we also don’t want there to be any more baseless deportation cases against journalists. Many newsrooms — not to mention freelancers — have little experience dealing with immigration authorities, though. Luckily, we know people who do.

Pentagon seeks to control the press
The Pentagon faced bipartisan backlash for its ridiculous policy requiring journalists to agree not to obtain or report “unauthorized” information. We called them out in The New York Times, CNN, The Intercept, and elsewhere. Stern also discussed the disturbing move on NPR’s Los Angeles affiliate, KCRW, and FPF’s Lauren Harper discussed this and other threats to press freedom on NPR’s 1A.
First, President Donald Trump tried to downplay the policy. Now, in a letter responding to an inquiry from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, officials are trying to walk it back. Unfortunately, the response offers little reassurance that the Pentagon’s intentions are anything but censorial, and doubles down on restricting routine constitutionally protected newsgathering. Drop charges against Cincinnati journalists
Jury trials of journalists arrested while reporting news are exceedingly rare in the United States, but the next two are coming next week unless prosecutors come to their senses.
Journalists Madeline Fening and Lucas Griffith, both of whom were arrested while covering a protest on July 17 for Cincinnati-based CityBeat, are set to be tried Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, respectively. In an unfortunate irony, the protest was in opposition to the recently dropped immigration case against Ayman Soliman, who himself fled Egypt to escape persecution for his journalism. We led a letter to prosecutors from rights organizations and local journalism professors urging them to drop the baseless charges. Read more here.
Proposed ‘safety’ bill would undermine accountability for lawmakers
FPF’s Caitlin Vogus writes for The Minnesota Star Tribune that a bill sponsored by Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Ted Cruz to protect lawmakers won’t fully stop data brokers from trafficking their personal information but will stop journalists and watchdogs from holding them accountable.

Police records must stay public in California
A searchable public database known as the Police Records Access Project has made public for the first time more than 1.5 million pages of previously secret records about the use of force and misconduct by California police officers.
The California legislature, however, is trying to put police misconduct back under wraps. This month, it passed AB 1178, a new bill that would make it harder for the public to access these records. The bill is awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature or veto. Read more here.
