Recently the MagQuest competition on improving the measuring of the Earth’s magnetic field announced that the contestants in the final phase have now moved on to launching their satellites within the near future. The goal here is to create a much improved World Magnetic Model (WMM), which is used by the World Geodetic System (WGS). The WGS is an integral part of cartography, geodesy and satellite-based navigation, which includes every sat nav, smartphone and similar with built-in GNSS capabilities.

Although in this age of sat navs and similar it can seem quaint to see anyone bother with using the Earth’s magnetic field with a compass, there is a very good reason why e.g. your Android smartphone has an API for estimating the Earth’s magnetic field at the current location. After your sat nav or smartphone uses its magnetometer, the measurements are then corrected so that ‘north’ really is ‘north’. Since this uses the WMM, it’s pertinent that this model is kept as up to date as possible, with serious shifts in 2019 necessitating an early update outside of the usual five-year cycle.

Goal of the MagQuest competition is thus to find a method that enables much faster, even real-time updates. The three candidate satellites feature three different types of magnetometers: a scalar-vector magnetometer (COSMO), a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) quantum sensor, and the Io-1 satellite containing both a vector fluxgate and atomic scalar magnetometer.

The NV quantum magnetometer is quite possibly the most interesting one, featuring a new, quantum-level approach for magnetic sensing. This effectively uses a flaw in a diamond’s carbon matrix to create a quantum spin state that interacts with magnetic fields and can subsequently be read out. The advantage of this method is its extreme sensitivity, which makes it an interesting sensor for many other applications where measuring the Earth’s magnetic field is essential.

[NullPxl]’s Ban-Rays concept is a wearable that detects when one is in the presence of camera-bearing smartglasses, such as Meta’s line of Ray-Bans. A project in progress, it’s currently focused on how to reliably perform detection without resorting to using a camera itself. Right now, it plays a well-known audio cue whenever it gets a hit.
Once software is nailed down, the device aims to be small enough to fit into glasses.
Currently, [NullPxl] is exploring two main methods of detection. The first takes advantage of the fact that image sensors in cameras act as tiny reflectors for IR. That means camera-toting smartglasses have an identifying feature, which can be sensed and measured. You can see a sample such reflection in the header image, up above.

As mentioned, Ban-Rays eschews the idea of using a camera to perform this. [NullPxl] understandably feels that putting a camera on glasses in order to detect glasses with cameras doesn’t hold much water, conceptually.

The alternate approach is to project IR in a variety of wavelengths while sensing reflections with a photodiode. Initial tests show that scanning a pair of Meta smartglasses in this way does indeed look different from regular eyeglasses, but probably not enough to be conclusive on its own at the moment. That brings us to the second method being used: wireless activity.

Characterizing a device by its wireless activity turned out to be trickier than expected. At first, [NullPxl] aimed to simply watch for BLE (Bluetooth Low-Energy) advertisements coming from smartglasses, but these only seem to happen during pairing and power-up, and sometimes when the glasses are removed from the storage case. Clearly a bit more is going to be needed, but since these devices rely heavily on wireless communications there might yet be some way to actively query or otherwise characterize their activity.

This kind of project is something that is getting some interest. Here’s another smartglasses detector that seems to depend entirely on sniffing OUIs (Organizationally Unique Identifiers); an approach [NullPxl] suspects isn’t scalable due to address randomization in BLE. Clearly, a reliable approach is still in the works.

The increasing numbers of smartglasses raises questions about the impact of normalizing tech companies turning people into always-on recording devices. Of course, the average person is already being subtly recorded by a staggering number of hidden cameras. But at least it’s fairly obvious when an individual is recording you with a personal device like their phone. That may not be the case for much longer.

The G4 iMac is one of the more popular computers in the restomodding scene given its charm and unparalleled ergonomics. Most modern machines that people squeeze in don’t have a disc drive anymore though, so [EasternBloc Engineering] has fitted a retractable MagSafe charger into the drive bay of the machine.

