When a user shares a scientific paper link on bonfire, the app automatically fetches the #DOI metadata to display an interactive preview. This means instant access to key details like authors, journal, publication date and abstract. Please, definitely have a look at #Citoid. It's a node.js service developed as an extension for @mediawiki and used by @wikipedia and other Wikis. Very clever approach: Given a PID (DOI, but can also be an ISBN etc, or any URL) it pulls metadata utilizing the broad collection of @zotero's powerful site translators. BTW, Bonfire sounds like a super interesting approach, happy to see academic initiatives like yours making use of the Fediverse!
@Lambo Huge thanks for the suggestion! We’ve now implemented that as well and being able to paste non-DOI ids or URLs and getting the same article preview indeed greatly improves the usability.
Bonfire looks interesting. Why don't you offer a web based solution (instead of me having to install apps)? I imagine it is a intentional decision but I my search on your website didn't find a reason. I also couldn't find a web based way to participate, if I missed that what is the url with details on that?

Visibility and discoverability have been much discussed topics recently, especially when Mastodon announced the introduction of a full-text search. Protecting users from abusive searches is a major concern. In the case where one instance follows another, this results in a different complexity of the problem, especially if there are two software applications that specialize in events but have a completely different approach to them, like Gancio, Mobilizon or a local community site run with WordPress.
We would like to find a common denominator for this problem and have therefore opened a topic on Socialhub. We look forward to everyone contributing to the discussion or just leaving some thoughts in the replies.

Dopo le lezioni alla scuola media, ho chiamato il mio migliore amico, Bruce Jordan e gli ho chiesto: “Posso venire a giocare adesso?” Bruce ha risposto: “Certo.” Sono saltato sulla mia bicicletta Schwinn, rossa e senza cambio e ho pedalato come un matto per tre chilometri fino alla casa di Bruce. Sono arrivato senza fiato, ma felice.
Era divertente giocare con Bruce, perché lui stava sempre inventando nuovi giochi da giocare sia all'interno che all'esterno. Non c'è mai stato un momento di noia a casa di Bruce. Bruce mi ha spiegato con disinvoltura: “Le persone che hanno inventato questo gioco non sono più intelligente di me e di te, anche se sono adulti. Siamo in grado di creare per questo gioco regole migliori delle loro. Regole molto migliori”.
Ero ancora un po' scettico, fino a quando Bruce ha detto: “Senti, se questo gioco nei primi cinque minuti non è molto più divertente, torneremo a giocare il gioco con le regole della scatola.” Che mi sembrava un modo intelligente di procedere.
E in effetti, le regole di Bruce per Scarabeo hanno reso il gioco molto più divertente da giocare. A metà, non ho potuto fare a meno di chiedergli: “Se le regole per Scarabeo possono essere migliorate, si possono migliorare anche le regole degli altri giochi?”
Bruce ha risposto: “Le regole di tutti i giochi possono essere migliorate. Non solo, tutto ciò che vedi nel mondo intorno a te, progettato dalla mente umana, tutto può essere migliorato. Tutto si può migliorare.”
Ascoltando queste parole, un fulmine mi ha attraversato la mente. In pochi secondi, la mia mente è diventata open source. In quel momento preciso ho saputo qual era lo scopo della mia vita e il mio destino: cercare intorno a me le cose che potevano essere migliorate, e quindi migliorarle.
Quando quella sera sono montato sulla mia bicicletta Schwinn per tornare a casa, la mia mente era intossicata da idee e possibilità. Avevo imparato più da Bruce Jordan in quel giorno di quanto avessi imparato in un intero anno di scuola. Venticinque anni prima che la frase “open source” venisse coniata, Bruce Jordan aveva reso open source la mia mente. Gli sarò sempre grato per questo.
Tornando a casa quella sera, ho deciso che nella mia vita avrei rivolto le mie energie ad ampliare le opportunità di apprendimento al di fuori della scuola, perché a volte l'apprendimento e le realizzazioni più significative avvengono al di fuori delle mura scolastiche. Oggi lavoro in una biblioteca pubblica nella zona di Washington DC e ogni giorno parlo con gli studenti delle scuole elementari e medie che si fermano per dire ciao. Ogni tanto incontro studenti la cui mente è ricettiva alle grandi idee. Quando succede, pianto dei piccoli semi nelle loro menti e li mando per la loro strada. Spetta a loro coltivare quei semi. Il mio ruolo è quello di piantare dei semi di idee nelle loro menti. Il loro ruolo è quello di osservare quei semi germogliare e scegliere se annaffiarli o no.
Ho imparato un'altra lezione importante da Bruce Jordan. Nello stesso anno, mi ha chiesto se volevo giocare a frisbee baseball. “Che cos'è il frisbee baseball?” ho chiesto incuriosito. Bruce mi ha risposto: “Non lo so, ma sembra un gran bel gioco. Creeremo le regole mentre andiamo verso il campo da baseball.”
In effetti, Bruce ha inventato le regole per il frisbee baseball mentre camminavamo lungo l'isolato che ci separava dal campo da baseball. E abbiamo giocato la partita con grande gioia fino a quando si riusciva a malapena a vedere il frisbee nel cielo serale. Quello che ho imparato da Bruce quel giorno è di non avere paura di andare avanti quando il tuo istinto ti dice che troverai delle cose buone che ti aspettano. Bruce era assolutamente sicuro che ci saremmo divertiti moltissimo a giocare a frisbee baseball. Ed è stato proprio così.
L'open source è un movimento per il software, ma è anche molto di più di questo. E’ un modo ottimista di guardare ad ogni oggetto e idea costruiti dall'uomo. Tutto può essere migliorato da cima a fondo. Tutto quello che serve è un po’ di creatività e la volontà di applicare la nostra mente al compito.
Vogliamo provarci? Le regole originali di ogni gioco sono stampate sulla scatola, ma queste regole sono solo dei suggerimenti. Sono migliorabili e devono essere migliorate per quanto possibile.

