You know why we Germans are so pedantic about data protection? Someone around 90 years ago went through all records available, selected people with certain criteria, with the help of IBM, and then killed them all.
We don't want to be on any list.
And now the US Gov and Musk is trying to get access to all data they have about every person and put them into a big fat DB and run AI over it.
I am afraid what they will do with that.

Mutual aid. Organizing. Sharing, contextualizing, and making meaning of news and health information to counter propaganda and information overload. The use cases for alternative social networks – not controlled by techbro white supremacist CEO's working with their cronies in authoritarian governments – practically write themselves in today's world. And with so many talented social scientists, designers, systems thinkers, and developers directly impacted by DOGE, MAGA, et al, there are a lot of people with the right skills for these new networks to make rapid progress.
The good news is there's a lot of promising work happening in the decentralized social media ecosystems known as the fediverses ("federated universes") and the ATmosphere (a fediverse built on Bluesky's AT protocol), including DAIR-tube, Blacksky, the #FreeFediverse, and more.
Still, as promising as these efforts are, there's still a long ways to go.

Just to offer this up, suggestion that the fedi's failure to meet this moment with viable facilities for Groups organizing could turn out to be one of the worst in its history. In retrospect, the emphasis on building "more twitters", replicating surveillance-capitalist functionality, and dreaming of world-conquering universal networks has turned out to be badly short-sighted. The footnote in the "Notes" post that mentions the Mastodon project *receiving a grant* to implement Groups years ago, then not bothering to use it, is galling.
It's easy to be a back-seat driver; but it can't be overstated how important it is for developers to perceive the fedi as a field of opportunities for imaginative killer apps the capitalists can't or won't provide, rather than just a fallback for fleeing refugees with replicated functionality
@ophiocephalic yeah totally agree. And not just for organizing either - I was taking with somebody earlier today shot how their friends with long covid are tethered to Facebook because that’s where there support groups are.
I do think some devs get it - Bonfire for example, NodeBB, Mike with Forte. So there are still possibilities. alas that’s not where the resources are going … but maybe a chance to change that?

il codice di mastodon è libero, non ha padroni, il fediverso non ha padroni, non è sotto il controllo di qualcuno che può sbatterti fuori, gli account non sono di un padrone, puoi trasferirli e migrare ovunque.
Si ci sono i fornitori di servizi che hanno istanze ma su mastodon sono l'equivalente delle compagnie telefoniche, usi quelle che vuoi, e ti sposti dove vuoi, non c'è un padrone.
C'è differenza fra monetizzare con pubblicità e fare raccolta fondi per l'hosting.
Beh, di tutti i servizi del fediverso, Mastodon è uno dei più centralizzanti a causa del costo delle risorse (e delle competenze tecniche) necessarie ad eseguirlo su un server. A sua volta le grandi istanze non sono esenti da problemi, sia di privacy, che di convivenza.

si tecnicamente l'hosting è un problema, in quanto sono loro i veri proprietari di tutta l'infrastruttura, a differenza di Facebook che possiede i propri server.
Quindi un hosting può chiuderti l'istanza in qualsiasi momento per violazione delle regole o per un seguestro giudiziario o anche perchè banalmente stai ritardando un pagamento.
Quindi si, se non si ha un server in salotto si è dipendenti da terzi ma puoi estrarre i backup e muoverti quando vuoi se vuoi essere sicuro

"Alla ricerca dell'ermellino sperduto" è il prodotto finale di un progetto interdisciplinare di storytelling e illustrazione realizzato nella mia scuola durante l'a.s. 2021-2022.
La prima parte del progetto, gestita dai docenti di Lettere, consisteva nella scrittura di un racconto ispirato al nome dell'Istituto (la partecipazione era organizzata sotto forma di concorso e alla fine una giuria interna ha scelto il racconto vincitore).
Nella seconda parte, con i colleghi di Arte e immagine, gli alunni hanno illustrato il racconto e definito la sceneggiatura del video, che è poi stato realizzato professionalmente.

