Per chi avesse letto il mio messaggio di ieri sull'idea di lasciare la mia istanza #Nextcloud e spostare tutto su #cryptpad.org, beh oggi ho scoperto #mailbox.org che per due spiccioli l'anno ti dà tutto quello che ti dà #KryptPad più la mail (e altre cose più o meno interessanti).
Se mi convincessi che mailbox.org è la cosa buona potrei mollare GMail...
Vi viene in mente qualche punto debole di #mailbox.org che dovrei valutare meglio prima di decidere?

Sleeping Rough in Alaska with a USPS Cargo Bike
Out of all 49 beautiful US states (plus New Jersey), the one you’d probably least want to camp outside in during the winter is arguably Alaska. If you were to spend a night camping out in the Alaskan winter, your first choice of shelter almost certainly wouldn’t be a USPS electric cargo trike, but over on YouTube [Matt Spears] shows that it’s not that hard to make a lovely little camper out of the mail bike.
We’re not sure how much use these sorts of cargo trikes get in Alaska, but [Matt] seems to have acquired this one surplus after an entirely-predictable crash took one of the mirrors off. A delta configuration trike — single wheel in front — is tippy at the best of times, but the high center of gravity you’d get from a loading the rear with mail just makes it worse. That evidently did not deter the United States Postal Service, and it didn’t deter [Matt] either.
His conversion is rather minimal: to turn the cargo compartment into a camper, he only adds a few lights, a latch on the inside of the rear door, and a wood-burning stove for heat. Rather than have heavy insulation shrink the already-small cargo compartment, [Matt] opts to insulate himself with a pile of warm sleeping bags. Some zip-tie tire chains even let him get the bike moving (slowly) in a winter storm that he claims got his truck stuck.
While it might not be a practical winter vehicle, at least on un-plowed mountain roads, starting with an electric-assist cargo trike Uncle Sam already paid for represented a huge cost and time savings vs starting from scratch like this teardrop bike camper we featured a while back. While not as luxurious, it seems more practical for off-roading than another electric RV we’ve seen.

Ray Marching in Excel
3D graphics are made up of little more then very complicated math. With enough time, you could probably compute a ray marching by hand. Or, you could set up Excel to do it for you!
Ray marching is a form of ray tracing, where a ray is stepped along based on how close it is to the nearest surface. By taking advantage of signed distance functions, such an algorithm can be quite effective, and in some instances much more efficient then traditional ray marching algorithms. But the fact that ray marching is so mathematically well defined is probably why [ExcelTABLE] used it to make a ray traced game in Excel.
Under the hood, the ray marching works by casting a ray out from the camera and measuring its distance from a set of three dimensional functions. If that distance is below a certain value, this is considered a surface hit. On surface hits, a simple normal shader computes pixel brightness. This is then rendered out by variable formatting in the cells of the spreadsheet.
For those of you following along at home, the tutorial should work just fine in any modern spreadsheet software including Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc. It also provides a great explanation of the math and concepts of ray marching, so is worth a read regardless your opinions on Excel’s status as a so-called “programming language.”

formatore, filosofo, blogger, instancabile artigiano di pensiero critico.
Un’occasione per aggiornare e rilanciare la campagna “Obiezione alla guerra”, insieme a “Leva la leva”, dando voce agli obiettori e alle obiettrici dei conflitti di oggi, in un tempo in cui il silenzio viene spesso scambiato per consenso.
Di cosa parleremo:
- smontare le narrazioni dominanti che presentano la difesa armata come inevitabile
- riscoprire il ruolo della diplomazia, del diritto e delle istituzioni internazionali nel prevenire e fermare la guerra
- esplorare strategie e pratiche della difesa non armata e nonviolenta, già esistenti, già praticabili, già necessarie

Questa riflessione guarda avanti. A una sicurezza che non nasce dalla minaccia reciproca delle armi, ma dalla giustizia, dalla cooperazione, dalla convivenza.