Using the WordPress ActivityPub plugin – what can go wrong?
First of all: this post is not directly related to events, but to the usability of the current ActivityPub implementations in WordPress.
Summary(tl;dr): Yesterday @linos spontaneously gave a good friend personal assistance in setting up ActivityPub on his WordPress site. The following article is a memory log of it. Obviously, it is only a single sample, but what happened is consistent with many of our assumptions. In short, the ActivityPub plugin and Fediverse are great, but there is still a lot of room to improve the user experience, especially for non-technical people, and there could be a lot of small features that could have a big impact in the end that nobody has thought of yet. In addition, the currently missing tombstones and account migration features may be critical for many to be satisfied with the plugin.
How this small private workshop came about
A few days ago I met an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while at a jam session and we got to talking about what’s going on in our lives. Of course, I was excited to talk about my event federation project for WordPress and my friend listened attentively. He had never heard of the Fediverse or Mastodon, he is a freelance artist with a background in architecture, specializing in design, sculpture and jewelry art. In the end he said: “I don’t do events, but I also have a WordPress site where I post my work in a sort of portfolio, so I could use that, couldn’t I? I said “for sure”. I agreed to give him a little help and we scheduled a meeting to set up ActivityPub and get things going. In return, he promised to be willing to overcome pitfalls and showed a willingness to learn about the Fediverse. And so our six hour trip started.
Background
For me, it was a great chance to have a familiar environment to encounter problems that might arise in our evaluation workshop, so I tried to follow as many general guidelines for conducting usability studies as possible, such as not having a direct view of the tester’s computer screen and not daring to touch the machine. I started asking questions about how he got his website. Like many non-technical people, he does not host the site himself, but a close friend of his helped him a few years ago, with the initial design done by an agency that set things up. They chose a hosting provider that offered managed WordPress hosting, but as we found out, they didn’t really use those features, which typically include automatic updates of the core and plugins, and backups including automatic rollbacks in case of failures. Since the last time he asked his friend to fix something was more than a year ago, his site was quite outdated. 20 plugins were asking for updates and the core was on WordPress 6.1. But the dependencies of the ActivityPub plugin were met, so we decided to go ahead and deal with the maintenance procedure later.
First steps
“Can you now install and activate the plugin called ActivityPub”. This was easy. Then the first hurdle appeared. “What now?” “Can I see my profile?” I felt like a setup wizard should have guided him through this. I told him to look at the ActivityPub plugin settings page to get an overview. Since the plugin overview was still open, he clicked the shortcut there, but later had trouble finding the settings page again (it is a submenu in the settings menu).
The main settings page of the plugin has two tabs: Welcome and Settings (and Followers may also appear if the blog profile is enabled). The Settings tab itself didn’t get his attention until I gave him some hints on where to look. But even on the welcome page, he realized that something might not be what he wanted: 13 years ago, when he set up the site, his friend randomly chose a username for him, so the default (and already active!) fediverse handle was <ugly-username>@<lastname>.site. “Hmm, maybe I should change the username.” It took him a while to figure out that the WordPress core does not allow usernames to be changed. “But isn’t there a way?”. “I think there are plugins to do that”, I replied. He understood the underlying meaning in my tone and asked: “Is there a risk of things breaking anything?” and could not guarantee that. Then he asked if he could just create a new user in WordPress and change the author to the new one: “does that have any drawbacks?”.
At this point, I was no longer sure if I was missing something and might give the wrong answer. My guess was that the only thing that might bother him would be the information in the Fediverse profile about how long the user has been there. It would not be “I have been here for 13 years” but “I registered today”. Then I told him there might be another solution and asked him to go back to the settings page (which he was having trouble finding). He quickly understood that the blog profile could solve his problems because it allowed him to choose any user handle he wanted. “But do I need the author profile now? The text didn’t give him a clear answer, so I explained what the results of both configurations would be: Blog-enabled, Author-enabled -> Author creates, Blog boostsBlog-enabled, Author-disabled -> Blog creates, Author is not visible to the outside world