@wonkothesane I'll be real with you: this platform needs both better tools for those with large accounts and it needs a culture which isn't quite so trigger-happy to push popular accounts off the platform.
There are frictions here which are very hard to understand for the majority of its users.

Watched this video through #invidious because #YouTube managed to cripple #FreeTube ( a Free / #libre youtube app which does not have recommendation algorithm ) but the only live invidious instance was able to circumvent the issue and now it sort of works.

I don't have optics on any aggressive actions towards you, but I'm also not looking THAT hard. In what ways are people trying to push you off?
My problem with YouTube's subscriptions page is that it appears to have no control over marking whether you are done with something or want to leave it in the list for later (if it's something you need to be in the mood for).
RSS readers can do this easily, and I use that to 'triage' my lists all the time. YouTube's way of displaying whether things have new content seems really arbitrary and unhelpful.
But that's probably in the bit you cut for time.
With a one minute timer (and no specialized knowledge), I managed to get as far as the model 15, knew I was in the right ballpark because it had the same footprint but a different faceplate, but I unpaused the video to check if you were going to provide the answer to the "quiz" before allotting any more time to that rabbit hole (which you did).
And after listening to that preface, I had a feeling that you were going to express an opinion that I agreed with (which is one of the reasons I'm on this platform).

I cannot count how many people have gotten upset at me for saying I don't have an opinion on something.
If I don't possess enough knowledge about something to have an *informed* opinion on something, I don't have an opinion on it at all. So many people in this "New World" have difficulty understanding that.

A colleague was arguing that "the algorithm" might help break echo chambers. I don't think that's the case. This for-profit algorithm optimising for the user engagement at all costs is visibly amplifying the said echo chambers to be able to suck benefits from it. And it shows...

Thank you for making this video and talking about this stuff. Even as someone with a computer science education who knows how these things work, and how they can subtly guide you towards certain kinds of content, it is remarkably easy to get pulled into using algorithmic feeds.
For me personally, my subscriptions feed on YouTube has gotten cluttered with videos from those I used to watch eagerly, but no longer do.
I am watching and nodding along, being crotchety and yelling at the clouds.

Saw this on the Fedi, immediately watched it. My own method for dealing with the problem(s) you mention is: I don't subscribe, I download. It took a bit of scripting, but I have a self-curated list of UTOOBers whom I find interesting, and my script finds new posts and downloads them. In the evenings, I catch up by watching some.
I boosted and reposted the link, and have seen my (small) group of friends repost it as well.

I stopped using the subscription page some time back in 2015 when they added algorithm stuff to it and you couldn't guarantee that every video would actually show up in chronological order (I remember people complaining that they had to "subscribe to their subscriptions" with the bell icon).
Ever since I've just checked the page of each channel manually.

At times I feel pressured to engage in algorithmic complacency since its supposedly more convenient!
You know, yesterday I mentioned that I've been writing some webpages to get my head wrapped around computers. And in response (without reading it) I was asked if I used AI.
I brushed it off out of habit. But seriously: When the whole point is to think through it myself, why would I automate that?
You are right and you should say it. This video was a huge wake-up call for me. I had not even noticed myself falling down that rabbit hole with its very slippery sides until you pointed it out. Thank you for the most important piece of content for my mental wellbeing since CGP Grey's "7 Ways to Maximize Misery".
One small note I have, though, is that human connection is, by its very nature, random. It's not like people choose who their neighbors are, or who they run into at a community event. You're absolutely right that letting an algorithm which is definitely controlled by people with an agenda decide who we get introduced to is harmful in the long run, but I'd argue a platform that connects people to each other more or less randomly ("making human connection more random") is just emulating attending a mixer but on a computer screen.