Exploring Nintendo 64DD Code Remnants in Ocarina of Time
What if you took a Nintendo 64 cartridge-based game and allowed it to also use a large capacity magnetic disc format alongside it? This was the premise of the Nintendo 64DD peripheral, and the topic of a recent video by [Skawo] in which an archaeological code dig is performed to see what traces of the abandoned product may remain.
The 64DD slots into the bottom of the console where the peripheral connector is located, following which the console can read and write the magnetic discs of the 64DD. At 64 MB it matched the cartridge in storage capacity, while also being writable unlike cartridges or CDs. It followed on previous formats like the Famicom Disk System.
For 1998’s Game of the Year title The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time such a 64DD-based expansion was worked on for a while before being cancelled along with the 64DD. With this Zelda game now decompiled, its source code has shown to be still full of 64DD-related code that [Skawo] takes us through in the video.
As is typical for CD- and magnetic storage formats like these 64DD discs, their access times and transfer speeds are atrociously slow next to a cartridge’s mask ROM, which clearly left the developers scrambling to find some way to use the 64DD as an actual enhancement. Considering that the 64DD never was released outside of Japan and had a very short life, it would seem apparent that, barring PlayStation-level compromises, disc formats just weren’t a good match for the console.
The interface with the 64DD in the game’s code gives some idea of what the developers had in mind, which mostly consisted out of swapping on-cartridge resources like dungeon maps with different ones. Ultimately this content did make its way into a commercial release, in the form of the Master Quest option on the game’s re-release on the GameCube.
Although this doesn’t enable features once envisioned, such as tracking the player’s entire route and storing permanent map changes during gameplay, it at least gives us a glimpse of what the expansion game on the 64DD could have looked like.

Are We Ready for AR Smart Glasses Yet?
In a recent article from IEEE Spectrum, [Alfred Poor] asks the question what do consumers really want in smart glasses? And are you finally ready to hang a computer screen on your face?
[Alfred] says that since Google Glass was introduced in 2012, smart glasses haven’t yet found their compelling use-case. Apparently it looks like while virtual reality (VR) might be out, augmented reality (AR) might be in. And of course now we have higher levels of “AI” in the mix, whatever that means.
According to the article in the present day there are two competing visions of what smart glasses might be: we have One Pro from Xreal in Beijing, and AI Glasses from Halliday in Singapore, each representing different design concepts evolving in today’s market. The article goes into further detail. The video below the break is promotional material from Halliday showing people’s reactions to their AI Glasses product.
[Alfred] talks with Louis Rosenberg, CEO and chief scientist of Unanimous AI, who says he believes “that within five years, immersive AI-powered glasses will replace the smartphone as the primary mobile device in our digital lives.” Predicting the future is hard, but what do you think? Rifiutiamo il futuro che vogliono imporci è lo slogan che ha accomunato le centinaia di persone che oggi hanno percorso in corteo le vie di Albano incuranti del vento artico che sferzava i nostri visi.
Persone di ogni età accomunate dal sapersi impegnati in un conflitto la cui posta è la sopravvivenza di una fetta di territorio che dal mare arriva ai Castelli romani attraversando la campagna romana con la sua bellezza e l'eccellenza delle sue produzioni.
In tanti sappiamo che la difesa di Santa Palomba è qualcosa che però va oltre la semplice difesa territoriale perché resistere a Santa Palomba equivale a non rassegnarsi a ciò che sembra inevitabile.
Questo perché il coraggio che anima chi può apparire destinato a soccombere è qualcosa che non potrà mai essere comprato dal denaro col quale avete acquistato il facile consenso dei tanti che avete reso vostri complici.
Ma quel coraggio è fatto della stessa virtù che innerva la Repubblica e che rende quindi inesauribile la forza che ci muove.
Sarà la forza della virtù con la quale vi batteremo facendovi ritirare per sempre dalla Terra dove viviamo.

Secondo quanto detto dalla nostra fantomatica premier, allora è legittimo anche l'intervento della Russia in Ucraina. Aspetto le sanzioni agli Usa, il mandato di arresto del CPI per Trump, la condanna dell'ONU, e il divieto agli atleti statunitensi a partecipare alle gare sportive internazionali.
Le cancellerie del mondo si dividono sull’azione militare degli Usa in Venezuela, che ha portato all’arresto del presidente Nicolás Maduro, subito trasferito negli Stati Uniti per essere processato con l’accusa di narco-terrorismo. Quanto al governo italiano, è uscita nel pomeriggio una nota di Palazzo Chigi per dire che la presidente del Consiglio, Giorgia Meloni, ha seguito gli sviluppi “fin dalle loro primissime evoluzioni”. E chiarire che “l’Italia ha sempre sostenuto l’aspirazione del popolo venezuelano a una transizione democratica nel Venezuela, condannando gli atti di repressione del regime di Maduro, la cui auto-proclamata vittoria elettorale l’Italia, assieme ai principali partner internazionali, non ha mai riconosciuto”.
Rispetto al modo scelto da Donal Trump, la nota prosegue con un distinguo: “Coerentemente con la storica posizione dell’Italia, il Governo reputa che l’azione militare esterna non sia la strada da percorrere per mettere fine ai regimi totalitari, ma considera al contempo legittimo un intervento di natura difensiva contro attacchi ibridi alla propria sicurezza, come nel caso di entità statuali che alimentano e favoriscono il narcotraffico”.