Learn by example what the Fediverse is
Since we started the process, he has been concerned about how his posts would look. I tried to postpone the answer as long as possible and let him read the corresponding part of the ActivityPub plugins settings page. He got even more confused, the settings were too complicated and he kind of gave up early to solve it himself, because he had to ask questions on every line.
I tried to explain that with ActivityPub and Fediverse, you cannot control how the content is presented to others, because the other software decides, and showed him examples of other WordPress blogs and how their posts look like on Mastodon inside desktop on a browser, on the Android app Tusky and the official mobile app, and on a Firefish instance in a browser. He immediately understood the concept of separating design from content and its attachments and said, “Okay, but actually this is fine. And he went on to say, “But you know, I don’t really want the featured image of my posts to show up because it’s tied to the design of the home page, I just want to use the first one or two images within the post itself. I replied that that might be possible, but it’s not currently the case. While he took a break to get some groceries, I coded the necessary extension in a few lines of code.
Right now it’s been 3 hours and we started saying like let’s speed things up and I was helping him out more. He didn’t want to share his entire posts because they contained too much detail, but he also didn’t have any custom excerpts that could be used. He agreed to create custom excerpts for his 30+ posts because he understood the benefits: The ActivityPub object is now configured to be sent as a note with this template. Fortunately, this standard behavior is already being simplified.
Now he asked again “but where can I see my profile now” I want to see what it looks like. “Your website is your profile! O.K., I was being nitpicky, he actually already meant “what does my profile look like to people who read my posts on Mastodon”. I sent his account a follow request and showed him the screen of my browser with the Mastodon web user interface. “But there are no posts! Why don’t I see any of my posts.”. I had to explain caching and when remote content shows up and when it does not. But by copying and pasting the permalink of the posts into my Mastodon search box, he was finally able to see what we wanted. And he was excited!
And what about following others?
I thought we would be done already, then he asked “but how do I get people to follow me?”. I explained to him that either I could boost this post to my followers to get the attention of others, or that it was his duty to communicate his new Fediverse handle, and that he really liked that people could directly search for the website URL to find his profile. And after he saw my reply to his post in his comments admin menu, he was hooked.
We had a break and I thought we were done and he looked up and said “this is cool, actually really cool”. Now that he was even more interested in the Fediverse, he wanted to join (to my surprise) and said “but how can I follow you now?”. At this point we could have just set up a Mastodon account for him, but then he would have ended up with an additional service. I pointed out the benefits and features of Mastodon and that there is an alternative using the “Friends” plugin, which of course is not as feature rich (no public and local timelines, no search, no exploration features, etc.). But since he said he didn’t need those, he was curious to try the Friends plugin.
Again, the installation was done in seconds. And it was easy to add a new follower and type in my Mastodon handle. The preview of my profile reassured him, and he even saw my latest posts.
Problems
But our happiness was soon dashed: he did not show up on my follower list. I was also pretty new to the friends plugin and didn’t immediately get the solutions to what was going wrong, there were no error or warning messages anywhere. The reasons the follow request was not handled correctly was that we disabled author profiles in the ActivityPub plugin, but the Friends plugin needs them because it does not fallback to the blog profile.
Now you might say: OK, let us roll back, let us make a backup, change the username and use the author profile. But if we now deactivate the blog user and change the username to the one we used as the blog user: federation problems would surely occur. The reason is that the post has already been published and therefore the blog profile is now known to a lot of instances, they’ve already cached it’s publicKey and the id as well as the url of the ActivityPub actor.
How long would those we cached last? I couldn’t tell and can’t now. It seems we lost the chance to choose the preferred user handle, which would have been something like <firstname>@<lastname>.org.
Conlusion
In the end we had a tea and postponed the decision what to do now. Overall, however, and I think we both shared this, the enthusiasm outweighed the problems we encountered.