To add to your data - I don't have a YT account so I subscribe to your RSS feed, that's primarily where I click on videos. No clue how that's counted, or if there are any engineers left at YouTube that remember the RSS feeds are still silently churning away in the background.
On your news comment: In the past decade I've noticed more clickbait-like editing from places like the BBC, which is shocking considering the primary audience is not served ads, and therefore there is no reason to, you know, maximise clicks. Common offenses are posing answerable questions in titles, nowhere near as bad as the issues you cite, but still...
On the last point about the potential upsides of "AI", even when people understand there's more ML than chatbots, I think people overestimate how much this is going to help. Even with an ML churning out new proteins and analysing medical scans faster, you still need human doctors / nurses delivering "last mile" medical care, and that's where I think the major bottlenecks are.

I know YouTube subscriptions and RSS feeds are not the most common way the platform is used but I am actually a bit astonished at how little used they actually are!

Today I noticed that @TechConnectify has an account here in addition to #BlueSky and I was just about to ask how the two platforms compared for that sort of usage. And then I saw that my question had already been answered 🙂
I think this is a very useful bit of feedback for #fediverse / #mastodon from exactly the sort of content creator that a lot of you want to see coming to this platform.
I would only add one other thought, I'm suspecting the character count limits between interfaces to the two platforms might also be significant to TC.
Otherwise I had been wondering about whether it's better to have accounts on both platforms or just to use those gateway services between the two.
(Also, I don't know, maybe I should be doing a quote post with this, because it does seem to break the stream of conversation, but I don't know)

Especially the part about how algorithms influence what media outlets publish. I used to really like the NYT. Not so much anymore. The fact that the the Facebook algorithm is the editor in chief of the NYT is really bums me out.

It honestly feels like I'm taking crazy pills when talking to people about how much they're enjoying "not choosing".
The one part I _somewhat_ agree with them is that life can be so exhausting some times, to the point we don't want to have to expend mental energy to "Choose" and just want to consume. IMO it's a valid thought, but should only be done in moderation!
hmm I'd like to pick your brains a bit about this video if it's OK. I'm not driving at a point, just trying to expose ideas here.
You talk about Algorithms in the SaaS sense, but don't really talk about them in the regular computing sense. ie: Basically every computer in your home is not just running software in a benign way, but running algorithms by Silicon Valley. That is to say: You don't control what those computers do, even though you "own" them.
(EDIT: Here I mean your TV, your router, your PC, your phone, etc)
I could use Windows as an example here, and Microsoft as far back as Windows 8 has been trying to turn Windows into more of a lean-back experience, not to mention its attempts at force-feeding its users AI now. When you search the start menu, it will often show software which isn't installed, or other forms of advertising or "news" which it approves of. So does this logic not extend in all the way?
ie: Aren't you arguing at a minimum for the sorts of regulation which @pluralistic has been arguing for, and at a maximum for always running FLOSS software?
I'm not saying you are actually arguing that. Rather I'm asking whether someone, in some field, would just not care that much about some aspect of their digital diet. A farm worker or an accountant, a Yoga instructor or a lawyer. They may not even have a computer in their home other than a mobile phone, and they maybe don't see it as anything but a pastime. Do you expect them to put in the same sort of work, or have the same sort of understanding about the technical world?
In some ways, do they not depend on us as technologists to fight for better technology? How do you see us solving this problem while still being a niche group?

Your video made me think of essays from the broadcast-only TV eta. Writers going off about people who would just leave it on all day, never changing the channel, doing the same kind of delegation.
Those writers weren't really wrong, either. I mean, that's the Fox News model...
...which begs the question whether the political forces which made Fox also recognise the advantages of algorithmic enticement keeping attention laser-focused.