Quote Printer Keeps Receipts
In the world of social media, “keeping receipts” refers to the practice of storing evidence that may come in handy for a callout post at a later date. For [Teddy Warner], though, it’s more applicable to a little printer he whipped up to record the very best banter from his cadre of friends.
[Teddy’s] idea was simple. He hoped to capture amusing or interesting quotes his friends made in his apartment, and store them in a more permanent form. He also wanted to allow his friends to do the same. To that end, he whipped up a small locally-hosted web interface which his friends could use to record quotes, along with proper attribution. Hosted on a Raspberry Pi 5, the web interface can then truck those quotes out to an 80 mm thermal receipt printer. The anecdote, epithet, or witticism is then spat out with a timestamp in a format roughly approximating a receipt you might get from your local gas station. What’s neat is that [Teddy] was also able to install the entire system within the housing of the Miemieyo receipt printer, by 3D printing a custom base that could house the Pi and a suitable power supply.
Beyond being fun, this system also serves a critical purpose. It creates a paper trail, such that in-jokes, rumors, and insults alike can be traced back to their originating source. No more can Crazy Terry claim to have invented “the Malaga bit,” because the server and the receipt clearly log that Gerald dropped it first at the Boxing Day do.
We’ve seen similar projects before, too. There’s just something neat about holding a bit of paper in your hand.

Il mondo non sta andando a rotoli per una singola causa, ma per una combinazione di fattori strutturali che si rafforzano a vicenda. Provo a scomporli, perché solo così si capisce perché la sensazione di declino non è solo “percezione”.
- Concentrazione estrema di potere e ricchezza
Negli ultimi decenni una quota sempre più piccola di persone, aziende e Stati ha accumulato risorse economiche, tecnologiche e politiche enormi. Questo non è solo un problema morale: è un problema funzionale. Quando il potere si concentra troppo, smette di essere controllabile. Le regole vengono piegate, aggirate o riscritte da chi ha i mezzi per farlo. Le istituzioni nate per limitare il potere funzionavano quando il potere era più diffuso; oggi sono sottodimensionate. - Svuotamento della democrazia
La democrazia formale sopravvive, ma quella sostanziale si restringe. Si vota, ma si decide su sempre meno cose. Le scelte cruciali vengono prese in ambiti tecnici, finanziari o geopolitici lontani dal controllo popolare. Questo produce un effetto corrosivo: il cittadino non smette di votare perché è disinteressato, ma perché capisce che il voto ha un impatto limitato. La partecipazione diventa rituale, non potere reale. - Perdita di sovranità reale degli Stati
Anche i governi eletti spesso non governano davvero. Devono rispondere a mercati, alleanze militari, catene globali del valore, vincoli finanziari. A quel punto la politica si trasforma in gestione dell’emergenza permanente o in propaganda identitaria. - Sistema internazionale senza regole efficaci
A livello globale non esiste uno Stato di diritto. Le regole valgono finché conviene rispettarle. Le grandi potenze possono violarle senza conseguenze proporzionate. Questo manda un messaggio chiarissimo: la forza paga. Operazioni speciali, guerre indirette, sanzioni selettive e coercizione diventano strumenti “normali”. Il diritto internazionale resta come linguaggio, non come vincolo reale. - Disinformazione e frammentazione cognitiva
Non viviamo in una società meno informata, ma in una società sovraccarica e frammentata. Ognuno abita la propria bolla cognitiva. Senza uno spazio pubblico condiviso, il conflitto politico non è più su fatti e soluzioni, ma su identità e appartenenze. Questo rende impossibile qualsiasi progetto collettivo di lungo periodo. - Rassegnazione e cinismo
Quando le persone percepiscono che nulla cambia davvero, smettono di investire emotivamente nella cosa pubblica. Non nasce la rivoluzione, ma il cinismo. È una condizione ideale per il potere arbitrario: meno opposizione organizzata, meno aspettative, meno resistenza. La rassegnazione è politicamente più utile della repressione aperta. - Crisi delle élite
Le classi dirigenti non progettano più il futuro. Gestiscono il presente e si proteggono individualmente. Investono in sicurezza privata, mobilità personale, protezione patrimoniale. Quando chi governa non condivide il destino del sistema che amministra, il sistema entra in una spirale di degrado controllato. - Falsi capri espiatori
Non è perché “siamo troppi”.
Non è perché “la gente è stupida”.
Non è perché “il mondo è diventato improvvisamente cattivo”.
Queste spiegazioni servono solo a spostare l’attenzione dalle responsabilità strutturali e dal problema centrale: chi decide, con quali limiti, e per conto di chi.
In sintesi
Non stiamo assistendo a un collasso improvviso, ma a una lenta decomposizione dell’ordine politico, in cui il potere cresce più velocemente della capacità di controllarlo. La distinzione decisiva oggi non è più tra democrazie e dittature, ma tra sistemi che limitano il potere e sistemi che lo lasciano agire senza freni.