Ero interessato a creare un blog per conto di terzi e questa cosa sarebbe top, oltre al fatto che non so ancora cosa usare per crearlo pensavo a Neocities e poi creare il blog con qualcosa di semi automatico in html ecc.. oppure a questo punto meglio un servizio di host gratuito?
@Man il plugin ActivityPub per Wordpress, non fa altro che rendere leggibile per il fediverso il tuo sito: - rendendo identificabili come utenti del fediverso i nomi degli autori - rendendo identificabili come post del fediverso i post pubblicati - rendendo identificabili come messaggi del fediverso i commenti - accodando come commenti al post del blog i messaggi di risposta che avrai ottenuto dagli utenti del Fediverso
In pratica puoi creare quella che è a tutti gli effetti un'istanza del fediverso, in cui gli utenti sono gli autori del blog.
La cosa interessante è che se nel tuo post menzioni una comunità Lemmy, puoi anche aprire un post su Lemmy con commenti incrociati leggibili sia da una parte che dall'altra

Tieni conto che è un po' un mondo nuovo: all'inizio non è facile capire come e dove debbano comparire i commenti importanti, quali possono essere i problemi tecnici bloccanti (col penultimo aggiornamento mi è finito il sito offline 😅), ma ci sta. Di fatto, grazie a questo plugin per gli utenti è diventato ancora più semplice crearsi una vera e propria istanza

I like how #mastodon improved it's default handling of non "Note" (unknown) Activities, with support of summary, name (title) and the hashtags.
I think we should re-use the WordPress Post-Formats (for the ActivityPub WordPress plugin) and abandon the shortcode settings in favour of a clean and simple default handling!
@Matthias Pfefferle unfortunately I noticed that when a Wordpress post is published as a Lemmy thread, the thread title becomes a hyperlink to the featured image, rather than to the post itself (the link to the post is still reported in the text of the thread's opening post) . But this is probably Lemmy's interpretative limitation.