Apologies for the long response. I'll try to be worthwhile.
In grad school for computer science, nigh on twenty years ago, I took a multisemester series in UX design taught by Juan-Pablo Hourcade. It was fascinating, eye-opening, and frightening. One of the things Prof. Hourcade suggested we consider was the difference between user interfaces which exist to support independent exploration of a new frontier of capabilities, or to guide users down well-trod, well-curated paths towards destinations anticipated by the UX designer.
Or put in modern terms, the difference between a word processor with which you can write anything in any genre or even invent entirely new ones, or an LLM which can imitate any of hundreds of poets but can't actually create any new style, only regurgitate pastiches of existing ones.
Another lesson from Prof. Hourcade: UX design is not accidental, it is intentional. The designer, if they have any professionalism at all, constructs an interface to facilitate … well, what, exactly? The end-user has a terrible time learning who the designer even is, much less their underlying philosophy on how humans ought interact with technology. Out of this, he recommended that we, as newly-minted UX experts (we'd taken two classes in it, which put us significantly ahead of the standards of the field in that era), practice ruthless skepticism in evaluating UX: our needs and interests may not align with that of the designer, and it was altogether too easy to simply uncritically and unconsciously abandon our needs and interests in order to "better align our workflow with the software".
What you discuss in your video seems to be an Hourcadian criticism adapted to the modern world. This isn't to diminish the insight or creativity you've shown, far from it. I say it only so that, if on reflection you agree, you can see yourself as joining an existing line of UX criticism and extending it in a useful direction.
I wish this world was other than what it is increasingly becoming.

Cheesy as they were, there doesn't seem to be anything available to my tween that mirrors the "computer and internet skills" education I got in the 90s/00s.
fellow grumpy old(ish) man here, I have RSI from shaking my fist at the clouds... it blows my mind that people don't use subscriptions! Then again I'm the sort of person who used RSS in the pre-social-media world (TBH Google killing Reader kind of killed that for me alongside the reality that many bloggers I used to follow stopped blogging in favour of social media.)
News: I have specific sites I go to and don't use any of the "aggregated"/algorithmic feeds. I try and ignore the "news" section on, for example, YouTube. It's always stuff I just don't want to see, in fact I think I have trauma from seeing Trump and Musk every time I look at the screen. I wish I could just turn that off.
A similar issue to shorts that you mention, I'm not interested, it isn't the sort of content I'm there for. (I do use a browser plugin to do some of this, but I also use YT on FireTV a lot which doesn't have such niceties... yes, I need to cut FireTV out of the equation at some point.)
I’m on a small Fedi instance and take photos on a mirrorless camera (with low vision, as my username suggests). I’m 100% with you on intentionality and thoughtfulness, and putting in the effort. Also with you on taking responsibility for our research and work.
At the same time, I’m also with you on looking for nuance. The same thoughtfulness can solve some of the issues you bring up: follower-only posts are really useful; Google Maps has a no toll roads option; you pointed out the option of the subscription feed on YouTube, but having the option of recommendations is what lets people - ahem - discovery - hehe - your channel.
I have a much harder time coming up with excuses for LLM hype, but I know some people do do the extra work to find sources, like how we were told not to trust Wikipedia and check sources - some people did the work them, some didn’t.
Ultimately, thank you for the video, really great points. I wonder if it would have made more sense to me if some aspects were separated out or if I’m latching on to details.
Oh! I would have used text recognition and/or reverse image search to start researching the radio. Yup, still mostly blind. Hehe.

I think the concept of Algorithmic Complacency is such an important thing to get into people's heads and also maybe just complacency in general.
I've been long off Twitter/X ever since "Twitter Blue" rolled in, but since then I've discovered what it's meant to be on social media in a way thats actually healthy and, y'know, social again (spoiler, not algorithms).
It's been good to have peace of mind that nothing is controlling what I can and cant see. I feel like that much is obviously but it's baffling to me that some people, even people I call friends, cant look inward to see how detrimental it is to their minds. I think algorithms are designed to make people think they need them, to not use their brain and just intake a continuous stream of consciousness, to give the illusion of social connection.
I think places like Bluesky and Mastodon do it better, but Cohost did it the best: You choose who you want to follow, you can talk about what you want to talk about without (as many) random people or bots completely spoiling the mood (either from being misinformed or just trying to intentionally be a nuisance). It feels like a genuine community where people can share and learn and laugh, and I think thats something an algorithm completely snuffs out. It's a completely different game.
I've argued this more than I want to admit, but there are a lot or reasons people say they "need" the algorithm and it kinda hurts, because I know I thought that once too. From "I need it so my art has reach" to "its the only way i get news" (this one is terrifying and I dont think I need to explain why).
I think a better Internet is out there. Admittedly I think we solved this a long time ago and tech companies just made it worse and found a way to make money off of it, but I think if more people are aware of the issues at hand and look inward, we can create a better future.
More and more people are switching to platforms with fewer/without algorithms. More and more people are self-hosting their art and thoughts and wikis (maybe this is just my corner of the internet actually, but I'd like to think it is). That future may still just be as niche as bsky and cohost and the fediverse, but I'd like to see a future where more people discover that and think for themself.