In this example, the iMac has become simply a monitor, instead of an entire all-in-one computer, and the original 15″ display has been replaced with a lightweight 22″ monitor on a 3D printed VESA mount. The narrow confines of the iMac neck meant [EasternBloc Engineering] had to sever the connectors from the HDMI and power cable before reconnecting them once they were fed through.

The really novel part of this restomod is the engineering of the retractable MagSafe charger mount that pops out of the drive bay. [EasternBloc Engineering] started by looking at repurposing an original disc drive, but quickly turned to a bespoke 3D printed solution. Using a LEGO motor and gears for the drive, the system can stick its tongue out at you in a more modern way. A straight in-and-out mechanism like on an original disc drive would’ve been easier to implement, but we appreciate the extra time for angling the phone that respects the ergonomics of the machine. We hope the files will become available soon for this part of the mod since electromechanical components are more interesting than the VESA mount.

Sembra che alla Casa Bianca non abbiano molto le idee chiare… almeno a giudicare dall’ennesimo cambio di rotta sulla vendita dei chip avanzati di Nvidia alla Cina, con l’amministrazione Trump che dopo mesi di restrizioni ha deciso di autorizzare nuovamente l’export dell’H200 verso clienti selezionati.

Il presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump ha autorizzato Nvidia a riprendere la vendita del chip avanzato H200 a una selezione di clienti in Cina, dopo mesi di restrizioni imposte nell’ambito delle tensioni tecnologiche tra Washington e Pechino. L’annuncio è arrivato l‘8 dicembre attraverso un messaggio pubblicato dal presidente sui social media, in cui ha ribadito la volontà di garantire la sicurezza nazionale, sostenere l’occupazione negli Stati Uniti e mantenere l’industria americana dell’intelligenza artificiale in una posizione di leadership globale.

La nuova disposizione non riguarda soltanto Nvidia, ma si estenderà anche ad altri produttori statunitensi di semiconduttori, tra cui AMD. La decisione arriva a pochi giorni dalla visita a Washington di Jensen Huang, amministratore delegato di Nvidia, impegnato in colloqui intensivi con l’amministrazione statunitense.

Negli ultimi mesi, Nvidia è stata al centro del confronto strategico tra Stati Uniti e Cina: le precedenti restrizioni imposte da Washington avevano bloccato l’esportazione verso Pechino dei modelli di chip più avanzati dell’azienda. A luglio, la Casa Bianca aveva già allentato parte dei vincoli, pur imponendo a Nvidia un contributo obbligatorio del 15% sui ricavi generati in Cina. In risposta, secondo fonti locali, le autorità cinesi avrebbero invitato le aziende tecnologiche nazionali a sospendere gli acquisti di chip Nvidia progettati appositamente per quel mercato.

In una dichiarazione diffusa a BBC News, Nvidia ha espresso apprezzamento per la nuova posizione dell’amministrazione statunitense, sottolineando che la possibilità di operare nel mercato cinese può contribuire alla crescita del settore manifatturiero americano e tutelare migliaia di posti di lavoro qualificati.

Il chip H200 rappresenta un prodotto di fascia alta, seppur inferiore di una generazione rispetto all’attuale piattaforma Blackwell, considerata uno degli standard più avanzati nel campo dei semiconduttori dedicati all’intelligenza artificiale. L’annuncio della Casa Bianca ha avuto un immediato impatto positivo sui mercati, con un lieve incremento del valore delle azioni Nvidia.

Trump ha precisato che, nell’ambito del nuovo accordo, il 25% dei ricavi derivanti dalle vendite approvate confluirà nelle casse degli Stati Uniti. La BBC ha chiesto ulteriori chiarimenti sul meccanismo di questo contributo, un tema che potrebbe alimentare il dibattito tra i membri del Congresso più rigidi nei confronti della Cina.

Secondo Alex Capri, docente della National University of Singapore, la riapertura alla vendita degli acceleratori H200 potrebbe consentire ai due Paesi di guadagnare tempo per affrontare questioni più delicate, come la gestione delle terre rare – materiali cruciali per la produzione di componenti elettronici, di cui Pechino detiene una posizione quasi monopolistica. Capri ha aggiunto che, pur potendo trarre vantaggio dall’accesso agli H200, la Cina continuerà a lavorare per ridurre la propria dipendenza dai chip statunitensi. In passato, le autorità cinesi avevano già invitato le imprese locali a rinunciare ai modelli H20 prodotti da Nvidia e a privilegiare semiconduttori sviluppati internamente.