Una funzione particolarmente interessante è la possibilità di creare una propria lista di software consigliati utilizzando il software libero Scribouilli per creare e condividere uno o più "mini-siti", il programma richiede il collegamento a un repository GIT.
Ho provato a giocare con questa funzione creando una mia piccola lista e traducendo alcune parti dell'interfaccia in italiano, naturalmente le schede dell'annuario sono in francese, ma rimangono sempre un utile punto di riferimento per la ricerca di software liberi.

@paul Each server on the Fediverse is totally independent, there's (deliberately) no central service which would link accounts from different servers together.
I think most people just set up separate accounts on each Fediverse service they want to use, and promote their alternate accounts on their main one.
So, yeah, boosting from your Masto account is a good idea, and people who are particularly interested can follow your BookWyrm account to see all its updates without boosts.

Abbiamo preparato un questionario anonimo dedicato a tutti gli utenti del Fediverso italiano. Si tratta del primo tentativo di indagare ad ampio spettro l'utilizzo che gli utenti del "Fediverso libero" fanno dei loro social.

Ho corretto, data l'importanza della mancanza di Reddit, non potevo non farlo. Chiaramente i primi 22 che hanno risposto finora al sondaggio non hanno trovato quella scelta, ma ho ritenuto che fosse meglio introdurlo tardi che per niente. Grazie per la segnalazione
Per gli amici da telefono: il questionario non è mobile friendly almeno sul mio dispositivo, ma sono riuscito comunque a compilarlo usando il sito desktop e il telefono in landscape
Con le ultime versioni però è migliorato e si stanno focalizzando di più sull'esperienza mobile.....il problema è che l'istanza server Cryptpad dei Devol è ancora ferma alla versione 5.3, di maggio 2023.

@Ryoma123 si tratta di una modifica ai file di configurazione per offuscare i dati degli utenti della nostra istanza verso alcune determinate istanze. Facendolo verso Threads, il risultato sarà che quando la federazione dovesse essere finalmente attivata anche da parte di Threads, gli utenti di Poliverso.org potranno seguire ed essere seguiti dagli utenti di Threads, senza che i propri metadati (nome e collegamenti, per esempio) vengano condivisi con Meta
@Ryoma123 non so se verrà mai rilasciata una patch ufficiale, Considerando che ormai mastodom è Pappa e Ciccia con Zuckerberg, Ma la funzione di silenziamento, già adottata da alcune istanze che hanno deciso di tentare la federazione, è comunque già una soluzione piuttosto valida per evitare di inciampare per caso su contenuti di una certa istanza e soprattutto necessita del consenso degli utenti prima di essere seguiti da utenti di quell'istanza silenziata

Diciamo che il silenziamento è una misura più che adeguata per tutelare gli utenti della propria istanza. Ma nessuna contromisura è sufficiente a tutelare gli utenti che espongono pubblicamente biografia, collegamenti e messaggi.
La soluzione trovata dagli sviluppatori di Friendica è molto intelligente per evitare uno scraping massivo sulla singola istanza, ma chiaramente lascia il tempo che trova