Sir, I am one of the poxy 3% that *does* use, and absolutely loves the subscription feed. I look at home once in a blue moon and find it honestly depressing.
You also suggested that if a creator posts multiple videos at a time that they end up in a single tile, that does seem to happen at least here on my phone.
If I'm subscribed and have notifications on for a particular creator and they post three or more videos, they get lumped under a collapsed entity that I have to expand to view.
If it's only two, then they don't, I think... Don't quote me on that though.
Edit: BBC News posted two videos and they appear as a single item, have included a screenshot (hopefully) so people can see. I'm blind so I could well have screwed it up, admittedly.

You put together a very thoughtful video. The acknowledgement that subject a subject has nuance and the understanding that the video is an opinion piece is always important, especially when you are focusing on content that does not follow those two things.
It’s spurred me to add a browser extension that automatically redirects to the subscriptions page. A bandaid fix, but one that reminds me to not get sucked into complacency so easily.

The internet has become TV by a difference name for a growing demographic.
Less that people forgot that the internet is the world's largest library but after a 12 hour shift earning minimum wage, people want TV not library research.
You're not a crank. This is valid and accurate.
It's stupid to put so much reliance on what an unthinking unfeeling algorithm or AI says without any care into the validity of what it says.
But it's really hard not to fall into the slop pit of convenience and let it serve your gruel. I've got a ways to go to fix myself as well.
I'm going to change my yt bookmark to the subscriptions feed so that's the one I see first- I just wish I could hide shorts on my mobile like I have on desktop. I also need to find a better more effortful way of getting news than just browsing google news. Some of the shit it puts up is so fucking stupid.
I might also take stock and hide the worst offending apps on my phone.

Missing one bit: it's not just the algos choose which content you see, it's also they enable people to make DIFFERENT content ONLY for you, custom made to influence you, that others can't see.
So Cambridge Analytica can show you “Candidate supports X” while showing “Candidate opposes X” to others. No one sees all the messages, and no one can call out lies and contradictions.

As a polite critique, I must say that you spend some much time on googling the radio, that on the first try I didn't get to the meat. Only after few recommendations by people here on the 'don did I try checking the last third, and found it most excellent.

Really enjoyed this video. I think it sums up what I've grown to feel about the modern internet.
It's worth noting that, even predating the rise of AI, a lot of searching has become less effective as SEO-optimized generic articles or sponsored crap from big sites makes it very hard to, for example, research products to compare which you should buy. Obviously specific queries about purely informative resources are more likely to be useful.
The old school forum and sites like reddit provide similar results as far as niche information and especially users that have experience with the thing you want to know. The difference is that unless you're passionate about something, you're not likely to start posting on a niche forum, where you might if you're subscribed to a community and it's part of your feed.
That's where I think the value of "platforms" is. For better or worse, they're easier to use and get into.
Re:reddit, there's always Lemmy, which is definitely getting better but has some rough edges.

I was intrigued that, instead of Technology Connections, the handle here was / is "techconnectify"
Late on seeing this, ironically because I stepped back on to YouTube with a TV and the algorithm recommended it.
However, I enjoyed the video a lot. I find myself giving into algorithmic complacency but have done things to mitigate it. For YouTube on browsers the extension Unhook removed the home page algorithm. I rely on Subscriptions and never felt I was missing out. Mastodon and Pixelfed help. Also simply messaging friends on text or Signal.