Sul fronte della sicurezza, un’analisi dei ricercatori del Center for Security and Emerging Technologies (CSET) della Georgetown University segnala che l’Esercito popolare di liberazione ha già fatto ricorso a chip avanzati progettati da aziende statunitensi per rafforzare capacità militari basate sull’intelligenza artificiale. Cole McFaul, analista senior del CSET, ha affermato che l’accesso a semiconduttori più performanti potrebbe facilitare ulteriormente lo sviluppo di sistemi militari cinesi basati su IA e contribuire a rafforzare il vantaggio strategico di Pechino in scenari operativi futuri.

Of all people, it is center-right parties in Brussels that are supporting plans for the mass screening of private messages. The proposal cuts deep into civil liberties. The consequences for chats between teenagers and their own parents are particularly drastic.

The battle over “chat control” and the confidentiality of our communications has long since become the defining question regarding the relationship between the state and the citizen in the digital age. On December 4th, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner (EPP) defended plans before the European Parliament that cut deeply into civil liberties. What is particularly bitter for conservative voters is that it is precisely the center-right-led governments in Berlin and Vienna that have helped secure a majority for this assault on privacy in Brussels. While the leader of the German CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Jens Spahn, assured the public in October that suspicionless scanning of chats was akin to “preemptively opening every letter to see if it contains something illegal”—and that neither he nor his party would support it—reality now looks quite different.

The EU governments have agreed on a rotten compromise. While “voluntary” chat control is technically supposed to be at the discretion of the providers, the result is the same: American tech giants like Meta or Google will be allowed to screen our private messages en masse and without any initial suspicion. The state is effectively outsourcing its monopoly on law enforcement and deputizing US corporations as sheriffs. Instead of independent judges, error-prone secret algorithms from Silicon Valley will decide whether our chats are suspicious.

Mr. Spahn still owes us an answer to a crucial question: How is this mass screening any different from suspicionless chat control? Would the indiscriminate opening of our letters be acceptable just because Deutsche Post decided to do it voluntarily? The privacy of correspondence is “inviolable” under our Basic Law (Grundgesetz). Privatized chat control remains a violation of fundamental principles in a constitutional state.

ID Cards for the Internet

Yet, hidden within the draft law on chat control is a perhaps even more perfidious attack on freedom—a clause with the potential to destroy the internet as we know it: The opening of an email or messenger account is to require mandatory age verification. What sounds like a technicality is actually political dynamite. It spells the end of the right to anonymous digital communication. Anyone wishing to use WhatsApp, Signal, or even a simple email inbox in the future will have to show their ID card or their face.

A whistleblower wishing to remain anonymous for fear of investigation will hardly dare to tip off a journalist about government corruption if they have to upload their ID to a database to do so. They are effectively being silenced. Investigative journalism, anonymous pastoral care, and confidential counseling in crisis situations will become impossible. Furthermore, it is only a matter of time before these internet ID databases are hacked, opening the floodgates for criminals to commit identity theft. Our security is not being protected here; it is being endangered. Moreover, a new bureaucratic monster is being created. While the economy groans under the weight of regulations, European tech start-ups and companies are being forced to implement complex new verification systems.

The State as Super-Nanny

The height of hubris, however, is the planned treatment of adolescents. According to the will of the EU governments, app stores should blanketly refuse the installation of apps to anyone under 17 if those apps could theoretically be misused for “cyber grooming.” The aim is to protect minors from being approached with sexual intent. However, since the State Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia notes that this occurs on almost all platforms—from WhatsApp and Instagram to online games—this regulation amounts to a digital ban on communication.

You have to let that sink in: A 16-year-old would no longer be allowed to chat with their class teacher, their coach, or—even more absurdly—with their own parents. The state presumes to know what is good for our children better than families do. The parental right to raise children, protected by the constitution, is being trampled underfoot. How well parents know their own children’s maturity no longer counts.