Nel fediverso alcune istanze hanno iniziato a bloccare Threads a livello di istanza. Come amministratore di Mastodon.uno, mi è stato chiesto in molte occasioni se vieteremo threads a livello di istanza.
Non lo faremo, perchè basta silenziarlo e gli utenti se credono possono pure bloccarlo e isolarsi al 100% da threads ed ecco perché...
Privacy: Meta non ha bisogno di ActivityPub per assorbire i vostri dati o metadati
L'argomentazione secondo cui l'adesione di Threads al fediverso è negativa per la nostra privacy è una cazzata.
Il punto è che Mastodon ha un'API aperta e quasi tutte le cose pubblicate sono pubbliche. Perciò sarebbe banale per Meta (o per chiunque altro Big Tech) appropriarsi di tutto questo senza tanto clamore mediatico. In effetti, c'è già chi può farlo basta creare o acquistare un'istanza per raccogliere tutti i dati.
Prendiamo ad esempio il mio profilo: mastodon.uno/@filippodb. È tutto lì, scaricabile. La timeline locale di qualsiasi istanza è pronta per essere inghiottita in qualsiasi centro dati Meta. Piuttosto sarebbe utile impostare
Questo non tiene conto del fatto che Mastodon ha un'API che chiunque può usare per estrarre . Potrebbero seguire la timeline locale su Mastodon.uno e probabilmente otterrebbero comunque il 90% dei dati che vogliono, ammesso che ne vogliano qualcuno. Oppure creare un account su qualche centinaio di istanze e ottenere i dati in questo modo. Ma non lo faranno perché non è per questo che lo fanno.
Lo fanno perché devono farlo. L'UE sta imponendo a tutte le grandi aziende tecnologiche di essere più aperte e interoperabili. Hanno lanciato il servizio nell'UE solo ieri e ci è voluto così tanto perché stavano facendo cose subdole con il tracciamento per le quali l'UE li avrebbe multati immediatamente.
A mio parere chi defedera threads è come chi crea un servizio email, la rende disponibile a tutti e poi all'improvviso blocca tutti gli indirizzi gmail perché non gli piace cosa fa Google con tutte le motivazioni etiche e morali e di privacy del mondo! È ovvio che è facile dipingere meta e gmail come il male in terra. Ma un operatore email non blocca una email perchè il proprietario è un capitalista della sorveglianza, lo blocca perchè è una grande fonte di spam e di truffe.
Ok, ora il protocollo activitypub non è rispettato da threads e ci sta un silenziamento preventivo ma se threads rispetterà il protocollo sarà possibile a chi è su threads seguire gli utenti mastodon e magari un giorno migrare su mastodon con tutti i propri follower, perchè impedirlo? Alla fine avere mastodon è come avere una email tutanota o protonmail, una email sicura con cui si può comunicare anche con gmail. Ora su M1 le comunicazioni con threads vengono segnalate come “sospette” ma spetta ad ogni persona decidere se è spam da evitare o se vi va di ricevere comunicazioni, non ci deve essere una persona che decida per voi.
Cosa si guadagna a impedire agli utenti della propria istanza di seguire i loro amici e familiari che hanno scelto di utilizzare Threads, se non farli passare a Threads? Un singolo utente può bloccare un'istanza da solo, il che è il bello di Mastodon: gli utenti possono scegliere di bloccare o non bloccare ciò che vogliono. Oppure possono scegliere di seguire gli account threads senza usare l'app proprietaria di meta che ti succhia tutti i dati dallo smartphone.
Qui non sono i benvenuti!
Un'altra argomentazione che ho letto qualche volta, a parte la privacy, è che Meta non siano i benvenuti nel fediverso. Questo mi lascia perplesso.
Il fatto è che come admin non abbiamo il diritto di dire chi è o non è il benvenuto, e ogni persona/entità ha la possibilità di usare il fediverso fintanto che rispetta le regole.
Non vogliamo pubblicità qui!
Questo posso accettarlo. Nessuno vuole vedere pubblicità sul fediverso, e potete scommettere che se c'è un modo per Meta di farlo, lo faranno assolutamente.
Ma non sono sicuro che sia possibile. L'unico modo che vedo per farlo sarebbe quello di iniettare annunci pubblicitari come post di activitypub nei feed degli utenti. Gli annunci sono di solito iniettati tramite JavaScript e questo non si tradurrebbe nel fediverse perché la vostra istanza non saprebbe come analizzarlo.
Inoltre, non sono un legale, ma credo che se Meta dovesse iniettare annunci nelle timeline degli utenti in modo da mostrarli su altre piattaforme, le conseguenze legali sarebbero notevoli.
Perché Mastodon.uno silenzia Threads
Il fediverso si federa con una tonnellata di server e di persone, rendendo così il tutto più vario e popolare, sicuramente è una buona cosa aggiungere molte nuove persone. Potremo aprire le porte a persone che prima non erano a conoscenza del Fediverso e successivamente potrebbero essere in grado di spostarsi sul Fediverso e quindi perchè no, aprire nuove istanze, perchè quindi non dare un bel punto di approdo ma silenziare?