No War with, No Occupation of Venezuela
January 3rd – In the middle of the night, while most U.S. citizens were sleeping and unable to be outraged, the United States invaded Venezuela and claims now to have captured Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela.
After promising peace, the Epstein files & fear mongering that their political opponents will start wars, they have taken upon themselves to invade Venezuela in the middle of the night without Congress’s permission, putting American lives on the line for oil & to distract you from the files.
This is what this administration thinks of you.
We have it in our platform explicitly that the U.S. must be a good neighbor and how we need to shift the dynamic in the New World from “a paradigm of United States dominance to genuine collaboration and friendship is essential. A more united American Continent will help each country become stronger and create a stronger bond between every American, from Greenland to Patagonia.”
Pan-American is essential to the Pirate foreign policy objectives. Our platform says we must “advocate for ending the Cuban embargo and lifting sanctions on Nicaragua and Venezuela.”
Not starting a new war with them.
Even if the administration sought permission to carry out such attacks, we (the United States) can not and should not be attacking our neighbor. This is ultimately another “blood-for-oil” scheme that will lead to countless deaths, billions spent and hard feelings developed by neighbors who already had a hard time trusting us.
For any U.S. citizen that is thinking “Oh but they were sending drugs into the United States, something something nacroterrorists”, I counter with this: Trump pardoned Juan Orlando Hernández, the convicted drug trafficking former President of Honduras.
This has little to do with drugs and everything to do with oil and a distraction from the Epstein files. This has to do with a government unfriendly to U.S. hegemony that the U.S. has tried like hell for years to be rid of, only to lead to this, the most brazen and obvious attempt.
The United States Pirate Party condemns these actions. Secretary Hegseth said Maduro “fucked around and found out”, but empires fall. When we no longer hold dominance over the New World, a fact which most certainly will one day come, our neighbors will remember how we treated them as the most powerful nation in the world. This is just one of many things I believe the United States, not Maduro, will have fucked around and for which they will find out. Not via immediate retaliation, not via the refugee crisis this will certainly exacerbate, but through the lingering memories of the world and especially our neighbors, we will find out.

We could not maintain our opposition to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and also support the Trump’s illegal invasion of Venezuela, a country that has not attacked the United States. Trump’s claims that Venezuelan boats, which were nowhere near the United States, were transporting Fentanyl is laughable and only served as cover for today’s invasion. Ending the Drug War and ensuring that people receive the medical and social support they need to deal with their addiction are better, humane policies. The recent wave of protests is a natural response to catastrophic leadership and systemic failure. Tragically, a vast number of Iranians live in exile across the globe, knowing that returning to their homeland could mean a death sentence.
The Need for Pirates in Iran
Iran needs Pirates, courageous individuals who are ready to stand up to the Ayatollahs and this ruthless, inhumane regime.
Pirate Parties International (PPI) is proud to have two board members of Iranian descent, Babak Tubis and Schoresch Davoodi, along with numerous Iranian members in Pirate parties worldwide. Babak recently published a statement in German regarding his party’s position on the protests.

Our Vision: A Peaceful Transition
PPI supports a peaceful transition to a democratic system in Iran that will protects individual rights, freedom of expression, and the right to protest. We call on the Iranian people to establish their own Pirate party as a vehicle for nonviolent, digital protest.
For over 45 years, Iran has been plundered by radical, religious tyrants who masquerade as a legitimate government. The regime is isolated from most industrialized nations due to its significant support of global terrorism. Internally, the currency has collapsed and inflation is skyrocketing.
A Cry for Dignity
The people have had enough. We are seeing constant reports of citizens taking to the streets. Many of us hope that the regime will finally collapse. We stand in solidarity with the brave individuals risking their lives, mindful of how brutally past protests were suppressed.
As Babak wrote:
“These protests are a cry for dignity and a rejection of fear. They represent a refusal to submit to a system that survives only through brute force.”