This is not child protection; it is digital house arrest. Instead of hunting the perpetrators, the victims are being locked up. This is the logic of an overreaching nanny state that mistrusts its citizens. True security comes from strong families, not from state paternalism that drives teenagers into digital isolation. It won’t work anyway: our children will simply ask us to register their phones as adult devices.

Ineffective Symbolic Politics

Overall, these measures miss their mark completely. The Association of German Criminal Investigators is already warning of an overload due to the flood of automated chat reports. Almost half of the reported chats are perfectly legal—such as holiday photos from the beach. There will be no time left for genuine cases because investigators will be busy screening harmless citizens.

The European Parliament has recognized this madness. Across party lines, it is demanding that chat surveillance be limited to actual suspects and is rejecting mandatory age checks and app bans. It is banking on civil principles: proportionality and targeted prosecution instead of mass surveillance and the paternalism of millions of innocent people.

However, without support from Berlin, this sensible position will not prevail in the upcoming negotiations on the final wording of the law. The center-right-led federal government must decide: Does it want the “transparent citizen” and the disempowerment of parents? Or will it return to the values of the Constitution? When the state begins to have our mail opened and forbids our children contact with the outside world, a red line has been crossed. We do not need a nanny from Brussels—and certainly not one from Berlin.

Qualche mese fa, al Senato si è “sventato” il tentativo di interpretare autenticamente una norma di oltre quaranta anni fa per congelare i contenziosi sull’accollo integrale al SSN*. Allora, notte tempo e alla zitta come piace a volte al legislatore, si proponevano tre righe con le quali spazzare via decenni di tenuta del sistema universalistico e, in particolare il faticoso percorso di integrazione sociosanitaria.

In buona sostanza, a cosa si tentava di opporre rimedio con tale maldestro tentativo?

Ad una lettura dell’ordinamento (peraltro ineccepibile, costituzionalmente orientata e rispettosa degli vincoli internazionali) con la quale Corte di Cassazione, a difesa dei principi istitutivi del nostro SSN e delle persone affette da Alzheimer grave e per i loro caregiver, con più sentenze, (dal 2012 ad oggi se ne contano decine e univocamente orientate), ha affermato la copertura economica in struttura ritenendola sostanzialmente un’attività sanitaria, in cui è impossibile separare ciò che è “cura medica” da ciò che è “assistenza”.

Non ci sono riusciti, perché ci fu chi se ne accorse e pose in luce l’arretramento dei diritti di una simile operazione retroattiva.

Oggi con questo documento con cui si invocano i diritti (!) ci si riprova. Il tentativo è ben più articolato e subdolo: in primis lo si fa assertivamente “a nome della società civile” e dell’”equità”, facendolo firmare un po’ trasversalmente, come se le associazioni dei pazienti e dei pensionati avessero interesse ad affermare di dover pagare loro la retta di ricovero, anziché difendere l’orientamento della Suprema Corte. Poi lo si fa passare attraverso lo strumento della delega in modo tale che non vi sia di fatto alcun passaggio parlamentare, ma che proceda “babbo Governo” a salvare i conti al più presto affinché non si rompano gli argini.

La discussione sulle rette in struttura per le persone anziane non autosufficienti e/o con disabilità grave da molti anni e non si affronta così.

Oggi si mistifica presentandola come una questione di “equità” quando invece ha una sola e chiara matrice: la questione dei denari e della “sostenibilità”. Dell’assistenza ad una Italia anziana e sempre più con problemi di salute cronici ad alto impegno sanitario. Ma dietro le formule apparentemente neutre si gioca una partita che riguarda la vita quotidiana di migliaia di famiglie che, non potendo né sapendo assistere in modo qualificato e complesso il proprio caro, si trova a dover pagare per molti anni fino a 4000,00 euro il mese.