Abbiamo deciso di aspettare e vedere. Penso che il blocco delle istanze di Threads sia ridicolo, francamente, se non si vogliono vedere messaggi di threads il silenziamento basta.
Se le persone su Mastodon.uno non vogliono avere nulla a che fare con Threads, va benissimo. C'è la possibilità di bloccare interi domini a livello di utente. Quindi, se siete così preoccupati, sentitevi liberi di bloccare threads.net sul vostro account. Questo lascerà comunque Threads aperto a coloro che, come me, vogliono aspettare e vedere come andranno le cose.
Gestire un'istanza è molto difficile, spesso ci vengono gettati addosso un carico di responsabilità enorme. ma specialmente in questo caso è veramente facile bloccarlo da soli con un paio di click
Pensieri finali
Vigileremo su come si comporterà Threads. Ma per ora Mastodon.uno in via cautelativa lo ha silenziato, questo impedirà di vedere utenti threads nelle timeline pubbliche come se nulla fosse successo e a parte il fatto che potrete decidere di seguire qualche amico su threads che ancora non si decide a trasferirsi su mastodon.
Qual è l'impatto concreto delle azioni della nostra associazione? È questa la domanda a cui ci piace rispondere alla fine dell'anno (vedi dati 2022): prendersi il tempo per quantificare le nostre...
@GualTRex Purtroppo no, in Italia ci sono alcune istanze dei servizi liberi offerti da @Framasoft, vedi ad esempio @devol Framasoft con la sua storia ventennale costituisce quasi un unicum anche in Europa. La sua importanza per il #SoftwareLibero e la #CulturaLibera vanno ben oltre le cifre, pur importanti. Il cambiamento spaventa, soprattutto quando tanti dettagli sembrano cambiare direzione e polarità. Il fatto che #Threads faccia parte di questo posto sembra un paradosso per alcuni e un sacrilegio per altri. Nessuno di noi vuole vedere il #Fediverso trasformarsi in una discarica tossica per il peggio che i social media hanno da offrire. What is Friendica
Friendica is a decentralized communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumblr.
Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently.
Using Git
Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2023.12 release would be cd friendica git pull bin/composer.phar install --no-dev cd addon git pull If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.
Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.
As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.
The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2023.12 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.
Post Update Tasks
The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script bin/console dbstructure update from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.
Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database.

We are very happy to announce the availability of the new stable release of Friendica “Yellow Archangel” 2023.12. Finally wrapping up the changes since May – the highlights of this release are
the bluesky connector has been made bi-directional,
moderation reports can now be send by users and reviewed by the node admins,
user defined groups are now called Circles and forum accounts are now Group accounts, and last but not least
users now have a better control over their network streams with the new Channels feature.
Note that the minimal PHP version for Friendica was raised to PHP 7.4 with this release.

What is Friendica
Friendica is a decentralized communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumblr.
Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently.
Using Git
Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2023.12 release would be cd friendica git pull bin/composer.phar install --no-dev cd addon git pull If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.
Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.
As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.
The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2023.12 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.
Post Update Tasks
The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script bin/console dbstructure update from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.
Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database.

There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.

Huge thanks for the suggestion! We’ve now implemented that as well and being able to paste non-DOI ids or URLs and getting the same article preview indeed greatly improves the usability.