Dunque ci riprovano di nuovo: la proposta di emendamento, promossa dal “Patto per un nuovo welfare sulla non autosufficienza”, chiede di intervenire sul DPCM LEA per chiarire che le prestazioni per anziani con diagnosi di demenza rientrano comunque nel regime ordinario di compartecipazione 50% SSN e 50% utente. Formalmente, si tratta di una norma “interpretativa”. In realtà, l’obiettivo esplicito è quello di chiudere il contenzioso e riportare indietro l’orologio, sterilizzando gli effetti favorevoli delle sentenze di Cassazione.

Secondo i promotori, l’azzeramento della retta per tutti i pazienti con Alzheimer – indipendentemente dal reddito – sarebbe “ingiusto”, perché destinerebbe risorse pubbliche anche ai più benestanti, riducendo la sostenibilità del sistema. Da qui la richiesta di tornare al 50% generalizzato, rinviando ad un futuro decreto legislativo la revisione complessiva della compartecipazione per tutti i servizi agli anziani non autosufficienti.

Sul piano del diritto, la proposta rischia di scontrarsi con i principi costituzionali che governano la tutela della salute e la protezione delle persone più vulnerabili. L’articolo 32 della Costituzione qualifica la salute come “fondamentale diritto dell’individuo e interesse della collettività”, mentre l’articolo 38 riconosce alle persone inabili il diritto al mantenimento e all’assistenza sociale. L’Alzheimer e le forme gravi di demenza non sono semplicemente “costi” da dividere tra pubblico e privato: sono condizioni che annullano l’autonomia, richiedono assistenza continuativa, espongono le famiglie a una pressione economica e psicologica enorme. Trattare questo bisogno come un pacchetto di servizi “per metà sanitari e per metà sociali” significa non coglierne la natura reale.

L’Italia ha ratificato la Convenzione ONU sui diritti delle persone con disabilità, che impegna gli Stati a garantire un accesso effettivo alla salute, all’assistenza e alla vita indipendente nella comunità, senza discriminazioni. Le persone con demenza e patologie croniche e degenerative rientrano a pieno titolo nella platea delle persone con disabilità: hanno diritto a servizi adeguati, accessibili e sostenibili,

Dire che “non ci sono risorse” senza un dibattito parlamentare adeguato e gettare via con un colpo di spugna decenni di integrazione sociosanitaria, è inaccettabile e, prevedibilmente, non sarà accettata dalle Corti che hanno a che fare con un corpus normativo complesso e stratificato.

Chi ha a cuore la sostenibilità del sistema si occupi di portare in modo aperto e franco il dibattito nella società civile e nelle sedi parlamentari, sottoponendo agli occhi di tutti la difficoltà di una mancanza di accurata programmazione e di scelta politica. Smetta di trincerarsi in cavilli e interpretazioni autentiche sperando di fermare la giustizia. Lo si affronti il tema (ed il tema dell’invecchiamento e della cronicità è un tema di importante impatto economico per tutti i cittadini e per le casse dello Stato) in modo razionale e complessivo, smettendo di aggredire diritti quesiti in vigore dal ’78

E se il problema è che un modello di gratuità universale favorirebbe anche i redditi alti, la risposta non è quella di tornare a caricare tutti al 50%, ma costruire criteri seri di equità e, soprattutto, fare investimenti veri sulla domiciliarità e sulle soluzioni di comunità, non imposte come alternativa punitiva alla residenzialità ma offerte come possibilità reale, sostenuta da servizi territoriali.

L’urgenza oggi non è bloccare le sentenze che riconoscono il carattere sanitario dell’assistenza per l’Alzheimer grave, ma fare un passo lungimirante studiando soluzioni e programmando il futuro.

La non autosufficienza severa è un bisogno sociosanitario di alta intensità affinché nessuna famiglia debba essere costretta a scegliere tra la cura di un genitore e la propria sopravvivenza economica.

Come Associazione Luca Coscioni, crediamo che la discussione sulle rette non possa essere ridotta a un problema contabile. È una questione di dignità, di libertà e di eguaglianza. Per questo continueremo a monitorare il percorso di questa proposta, a denunciarne i rischi e a lavorare perché la riforma dell’assistenza agli anziani non autosufficienti sia davvero all’altezza delle promesse fatte alle persone più fragili.
